Video Info:
The power trio of Ginger Baker on drums, Jack Bruce on bass and Eric Clapton on guitar really hit home with audiences in the west, particularly in the US when they first started to release music. And eventually they popularized a mix of blues, rock and psychedelic music in Europe too with songs like White Room, I Feel Free and the song i thought i’d focus on in today’s video, Sunshine Of Your Love. A song that perfectly bridged the gap between rock, pop and blues, enhanced Clapton’s reputation as a master of the guitar and semented their title and reputation of being a successful supergroup. In this video we’ll look at the band’s early history, the song’s composition and the legacy it’s left behind.

What band or artist should be next? 🤘😎 Comment here.
Soundgarden or Alice in chains c: also, glad to see you back
Idk, I'm here to learn more about music. I don't think i have anything to offer.
souxsie and the banshees please.
Maybe Stevie Ray Vaughan?
Velvet Underground
Cream is so slept on dude, Jack Bruce definitely is my favorite vocalist of the 60s
Oooooh you mean 60’s my guy?
@@chrisattigliato1- Shit you’re right, editing that.
I love cream, I am from india, I’m 16 and I had never listened English songs but in 2020, I heard my first rock song which was white room. And I liked it, then I started listening more and more and my ear evolved through blues , rock to metal. It all happened in 2020. Sunshine of your love inspired me to play guitar, and I bought my first electric guitar, ( from the money I earned from selling my paintings )
Great Man,Im From India Too
Pratik Poshe nice man
Great! Good luck with the guitar!
I've been inspired to play the bass from Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath themselves are inspired by Cream.
So Cream is pretty influencial and huge!
I'm a little jealous! I discovered all that great 60s and 70s Rock almost 30 years ago. Enjoy the journey!
Sandip Biswas really? I love black sabbath too, I a mean I started with blues but later I liked metal too. I love tony iommi and ozzy Osborn.
Cream’s White Room was the first song i ever downloaded on the internet, back in 1997-8 when i was 13 my dad told me to search for Cream.
Still a fan to this day of course.
That's my favorite drumming track of theirs. Ginger is amazing on that song. I literally can't listen to it without playing the air drums... and I'm a guitar player.
Plot Twist: Your father actually wanted you to go get some cream at the store xD
You got a good dad my friend.
The Bass is such a important part of this song, weird it wasn’t talked about much at all
It is actually a Bass Riff
It was Jack Bruce that came up with the riff in response to Jimi Hendrix. Then it was Ginger Baker that slowed down the tempo.
Yes well that's what happens when a guitarist tells you about Cream. They all seem to think it was Eric's band when in fact Jack wrote and sang the majority of the material and Ginger put the band together. Anyone who thinks Jack's and Gingers careers began and ended with Cream have a lot to learn.
What other bass player ever would take this approach to a simple blues tune?
ua-cam.com/video/RpeXHFhUH-c/v-deo.html
Cream and Jack Bruce set up the power trio mold. In that mold the bass player has to be more melodic than just part of the rhythm section. There were a lot of melodic bass players around then, Jack Cassidy for instance who pushes his bass to the forefront on Airplanes stuff. But Bruce set the stage for amazing folks like John Paul Jones with Zep (who really are a power trio with a singer). So it's a little frustrating that Bruce gets pushed aside in this.
Cream struggled with Sunshine of Your Love. When it came time to record an audio engineer named Tom suggested that Ginger Baker play the drums with an American Indian beat. Made the song a success.
@dscarty
Scrolled thru hoping someone would point out the roll Tom Dowd played in the recording of Sunshine Of Your Love. Hands down the most influential engineer/producer over the span of his career. Thank you for educating these youngsters. I'm 68 grew up listening to everything Tom had a hand in.
@@alankillian4962 He was amazing.
Fascinating!
omg hey! its been a while :)
wow, i just wanna say that your production quality has stepped up quite a lot wow
Thanks :) I'm glad you noticed.
hells yeah man! you sound more confident, the audio quality is better, the editing is improved too! i love being able to see progress and you’re definitely gettin’ better & better :))
You’re videos are so unique. I love your visual design, depth of research, and background music. You’re truly doing something right and well 🙂
DU DU DU DÙ - DU DU DU DÙDUUUDÙ one of the many ost in my head when i'm high
Happy new year !
You're back! And with one of my favorite band!
Glad to be a part of this man! It turned out as a killer video. Looking forward to see you slayin it in 2021!
Fine guitar work my man, glad you're back, and loving the format!
loved the approach of this video! so happy to see you back :)
Loved how you chose to do this video, great production with this one man, proud of you!
Good to have you back mate, video was brilliant 😊
Nice timing! I've recently started obsessing over Disraeli Gears and Sunshine of Your Love all over again and out of nowhere this video pops up haha!
Heey you are alive! glad to have you back
Great stuff, thanks. Love the Cream!😁👍
glad to see youre back :) great video, enjoying this change in format and slightly more theoretical style! hope youre doing ok !!
The riff of Sunshine of your Love was created by Jack Bruce on the bass. Clapton learned it and performed it on the guitar.
Are you suggesting that Jack Bruce was Clapton's bitch? Hmm, interesting. I guess you have a point there.
Nice to see you back man.
Take care and keep on!
So happy to see a new video! I missed your uploads
That’s very kind of you. There’s more coming soon, so stay tuned.
Great to see you back!
Blue moon, you kept me standing alone 🎶 🎵!!
This was way more informative than I expected! Thanks for your work, passion and time! Maybe some black keys stuff in the future?
Another great video
Do more videos like this ! Very well done
bruce wrote Sunshine. The modulation on the second 4 bars of the solo is well known is an "error" due to the light being low in the studio... anyway it sounded so good that has been kept
I'm glad that you chose to talk about this song. It's been stuck in my head thanks to it appearing in Cobra Kai season 3
Would be cool to hear you talk about MGMT :) nice that u back!!
10:15 He meant 32 beats/8 bars and 16 beats/4 bars.
thank you for explaining sunshine of your love 😍👍🏼
No problem :)
Good to have you back
EXCELLENT !!!
Thanks :) I'm glad you liked it.
Like ya cut g, and I bet this is gonna be a good one
Great video dude. Was wondering where you had gotten to
And claptons tone that tone I've been chasing whole life
Great video great song, just btw it would be 32 beats rather than bars at 10:17, bar refers to a measure which would be 4 beats in this time signature, just a nitpicky thing I noticed
Loves theses videos and love the amount of research and dedication you take to fully commit. Just wanted to ask if you have heard the band “10Years”? Would really to hear your opinion on them or a video about that band
One of the greatest power trios of all time!
Welcome back, man!
you're finally back man! it's been a hot minute
Hey Lie, hope you're happy and healthy, longtime fan came back to this video for the 1000th time now. I wanted to ask you for some time now, where did your original Understanding Cream video disappear, I've searched everywhere? I really enjoyed that one as Cream is my favourite band of all time. Stay safe man.
Hey I sure am. And thanks for returning. I'm still uploading videos on the regular. Perhaps it doesn't pop up in your feed too often. That Cream video disappeared because of copyright issues. The people that own the music I played in the video decided to taske it down unfortunately. Doing cover songs seems to be the safer path moving forward to avoid this. Cheers.
@@LieLikesMusic I see. Thank you for letting me know. Cheers to you to.
One of the first songs I ever learnt on bass here
Hey lie, hope you're doing well. Just yesterday I was watching you're Mars Volta vídeo again and was wondering what have you been up to. Sometime ago on the comment section on one of the the mars volta music video here on youtube you told me you were focusing on some kind of side project? Did it work? I'm glad you made another video for this channel, and it's even better cause it is about this epic band, thank you so much!
Hey Rafael. I'm good. And you? I'm working on a side project still yes. Probably a different one than before. I'll tell you more about it soon here on the channel. The Mars Volta are awesome. Hope they release something new soon. Take care
I'm good as well, and definitely in need of some new MV material XD I'll be waiting to know about the new project! Hope everything goes super with it.
The legend returns
Welcome back!
yes he’s back. back again. 🤘
you have a dead pixel on the face area on the camera you used to record you playing! This video format is nice, keep it going.
Totally get you already have (at least?) 2 vids on them, but please do more Pixies vids. I really think not many other bands have such an outsized impact on the music we hear. Totally under rated.
Yay ur back
That emotionless guitar in the first cover was wretched.
It's back!!!!
The return of the king
Can't remember if it was Felix Pappalardi or Tom Dowd who told Clapton while recording the song "why are you playing Blue Moon as the solo?" To which Clapton replied that anything can be turned into a solo... Fully aware that he was quoting that particular melody!!
This is a really good video but the Blue Moon connection really should have been discussed in it. It’s one of the most noteworthy and historic things about this song.
The king is back
Jimi Hendrix also used the same group of notes (in a different key) in the main riff of Machine Gun
That image of ginger over the mushrooms is sooooo cool
It shows how good that Baker and Bruce were together. They hated each others guts personally but still played with each other in several bands in the 60s and weirdly in one in the early 90s with Gary Moore on guitar. It sounds like Cream but in the Grunge/post grunge era so it's easy to see why it's an afterthought and didn't sell. But look up Around the Next Dream by BBM.
I am sure Clapton loved BB King, along with a plethora of other blues guitarists. However, I think his vibrato was more influenced by Freddie King, wider rather than stinging. You´ll hear it in the "Beano" album more clearly. Also, "Strange Brew" is an homage to Albert King, riff-wise.
Yeah I always thought Clapton's bluesbreaker playing was way more influenced by Freddie King and Otis Rush
He’s back
Dude you’re back!
I sure am 🤘😊
The king has returned
It's great to see you back, Lie! You should do an episode on Soundgarden or Alice in Chains, or hey, why not both?
Thanks. It’s good to be back. I’ll see what i can do. Never been a huge fan of them but i’m open to new stuff. Any albums you’d recommend by them?
@@LieLikesMusic For Soundgarden, you can't beat Badmotorfinger and Superunknown. Alice In Chains, I'd recommend Dirt and Rainier Fog.
@@LieLikesMusic If neither hook you, you could check out Candlemass' first album and talk about that? I'd love to see a video on that too.
@@LieLikesMusic for Soundgarden, either Badmotorfinger ( which is banger after banger after banger ) or Superunknown ( their most popular ). For AiC, Dirt undoubtedly
@@LieLikesMusic dirt is a good album by Alice in Chains. They're a fantastic band even outside of the grunge label. Their harmonies are amazing
We missed you!
love the black and white collage transitions! are they your own work?
the way he pronounced surrey really bugged me as a brit lmao
Yeh i’m far from a brit lol
Makes it sound even posher le surré lmao
@@LieLikesMusic lmao its all good rkid
Yeeeah new vid❤
By the way, great cover🤘🏻👌🏻
A good video for some auxiliary info and theory analysis, thanks.
A little odd that you've neglected two of the tune's primary raisons d'etre, though:
1) up to that point, nobody had heard such a simple, LOCKED backbeat+unison riff quite THAT heavy in a pop song. i.e. Ringo was not _mad_ like Ginger was.
2) it is _designed_ to be smoked a joint to, so that the aforementioned simplicity seems _gigantic_.
HES BACK
YOOOOO HE’S BACK
OMG HES BACK
Finally!!
HE LIVES
LIE IS BACK
Nice. :)
1:01 I live in Surrey and had to listen again on how your pronounced Sur-ree. It's okay I'll forgive it. :)
i like how Clapton and Bruce traded verses on vocals,
I always thought the first few notes of Clapton's solo in this song were a nod to the song "Blue Moon" done by Andy Williams. Likewise, the first few notes of Hendrix's solo on "Wild Thing" from Monterrey were from "Strangers In The Night" (also done by Andy Williams). Coincidence? I don't think so.
He's back when the world needed him the most
I’m glad you see it like that 🤘
Lies not bad playing at all man!
I can’t get over how he said Surrey on the voice over! Surrey should rhyme with flurry.
One of my favorite songs. Romantic lyrics infused with an abundance of testosterone.
The solo opening phrase sounds a bit like "Strangers in the Night" (which was released in 1966 by Frank Sinatra).
its actually Blue Moon and its a note for note replication. Very cool!
I would like a video on Alice In Chains, also, welcome back!
The FOOL,thats what i say,SG baby!
Understanding Misfits
please
1:00 Sir Rey?
Surrey. Like “Sa ree”
I loved this episode but where is the Gentle Giant epsiode? The band seems to be going through a resurgence in popularity lately with new merch, videos, and documentaries
Lets goo
does anyone have tips on how to solo over this?
Surrey is pronounced “suh-ree”. Just FYI
Isnt the riff a bass riff?? Made by Bruce. Not to forget the lyrics done by Pete brown a friend of theres who also wrote White room. Like my fav band Black Sabbath i was shocked to learn Ozzy didnt write the lyrics, the bassist did Geezer.
I’d love you to dedicate a video to the late great Peter Green/ Danny Kirwan
I normally love your videos and input. But I feel like this whole video almost fully dismisses the abilities of Jack Bruce who is one of the best bassists of all time! This also coming from a guitar player haha.
one of the hottest songs of all time
I don't know but... have your tried to plug your guitar? lol
I think you've got a dead pixel on your camera. Right on the side of your nose at 6:07 is where I noticed.
Those guitar strings of yours really bother me
