I wouldnt say kids have it good today. If someone asked me if i wanted to be a kid in the beginning 80's or early 90's OR in the year 2000 and on. I would want to be a kid all over again the 80s early 90s era.
I remember waking up Saturday mornings when I was a little kid to watch this cartoon and being so excited! I couldn't afford comic books but at least I had this
Still the greatest and most comic accurate version of the X-Men ever put on screen. I pray that when the MCU does it's x-men films it looks to this for inspiration as an entire generation was introduced to this TRUE version of the X-Men.
It took 16 years to get Appocalypse on screen. Are you out of your fucking mind dipshit? MCU got Thanos on screen in 4 YEARS!!! People have lived and died in the god damn time it's taken for the XMEN to finally get comic accurate so shut the fuck up.
Idk how I stumbled across your channel, but I have spent the past 3 days binge watching every cartoon from my childhoods history, and i would like to personally thank you for it.
My son (11) and I have been watching this over the past several weeks. It's a really solid show. No other show except Batman: TAS really delved into as many mature themes, so it was a ballsy show which, honestly, probably couldn't be made today without offending PC censors. It's a definite two thumbs up from us! Last year, I saw what my kid was watching on Disney XD and was mortified at the poor quality, so I resolved to introduce him to GOOD animation. We've watched the entire DCAU, X-Men, Spider-Man (nineties), Space Ghost, Jonny Quest and several others. Now my son can't understand why they can't make cartoons anymore. I tell him I don't know.
if you watch the video on this channel about the "history of saturday morning cartoons" it actually explains why todays animation sucks.. but basically it comes down to, companies won't make as much money off the advertising during the shows so they don't spend as much on the show.
What i loved most about this series was that it played like a greatest hits. In adaping the comics it trimmed all of the fat so much so it impaired my ability to read the massively convoluted cluterfuck of the comics. It kept the mystique of Wolverine, cable, Gambit and Apocalypse without over explaning thier backgrounds. No need fot Madelyn prior. ;-)
Pryde of the X-Men. A cartoon so impactful that it's spawned one of the greatest arcade games in history. And then, X-Men the animated series brings us a joining of two massive franchises that no one could ever expect in video game history
Imagine being Wolverine knowing the love of your life, Jean Grey, was getting railed by Cyclops in the very next room. No wonder he was always miserable.
The reason X-Men #1 sold so much was it had five different covers and one of those was a deluxe edition. This was also at the height of the comic book speculator market
Wow another classic that brings me back to my childhood. My father, brother and I would watch it on saturdays on fox religiously and was hooked on it. I ever wonder if they ever would release it on dvd? Especially with all the videos on past cartoons you did over the years , if they made those dvds I think I would go broke lol. Great video and you always find away to bring great memories from tv.
That was a damn good video bub...as a Canadian boy, I appreciate the corporate explanation of my childhood dreams being shattered over money with these mini-documentaries.
I. Th. I agree with the 1st part all xmen movies were good with exception of last stand, apocalypse, & origins however saying those other movies were trash I don't agree with iron 2 being the exception the others were good 2 great but it's all opinions just like some ppl loved man of steel & bm vs sm imo they were mediocre altho man of steel is better still not in my faves I preferred dark knight trilogy over dceu movies with exception of wonder woman
I loved that series. I was a full grown adult, with a crush on Gambit. One of my favorite scenes from that series, is Storm, Rogue and Jean Grey out for a day shopping at the mall. Just s girls' day out. Another favorite of mine, Wolverine. Always calling Gambit, "Gumbo". And his catch phrase, "I smell 'em!".
Seeing Pryde of the X-Men in September 1989 started my love of the franchise. Like you, Dan, 9-year-old me came back each Saturday hoping to not only taped it, but to get more episodes and was sadly disappointed each time. I eventually got the Pryde... VHS at Toys R Us in the early 90s and watched it religiously until the X-Men series launched in 92/93.
That is so crazy! As a kid, I had that pilot episode on VHS. I never knew it was a pilot episode but I always wondered why I could never ever get anymore episodes. That episode is single reason I fell in love with the X-men!
While you mentioned Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, you didn’t mention the two episodes in that cartoon that featured the X-Men that were to be a launchpad for Pryde of the X-Men or a separate possible X-Men cartoon that never materialized.
I remember having Fox on for the debut of the first episode...and something else aired. No explanation was given and back then no explanation could ever be found! Then it finally!!! came on seemingly forever later, and I was expecting the Pryde of the X-Men theme to start because I thought it was going to be a continuation of that. Nope! I was way wrong. Definitely a good thing, though. I loved the animation but Australian Wolverine? No thanks! I loved this show so much. They really nailed the 90's X-Men. Excellent episode, Dan and Greg!
I remember those frustrating days too. The TV "Generation X" movie got me pumped, the premiere happened then ... radio silence for months. It got to the point where I started to question my own sanity and if I'd just imagined it or not - if it hadn't been for my friends also asking, "What happened to the X-Men cartoon?!" at school I'd probably have written it off as a dream.
Good video boys! X-men TaS was probably the most excited I'd ever been for a cartoon show. Back in the days of fresh episodes I would ban in-coming calls lock the door, and if you wanted to hang out you had to sit quietly and not ask stupid questions. Sure i was a bit of a spaz back then, but i just loved those X-men!
Just wanted to say that yes, while X-Men sold the most comics of a single issue, that just glosses over a whole lot of other reasons why it did. Being popular helped, but it was also released in the middle of the comic speculation bubble, being branded as Issue #1, and having 4(!) Variant covers. All this means that while it sold a lot, that was more because individual collectors were buying the issue in bulk in the hopes they could resale them for profit later (They didn't.)
Great episode. This show came at just the right time for me - X-Men was a community obsession with my pals, collecting the comics and playing the Marvel RPG in the garage as we tried to figure out life after High School. The animation is rough, but the stories and passion from the creators is evident - Similar to the ExoSquad show.
God damn, South Korean animations studios are like the Wizard of Oz of the animation world. You find them everywhere in the last 30 years if you actually look behind the curtain haha
I can count on one hand the number of videos I've hit 'like' for, before actually viewing. This is now one of 'em. And now the X-Men theme is stuck in my head. Gonna see if there are any good remixes.
I would say X-Men this was the my gateway into the X-Men comic books. Other than Hugh Jackman‘s performance as the live-action wolverine wolverine from this animated series is my go to in a ration I always hear this guys voice as wolverine.
I was right there with you man. I still have that VHS tape from the one weekend I was lucky enough to catch the rebroadcast with a cassette in the VCR. It starts with an episode of Ninja Turtles that gladly sacrificed itself for that X-Men goodness.
I was always more of a DC kid than Marvel but I loved this show. And my best friend who was big into X-men comics used to get so mad at me when I would act like I knew anything about X-men because all I knew was what was in this show. Made for a lot of great middle school nerdy arguments. Good times!
I rewatched this series about a year ago and you can definitely notice the shotty animation. I still love this cartoon though I used to love watching it on FOX KIDS on Saturday mornings
Someone ought to make a compilation video of the most immortal tv intro themes without vocals. X-Men, X-Files, Simpsons... I feel like when I'm old and can't remember my own name I'll still be able to conjure up these tunes.
It's funny, that Pride of the X-Men pilot aired so rarely that for a long time I thought scenes from it were from my dreams, and I mixed parts of that episode in with parts from the [almost equally rare] episodes of Spiderman and His Amazing Friends that guest starred the X-Men. It's crazy to think how it was only a couple years between when that pilot aired and when the 90's cartoon premiered; back then it seemed like a lifetime
It was an honor growing up to these and alot of the cartoons of the 90s my older brother did put me on to some of the cartoons he watched 80s that deserve mentioning such as transformers he-man and thundercats
Someday I hope to write a book about how awesome "geek culture" was in the 80s and 90s. It was absolutely surreal. The Marvel Trading card series in 1990 was my first introduction to all of this, and it changed my life forever.
Would you consider covering the Silver Surfer cartoon? It was short-lived sadly, but excellent! I thought it was true to his character, and an amazing homage to Jack Kirby!
This show is still one of my all-time favourites. I am still absolutely flabbergasted that I get to live in a world in which Disney is making a continuation of this series. I am so badly looking forward to seeing the new X-Men 97 show.
This was a very well done adaptation of my favorite comic book line. I was very surprised at how good it was due how so many properties usually softened by the second season, like TMNT. It did become obvious in later seasons that the quality had declined.
I still can't believe how far we've come in the comic universe. Because for the longest time there were only the animated shows to represent our favorite comics. Now the live action films have taken over. I can remember watching X-Men TAS and wishing it would be made into a live action movie. Now several of them exist. Some not so great as others. But it's better than what we had back in the 80's and 90s.
I remember when this came on I think I was in 2nd grade and it’s always been hard for me to wake up early on any day and this cartoon only came on Saturdays. I loved this series and I remember only a couple episodes aired and then it was reruns for years. It was sort of like the Rugrats cartoon which we only got one season of and we had to wait years for a new episode. I remember when the X-Men changed its art style and I tuned out.
This and Batman were amazing for me during that time. Between Batman and X-Men, the only toy property I was into at that time that didn't have a cartoon was Alien vs Predator (almost happened!). And yes, the song is in my head for one reason or another at least once a month.
Growing up in the early 2000s, I had a bunch of X-Men: The Animated Series videos and was so confused every time I popped in "Pryde of the X-Men" and Wolverine suddenly had a brown suit and an Australian accent.
If it wasn't for this show, I wouldn't have read comics. This was the gateway that started it all for me. I will always feel lucky that I grew up with this.
Okay, so it's been two years since you asked that end question, and my brain has been working non stop to create a perfect mashup of all three theme songs. So far, it's meshed the instrumentals of Power Rangers with X-Men and is working on setting the Mario Bros. lyrics to the hybrid melody. I've asked my brain to stop many times and it just replies, "lol, nope."
I'm a bit surprised you didnt mention the main reason the Xmen 1st season cartoon was so successful..the cards..the collectors Xmen cards...along with POGS those cards were the reason to even go to school to see what cards you could trade w your friends..and kept you watching the cartoon..I remember the infinity gauntlet card was highly sought after..that and Psychlock..although I think the latter was more of a demand due to art design and young hormonal boy issues lol
This Uncanny Xmen is my all time favorite, better than the other Xmen series, the soundtrack even gives me goosebumps, giggles, excitement when it’s already starting. The air time was on Fridays, 7pm to 7:30 pm then Batman the animated series follows. 😎
X-men was my favorite cartoon series of the 1990's it was awesome along with spiderman, iron man, and the fantastic four. The 1990's was a time to be a fan of marvel comics.
I can't put into words how hard I fell into the X-men animated series pit back when it aired. I had it bad. I actually took part in a debate my 2nd grade teacher proposed of "Who would win: X-men or Power Rangers?" (X-men, obviously.) Pryde of the x-men is a phenomenal episode (We'll ignore Wolverine's terrible Australian accent.) I was lucky enough to find it on VHS at some point in the 90s. Still no idea where I got it, but it is a treasured artifact. Now...if I only had a VCR.
I hoped to hear how merchandising effected the show at the time. I remember a 2012 Comic Vine article's mention of Marvel trying to convince the IRS that the X-Men were non-human characters; this way, they could pay less taxes on toys manufactured in other countries. Instead this sparked an online debate on whether mutants should be considered human and thus, enjoy human rights.
The main thing I remember about the blizzard of 93 was that the power went out in the middle of a new episode and that was literally the only time I had control of the TV. Saturday from 11-11:30. Just to watch X-MEN. After that it was literally whatever my lil sister and mom wanted. I was grown when I finally binged all the episodes miss. I even got to stay up late to watch the wepon Xand dark Phoenix specials that came on late night specials with spider man 2099.
that X-Men pilot was worked into the EXCELLENT arcade cabinet game. I sunk a lot - A LOT - of money into that machine as a kid! I was always annoyed that Wolverine didn't have his healing factor in it...
Still the only accurate representation of the powerhouse that is ROGUE! She single handedly started me off on my love affair with all things marvel so they need to do her right when Disney reboots ;)
This and Batman The Animated Series were two of my most favorite comic cartoons.
Don't forget the spider Man animated series in the 90s
TMNT 1987, too.
Back to back
That's because they are the two best ever made.

Comic-accurate? Iceman was in like one episode!
The animated version of The Dark Phoenix Saga got me reading the classic storyline in trade paperback form. It was altered, but not bad.
I stop watching " Save by the Bell " on NBC on Saturdays to watch the Phoenix Saga.
I thought the trade paperback was much better, but the animated series version wasn't bad at all.

Chris Claremont and Jim Lee's X-Men #1 sold almost 8 million copies.
And I was one of those 8 million. I still have my copy
True, but early '90s comic sales were speculation - driven; the multiple covers accounted for a lot of those sales!
@Swamp Fox I know this. I was just pointing out WHY it sold such a huge amount of copies.
Fox's kid programing game was sooo strong in the 90s. Batman TAS, X-Men, Spider-man, MMPR wow.
What i loved most about this series was that it played like a greatest hits. Real X-Men don’t love. They Rage. Against the Machine! 😂

It looks like smooth sailing from here.
AAAHHHHHH COWARDS!
X-cellent video. Truly uncanny track record with astonishingly good writing. First class stuff.
[Not sure if talking about X-Men or Toy Galaxy]
Toy Galaxy I think my comments wouldn't x-clude either in regards to quality.
Good times!
I'll never understand being so protective about access to a brand.
I used to have Pryde of the X-Men on VHS (bought). Loved it, Kitty has been my fave Marvel character since the early 80s
Dude I WISH I was in the 80's and 90's. They had such good stuff then I would even go as far as to say that its better than some stuff now.
yup i grew as kid in late 80s and early 90s and cartoons in that era were great!
That's awesome bro=)
Someday I hope to write a book about how awesome "geek culture" was in the 80s and 90s. It was absolutely surreal. The Marvel Trading card series in 1990 was my first introduction to all of this, and it changed my life forever.
That's an awesome idea dude! I think that'll make a spectacular book=)
Very true. Don’t care for the style of cartoon these days. Looks too childish hard to take it seriously
The X-men theme will always be one of my favorite theme songs ever. That song just kicked A$$
Would you consider covering the Silver Surfer cartoon?
It was short-lived sadly, but excellent! I thought it was true to his character, and an amazing homage to Jack Kirby!
This show is still one of my all-time favourites. I am still absolutely flabbergasted that I get to live in a world in which Disney is making a continuation of this series. I am so badly looking forward to seeing the new X-Men 97 show.
My new favorite channel, hits me right in the sweet spot 😄
That's the spot we were aiming for!
Batman the animated series got me into superheroes. X-Men the animated series got me into comics.
Thank you so much for mentioning Firestar. Soo under-rated.🔥🌟
Its still a great show! With Xmen, Batman, and Spiderman...We 90's knew we had a treat! Heck, the voices returned in Capcoms fighting game series!
On it! This was my entry into the stories as I didn't get comics as a kid....
Dan Larsen thank you so much for your videos they me a lot to me and others that watch them thank you so much
This and Batman were amazing for me during that time. Between Batman and X-Men, the only toy property I was into at that time that didn't have a cartoon was Alien vs Predator (almost happened!). And yes, the song is in my head for one reason or another at least once a month.
This came out when I was in the Army and it started me collecting comic books again.
Proof that cartoons can lead kids to reading.
DID NOT MISS Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends! Watched every Saturday. 👍
Batman on the weekdays and X-Men on Saturday, good times.
The best time in the Saturday morning cartoon era. RIP Best childhood ever
It's that ::Bonggggg:: sound in the Xmen them that's so iconic.
Xmen 1992 was amazingly detailed in both story and graphics, but my gosh could it get dark sometimes xD
Currently rewatching it on d+
That 1st Cartoon WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME !!
I think X-Men #1 sold over 8 million copies.
Jeremiah Massengale correct.
It was 8.4 million, yeah
I even got to stay up late to watch the wepon Xand dark Phoenix specials that came on late night specials with spider man 2099.
this was my favorite cartoon series as a kid
Best intro music to any cartoon liked this cartoon alot
that X-Men pilot was worked into the EXCELLENT arcade cabinet game.
