When I was bad in my alcoholism, I listened to this song every day before I got out of bed, to remember that there was a chance I could have a story like Johnny cash - addict turned preacher, “outlaw” who became successful. Thank you Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson for the music! We had such great music that I grew up with listening to in my car on my am radio. It was everyday and I took it for granted that it would always go on. It leaves a hole in my heart that it is gone.
Yep. Sometimes I didn’t even want to wake up. Ten years sober and this song just reminds me of how shitty and guilt ridden I felt on Sunday’s. “I caught the smell of somebody frying chicken and it took me back to a place that I had lost somewhere along the way.” That part gets me all the time!!! Stay sober, be safe and God Bless to All!!!
Heard this version by Johnny Cash on the American Forces radio the night before I flew out of Vietnam after 10 months there with the Australian Army. It struck a chord then and choked me up with bittersweet feelings of relief that I was going home but at the same time deep and profound thoughts of my mates who wouldn't be joining me. Every time I hear this the memories come flooding back and I'm reminded of this chapter of my life and loss of dear friends forever in my thoughts.

For some reason this song makes me happy. I remember when I was a teenager, my father drank every Saturday and he was always aggressive, either verbally or physically. I hated Saturdays but I loved Sundays because he was no longer drunk and he was so hungover that he was sick and couldn't drink. So I would go out in the mornings, stroll on the lonely sidewalks and think about this song. I thought, I can hear the church bells, I can see the sunshine, I can see good fathers swinging their children and everything is alright. And the next Saturday is far away. And I felt strong because I thought how my family doesn't even know this song and I do and it is my world where I can be safe. Today, the weekends are good. My father no longer drinks that much, I live separately and every Sunday I go to church and then visit my family. My mom makes the fried chicken, and everything is OK. Still, every Sunday morning it has become like a ritual to listen to this song and life feels good.

One of the biggest inspirations to me, thanks for everything johnny rest easy
Dutch? What the hell are you doin’ here? You should be in Tahiti by now!
This brings me inner peace
Like all great works of art, his voice reverberates through time and touches everything. Love you Johnny
Immortal.. The BEST OF COUNTRY
The test of a person that can sing.... Live. No special effects to distract, dancing nearly naked bodies and no miming! Sounds like the a studio recording
It is a great privilege to hear this song from the master of music.
I loved when my dad would get into the beer and get out his guitar. Gone 13 years today
Makes cry 😢
Defying the TV censors' warning not to sing about "being stoned", JC sings the original lyrics as written by his friend Kris. Remembering one of the Great American Originals on his 91st bday.,,ps...RIP to this masterpiece's writer, the great Kris Kristofferson. Give our love to JC.
I lived this life.
Love this song
One of my favourite Cash offerings. Thank you, Kris Kristofferson, for penning this beautiful ode!
Great tune. Great lyrics. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music/Sacred & Secular #Music4URSpirit
