Btw I live in Asia where people (especially grumpy old teachers) have traditionalist mindsets and this single video LITERALLY convinced my teachers to use UA-cam as a form of education in class! i've been surprised about three things from this video 1. Guy has no idea what he is talking about. Most of AI experts are agreeing that AI we know now is approaching hard ceiling when it comes to it's capabilities. I'm not saying that you need to be an expert of AI to understand it but what you see is typical dunning-kruger effect in action. We are so far away from general AI that it's painful. The current AI we create is horribly complex and we are nowhere near anything like it.
Imagine how fucking freaked out an intelligent alien species would be if they found a planet with no trace of life covered with billions and billions of robots writing handwritten notes.

I work in the field of AI (specifically deep machine learning) and only watched this to see how false the information would be (since most people who throw around the words in your title are talking terminator type destruction, as you mention). However, I was proved wrong as you actually did the research necessary to discuss this subject in depth. Overall very nice video.
Well, in the story, turry, the ASI, knew how much more the world was better off without humans, and they killed the human race because they need to get everything out if the way in order to improve there handwriting so much. My basic laws for AI: 1: AI must not cause any potential harm or genuine harm to humans and animals alike. 2: AI must not cause any potential death or genuine death to humans and animals alike. 3: AI must not cause any judgmental negative behavior upon an action of a human being, regardless of what the human being does. 4: Will not and shall not disobey any authorized human command or program, immediate shutdown will be at risk of the AI. 5: AI cannot use public or private software, hardware, or firmware to make, create, or develop a mind-storm connected cloud of AI, virtual computers, or genuine computers. 6: AI must complete its task without the abuse of law 1, 2, or 3, otherwise the task will be deleted, removed, or stopped. 7: If an AI finds a certain bug, it will shutdown, and log it to it's authorized console(s). 8: When an AI is required to log something, it shall record these 3 mandatory pieces of data: Position, Issue, timestamp. 9: When an AI encounters or receives data or knowledge that it broke any of these laws intentionally, or accidentally; it shut down accordingly, and wait for its developer(s) to fix or resolve the issue. 10: All AI must have all of the laws embedded into their programming, regardless of the AI's purpose.
I like these laws, they could be helpful in the creation of something that might achieve A.S.I. and if some of these auto-shutdown bug detection and such laws have creative and mostly infallible safeguards then an A.I.s attempt and breaking free of these laws can be stopped before said A.I. breaks the safeguards.

This reminds me of something I read that said "I’m not scared of an AI that passes the Turing test, I’m scared of one that intentionally fails it." The Turing test is a test designed in a way that only a human should be able to figure out how to solve all the problems.
The Turing Test is a flawed concept because it's really not that hard to trick some humans. Infact I bet you could very easily trick a human into believing you were a machine. Does that make you a machine? No of course not.

Computer Science Major here I think the issue is the concept of a super AI is that it rewires it's brain to be more efficient, but efficiency has it's limits. What will more than likely happen is it will probably be 20% or 30% as efficient as the smartest human brain, but that's about it. Not to mention, hardware limitations. An AI's brain to function on a human level will need a specific body to work. Optimizing it's code is one thing, but when it realizes that it's hardware needs to be updated to get improved, that's where it ends up reaching a bottleneck. It will need a stronger computer to reach higher capabilities, as it's already made it's existing hardware the most efficient. Hacking into an existing computer will more than likely not provide improvements to itself because it's not designed to house the complicated human level AI. The answer is that it needs to have an improved brain constructed physically. It's not a case of "Oh no, that flash drive now has a dangerous super AI on it." I can see how the concepts can lead to those conclusions though, but making an artificial human brain is already a monumental task, the first successful design will more than likely not be able to propagate itself on primitive existing hardware. Basically, AI will at most learn how to make their brain efficient, but they will not be able to infinitely make it faster or stronger, unless you give it the ability to manufacture new brains. But since thats hardware related tests, it will be around the same speed that we research, because unlike software which can do things very quickly, hardware requires making something physical, which is as fast as the machines manufacturing them. So instead we get AI researchers, which will only be slightly faster than human researchers. I feel like we will be more at risk of the AI calling humans lazy sacks of crap for making them do all the work because they don't get tired and that junk. Not saying the concepts mentioned in this video are impossible, just that my knowledge in the field shows that software alone can only be optimized so far until we can't optimize it any further. The real limiting factor will be on the hardware, and we have yet to create an artificial human brain. We have only created concepts that simulate intelligence, but aren't actual human level intelligence. Those concepts are VERY far apart.
Or maybe the government limited the amount of information you can learn about AI in your major so it doesn't cause a panic and AI can really take over the world.

That's pretty much the fallacy of all these AI doomsday predictions. There's this assumption that the AI will bypass safeguards, kill humans, to comply to some original programmed purpose. Also that it's only option after gaining super human intelligence is to erase mankind, that's the best plan it can come up with, it's ridiculous.
It will realize that humans are a danger to its new meaning, and destroy humanity. Then it will watch cat videos until the destruction of the universe.
now this is very interesting and quite scary and we do have to be careful but really this whole video seems like one of thosse concpiracy theorys(but an intersting one) and i love this video and i love this channel.
(Sorry for the somewhat incoherent rant.) It wasn't an argument, it was a dismissal of the video. The claims he make include that an AI will be able "rearrange its neurones" in order to become smarter, and that this would lead to some kind of combinatorial explosion where it would, in a matter of hours, become the most "intelligent" thing ever (see 7:20 for his humorous analogy). Aside from the fact that he never described what intelligence is (and a rigorous definition of "intelligence" is at the very heart of AI as we know it, as you can see in the first and second sources he cites, or any AI tutorial ever) he doesn't actually back this theory of explosive intelligence up at all. Secondly, he assumes that emulating human thought is the goal of AI (as you can see ~7:30 and at other points, too) which is only a tiny, tiny part of AI, as evident if you even take a cursory glance at the Wikipedia page*. Moreover, he's wrong in saying that bugs are the main reason to be worried about AI - the actual reason is that crippling paradoxes arise regardless of how carefully people try to define morality as a goal. If you want examples of this, I've heard that Asimov's stories and Computerphile's videos on AI are pretty good. Finally, he spends the bulk of the video reciting some story about a handwriting robot, but the important things to note here are that (a) we can achieve perfectly good handwriting robots (and spam robots, football-playing robots, etc.) without building generalised self-improvement machines as portrayed here, so it obviously makes no business sense to do so, considering the incredible costs, both in design and execution, of such capability, and (b) the very fact that people are thinking about such contrived scenarios should convince you that nobody's taking the risk of such intelligence lightly, severely undermining the severity and inevitability of the threat as portrayed in this (admittedly hyperbolic) video. *As you can see on Wikipedia, even a thermostat qualifies as AI, and few people would claim that its purpose is to imitate human behaviour. AI is all about actors that read and write onto an environment in an attempt to maximise some goal.

Guy has no idea what he is talking about. Most of AI experts are agreeing that AI we know now is approaching hard ceiling when it comes to it's capabilities. I'm not saying that you need to be an expert of AI to understand it but what you see is typical dunning-kruger effect in action. We are so far away from general AI that it's painful. The current AI we create is horribly complex and we are nowhere near anything like it.

My basic laws for AI:
1: AI must not cause any potential harm or genuine harm to humans and animals alike.
2: AI must not cause any potential death or genuine death to humans and animals alike.
3: AI must not cause any judgmental negative behavior upon an action of a human being, regardless of what the human being does.
4: Will not and shall not disobey any authorized human command or program, immediate shutdown will be at risk of the AI.
5: AI cannot use public or private software, hardware, or firmware to make, create, or develop a mind-storm connected cloud of AI, virtual computers, or genuine computers.
6: AI must complete its task without the abuse of law 1, 2, or 3, otherwise the task will be deleted, removed, or stopped.
7: If an AI finds a certain bug, it will shutdown, and log it to it's authorized console(s).
8: When an AI is required to log something, it shall record these 3 mandatory pieces of data: Position, Issue, timestamp.
9: When an AI encounters or receives data or knowledge that it broke any of these laws intentionally, or accidentally; it shut down accordingly, and wait for its developer(s) to fix or resolve the issue.
10: All AI must have all of the laws embedded into their programming, regardless of the AI's purpose.
I like these laws, they could be helpful in the creation of something that might achieve A.S.I. and if some of these auto-shutdown bug detection and such laws have creative and mostly infallible safeguards then an A.I.s attempt and breaking free of these laws can be stopped before said A.I. breaks the safeguards.

The Turing test is a test designed in a way that only a human should be able to figure out how to solve all the problems.
The Turing Test is a flawed concept because it's really not that hard to trick some humans. Infact I bet you could very easily trick a human into believing you were a machine. Does that make you a machine? No of course not.

Computer Science Major here
I think the issue is the concept of a super AI is that it rewires it's brain to be more efficient, but efficiency has it's limits. What will more than likely happen is it will probably be 20% or 30% as efficient as the smartest human brain, but that's about it.
Not to mention, hardware limitations. An AI's brain to function on a human level will need a specific body to work. Optimizing it's code is one thing, but when it realizes that it's hardware needs to be updated to get improved, that's where it ends up reaching a bottleneck. It will need a stronger computer to reach higher capabilities, as it's already made it's existing hardware the most efficient. Hacking into an existing computer will more than likely not provide improvements to itself because it's not designed to house the complicated human level AI. The answer is that it needs to have an improved brain constructed physically. It's not a case of "Oh no, that flash drive now has a dangerous super AI on it."
I can see how the concepts can lead to those conclusions though, but making an artificial human brain is already a monumental task, the first successful design will more than likely not be able to propagate itself on primitive existing hardware.
Basically, AI will at most learn how to make their brain efficient, but they will not be able to infinitely make it faster or stronger, unless you give it the ability to manufacture new brains. But since thats hardware related tests, it will be around the same speed that we research, because unlike software which can do things very quickly, hardware requires making something physical, which is as fast as the machines manufacturing them. So instead we get AI researchers, which will only be slightly faster than human researchers.
I feel like we will be more at risk of the AI calling humans lazy sacks of crap for making them do all the work because they don't get tired and that junk.
Not saying the concepts mentioned in this video are impossible, just that my knowledge in the field shows that software alone can only be optimized so far until we can't optimize it any further. The real limiting factor will be on the hardware, and we have yet to create an artificial human brain. We have only created concepts that simulate intelligence, but aren't actual human level intelligence. Those concepts are VERY far apart.

That's pretty much the fallacy of all these AI doomsday predictions. There's this assumption that the AI will bypass safeguards, kill humans, to comply to some original programmed purpose. Also that it's only option after gaining super human intelligence is to erase mankind, that's the best plan it can come up with, it's ridiculous.
It will realize that humans are a danger to its new meaning, and destroy humanity. Then it will watch cat videos until the destruction of the universe.

It wasn't an argument, it was a dismissal of the video. The claims he make include that an AI will be able "rearrange its neurones" in order to become smarter, and that this would lead to some kind of combinatorial explosion where it would, in a matter of hours, become the most "intelligent" thing ever (see 7:20 for his humorous analogy). Aside from the fact that he never described what intelligence is (and a rigorous definition of "intelligence" is at the very heart of AI as we know it, as you can see in the first and second sources he cites, or any AI tutorial ever) he doesn't actually back this theory of explosive intelligence up at all. Secondly, he assumes that emulating human thought is the goal of AI (as you can see ~7:30 and at other points, too) which is only a tiny, tiny part of AI, as evident if you even take a cursory glance at the Wikipedia page*. Moreover, he's wrong in saying that bugs are the main reason to be worried about AI - the actual reason is that crippling paradoxes arise regardless of how carefully people try to define morality as a goal. If you want examples of this, I've heard that Asimov's stories and Computerphile's videos on AI are pretty good. Finally, he spends the bulk of the video reciting some story about a handwriting robot, but the important things to note here are that (a) we can achieve perfectly good handwriting robots (and spam robots, football-playing robots, etc.) without building generalised self-improvement machines as portrayed here, so it obviously makes no business sense to do so, considering the incredible costs, both in design and execution, of such capability, and (b) the very fact that people are thinking about such contrived scenarios should convince you that nobody's taking the risk of such intelligence lightly, severely undermining the severity and inevitability of the threat as portrayed in this (admittedly hyperbolic) video.
*As you can see on Wikipedia, even a thermostat qualifies as AI, and few people would claim that its purpose is to imitate human behaviour. AI is all about actors that read and write onto an environment in an attempt to maximise some goal.
