As a nurse I've cared for a few folks in this situation. Many of these patients have family who enable them . It's actually an eating disorder just like anorexia, just the opposite.

I don't think people understand this. Yes, I think it's mental and an addiction, but people with other addictions like heroin, cocaine, meth, or alcoholism or even anorexia are seen as sympathetic while overweight is seen as disgusting. Ask someone what ugly is and "fat" is usually the first word they say. Eating is the only addiction you need to survive. It's not easy like people think. Sexual abuse is one cause of weight gain. People who do lose weight often gain it back. Look at celebrities with every resource - money, trainers, equipment.. even they gain it back. I've had the problem myself and whenever I lose weight I gain back more than I lost. It's like the body is in control, not the mind. I was a vegetarian for 6 years and gained 10 lbs. I didn't have a car for 7 years, walked my dog about 4 hours a week year round, carried my groceries home and didn't lose anything, but when I started dating I lost 50 lbs in no time even though I didn't change my diet or exercise. My cardiologist told me there was nothing I could do. DNA. I'm not 600 lbs., but these people need to be treated like human beings with serious problems, not like scum. Nobody jokes about drug addicts or alcoholics who kill innocent people, but overweight people are the butt of jokes and insults. That's where we need to start to make a difference. You can't tell an alcoholic to just stop drinking (and nobody does) or an opioid addict to just stop even after they've been brought back to life on the street. Companies make billions of dollars with lousy weight loss garbage. If it were so easy it wouldn't be a problem.

@FourFish47 You're absolutely right that child sexual abuse can lead to over-eating and weight gain. Some describe it as stuffing the anger down in the frenetic eating.

I wonder how many people would manage to get over a drug addiction if they were told, "Yes, you need to stop using heroin but, in the meantime, you need to take just a little bit of heroin every day" or tell someone who is trying to stop smoking, "You must smoke ONE cigarette three times a day every day, but you must never smoke more than those three cigarettes per day." That's the dilemma people who try to lose weight face. They have to eat to survive so it is extremely difficult for them to take just a "little bit" of food and then stop. And you're right. No one tells a drug addict, "Why don't you just stop using drugs?" You are also correct that "fat and ugly" goes together sort of like "peas and carrots". I don't think I have ever heard anyone say someone was "thin and ugly" and yet obviously there are plenty of thin people who are ugly. I wish people would realize that addiction to food is just as real as an addiction to drugs or alcohol.

As an obese person (not to this extent, thank god) on the road to losing weight and getting back into exercising, it really comes down to willpower and having that healthy support network alongside you. Stress eating, eating disorder, trauma from your childhood, anything can cause you to turn to food as a crutch. It's painful, but I find this show motivating in the sense of: "You will end up just like this if you keep this up. Get on the right track." In....six months, I'm down 30 pounds, and I'll be hitting my goal weight once I lose 70 more pounds. To my other overweight folks out there trying to lose weight healthily- you got this! I believe in you!!!

Research I've done says a lot of overweight people have had sexual abuse issues. Many times it runs in the family. There's tons of weight loss programs, pills, surgery, etc., etc., but there's more money to be made in those programs than healthy people. This is exactly what I was talking about - people who don't have the problem don't understand it, but think it's a simple solution. These people shouldn't have enablers, but to think it's a simple problem is ridiculous. Do you think these people like living this way? Like the woman who couldn't fit in the car and started crying. There's nothing funny about it and they need to stop being treated like garbage. Even young kids who are overweight are suicidal. Ask me how I know.

Being this overweight it's very complicated yes there's a component of mental problems that usually stem from some kind of abuse when they were younger. It's very much like being an alcoholic you are trying to bury something that is very painful and if it takes a lot of fat to do that that's what you'll do. No one consciously sets out to get this large. It comes on gradually. Often they were large as a child and were taught bad eating habits and then again as I said they're trying to cover up some pain so the eating just becomes more and more and more to where they could eat ten times more than you can at one sitting. Very often they will have people in their lives that enable them to continue this Behavior and that person is often oblivious to what they are doing. Whether it's alcohol drugs or food when you start trying to take that away from people of course they're going to get petulant because you are taking away their crutch. Becoming obese or being anorexic they're both eating disorders and have to be treated by a professional.

I am not making excuses for them, but I am, if that makes sense. Let me explain. For anyone who has never had a weight problem, they have no idea what causes it or why they eat so much. I grew up super skinny most of my life. I weighed only 125lbs. when I graduated high school. At the age of 40, I weighed 165 and had a flat stomach and looked and felt good. I soon got divorced. I was sad and depressed a bit from that and food was comfort to me. So it’s not just the amount of food these people eat, it’s WHY they eat it. I now weigh 195lbs and am only 5’6” tall. I am not far all over. Still have thin legs hunting have a gut. I hate it, but I also hate living alone, and sometimes I eat comfort food to make me not feel so sad. Now, I have seen women in Chinese videos that can eat 3 times as much as me, and have almost no waist. I don’t know how they do it. Anyway, I know some of why these people eat so much but I could never eat that much. These days I can order a large pizza and it will last me 2 full days of meals. I do not eat that much. I just do not get the movement I need to work it off. I am almost 61 and have not had work for 4 years now, so all I do it sit. I hate it, but I have lost 10 lbs in the past 2 years and for me not changing anything other than skipping a meal now and then because now I fee full most of the time, I am losing some slowly. I am not anywhere near those folks shape, but I am bigger than I wished I was. Just stating that I know what the cause is and instead of making these folks mad by a mean Dr. maybe they should seek counseling first. Get their mind right, then that weight will come off easier.

The cost of all this comes from taxpayers money. The majority of these people are on disability. which makes them eligible to receive checks from the state. I feel like all these people have some form of mental illness, they should start with counseling, and some form of program where they get sent off to a facility that they can be cared for. One of the things that holds them back is of course their own attitude, as well the enablers in their lives.

I feel bad for the people that have that lymp disease. It's when you see someone with a huge limb but the rest may be normal. I don't know the name of this disease.
I can't imagine the smell of these people. There is no way they can smell ok. How their skin doesn't split and rot is what I think about. I'm not a small lady, but nowhere like these people. When I got hurt and my whole life changed I did overeat. This year alone I have lost 30lbs and I'm not really doing anything. I just can't eat. I'm still big and the doctor has told me that I have to eat at least 1000 calories because my body is in starvation mode which is just weird to me because I'm still fat. I had a bad reaction to an antibiotic and it kinda cooked the lining of my intestines. I hurt when I eat and I hurt when I don't eat. I think I could live a month on just one plate of food these people eat.

Kabir, sweetie, I wonder if you've done reactions to Hoarders. I think the mental issue is very similiar to this. It's also (at first sight) disgusting and you can make instant observations about being lazy, etc., but we're learning there's much more to it. I think you'd be surprised, (disgusted) and maybe inspired to see humans in a different way. Either way I think it's psychologically fascinating. I hope you do too.

The show and all shows like it are an absolute Trainwreck. And I'm not too fond of the Network's either. I believe almost everybody that sues them.. I think the producers manipulate the situations.. I think heavy editing is involved to get more drama going. Some of those patients and contestants are not mentally and psychologically and emotionally ready for that the manipulation and threats and that might be part of the reason that they quit and/or sue. I think these weight loss shows take people who are vulnerable and at their worst and make it fodder for entertainment. They may be grown people but I don't think they have the capacity to understand the Fallout of these kinds of shows.. but maybe that's just me

I can’t watch this show. It really grosses me out. I can’t understand lack of concern for their addiction to food. I eat to live not live to just eat. My addiction was vodka so don’t hate on me. I assure you, if you saw me drunk you would have been grossed out watching me as well. I never would have gone on a tv show to get sober. Lol.

I am sorry I cannot watch this one Kabir. I have a son who has battled with his weight for a VERY long time. He suffers from deep bouts of depression and turns to food for his comfort zone. We have paid for his weight loss surgery and yet he continues to use food. If you don't have someone close to your heart who has this condition, it is easy for you to say the should just stop eating. Stopping is not that easy! It is no easier to stop eating than an alcoholic to stop drinking, or a coke head to stop doing coke. It breaks my heart everyday I live knowing he will likely die before I do.....and he has two very beautiful girls who depend on him. I just refuse to watch this show on TV as I DO NOT FIND IT ENTERTAINING IN THE LEAST!!!

I just don't want people judging others for their weight assuming they are all just slobs that sit and eat fried chicken all day. There is so much more going on with many of them, it just breaks my heart. There is literally nothing we can do to change him or his situation and that gives me unbearable grief every single day.

I feel bad for these people but it's entirely their fault. It's no different than a drug addiction. It's sad but they know what they have to do to fix it, they just don't. Today's society babys these people and allows them to lie and make excuses to themselves to not hurt their fee fees, because being "nice" is more important to people than human life.

okay, but weight loss is hard and any weight loss should be praised, not put down. That amount of weight loss in anyone would have triggered a doctor to check if someone was sick, because healthy weight loss is 1-2 lbs per week. Her weight loss was in that range. It is a form of fatphobia to expect obese people to eat bad diets to lose more weight than what is recommended as healthy. It is one of the major reasons that most people just gain the weight back and more, because instead of making lifelong changes, they are put on fad 1200 calorie diets for a tv show of to feed some doctors ego. You cannot get the needed nutrients for your body on 1200 calories.
