Please reconsider. Every man must have at least one or ideally two business suits (basic charcoal Grey & navy blue, more to less formal respectively) and same level dress shoes. You’d rather have and not need it rather than need it and not have it.
I have 2 I wear one once a year usually, sometimes more depending on the ammount of weddings. But a dark suit is always good to have in case of a funeral. I have a few sport coats and get more use out of those on holidays and if I’m taking someone out someplace nice.
”Are those the best shoes money can buy? Heck no!” I have never tried on a pair of Ace Marks but I know you are a man of your word and I trust you with your sponsors. I think you did a great job on implementing the sponsor in to the video aswell beacuse other stylebloggers usually have 2-3 minutes to talk about the sponsor and then crack on with the video. I feel all advertisements and sponsorships should be as honest as Raphael.....first time he is paid to advertise but his review is completely the truth! 👍🏻 keep it up sir.
Hi, First of all - a huge THANKS for all the content you've created over the last years. I'm so inspired by you and thanks to all your valuable advise I have refined my way of dressing a lot for the last couple of years. I also love that you've hired Preston who can show us young gentlemen that it's fully possible to dress well even in the beginning of one's career when one has a somewhat limited budget. The above is one of my favorite videos that you've posted and has been a huge help in my search for the perfect shoe collection. Now that I've purchased "the big five" (and a few more pairs) it would be very interesting to hear your opinion on the following five pairs to buy. Cheers! /Henrik
Gentleman's Gazette I'm a fan of the western boot but have yet to see the UA-cam style gurus embrace them yet. Would be interesting to see you guys do a video on those lol.
1:30-1:53 I love how even when reviewing a product, you keep your opinions authentic. 2:16 - 2:23 Archer would disagree. I have three pairs of Ace Marks from both of their campaigns and like them all although I thrift most of my shoes and even scored a pair of AE that way for a mere $7.
Hey Raph, I liked your video before I even watched it based on your title. You never fail to educate and make videos that are relevant. I really concure with your choices, keep up your good work.
I now have two pair of Ace Marks and love them both! I have the double monks that you showed and a pair of ox blood oxfords. They are great shoes! I did have to order a half size larger than what I wear in Allen Edmonds, but I love the fit! Thanks for validating my opinion. Love your products and videos!
I personally recomend four types of shoes : two pairs of Oxford cap toe, one Black and another burgundy, second a good pair of shiny Black derby shoes is more casual to use with chino pants and denims, third a Black or burgundy penny loafers and finally for winter a good pair of Black chelsea Boots.
This is my list if you are starting from nothing. 1: Black cap toe oxfords 2: Brown cap toe oxfords 3: Dark brown suede cap toe oxfords 4: Black cap toe oxfords (One is not enough imo because you need the other one to rest inbetween uses) 5: Paten leather opera pumps or whole cut oxfords if you are boring. 2 & 3 is great for cashual clothing aswell as suits. Broguing is optional aswell. If you dress cashualy i would go for a derbie as the fourth shoe. I love oxfords if you can't tell :D
Wow, thanks! I'm just now upping my dress shoes game. I have three of the five with the loafer coming next then a double monk strap. I've set my eye on different colors like you suggested and am definitely headed in the right direction. Thanks again!
I would love to see you cover black shoes with a contrasting white. They are personally my favorite color scheme for a shoe. Most commonly seen in golf shoes. However, it really suits and even dresses up a black shoe, and breaks up the black that you seem more often than not not to like. White shoes, as well. Most people do not know how to incorporate them. However, they have an unparalleled level of dignity when implemented properly. A shoe history video would be rather intuitive and important for your dedicated fan base to learn of that may not otherwise pursue. My first experience was with the history of the Chelsea boot. However, most shoe and boot models have a very rich and beautiful history that anybody gains a greater appreciation for having educated themselves on.
I would suggest a larger 10/12 shoe collection built up over time. I have Church black Oxfords, JM Weston burgundy wholecuts (French, a more elongated, elegant line), John Lobb chestnut double monks, John Lobb black penny loafers, Crockett and Jones dark brown penny loafers, Crockett and Jones tan loafers, Corthay medium brown patinated derbys (French very beautiful), Foster and son light/medium brown bespoke brogues (my absolute favourites, stunning, incredibly comfortable, very expensive), Crockett and Jones light brown brogues, Crocket and Jones tan Chelsea boots, JM Weston dark brown suede derbys, I have belts that match all of them, some formal like the black and burgundy, most of the tans and browns less formal. I prefer French to Italian for my flashier, more elegant shoes but that’s a matter of personal taste, as you can see most of my shoes are classic English makes/styles. My Church Oxfords are over 30 years old and immaculate, my Lobbs and the Chelsea boots are over 20, rotation and good shoe care practices means that good shoes last a lifetime, I’ve probably spent less on my collection than people who buy trainers and cheap shoes every year.
Thanks, Raphael. I've only recently entered the sartorial world. From your videos (which I've been watching on repeat for some episodes), I'm gaining lots of valuable tips. As a result of this video, I've so far purchased 3/5 of the recommended shoes. I still need a black Oxford to replace my black Derby, as well as a cap toe half-brogue which is not very easy to find within my budget. But I'll get them eventually. Thanks for helping me out 🙂
Believe it or not, I have three or four pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes that I purchased in the 90's...cap toe oxford, two pairs of slip-ons (black, burgundy), and another oxford two-tone style. Always stowed with a shoe tree and in the cloth wraps that came with the shoes. The shoes are still in immaculate condition. I have a narrow foot, and I'm able to get A-E in a B width. They were expensive at the time $200+ or thereabouts, but the quality was well worth it.
depends on the age and what you do, as a university student, even a pair of derbies makes me the most "formal" one of my peers, therefore at the moment I'd say my 5 must have shoes are: a pair of black derbies and a pair of light brown ones (I go without broguing as personal preference) which can be used all year were I live, a pair of Chelsea dark brown boots for the cooler days of winter and autumn, a pair of light brown penny loafers for summer, and for the most informal occasions in summer a pair of boat shoes. That said the 5 above can then be expanded with maybe another pair of chealsea in black, a pair of black Oxfords, a pair of desert boots, maybe a pair of brogued dress boots
my current 5: 1. captoed oxfords, black (ferragamo) 2. plain toed chukka boots, black (florsheim) 3. boat shoes, blue and white (sperry) 4. running shoes, black (under armour) 5. trail shoes, tan (merrell)
Raphael... what can I say you continually comfort me when Im down.. keep it up. p.s. I have WAY to may black shoes and I thought it was the way to go but can only pair with so much. I only realized this tonight. Thanks brother. Love this channel! p.p.s. dude, your videos are as timeless are the men's style you live, and teach. Keep it up!
-Black plain toe oxford/wholecut -burgundy double monkstrap -oxblood captoe Blucher/balmoral -dark brown penny loafer -all your favourite shoes *Note: grey suit is boring but you rocking it
First part of my collection after ditching cheaper dress shoes was a pair of captoe black Oxfords from Barker, very nicely made, goodyear welted, and with a bit of work I put a mirror shine on the toes. I recently went to the Crockett & Jones factory in Northampton with no set agenda of what shoe I was looking for but came away with a lovely pair of brown half-brogue captoe Oxfords, I would have been just as happy with Derbys but these fitted so well I just had to get them. Next on my personal list to buy is some Loafers.
I've worn Brooks Brothers tassled loafers for work, lace up cap toes from Bostonians back when they had decent quality for the money, graduated up to Aldens, and Allen Edmunds cap toed lace ups. On casual Fridays, I either wear more formal cowboy boots without much decorative stitching with Dockers and sport coat or Bass Weejuns beef roll penny loafers and yes I had a penny in them. Now that I'm retired, it's sandals and slip on. If it's snowing, then it's waterproofed hiking boots. Belt? I usually have braces so no belt necessary. If I do wear a belt, simple leather dress belt. Now it's a nylon webbing belt with a climbers style buckle. Goes with jeans, shorts, all year round. Or a thick nylon webbing with a 1/4 inch ratcheting buckle as a gun belt.
I would say an essential for me in addition to the shoes in this video would be a smart black derby or gibson shoe with a rubber sole, or double leather if you're a traditionalist. This is a workhorse shoe for when you have to be formal, but the weather is bad or you have to walk all day or if you walk to work. Can be a city rubber sole but dainite is very hard wearing. I suggest a derby because dainite soles don't look right on oxfords
@@mikew742 Yeah I agree. I thought I liked them but when I tried some on at a store in NYC, and saw them on other people walking around, I realized they look better on a rack than on my feet. I could maybe still go for a pair of single monks, but double monks look absurd.
This guy is on point with his assessment shoe styles and categories. I have three out the five mentioned, a cap toe that wouldn't be considered a brogue but there Kenneth Cole's; conversely, he failed to mention the split toe another multifunctional style, I acclimated to after a number of years. Finally, I had an issue with his pants; and not sure if he was trying to draw attention to the shoes or, is it a proclivity: any haberdasher of stock and trade, should have a decent brake in his pants.
Was about time YOU also made a five-must-shoes videos! Have been waiting for this. As always, well done, Sir. A note of prudent forethought: Transcend (descend) into infomercialism with caution. We (I think) love your videos precisely for the absence of such. Edit extra: I understand sponsors approach you because of your credibility, but by taking on sponsors that is exactly what you lose. (Mentioning FB is transparent and different; we know it's yours.)
We only work with companies if we truly believe in them. We have turned down many brands such as Paul Evans, Harry's or Gillette because we simply dislike their products. We are very transparent about the relationship so everyone can draw their own conclusion or simply decide not to watch it. It is a free video with a lot of helpful content in my opinion, but we do not force anybody to watch it. If you do not like sponsored videos, you can check it before you watch and then decide not to. We think that is very fair.
Gentleman's Gazette Raphael, I know that you are serious and honest. I believe that those of us who gravitate towards you do it because of the high quality of your videos, your insight, and because of the feeling that there is no agenda. I understand you have to make a living and that it takes time to create content. In comment sections and on forums I have noted that many viewers have lost faith in the Big Three (you know well the channels). All I wanted to observe is that there is a fine line and it is my hope you don't cross it, because you are the most sophisticated and dedicated of them all -- old and new.
Gentleman's Gazette - I want you to succeed with this passion of yours. Yes, stay selective, people trust your advice. 6,000+ views in one day, kudos! Love your outfits! Young men have a huge interest in learning what you teach.
Couldn't have said it better sir. I unsubscribed from TMF because his content while some is good, it was getting annoying with him pushing these bullshit brands, especially shitty watches and what not. I really do enjoy this channel however. He has to make money which is fair but I"d like him to stay true to the classic menswear game. AlphaM actually has some decent stuff when it's not talking about his skin care company.
my way to decide what basic shoes you need. write down (or draw if you're artistically inclined) eight shoes that you would buy if they where the only shoes you could ever wear. you can repair or replace them infinite times, but always the exact same shoe. then look for something that fits within your budget. edit: this works with other clothing and accessories too, obviously
I bought a pair of Black Medallions from Ace Marks and I love them! I'm amazed at how surprisingly comfortable they are! I'm still waiting on a pair of shoe trees though.
Nice collection! I purchased a pair of Ace Marks once, beautiful shoes, but I had to return them because they were too snug. I don't think they cater to wide foot men just yet.
I have purchased an Allen Edmand driving shoe and penny loafer. LOVE the style and feel. Wish I saw this beforehand but am still satisfied with the shoes. Love your advice and got an automatic sub from me! Great info.
OMG navy double-breasted pin striped suit with pink tie Also Derby wing tips in brown and thanks for pronouncing Derby correctly! OMG whimsical stripey socks with the loafers.
I purchased those loafers in my standard 11.5 D size. Tighttttt. Removed the padded section in the heel which was a much better fit.Maybe should have sized up to a 12. My fault for not doing their sizing guide/info :)
Such an excellent video! Sincerely appreciate it. I got a Walnut and a dark brown cap toe derby from Allen Edmonds, do you think a walnuts good? I love the color, not sure how stylish they can be, correct me if I'm wrong
Hi GG, I’m curious what you recommend if one could only afford two pairs of dress shoes. Given one was a black oxford, what might be a good second choice? I’m soon to be 27, athletic, will get married in May, and I’ll likely be wearing these with blue/navy Italian suits or grey trouser/navy jacket combinations. For the second pair, my style choices would be between a double monk and a brogue of some kind. Color wise, I’d like medium brown, dark brown, or burgundy. I’ve found the Allen Edmonds Park Ave black Oxford a bit conservative but I know the quality is high. How would you compare AE to Ace Marks given my needs. Love the channel. Thanks so much.
Love your Channel man you really help me up my wardrobe game. So I noticed that you had on a dark colored suit with your brown shoes. I've seen that look before and wondered if it was an acceptable look and I guess it is. Never really thought about wearing brown shoes I only wear black. Definitely going to do the brown in the future. Tnx
The 'black oxford' is not exactly an oxford, cause it's a one cut, the good spelling for the pair is : Richelieu or One Cut. When you want to know if the "bottier" (shoes maker) make a good work, always check the One cut on store. I suggest a dark brown instead of black. Best regards from France Gentlemen
Might as well get the cap toe Oxford. In the unlikely event that I'm ever attending a white tie event, I'm probably going to do well enough to buy a new pair of shoes.
I'd opt for a captoe instead of a full cut simply because the creases are more controlled. A fullcut can crease all over the shoe but a captoe 99% creases on the cap stich.
I live in the UK and getting Ace Mark shoes will be a pain because they ship from the US. Would you recommend Barker shoes in England? I can get them more readily and they seem like good quality and value.
A nice selection of shoes, well done. The models you presented are very nice and well polished. At one time or another, I've had all those models with the exception of the monk strap. Next time I go shopping, I may try one (or two) on to see how they look. Thank you.
I only really have money for two pairs of dress shoes. I think one will be a black Oxford (for weddings, funerals, etc), and I’ll need one more. What would you suggest as a good second? I’d likely wear it with mid blue/navy blue suits and with blazer/chino outfits. I’m having a hard time deciding on style and also on color (brown vs. burgundy) for a second pair. I would love to hear any thoughts you may have!
Instead of a brown shoe, try a burgundy red / mahogany one. They are far more versatile and can be worn with a darker suit, when a brown shoe would be out of place.
1. Black Oxford (whole cut)
2. Brown Derby wingtip brogues
3. Penny Loafer (Medium brown)
4. Double Monk Strap (Brown antique brown)
5. Half Brogue Oxford (medium brown)
Noted & thank you Sir!
Sharpe shoes
Thanks
As an old woman now I always found it pleasing to the eye to see men dressed to the nines and of course the shoes was important too my husband always looked nice when he got dressed up it’s rare to see anymore. You always get the look of admiration
I don't have Dress Shoes. To be honest I'm not even owning a suit. I wouldn't be in a situation to wear one. But I still watch and enjoy your videos:)
We all say that until we in court😭
Honestly suits are really helpful even if you don’t wear one for work. They’re required for a lot of events and even some venues/restaurants
Ya. This was a really cool video - one of the best so far for this channel
Please reconsider. Every man must have at least one or ideally two business suits (basic charcoal Grey & navy blue, more to less formal respectively) and same level dress shoes. You’d rather have and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

yes showcasing the truth while highlighting what their strengths are (Ace Marks).
I feel all advertisements and sponsorships should be as honest as Raphael.....first time he is paid to advertise but his review is completely the truth! 👍🏻 keep it up sir.
I would have put in Chelsea boots as well.
They are formal and very comfortable, a great pick for winter.
Those are boots, the video is talking about shoes.
For a versatile and stylish but casual look, I like the classic oxblood penny or tassel loafer. The oxblood color works well with most wardrobes.

You forgot the black western boot with classic heel, no stitching for that clean look. A must for a formal look at every narco gathering or party.
lol
Gentleman's Gazette I'm a fan of the western boot but have yet to see the UA-cam style gurus embrace them yet. Would be interesting to see you guys do a video on those lol.
That would be an interesting look, with a sports jacket and maybe dark jeans or khakis, depending on the jacket color
I always appreciate a man who knows his shoes.
Hey Raph,
I liked your video before I even watched it based on your title. You never fail to educate and make videos that are relevant. I really concure with your choices, keep up your good work.

I had my doubts about ace marks but hearing you back the product makes me more confident to buy them.
What????
If the above comment was actually sarcastic, it would’ve been brilliant :)
Did you end up buying them and if so how have they held up?
Everybody has been collaborating with AceMarks lately! Must be good shoes! Love your channel, you are a big inspiration.
That’s how I feel too John! If GG is collaborating with AceMarks they must be great value!!!!
Agreed! Huge inspiration!
Wow, thanks! I'm just now upping my dress shoes game. I have three of the five with the loafer coming next then a double monk strap. I've set my eye on different colors like you suggested and am definitely headed in the right direction. Thanks again!
Gray slacks/navy blazer is almost a go anywhere outfit. Highly recommended.

What!!!?
I love loafers. When you have snazzy socks they really show them off.
Thanks my friend. You helped tremendously in knowing which shoes 👞 go with what clothes and when. Well done.
You are welcome. Always happy to help! :)
Just purchased 2 pairs: Allen Edmond, walnut wingtips/tips w brogue and blk Darby w/cover tips. Cause of you mr
Just bought a pair of ace marks and im in love with them
I don't know why, but I love how he says "shoe."
Great work, Raphael...simply fantastic! Such a great resource and keep up the amazing fashion analysis.
Wow I don't know why I'm here 😂 but this is a great combination
Black Derby brogues is the exact thing I got years ago when I knew nothing about shoes.
How are they in fashion? What do you think of them now?
I just bought two pairs of dress shoes. I wear them so often at work.
Hello , just purchased a pair of black wholecut from AceMarks thanks for sharing your expirience.
Very classy clothing and shoes .Timeless fashions .
Judging from your high standards, to collaborate with Ace Marks they must be really fine. I'm pretty much convinced now.
Monkstrap shoes are beautiful!
No they aren’t, trust me on this one

Love the monkstrap. Takes a little attitude to pull off. Crockett and Jones on the 337 or even the 348 last is, for me, perfection.
We know
Personally not for against them but that's the beauty of variety. Will suit some people depending on individual taste.
I am a woman and love this channel
A very nice selection of shoe styles. I think a chukka or Chelsea would be the next pick after those staples.

All I wanted to observe is that there is a fine line and it is my hope you don't cross it, because you are the most sophisticated and dedicated of them all -- old and new.
mikal_ would you please remind me of the Big Three? So we can watch out. Thanks.
So much effort, yet so satisfying
I love double monkstrap in oxblood. A colour that may be too casual or loud. I just can't get over the colour
1' the casual or dressy penny loafer , 2' the versitle chucka boot , 3' the basic black capezios , 4' espessdrills ,
I like a square toed Snake skin or red or blue velvet or two tone ivory ...really also in square toed ,they are comfortable.
that tie is perfect with that suit. I am going to buy one!
my way to decide what basic shoes you need. write down (or draw if you're artistically inclined) eight shoes that you would buy if they where the only shoes you could ever wear. you can repair or replace them infinite times, but always the exact same shoe. then look for something that fits within your budget. edit: this works with other clothing and accessories too, obviously
I bought a pair of Black Medallions from Ace Marks and I love them! I'm amazed at how surprisingly comfortable they are! I'm still waiting on a pair of shoe trees though.
I prefer Tassels over Pennies, but both are fantastic options
Nice collection! I purchased a pair of Ace Marks once, beautiful shoes, but I had to return them because they were too snug. I don't think they cater to wide foot men just yet.
+Luke Cage Actually, they are just adding a wider e Last to their lineup. So that may work better for you. In the past they just had an d width
G00D Morning from Auckland, New Zealand it’s Monday, December 30, 2019.
I have purchased an Allen Edmand driving shoe and penny loafer. LOVE the style and feel. Wish I saw this beforehand but am still satisfied with the shoes. Love your advice and got an automatic sub from me! Great info.
Your video is the best! I just bought my first pair of EDmonds black tassel loafers +patent leathers shoes, very happy with purchase in nyc---
I have to check out edmond penny loafers
Well presented, good selection of shoes.
Goodyear welts and Blake stitch are the best constructions.
OMG navy double-breasted pin striped suit with pink tie Also Derby wing tips in brown and thanks for pronouncing Derby correctly! OMG whimsical stripey socks with the loafers.
If I can start again, I would go for black oxford, medium brown cap toe with broguing, and oxblood double straps.
Loafers are a Must, always.
Personally, I would drop the Monkstraps. Better choices
I purchased those loafers in my standard 11.5 D size. Tighttttt. Removed the padded section in the heel which was a much better fit.Maybe should have sized up to a 12. My fault for not doing their sizing guide/info :)
I love Oxford, monkstrap, derby , mocasin.
Such an excellent video! Sincerely appreciate it. I got a Walnut and a dark brown cap toe derby from Allen Edmonds, do you think a walnuts good? I love the color, not sure how stylish they can be, correct me if I'm wrong
Thank you Raphael!
Very informative!
Fantastic video, great overview!
Thanks for the vid. I wanted to start using more formal shoes and did not know where to start
Many thanks for your well researched advice, your posts are very informative
Look up parques shoes on Kickstarter. They cost very little for unique and quality shoes in your choice of design. Highly recommend.
I'm a single female and I can't stop watching these videos....
Great video this helped a lot. Sideways have stuck to black shoes so branching out to brown now.
Agree, except double buckle shoes. You don’t mention but one pair of loafers.
Hi GG,
I’m curious what you recommend if one could only afford two pairs of dress shoes.
Rockport dress shoes made by Adidas are very comfortable and are a great value for the money...
So far you have not mentioned classic open toed sling back Crock with preferred soles & hood ornament over tassel, over kilt 😂
I would always go for black oxfords with toe cap over wholecut. I mean, how many white tie events do people go to?
I’m watching this wearing my Black Derby Longwing Cordovan Wingtips 😂
As you can imagine I wear a lot of black blouson/leather jackets
