- "How do we become a society of effective listeners?" In this talk, Amelia Spalter shares her experience with interviewing and the importance of listening. Amelia Spalter is an undergraduate concentrator in Religious Studies. She is the founder and Editor in Chief of Brown University Interviews. A brief selection of her previous interviews include media personality Norman Lear, attorney Alan Dershowitz, singer/songwriter Seal, and Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors. Before enrolling at Brown University, her formal education was stewarded primarily by television. As such, she now plans to pay it forward by pursuing a career in television writing. Spalter is also Director of the Interviews Board for the Brown Political Review. When not interviewing, she serves as the founding President of the Brown University Screenwriting Collective, the Ivy League’s largest pre-professional screenwriting organization. Her other publications include sports reporting for the Brown Daily Herald and an occasional letter of demand or manifesto. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I believe communication is one of the most under-utilised skills of all time. And as I’ve identified listening is where we fall down most. Clarification is the second. Checking that you are hearing what the person is actually trying to convey. Fantastic talk. Thanks
"You've been participating in interviews every day of your life"

Great talk! Thanks for the listen.
Stumbled upon this speech and couldn't have been more surprised. Such good information here to take with me into my everyday life.
Thanks heaps for this, Amelia! Very helpful information 🙂 Theresa
super video. you are so right. Anyway, I get that you are talking about phase cancelation. There are 2 states of an interview, asking and responding. For a dynamic discussion the rate of these state phases must be well balanced, that s how you get that ping pong effect, where the virtue of listening gives an enhanced quality effect to the discussion
Listening
Dope talk!
Where are these interviews you talk about, with the rapper and the veteran?
I’m not entirely sure how I ended up here at 2:30am but I’m glad I did😂! I thoroughly enjoyed myself 😂
Thank you Amelia
Well said 👌👌👍
Good job!
Great video
Love
Her voice is giving completely different vibes to her body language.
Good stuff
nice share😊
3 cameras and 1 bad microphone. The production quality is so bad it’s good.
4:50 to skip introduction
We spend so much time talking past each other :(
Wtf 90% of the comments here are bots, could someone be trying to promote this video possibly 🤔
Unfortunately bots can't quite listen yet. But they're working on a software patch for that. 😁
@@NathanRohr I think they just flood the video with random comments so it goes up in priority within the youtube algorithm. I know you were making a joke though :grimacing:
👍👍❤️❤️
Do we really live in divisive times though? Or are there simply various elitist interests that want to divide us.
Biological bickering, I hope no worse
Eat them
There's a lot more variables than just these. One could say there's many intersecting forms of Alienation that is incentivized by the social and economic system we use.
Actually, it's a human tendency, it's called "unconscious bias", everytime everyone's brain is trying to categorize and classify things. It's up to ourselfs recognise that we are biased and always keep trying to get rid of those biases
Resist, defy, do not comply

Do affirmations work? Well, you can think about your goal a million times a day, but if you don’t mix your words with feeling, you’ll never experience the desired result.
That’s because all emotionless thoughts remain in your conscious mind. And the Subconscious Mind is A emotionally mInd and it’s control everything and sis is Right we need to listen! Very powerful 🙌🏾❤️❤️

A conversation isn't an interview, but I understand where you went with this. Maybe a poor word choice.
Many people, and I mean many, lack the basic concepts to communicate properly, whether it be empathy, relation, whatever.
From how I've grown up, I've learned having a larger wide array of knowledge best works for conversation, not necessarily for debate.
You begin to learn how to bridge concepts, and find conversations within.
But...I, might be misunderstanding your direction of this ted talk. From my view you seem to want to keep conversations formal, rather than informal.
👍🏽 🖖 ✌🏻
No... I won't be here Friday Homes... Look Homes... I got TSHIRTS to sign...
“Worlds greatest thinkers” lmao

Dare... Do understand ...most of the watchers have no any single Idea a bout what you had side ... surely...any why keep telling what's going on

good speech, bad acting, I know it's difficult to act natural in front of a camera not an audiance but it would have been better if she acted more natural and talked to us without too much acting, I couldn't focus on the speech lol!
Just text me Your Needs List... Client #79.... and I will make my decision....
I don't understand what you are saying, but I can bet you are a genius, though not genuine
She gets pissed if I ask for clarification
C span is Chinese propaganda straight of the global time.
I call bullshund on the interview with the rapper... I cant imagine a 5hr conversation so ridiculous as that. I smell a fabrication
Seriously?
Dear person, who reads it. Yes, I mean exactly you! Maybe we don't know each other. Still, I want to say, that I believe in you! You will certainly achieve your dreams and your happiness! Just don't give up and be honest with yourself!
Now you have at least one person who constantly believes in you, which means you are fated to realize your dreams! No doubts here ^)
*Best wishes for you ❤️ from a new UA-camr* ✌️

Who are you?! Click on the box if you're not a robot! Lol.
My problem is as soon as I hear anyone believes in a god, I no longer respect their rational decision making.
That is a problem. No one believes for no reason, it's as hard as walking off a cliff and hoping to get caught. So real believers have conversion moments. Start interviewing on that premise after learning to respect everyone - and to lower your own ego.
@@AlexiasShado I don’t respect anything that has caused the slaughter of billions of humans
@@Flozman1982 lol Billions, huh? Billions only came into existence within the last couple centuries. Religion has never had any part in war. If you actually cracked a book you'd learn even the Crusades were about protecting pilgrims or protecting land rights, depending on whose side you ask.
@@AlexiasShadoI can already tell you're not very well read by the fact you use the most classic example of a Holy war to argue against the notion. "The Crusades were a series of religious wars between Christians and Muslims started primarily to secure control of holy sites considered sacred by both group." If you wanted to impress me, we could debated Northen Ireland or the ongoing civil war in the Central African Republic or maybe even the Bosnian war, at least there's a little more grey area than Knights summond by the Pope riding into battle with Crosses on their chest.
@@Flozman1982 *sigh* ... Tryhards. Pathetic.
