Homage, fake, trending or expensive, you buy a watch for yourself. 97 % of the people around you don't care about what you wear on your wrist. Unless you interact with watchmakers every day. If you spend your time watching these UA-camrs a little frustration may set in for you If your budget doesn't allow you to buy a Rolex. Don't buy these, buy these! I would say, buy what you want.

On the other hand, an hommage watch lets you test if the more expensive equivalent is the watch that is right for you. I thought I wanted an Aqua Terra but after having bought and worn an hommage AT for a few months, I just got bored of the style. The mistake would've been to splurge many thousand dollars on an Aqua Terra first. I don't regret not having bought an Aqua Terra and have moved on since. I'm just not interested in it anymore.

I did the same, with different results. I bought a homage to the Rolex Sub. After liking the size and weight, I then got the real thing. However, your story and mine, are not what she is talking about. For me anyway, I could have always gotten the real thing. I just used an inexpensive alternative to make sure I wanted it before I got it. It was not a thing I ever thought I would continue to wear if I liked it. She is talking about people who are thinking “If I get this, I won’t want the real one”, and that usually never happens.

Love my $65 (amazon) Invicta pro diver automatic 8976ob. OK, I'm waiting for the watch snobs to chime in with all kinds of negative responses. I've heard them chime in with all their negative glory on other sites. Homage, yes, fake, no. Lots of branding all over it, dial, case, bracelet, no chance of mistaking it for what it is. Best price possible for a Seiko NH35A movement. Watches costing up to $500 use this movement. Yes, I know the more expensive ones are regulated, But mine gains about 7 sec/day. Not bad, really.

Everyone knows Invicta Pro Diver is not an amazing watch. But it’s decent. It has decent automatic movement from Seiko, it has 200m of water resistance and it is really cheap. On selected pieces the quality may vary, so it is recommended to buy the watch from a store, rather than online. If You want to have classic looking diver and don’t want to spend hundreds or thousands of $/€/£ it is a viable option.
I also think there is a certain cool feeling about cheap, but functional watches. Some of them look really great and after years of use, you get this confirmation about it - It served me well, I wore it while swimming in seven seas and it was really affordable. Good choice.

Nice one Jenni, that outro would have been great for winding an automatic watch. Seriously some good advice though. I think most of us have fallen into at least one of the situations you describe. I've definitely done the same watch with a different dials but I have no regrets on those purchases but yes maybe that money might have been better saved or spent for some other different watch. Oddly I was looking to get a new cheap older battery powered classic G-Shock square for the last six months or so on a well known internet site and when the price dropped I bought it. It arrived but was slightly different to the advertised watch photos and the box information. Anyway it's a later version that I didn't know about and it's perfect so far and I have no intent on returning it as it was from the US and for the price to return it isn't worth doing. It ticks all of the boxes but it isn't the one that I was hunting down but I'm more than happy with it. Has it killed that original itch though..... we shall see.

Hilarious I have the exact Citizen shown as a "homage". I also have a Seiko "Seitona" SSC813 that looks like a Daytona. I think homages are fine if it's (1) from a reputable brand like Citizen/Seiko and (2) you're never going to buy the real thing. And unless Daytonas start selling for under 10k - I'm sure I'll never choose to buy one.

Wearing an homage watch is a good idea in numerous cities these days, where expensive watch brands attract the attention of dodgy individuals: cut your losses! Beyond that consideration, and looking at the terribly bloated prices of prestige watch brands when looking at the actual inputs in terms of manufacturing costs (Rolex is a perfect example), a decent homage watch is in fact the better purchase from a financial point of view.
I have a few of these, and happily wear them: why not? I don't care what others think. A well-made homage watch can be extremely reliable, and be more robust (for instance, 904 stainless steel used by Rolex scratches quite easily, as opposed to 316 stainless steel on the much cheaper homage and lower brand watches).
Wanting the original version for the sake of a personal craving for overall perfection is understandable, but if all you really want is a similar external styling with generally surprisingly accurate internal clockwork, the homage version is fine, IMO. I would really like to have a Rolex "Daytona", but sticker shock made me settle for a Chinese-made "Parnis" Homage version: it's perfectly OK, is cheaper than a plastic Swatch, and sports a fun Seiko VK-63 auto-quartz movement. What more do you want?
Don't get caught up in the money-draining status symbol trap, like most of the present day social media zombies out there. Last but not least, numerous upper market watches have most of their components "made in China" these days: that includes almost everything supposedly "Swiss Made" from Swatch Group.

    "don't buy homage watches"...
Why not? You can still flip them if you do grow tired of them - I've flipped five Steinharts without much difficulty and without taking a huge financial hit on any of them. If the choices are having to sit on a waiting list/having to buy additional crap you don't really want to "qualify" for the watch you *do* want or having to pay 10 - 30 percent surcharge on the grey market ... or getting a well made homage right now and for thousands less, I'm not sure why I would choose options a or b.
I mean: It's not like we're talking about spending a few hundred or even a couple of thousand more to get the real thing. If we're talking Rolex, it's often a difference in the five figure range. Plus if it's a faithful enough homage you can use it as a test-object to see if the real thing would work for you in daily wear. If it's uncomfortable or if you grow tired of how it looks on your wrist, you probably won't be happy with the real thing, either.

These days homage watches can often be pretty well made, reliable workhorse movements, sapphire crystals, SS cases - Why spend thousands on something you can get a decent "copy" of for $100....?

  • @MHolt9999

I was thinking of buying an Explorer 1 but thought I might get bored of it - so bought a £60 Chinese copy to live with (and did NOT pay the extra £20 to have Rolex on the dial).
It STILL turned up with Rolex on the dial - I once got a comment about it being a nice watch - I had to smile and say "It's a copy".
It took the heat out of wanting to buy an Explorer, and left me appreciating my genuine DateJust a bit more...
BTW the copy is scary good and keeps excellent time - the only way you'd know is by the winding feel and hand setting direction - watch, dial, strap and clasp are excellent - v scary!
Like Jenni mentions, if it ever breaks, it will be £60 down the drain, but having said that, it's 2 years old a been on plenty of holidays and nights out were wearing the real thing would be a risk.

I wanted an old Seiko dive watch, specifically the 1968-1970 vintage 6105-8000. I'm certainly not paying hundreds of dollars for a beat up franken-watch, as I wanted an authentic Seiko movement and I want the dings to be from when I fell off of a mountain, not someone else's dings. I bought a RDUNAE 6105-8000, aka slim turtle, and it's case measurements are identical to the old Seiko, right down to the 19mm lug width. It also has an upgraded sapphire crystal and improved screw-down crown. Months later and I'm still very happy with my purchase.

The moon swatch is a total dumpster fire. All the hype and demand for a toy watch that the time is right two times a day. Total crap. Forget about it's inability to tell time, I have to go to an authorized swatch store to get the battery changed, service work, etc. Yeah go you NEW York city to get a battery changed. Flag on the play. I have a original seamaster that is great and want a real moon watch. thinking hard against it right now. Bad customer experience.

Hey I say that's fair game, you got the look you wanted. Where it gets dirty is when people convince other people it's a real watch and then conveniently need to sell it at a "really good" price a couple months down the road.
Buying to enjoy = good. Buying to use trickery to gain advantage or money = scum.

    • @TheRealMafoo
      @TheRealMafoo 2 місяці тому

@@mastaboog749 I agree with this. However, I do have an issue with Pagani. There are two types of Homage watches. One is from a brand started by someone who loves the look of all the divers for example, and wants to make his own, where he borrows ideas from each, and maybe tweaks a few things... that's fine. You then have Pagani… where I imagine a cad designer is sitting there with a real watch in his hand, and knows any deviation from that design, is considered a failure. The goal is a 1 to 1 copy with a new logo. That to me, is really just a fake under the name of Homage.

Excellent topic. I bought a new 36mm (35.4mm) Rolex Explorer 124270 off the grey market and right away noticed how small it looked on my 19cm wrist and in proportion to my 195cm/95kg body. But I kept telling myself that I would get use to it and watching YT vids that validated this mindset. Instead of returning the watch, I decided to keep it and ended up selling it a few months later at a significant loss. I recently bought a 40mm Sea Dweller that I love. It is the perfect Rolex sport watch size IMOP - especially for bigger guys.

I see what you’re getting at with 6 (the repeat watch) but it’s completely at odds with my motivation as a vertical collector, exploring the variety within a model. I think maybe it’s more a case of understanding what sort of collector you are before buying the next watch - do you want a different complication each time, or a different use, or is it just a different dial colour you’re after? I was entirely driven by exploring the range of Heuer (pre-TAG) Carreras, now I’m doing the same with Speedies, so I am very deliberately buying repeat watches, just variations on a theme.

You only buy a hommage if the watch it pays hommage to either no longer exists or is a watch that is INSANELY expensive. I bought the Crepas after wanting a Longines Frogman. These Longines have been long gone or in a museum. A WW2 relic. Besides, the Crepas has its own pluses like a 1900m water resistance and built FAR better than the original. Or a Rolex MilSub hommage $80k. Get the hommage in that case.

Tbh I have a few reps that are close to 1:1 with the genuine watches. These are ones where you can't tell it's fake until you open it. I don't think it's wrong or "makes you fake" as you said. I can easily afford these watches as genuine, but buying a 99% equivalent watch for 5% of the price is not only savvy for someone that buys the watch out of joy, but it's a great trial. Different story as an investment or if you're trying to commit fraud / rip someone off.
In addition, many people buy watches for the story or conversation starter. A rep at this level of detail is an outstanding conversation starter - "can you believe they even replicated the steel makeup, weight, and the movement inside?!"... Anyway, just something cool to try it out and not break the bank.
The few reps I bought were actually well worth the money because now I know I don't actually like most of those watches that much after having it for a few months (especially the Rolex submariner... I really don't like that watch as much as I thought I would). I would have felt horrible if I spent $10-15k on a watch that I wasn't crazy about. On the other hand, the rep omega aqua terra I do really like and would consider buying the genuine. The world timer Black titatnium is $13K and I swear I almost bought it in the store. I stopped the impulse buy and got the rep first. After having it for a while I do like it, but not for $13k. Anyway... Point is I don't think there's much wrong with owning a rep as long as it's to indulge

Interesting that you showed the Seiko tank as an example of an homage, because... I got that one, but before I did I bought myself an homage - that is: an homage to the homage (from IBSO). For about 10% of the cost. It's a close call which of the two watches I like better. The hands on the Seiko are nicer, but that £20 Chinese watch has a better crown and much nicer watchband. The Cartier was not even an afterthought, I don't spend that kind of money on a single watch, ever.

Yes! I am not rich and don't want to impress people. At best I have 3 really expensive watches. I love watches and the aesthetics of at least a dozen other watches which I will never afford. Most I wouldn't buy if I had the money as they are massively overpriced. There are good quality homages where I can wear a near identical watch for a fraction of the price. Don't care if they break or get stolen. If anyone were to ask me, I am happy to explain my love of iconic watches and how a given homage reproduces the aesthetic. To the people above saying a 'fake' watch tells you a lot about the owner, well yes, I am a die hard watch enthusiast, not a pretender or investor. Note that watch design copyright is not forever and becomes public domain after a period of time and many are just that. The Chinese are doing to Japanese watches exactly what the Japanese did to Swatches. This discussion is akin to moneyed people talked about owning Bentleys and forgetting most of the world cannot afford them and simply do not care about showing rich or successful they are. Also most observers simply don't care.
