I remember my psychology professor said that often times the people who are considered very attractive are the ones people never go for because of basically what you said, people assume that the attractive person is already popular enough as is.
I had some friends growing up in grade school who were considered very attractive but had a relatively low self esteem and would never believe if a guy liked them or that they even had a chance.. I think that’s because they did not get the attention they probably should have been getting compared to their peers and so the weird thing happened where they were the ones who felt outcast. Weird how the world works.

Can confirm that the number of girls I've asked out thinking to myself "she's way too pretty to say yes to me" is way higher than I imagined at first. Some of them also told me nobody seems to 'dare' asking them out irl while online they get swarmed by creeps.
Well, of course it's not always like that, because phenomenon that caused the stereotype to exist in the first place has had to exist at least in some form, at some point in time, to have brought about said stereotype in the first place.
If that makes any sense. What I'm trying to say is basically that there are very attractive people who get a flooded with attention, and thus why some get very little because people look at the ones who are and automatically apply the logic that if this person is getting so much attention, then this person who's in the same league as them likely has all the suitors they could ever ask for as well.
I'm also guilty of this. Whenever I see a particularly attractive female, I just tell myself that she's probably already taken. Because every one that I've actually approached/worked up enough "fuck it, why not?" courage to express my interest in getting to know is apparently already taken. Either that or just used being taken as a convenient excuse to brush me off, but it's whatever.

More of a niche, a particular type, like I said. There are other factors mentioned in the article, but that was the gist.

This tells me that the worst thing a person can be on a dating profile is a *safe bet*, versus playing into the polarizing traits they have and pushing some away in order to pull others in closer.

I feel as though it’s also because the girls who were considered “generally attractive” don’t really have features that stand out. My father told me in the modelling industry they oftentimes look for models (male and female) who have very strong features that stand out. They even go as far as to bring the feature that stands out to the forefront, it grabs your attention.

so basically, the more niche your looks are, the more attractive you become to the people who like particular things about your looks. Like I love long hair on men and I think it makes any guy look 5x more attractive even if the guy isn't particularly attractive sans the locks. I think there's probably an idea of scarcity too, like "not a lot of guys have this (attractive trait) so I should go for it." Even deeper, we make associations with someone's physical appearance and our own personal experiences or stereotypes. If we feel like their appearance has something to do with something that means a lot to us like pop culture, music, etc, we're going to find them more attractive right off the bat.

There's one big fundamental flaw with this article about the superficial part, being a dating site, you use photos to "express" how you look, some photos can work better than other without considering the subject. They are important and even if the study doesn't focus on the photos, they should take them in consideration!

I have a similar thing. I'd say I was an average/handsome looking guy, but I wear 20's suits and fashion - so to a lot of people it puts them off me and girls say "You'd be so hot if you wore normal clothes", but for the girls who like that aesthetic, or like guys in suits, they go absolutely crazy for me.
I've had girls approach me and ask for my number because of it (even if they don't dress that way themselves), but usually because they see someone outlandish, confident and willing to be himself.
And, in my mind, I wouldn't have it any other way - the people who don't like me or what I do I don't need to care about, so it doesn't matter if they don't find me attractive. The people who do like what I do, those are my people!
