  • The MirrorEye camera monitor system from Stoneridge is the first system deployed in North America to replace traditional glass mirrors on trucks with an array of cameras and in-cab monitors. Presently, MirrorEye can be installed on trucks without requiring glass mirrors as backup thanks to a five-year exemption granted exclusively to the company by the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in 2018 (that exemption does not apply in Canada). This video looks at the components of the system and outlines how the technology actually improves visibility for drivers, especially at night.

after 48 years on hwy in europe and north america, bring it on.
i am in favor of this systems, especial when you can store the last 2 or 3 hours driving for insurances.
also with this mirrors you don't have a hug blind spot, like the new westernstar, where you can a whole 18 wheeler behind a pillar and the factory mirror.

Do they keep a record like a dashcam for accidents ? Could save a lot of finger pointing and accusations etc when involved in an accident.

The infrared is all fine and dandy till a Mercedes pulls up with its infrared headlights. Also it's impossible to move your head and get a different angle like you can with traditional mirrors.

You can actually control the camera lense, so actually, yes it is lol. You don't even have to move your head

I'm using one now, here's my real life opinion of them
    1. The mirrors are smaller than the normal glass ones, you lose about 30% or more of your vision, right off the bat.
    2. If wear glasses or just have not the best eyesight, you'll spend most your time guessing what's coming up behind you until right at rear trailers edge. Unlike regular glass mirror, your eyes cannot focus or bring into clarity what's on the monitor.
I feel less safe out there, as a driver, having to rely soley on these digital mirrors, sorry, but nothing can replace mans eyesight.
A real mirror allows driver to see further back at much greater distances, where as with this mirrors, everything just blurs together, until right up on you, unless I guess have perfect eyesight.
And since cannot gauge clearly what's behind you, how fast it's coming up on you, naturally you tend to hesitate when it comes to lane changes.
Driving a truck is not like playing a video game, and our job is hard enough as it is with regular mirrors, these mirrors simply diminish the drivers ability to gauge what's going on around the truck, they're a neat gadget for gadget geeks, but to remove normal glass mirrors and only rely on these, nah, watch as accidents begin to occur, and possibly lawsuits and drivers will claim 'It was the mirrors fault'..and victims Attornies probably will do the same.
