It is literally making me cry to listen to this after so long. I played this tape to death. I would listen to it and draw the Millennium Falcon, lightsabers, Ewoks, etc....And still, after all these years, I knew every little sound effect and bit of narration before it came. I searched it out after showing Return of the Jedi to my daughters last night for the first time, to huge success. THANK YOU for bringing back this little yet huge piece of my childhood!!! My heart’s full!
I am having a visceral reaction to this. I haven't heard it since I was a child. I particularly remember listening to it when I would go to sleep at night on my little cassette player. My god. I'm literally experiencing physical sensations in my body. Thank you!!
I had this on a small record as a kid! I remember listening to this SO MANY times! This is a true delight to hear again! I also realized that the voice cast from these read-along recordings were also used in the "Mission to Ord Mantell" story! I recognize C-3PO's voice actor perfectly!
Man, I had this when I was a kid. We didn't have a VCR until probably '88 or '89. This is one of the few ways you could relive the movie. "Heroes, together to the end..." well...crap. If only my younger self knew what the Mouse was going to do with these beloved characters in the future!
"but some ships smashed into the invisible shield". I KNEW IT! this has haunted my memory for so long because i listened to this so many times as a kid. Thank you for putting this on youtube.
I remember that from the book specifically because the movie didn't show that. 4 year old me was like, "Wow, some people didn't turn away in time and actually died."
This is the story of Star Wars, Return of the Jedi. You can read along with me in your book. You will know it is time to turn the page when you hear R2D2 beep, like this...
I can't thank you enough for uploading this, and so professionally put together, too! I had this book and tape as a child, and I listened to it dozens of times! I always thought the voiceovers were really accurate too!
Thank you for posting this. I listened to this religiously as a child. I haven't heard it in almost 30 years but I still remember it like it was yesterday. Brought a tear to my eye.
Oh wow, so many memories of listening to this end over end over end on my fisher price tape recorder while driving to the beach for eight hours… gotta forward this to my poor suffering parents who had to listen along with me! (And on our next road trip, force my kids to watch this repeatedly instead of streaming Netflix!) I saw ROTJ once in the theatres (I was six!) and then this was my only Star Wars content until we got a VCR in ‘87
They also held us over for the 2 and a half years til this came out on VHS. That seems insane now when movies are on vod in no more than 3 months. Theatrical runs were much longer after which there was a period of limbo where they just went away for a while,I don’t miss that shit😆
Thanks for posting this. As a kid I had the Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back read along but never got to hear the Return of the Jedi. No loss as this version doesn't even mention Leia being Luke's sister.
It's been a long time since I've listened to this, and I never caught it as a kid, but they definitely used voice actors from GI Joe here. I am certain that Arthur Burghardt is voicing Vader, Lee Jeffrey is voicing Lando, and B.J. Ward is voicing Leia, as I can clearly hear the voices of Destro, Stalker, & Scarlett in their performances.
How interesting they completely omitted Leia and Luke being brother and sister. I guess with only so much time even something that important can be left out of an adaptation.
I have this. A whole box set with a bunch of other 80's storybook adaptations. Return Of The Jedi is on the cover. Though, some books/tapes have been lost over the years.
I had the star wars and empire strikes back versions My dad brought what he thought was the return of the Jedi one BUT he'd brought the o.s.t instead either way I was happy my friend had this and we listened to it at least once a week thanks for uploading man
Holy moley!! Just found this channel whilst looking for something else. I had this (among other read-alongs) when I was a child. Thank you. You have another subscriber.
TPTB will never allow movies of this calibre to ever be made again. The film is spiritual. Good triumphing over pure evil. No Star Wars films ahould have been made after this. The movies were just way too popular to sit on the shelf so they gave you Star Wars Lite in 1999.
I had this as a kid and for YEARS was convinced that the movie version on VHS I had was wrong and that there was another version where some ships smashed into the shield around the Death Star like it says in this book!!!
I love this movie for the year of this film was 1983 the same year that Mickey's christmas Carol came out along with other stuff. Most of the film was set in California. For the cast of Star Wars, the redwoods are the biggest trees in the world.
Hey, Lando stole Akbar's famous line! lol....Thanks you so much for uploading this. The memories I have as kid with these storybooks.... Hearing them again almost makes me cry lol.
I like how the voice actor that portrays Han Solo sounds like Harrison Ford he also i believe voiced Indiana Jones for Temple of doom and Last crusade, also the actress who voices Liea I think also voiced Marion Ravenwood in the Raiders of the lost ark book and record
For any Dr. Octagon fans, you're looking for 6:52. This is the original sample from Dr. Octagon's self-titled song: ua-cam.com/video/VOtpDEOssT4/v-deo.html
I had this, in Swedish. Obviously the Swedish voiced were different but I never thought the orig. US voices would be different as well. What a let-down 😅😋

Do you have access to the bigger, longer ROTJ storybook that came out that had more scenes and the real vocal tracks? I remember how excited I was when the opening Vader scene was included and I heard James Earl Jones. We would play out the audio with our action figures.
you should of left in all the audio cassette sequences that were on the original cassette, to keep authenticity. I used to have this cassette, when i was a lot younger, and there were audio sequences on the original cassette before the story, at the end of part 1, beginning of part 2, and right at the end of part 2, shame.
hmmmm, I used to have this cassette tape & book, when i was little in the 80s, I now have the original 1980s RAINBOW return of the jedi cassette tape bought off ebay, the one i originally had & lost, included with the same 24 page book. the cassette I have includes extra audio sequences at the times i described. Your version, must have not included them. wondering if your was the Rainbow cassette tape in the 80s. looking at it now, 1983 is the year it says on mine (looking at it through the magnifying glass).
After some research I found that Rainbow produced the Star Wars books and cassettes for the UK. This may be why yours has the additional audio than from the U.S. versions. I’m interested to know what these sound like I may have to get them. Thanks for the info.
@@starwarsradio340 I had the vinyl version in the UK and I'm pretty certain it had excerpts from the film on it. I didn't have a VHS player until 1990, but I knew word-for-word certain parts of the film long before then e.g. the 'you may dispense with the pleasantries Commander' bit.

That's so funny because that was the ONE line I remembered too!
I remember that from the book specifically because the movie didn't show that. 4 year old me was like, "Wow, some people didn't turn away in time and actually died."
ha, yes, that's the one line I remember and think about every so often 30 years later still
ditto!!! I felt they missed a great opportunity in the re-release in the 90s not adding that in.

Star Wars Radio You've done an outstanding job! I'm excited to hear what Attack of the Clones and Sith sound like.
I remember all 3 of these from childhood, such a beautiful time

I have got to get these (the original SW trilogy) on mp3.

Same here! And I instantly thought of Planet of the Hoojibs 😂
“Little did they know..” is something I always hear in my head every time I watch the movie ...thishas stayed in my head for 36 years!
Little would the listener know of the full story if this read along was the only version they got to experience! No mention of Leia's secret sibling.

I loved this book as a kid! These sound effects are so familiar and take me back. So nostalgic :-)
I listened to this SO many times as a kid, especially the part where Luke beats Vader and confronts the Emperor.
I can't find my copy but I loved these cassettes!

"Kill him Luke!" in a book for kids. Man I miss the 80s lol
The movie was rated for kids
Exactly, check out the ones for Gremlins. They seemed so normal as a kid but I went back today and they seem a bit intense for kids,I loved it though😉
lol good catch, that wouldn't fly in a book for kids today. It would be rated PG-13 and come with a trigger warning on the front.
Long before we went woke.

The guys voice is from Keeping it real from the Chappelle show.

2:01 magical sounds
The only dowside is, it doesn't reveal Leia and Luke twin siblings.
Guess in this one the actor playing Lando was just told to shout everything he said.
Luke Skywalker:. I am a Jedi, like my father before me.
I know I've failed in life when I can do most of these voices better than the chosen actors, but never got into voice acting.
