- Hey guys :)
I thought I'd quickly pop on and show you how to make traditional Scottish Shortbread! A few of you have asked for it...so here it is! This is just the basic recipe, but you can add things like chocolate chips, coconut, nuts or flavourings :) But I like plain. I've listed the ingredients below if you wan't to give it a go!

Thanks for stopping by guys :) x
This is almost exactly how my husband makes it (save the sugar sprinkled on top). His mom taught him, and he found that to get the real feel of the dough took quite some time. He was in his 40’s before he felt his matched up with his moms. He has since won a blue ribbon at our State Fair for his shortbread! Thanks for showing the real Scottish Shortbread.
Is your award winning shortbread recipe the same?
So glad to see just three ingredients!! My grandfather and my grandmother (both Scots) always said that the only ingredients in shortbread were butter, sugar, and flour! To this day - this is exactly the recipe I use for my shortbread!
OMG! Just made these they are so amazing!! Thank you! 😘😘😘
For Us Americans I did the conversion
Flour: 1 cup, 2 tbsp.
Sugar: 1/4 cup
Butter: 1/2 cup
Bake @375°
15-20 minutes
I'm making it now... thanks for the conversions!
Thank you Karrie...I was going to weigh it out, but this will save time.
🙌🙌🙌🙌
Thank you !!!
did you use salted or unsalted butter? ive heard of both. ive made it before but cant remember what i used
Back in the '80s, my boss, who was from Scotland, brought Shortbread cookies home for me as a present, and I immediately fell in love with them. His wife had the recipe. I remember making them once or twice, but the recipe was lost. I recently searched for the recipe on the internet but only found recipes with powdered sugar, and I remember using plain sugar. The only difference I remember is that I was told to refrigerate the dough for an hour or so before baking. Thank you so much for the recipe!! And thanks to the American below who converted the measurements!
I am in awe/shock!
That is the fastest most simple shortbread recipe that I have seen!
I am so impressed, plus, - no mixer!
I can no longer tell my kids I don't have time to make shortbread!
THANKS!! ( a lot, really!! )
LOL!
Plus- my but that cuppa looked so inviting!
I love shortbread and Scotland is a beautiful country with beautiful people.
Aw thank you for your lovely comment :)
@@WhatsForTea found your channel recently and I love it and your presentation. So nicely simple. I like to bake and I have made shortbread for many years. Just your simple recipe, same one that my Gran in Garelochead taught me. You know the measure of your shortbread, how tender it is! For the past couple of years I have been taking the mix to the crumb stage and then simply pressing it into the shapes I want at that stage. Into a glass pan to cut into fingers when cooked. Or a round to cut wedges. The gluten is not activated and tender, Oh yes. No rice flour needed. Keep on making the great videos. I live in America now.
I would like to know which part of Scotland you been because when I got there, the people are the complete opposite of what you say
There are plenty of bad sorts there also.
Thanks, I'm from Scotland
i made it today but I added lemon zest and then half dipped the shortbread with white chocolate. I think it’s the best recipe I have ever made. Thank you x
Yum
Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe for traditional Scottish Shortbread! Our Mum was a wee Bonnie Lass born in Glasgow in 1920 who passed at the age of 80. She truly loved her tea and shortbread!! We learned about all of the fantastic Scottish foods from her and try to find and eat them even today. God Bless you and your Family. Rob Allen.
God bless the Scots 🙏❤️🙏
The accent sells it.
The simplest; the best. I stumbled upon your recipe back in 2020 and have never even bothered to try any other. Thanks for sharing! Florianópolis, Brazil. 🏴❤🇧🇷
Some recipes should not be trifled with. This is an old quaint traditional biscuit and I love them my dear grandma took her Scottish recipe with her to heaven....I miss her so...she’s with my mother now... bless u...
Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best Mike :) Thanks for stopping by x
I have wonderful memories of warm, delicious Scottish shortbread. My high-school cafeteria had had a few Scottish women who worked there. They made the most delicious shortbread, I would get it every day. 😆 Kearny, NJ USA 🇺🇸
Ah yes! This is the way to make shortbread. My mom used to make this at Christmas every year. Every neighbor and teacher at the school waited to get their package of Jessie's shortbread. So simple and delicious.
My husband’s co workers start asking for this starting in October!
I followed your recipe and baked these shortbread for more than 20 times. Very easy and delicious.
I have just stumbled across your channel and my heart is so happy! I could listen to you for forever. Your shortbread recipe is just like my Mama Bruce’s. In fact her written recipe measurements say to use a tea cup ☺️. She always made the fingers. Oh how I miss her. ❤️
I have never tried shortbread because I thought it was very hard to make. You make it look so easy, I think I can do it ! I could listen to you speak all such a beautiful accent & voice,.
Thanks Marilyn :) It's so so easy to make! It's delicious too....thanks for your kind comments x
Honestly, it's just about the easiest thing to make that exists!
Cheryl, I just made this recipe today and these little cookies (I am in America) are wonderful. So glad I came across your video. Thanks!
I don't want to confuse myself by trying all other shortbread recipes. This one is good, easy and simple steps and I bake it at least twice a month for the last three years.
I make these every week for my local farmer’s market. Usually three batches, but after last week, I’m making at least eight! They’re popular! Yummy!
Lovely Cheryl , cant beat a good strong cuppa and a bit of shortbread. Yum yum 👍
Agreed Sandra :)
Easy memory aid. 2 4 6. 2 oz sugar. 4 oz butter. 6 oz flour. Thanks for making this video.
Absolutely love your accent, you sound just like my mum, I have lost of my accent but you can hear a wee bit of it.
Thanks for the recipe!
Thank you so much for your videos. Love the easy explanations and I LOV LOVE LOVE listening to your lovely Scots. Sometimes I'm watching just because I want to have a little Scottish feeling ☺. Greetings from the Highlands of Bavaria (alpine region) 💙🏴💙
Love this cookies. I made them several times. I also love you the way you say “pop up” 😊Thanks for sharing your recipe
So great, dishes I grew up on and have missed so much since my Mum is gone. So now it’s my turn to try these for my family.
I'm Scottish and feeling homesick. I watched as much for the recipe as for the accent 😅 My Mum used to make this for me. I was the only one in the family that loved shortbread. Thank you! Bless
It’s Christmas and this shortbread has always been a favourite of mine at this time. This is my first year making it myself and I was so thrilled to find your recipe. Thank you so much for sharing!
My favorite biscuit. Thanks and best wishes to the brave heart people of "wee" Scotland.
Thank you so much for your recipe! My mother went to Scotland for a school exchange when she was my age and she has a lot of love for the food and the culture. She is having not so great of a day and I think that this is going to cheer her up :)
Lots of love from France!
Nice and simple, I'm going to do them tonight for my wife and son. Gas mark 5 is 375°F (190°C) if anyone wants to know the conversion. I have very fond memories of Scotland in the 1980's. I travelled extensively on an old 500cc Kawasaki motor bike especially around Kilmartin and Oban and travelling beside Loch Lomond was a treasured memory with some of the best roads in the world. The best roads are the ones that are least travelled.
Love your channel, and best wishes from Salisbury East in South Australia. Paul.
Oh thanks I was in trouble "Gas Mark 5" 🤔now I learn it means 190°C for German

I agree Debbie! :) I'll take a nice strong cup of tea over a glass of wine any day x
My family is from Scotland and my Nanny Stewart always made us Scottish shortbread cookies every Christmas. I love them
My boyfriend and his brother had planned a trip together in Scotland and would have been visiting this week. He hides his disappointment well. I made pub pies last week following your recipe and he was so happy. I will try this shortbread recipe as he has a Walker’s shortbread every evening while we watch Still Game. ☺️
I love listening to u...your voice reminds me of my grandma...not age ....voice....my wife and I are coming to Ireland 🇮🇪 ( her roots) and we are coming to 🏴 Scotland, ( my moms roots)...I was there as a little (lad), when I was five , wow that was 60 years ago...I loved Edinburgh...and the Castles...I wanted a suit of armor so bad...thank u for the instruction and demonstration..
Hi Mike :) Edinburgh is a wonderful city! I lived there for a few years. Thanks for your lovely comments and for stopping by x
I cannot wait to try this, as I'm addicted to Walker's😊
Yummy yum! Stay safe and God Bless! Thank you! - from Montana USA
Wonderful. I make them with lemon and lavender. Love your accent and your way of cooking. Keep up the good work.
Those are so easy. I was taught to make them in a square cake pan (like bars) and they take so much longer to bake. I’m going to try your way!
La dame est sympathique, avec son accent écossais ! 😊 Elle donne envie d'essayer sa recette.
Looks delicious! Just like some fresh shortbread I enjoyed in Scotland in November 2019! I miss them both!
Greetings from Brunei. Thank you for sharing this recipe.

Your personality shines through your video, you sound so nice that I wish I could sit and have a cup of tea with shortbread and chat to you 🥰 All the best
Shortbread looks yummy, looks like real decent cup of tea as well !!
I like strong tea Thomas :) I buy the Yorkshire Tea branded teabags (which is VERY strong!)
I Love the welcome accent and the simplicity of the recipe...exactly like my mother’s...always a treat at Christmas.
Thank you, I'm gonna try that right now - will go lovely with the cold weather we having in the Kingdom of Eswatini! All I'll be short of is that lovely accent.
A cup of tea with milk no sugar, a couple of shortbread biscuits - lovely!!!! Exactly what I do too 😊 thank you for sharing you recipe!
I make shortbread as well, my shortbread is melt in the mouth and the secret is don’t make it into a dough but put your mix into a baking tin a gently pat it down and cook. Then cut into fingers whilst warn. Also the secret ingredients is half plain and half cornflour and the sugar I use is icing sugar. I have just discovered your channel and I just want to say thank you for the recipes and bringing back memories of my childhood❤
Thanks so much! I'm Scottish American and I am going to make these with my wee Granddaughter 👍👍👍
With that beautiful red hair, I'd say your scottish🙏❤️
Thank you SO much. Just found out I have some Scottish in my family tree. Will be making these for Christmas for the family. Happy Holidays!
Being an international student at the University of St. Andrews, this was the first thing I fell in love with. They are so delicious and happy to see that they easy to make as well. Thanks so much for this video.
Fantastic! Thank you very much! Not only a great recipe but such a marvelous way to share and explain on top of it, I just love it.
I just saw packages of Walker's Shortbread at Cost Plus World Market here in California and went nuts because I love a good traditional shortbread. I grabbed a package up and brought it home, dug in, and was in heaven. :)
I've made it before myself but it's been a long time and buying was just easier right now. I'll have to make some more myself sometime soon.
Hahaha! I always use automatic subtitles when I see videos in english (non-native speaker with concentration issues) and at 2:10 it says "Once you've added all your floating gays..." Haha, I wonder where I'll find that ingredient? Otherwise, wonderful video and I love your accent
Samir C. Cat oh! 😁👍

I love Scottish shortbread. I can buy the Walkers brand here in the states, but I was thrilled when I bought several boxes of it during my visit to Scotland. Oh how I loved that trip !
Thanks so much for the recipes! I’m from Aberdeen and do some of your cooking but often get the recipes from a wee Scottish cook book. It’s a lot more fun & interesting watching and listening to you! I live in Bridlington and miss the Scottish banter! 😊👍
When I lived in London I fell in love with a boy from Aberdeen. I wish I could move to Scotland and just hear nothing but your accent all the time. I'm afraid it's just too cold for me. Many years ago I was at a New Year's Eve party. Billy Connolly was there and I hung out near him just to listen to him.
Thank you for this recipe...will give it a try for sure. I love shortbread, preferably plain like this although I sometimes buy some with chopped pecans in it. Have a Blessed day.
