My father in law was another, it took him just over 25 yrs. to kill himself with brandy. He saw the worst of what Europe had to offer, and never received the five medals he was decorated with, they went to his widow and six kids. We had the alblum 'Bitter Tears' by Johnny Cash. I played it over and over, for myself and my children. This song bothered me, as did the rest of the songs. I am Canadian, but the things done to the natives of North America in both Canada and the U. S. cannot be undone. But we should remember their sufferings and trials with shame, even though perpetrated by the governments of the day. I truly respect Native peoples who were so badly disrespected. Who, but they, knew what was going on? Yes, the feds did. Thank you J. C. for the wake up call, although too late for the truly oppressed.
I remember seeing the movie about Ira Hayes back in 69. What a tragic story showing the injustice toward our first peoples. Johnny Cash stands tall among the balladers of our time.

They went on liberties together and shared rides to leaves together. He always talked about Ira as a very great man! He said it was a shame what happened after he returned,, because what should be remembered is the great Patriot he was!❤💔💙❤ I hope they reconnected in heaven March 3 of this year, when my father in law left this earth 4 days after his 100'th Birthday. I hope that as Americans we never forget the men that fought for our freedoms and all that paid the ultimate price for our liberty. God Bless them all.
One of the big reasons I like Johnny Cash, even though he died when I was 2 or 3, is that he always spoke out for those who didn’t have a voice and deserved one. Prisoners whose conditions were horrid, soldiers fighting for a government that didn’t care about them, and Native Americans. Unfortunately, he never really brought up the plight of African Americans despite being at the height of his popularity during the civil rights movement. That’s definitely understandable though as his audience was primarily white southerners, so it basically would have been career suicide to pick a side in the movement. Great song and sung by a great storyteller.
Tom Eskew he didn’t sing about the African Americans because every one else did. They had a voice the prisoners didn’t the natives didn’t bitter tears was nearly suicide but he still released it
Thats cuz during the civil rights movement people were already singing for the rights of African Americans. Were they marginalized and had a relatively smaller voice? Yeah but it was slowly growing and becoming more powerful. But prisoners and Natives and soldiers? They were just forgotten. He was the only voice they had before Johnny
God🌄Bless Johnny Cash for taking the time to record this song about a real American Hero the Pima Indian from Arizona Pvt. Ira Hayes 5th Marine Div. WW2. Iwo Jima "Semper Fi/Always Faithful" 🇺🇸🌄☝️👍

Thank u. So much! I am old enough to remember. All my uncle's served in the armed forces. And my dad. 5 good men. Thank God they came home safe. They had battle scars. My former husband served in nam. Was a bad war. I shall not reiterate The. Reprocussions of this. U would not believe it. Was hard! All i can say is. U ain't lived it til u been thru it. So i do not want to hear no. Excuses from those who are not proud to serve America. I would have! Nobody would sign my papers so that i could. I was so proud to be an American. Just wasn't old enough to sign my own papers. I asked my dad to sign for me?. He said he couldn't. He did not have custody of me. Wasn't gonna ask my sorry mom to do it. She already kicked me out. Best thing she ever did in my life. She a joke. I made it!! I worked 2 jobs. And sent her $ to take care if my siblings. , and my step dad. He had. T.b. he always said he had tired butt. He evidently acquired it overseas in the war. He was a good man. Never a bad word to me. He was my daddy's brother. Raised us kids like his own. He had other kids. Grandad raised them. See he was married before. Had 4 by a previous marriage.

@@jeenieshepherd2201 I live in Vietnam and a lot of people here have that same allergy.
@@ben9262 wheat, barley and crops like that aren’t native to North America that’s why
I grew up very close to where he died. It's so sad I'd cry when I'd walk by.
Hello Angel how are you doing
R.I.P. Great Great grandfather
I remember with you
Love and Peace
This song makes me cry 😢
As an aspring Marine, who likes Johnny Cash' music, I love this song.
God bless you. Thank you for doing what the rest of us aren't brave enough to
I get so emotional Everytime I listen to this song!!!! And Ira Hayes is one of my all time heroes!!!! He is so awesome!!!!
I remember seeing the movie about Ira Hayes back in 69. What a tragic story showing the injustice toward our first peoples. Johnny Cash stands tall among the balladers of our time.
Yep he was a great story teller from this 1 to Johnny Reb to I’m busted,Casey Jones so many to choose from,I have always loved Johnny Cash !!
The Outsider, with Tony Curtis as Ira Hayes.
Bob, I was young when Ira did his thing but he was my hero tho he was not of my tribe! He is an example of what Natives went through and are third class citizens today!Little Owl
This is why Cash will always be a national treasure, a true American.
There’s no country singer these days that come close to telling a story like Johnny Cash
My father-in-law who was in the Marine Corps at Iwo Jima , one of the 1st to land there, was hit with mortor shrapnel and taken to the medical ship, where he watched the flag being raised. He later served in our Police Department, making Chief, then after retirement, went on to serve 20 more years in Department of Labor.
He told stories of Ira Hayes. He was good friends with him. Thank you Ira Hayes for your service sir!❤🎉
No singer living or dead could replace Cash.

God Bless them all.
Thank you for your service, RIP Ira Hayes.
This is definitely a patriotic song. Remember Ira Hayes. Always.
Johnny Cash had so much heart he gave to so many injustices done to native peoples and all people rip Mr cash and June
yes ,but this is a bob dylan song . Robert Zimmerman was from Gallop NM
They had a voice the prisoners didn’t the natives didn’t bitter tears was nearly suicide but he still released it
Youre wrong. Listen to the ballad of John Henry.
Tom Eskew and
"He never brought up the plight",,, listen to the entire album, Bitter Tears.
God🌄Bless Johnny Cash for taking the time to record this song about a real American Hero the Pima Indian from Arizona Pvt. Ira Hayes 5th Marine Div. WW2. Iwo Jima "Semper Fi/Always Faithful" 🇺🇸🌄☝️👍
Respect Mr Hayes.
I remember my parents playing this record. I just visited the Johnny cash museum in Nashville tennis de, it’s a must visit if you are ever in the area. I think Johnny was one of the greatest singer songwriters of two centuries. His talent spans every genre, and I think every generation.
Hello Donna how are you doing today dear I hope all is well with you and your family? Have a nice day. I have bee happy 😃all day because of this song 🎵 just keep remaining me of my dad and mom
Most all WW2 veterans who saw heavy action had post traumatic stress disorder.
But unlike veterans of later wars they got no help for alcoholism for their sacrifices .
God bless IRA Hayse..
Just a damn shame he went through hell and made it home to succumb to a death like that without help.
JUST ANOTHER GREAT SONG BY JOHNNY 💙 CASH 💙 REST IN PEACE JOHNNY 💙 AND JUNE 💞 YOU BOTH WILL BE MISSED BY MILLIONS
RIP Ira and Semper Fi brother 🙏

We will not forget Ira Hayes ... who gave so much, and got so little!
The story of him performing Nixon’s White House and refusing to play well fair cadillac is the definition of icon
Great respect and love for all american natives ! For me an excellent song for the man in black: real country legend and true american. From Italy

On behalf of my old man, thank you, Johnny.
All native peoples should be remember to keep our land free and never forgotten .remember they volunteered to go to serve this great land .They fought in a war just like my grandfather just like lra hayes .
Hello how are you doing?
such a tragic song, as i listen to the words of johnny cash i realized i'd heard of the name Ira Hayes before and his struggle.
its a good tribute to a life lost. RIP Ira Hayes
Thank you IRA Hayes for your service. This Canadian will never forget you thanks to Johnny cash you deserved much better
I want to dedicate this to my Uncle Don and my uncle Leroy who are in the Marine.. they both fought in war. And also I want to thank all the Marines who fought and gave their life a great big thank you
Thank u.
As far as I'm concerned this is one of johnny cashs best song's, and just because I've jhis portrait tattooed on me, im not being bias, great song. RIP J.C.
Hello how are you doing?
Call me an old softy, but it this song always brings me too tears.
Taps played on the flute always sends chills down my spine.
Aww, man... That chorus brought me to tears!
It reminds me of when the first time i went through my Dad's old records, and i first came across this song, and now that i've found who sings it, it just sent me right back to the moment i was going through they records!
By now, of course i know Johnny Cash! 😉👍
Partmost folks missed ok? is that he is holding a crow in his arms...... That's incredible! Blessings My Brother

This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it
A Sad state of affairs when a Nation cannot give proper recognition to one of its Heroes. Thank You Johnny Cash for having done so.
I'm Very Proud to be part Cherokee , and it's wonderful to hear Johnny Cash memorializing a TRUE NATIVE AMERICAN HERO ! ! !
I'm Cherokee as well!
Ira Hayes thank you
So powerful!! Such a complex song, deep, mysterious and dark.
My great grandfather was in the navy and fought in the Pacific and was off shore abord the USS chester CA-27 cruiser thank God for brave men like our grandfather's and there sacrifice so we can enjoy great ballets like this rip Ira Hayes you are a true American hero and honored your ancestors well thank you
Never heard this before. Holy cow that made a crazy powerful first impression!
When I was young my grandma would drop me off at school in the morning and almost every morning we would play the essential Johnny Cash album on CD and this song in particular is the song that we always sing together... this song brings back so many memories to me
What a talent
Veterans that put aside the injustices of their time and laid their lives down for We the People are double heroes. I'm moved by Ira's story and honored to be related to a Vet of his same spirit
Semper Fi, Ira Hayes.
