If you bake the pastry bottom . Do you spoon the mince/ onion mix in as soon as you take it out of the oven or do you let it cool first. Also do you bake the pastry bottom at 200 degrees ?
Hi there 😊 I let the mince cool to room temperature...and yes, bake at 200... but make sure to line your base/bottom with baking paper and weigh down the pastry with uncooked rice/lentils or baking beans to stop it rising 😊👍 10 minutes should be enough.
Hi Thanks for the reply Do you let the prebaked pastry bottom cool before you spoon in the mince or do you use it as soon as you take it out of the oven?
I am from Ontario, Canada. Thank you so much for this recipe. My hubby has always said that he hated meat pies. When I saw this recipe, I just had to try it, because I love meat pies. He had it for his supper and actually liked it. He said that it was not what he was expecting, and that he would eat it again. This is a huge meat pie victory as I have been trying to find a recipe that he would eat for 30 years. Thank you for your wonderful videos and for this recipe that we can both love.
Always a joy to see your videos and lovely, comforting meals. Also, your voice is so warm and welcoming, it feels to all of us as though you are an old friend. Thank you for sharing yourself with us.
I so love seeing pictures of Scotland. I live in the USA, in California and disabled with terminal Cancer. So I will never get to travel to your wonderful country once Covid-19 is over. Thank you for sharing views of your wonderful country. Your recipes are awesome also. So yummy. Saved everyone I have watch so far.
My goodness that mince and onion pie looks fabulous. I love to watch you cook. I love the pictures of Scotland that you put on your videos. Thank you so much. from US.
Hi Cheryl. Made this for tea last night following your recipe. What a beauty !! We ate far too much but enjoyed every mouthful. Thank you so much for sharing.
This was absolutely delightful! Please make more so we can try them at home. I'm English, Welsh, Scotts-Irish, Irish, and Cherokee, and although I live in the states, I am enamored with Scotland and England. Bless you!!!
Thanks for the recipe! I bought frozen puff pastry last week in anticipation of this recipe. Will be making it soon! Been rainy here in Maryland lately. Haven't had much snow this year. Been staying too warm. Ya never know what it's going to be like from year to year. Be blessed.
This looks insanely good! Here in Minnesota it is currently -2f with windchills of -22f and dropping. A nice hot pie like this sounds absolutely fantastic! Thank you for sharing your yummy recipe with us.
I'm definitely going to try this beef pie...your recipes look delicious and simple to make. Love the idea of the puff pastry ! I'm from Québec, Canada, and make a similar dish called "Tourtière", but can't wait to try this dish from Scotland ! Thank you for posting this recipe.
I'm in the US and the cooler fall weather has me wanting to make warm, hearty food. I stumbled across this recipe and gave it go. Oh my goodness! It was delicious! I added carrots and garlic and I will make it again. She was a beauty to look at, too! Thank you!
That looks delicious. Just what I need on these frigid winter evenings here in the USA. Where I live ( about 50 miles east of Buffalo, NY ) it's frigid. We've actually had a weird winter. Usually we're under several feet of snow from November until April. This year we'll get subzero (F) then it goes up into the 30s F Right now it's 29°F with about 10 inches of snow.
I enjoyed seeing this recipe come together and can only imagine how tasty it is at this stage as I haven't tried cooking it yet. I also enjoyed seeing the Isle of Arran photos which reminded me that I used to play a tune on the pipes called 'Arran Hills' which was composed by Scotty Wilson here in Western Australia. I think he cam from Arran. Cheers and keep the tasty recipes on the go.
Love your video and your sweet Scots accent! I first watched it with the sound off and closed captions on, but they made no sense at all, ha ha ! Much more enjoyable to listen than read. Definitely want to try your recipe.
My mums grandad was Scottish but the rest of the family were Cornish. So seeing you call this a round explains why my mum always made pasties in a tin and called them rounders. Love the mixing of influences.
I cheered when you brought out the Hendo's! You don't often see Hendo's outside Yorkshire, so I'm curious how you came to appreciate its joys? As a northerner married to a Scotsman, I'm loving your channel. Hoping to make him some tastes of home and enjoy some pie while I'm at it. Although I'll be channeling my northern roots and adding extra gravy. You Scottish folk just don't use enough!
What an absolutely lovely video. It's the first one I've watched and love the scenery shots. I live in Scotland (NE) and like to see other parts of our beautiful country. And the recipes of course. New subscriber methinks x
This pie looks so tasty!😋 I'm living in the Netherlands, and I'm glad we didn't have any snow so far this winter. Autumn and winter are way to cold and dark for me. Love the sun and some warmth upon my face. So I can't wait until it's spring!
Very similar to the way I make my pies, sometimes I'll do it with a suet topping & no base pastry, serve with (as I'm a Lancashire Lad) mushy peas. Also for extra onion flavor I add onion granules to the meat filling. Great video - Cheers!
Thank you for the cooking demo for mince pie. Another wonderful thing I love about What’s For Tea is your use of alternative products that I am not aware. I am learning so much and having fun.
Thanks Cheryl. Superb, as ever. This will be my next pie. I made your Chicken & Mushroom Pie yesterday - and we are having the surviving part of it for our supper today! Yum. Yum. You are doing fabulous work, and touching a lot of hearts with your generous spirit. Thank you, from Mexico (where they don´t understand pies at all).

Can't wait to make this tasty dish this weekend. I shall have it while sitting on the beach, watching the sun set. Outside of your window is interesting. Rarely do we get sleet in our parts. Pat-South Padre Island, Texas
This looks so good! I have everything but the puff pastry - will see what my store has next week. As in most places, here in the southern part of the U.S., we are running low on so many things. I like the pie as it will serve me several meals! Love the lilt in your voice! I can hear your smiles..
Just found your channel by accident! Love your meal ideas and your recipes look fab - it's difficult sometimes knowing what to cook for a change but you have loads of brilliant options here - keep them coming!
Yummm! My Mom used to make this when I was growing up. She would serve it with a tomato sauce, and a iceberg wedge salad, Sooo yummy ! You can also add some small diced potato cubes to the mix tfs 💗💗💗💗
Hello from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania! Just as cold for the next few days. Can not wait to make this. Thanks for all your recipes. I especially like trying to find the American substitutes for some of your ingredients. Truly wish I could find Gammon here! And your Scottish bacon looks superior to what I cam find in the states. But I guess my ability to buy Golden Onion soup in any grocery store, must make you envious!
Do like a nice mince supper pie and that looked braw! Being a frugal East Coast scottish lad I was brought up to use a handful of porridge oats instead of the flour. I do this whether I'm making plain mince or using it as a filling for a pie. It not only thickens up the gravy, but bulks out the mince making it go further. Adds a lovely texture and nutty taste too. Enjoying your videos, some nice classic Scottish fare showing up and it always puts me in mind for what to plan for my tea in the next few days.

Cold and Chilly is magic.......I have lived in Thailand for 2 decades but when I make a Family visit in Bonny I love it. Your recipes are brill, am trying to catch up.
I'm a Geordie from Newcastle-upon-Tyne who has lived in Canada for over 50 years. My Nana and my Mam both made these mince pies and they're so good! Thank you for the recipe, I've never been able to replicate it exactly from my Mam's brief notes, she's been gone for 40 years and no-one to ask, so I'm very happy to find yours. Enjoyed the canny accent too. 😁 Got a lot more snow than you though. 😉 xxx
Just discovered your channel. It’s such a delight to watch. Am from Glasgow but over in Melbourne now. Really looking forward to cooking some of your recipes. 😀😍
Hello from Manitoba,Canada! Today we are having -30C as a high and with the wind it feels like -42C. Skin will freeze in minutes. We've finally having a regular winter day, it's been quite warm. The minced beef pie looks delicious. I did something similar yesterday but no pastry lol!
Greetings from RSA to the Isle of Arran.i have just discovered ur delicious recipes we love Wholesome comfort food. The first was the steak pies now the mince pie. Interesting that we can use 2 different pastries which I am going to try. Love the way u explain in detail we are also in winter now so definitely going to try
This sounds so good. Thank you for your recipes and also for your videos of your lovely land. I love Scotland and maybe one day I'll be able to visit it.
I wish i was in Scotland. My mom was born in Scotland, Nairn which i think is in the north east. Ive always been so proud of my scottish heritage. We bel9ng to one of two cans, either clan Stewart or clan Hay. I am definitely gonna be making these when i get my new mixer next week...can hardly wait.
Hello from south Texas... doesn't get very cold here or stay cold for Kong, but my son likes those kind of days. I prefer fall weather: bright sunny day, no clouds or humility, bright blue skies and cool temps.
Hi, Timing was perfect for this recipe!! I bought mince and puff pastry as I was planning on finding a recipe on line to make this on the weekend. So glad it's your recipe I'm following.
I wish I could find a good store bought pie/puff pastry crust. I love making my own but I don't really have a choice. I loved your mince recipe so I'll definitely be trying this one.
Hatheg-Kla I prefer home made puff pastry but it’s SO time consuming 🙄 takes a LONG time to get right 😊 so I prefer ready made for convenience! Thanks for watching
Thank you for the recipe and I’m going to give it a try ,as some of the most delicious things that you can eat are often the simplest, but that’s the trouble because we are often told by some TV chef or other about the latest in vogue food from overseas and so we often forget how good ours can be ( best wishes from St Ives in Cornwall )
Cheryl this looks delicious! I do have a request, though. Please, PLEASE could you do a clootie dumpling? Over here in Northern Ireland, we traditionally do dumpling for Hallowe'en, but I'd happily eat it every day of the year....I'm interested to know your 'take' on a traditional classic. Thank you in advance 👍👍👍👍
I was looking dishes for mince meat then wow I found your recipe very interesting & you explain it very well, thanks for sharing I’m your new subscriber can’t wait to watch more of your recipes. 👍👍👍
I'd love to visit Scotland during Winter, but I'd be taking my sister with me and she's just a tiny thing and would freeze (or she'd curl up into a little ball, under a bunch of blankets...she and Jasper would get along famously LOL!) To this recipe, I'd have to add carrots, as you've gotten me quite hooked and my hubby loves mince with carrots - my mom can just pick hers out. 😄 I'm looking forward to seeing the poll whenever you put it out. :)
This looks lovely. My great grandfather was from Scotland. His last name was Faulds. I’m going to make this one night in his memory. Thanks Cheryl for your beautiful video. I’m a new subscriber. Stay healthy and many blessings to you and Mr. T!

Thank you for the recipe, I've never been able to replicate it exactly from my Mam's brief notes, she's been gone for 40 years and no-one to ask, so I'm very happy to find yours. Enjoyed the canny accent too. 😁 Got a lot more snow than you though. 😉 xxx
Your recipes are simple & tasty. Thank you for sharing them.
Just discovered your channel. It’s such a delight to watch. Am from Glasgow but over in Melbourne now. Really looking forward to cooking some of your recipes. 😀😍
John & Adele Robin Oh my goodness! Melbourne? Just the same weather as here then 😂😂😂
Hello, from a fellow wegie.
Lovely comfort food for chilly weather! I live in Florida now but still miss those wintery days.
Pie looks amazing, definitely want to give this a go. Thanks for the recipe X
So you made mince 😂, love from 🏴
Greetings from RSA to the Isle of Arran.i have just discovered ur delicious recipes we love Wholesome comfort food. The first was the steak pies now the mince pie. Interesting that we can use 2 different pastries which I am going to try. Love the way u explain in detail we are also in winter now so definitely going to try
Made this Pie the other evening, it was delicious and so easy to make. Enjoying your channel.
Your right its simple, thanks for the recipe you could use the same basis for a pot pie , as we would say in the states
Oh my! Just the recipe I was looking for. Tonights tea☺
I could listen to you all day, can't wait to make this tomorrow 💕xx
This sounds so good. Thank you for your recipes and also for your videos of your lovely land. I love Scotland and maybe one day I'll be able to visit it.
Oh there's areas of the state's that get scottish winter weather! I moved south two years ago and I do miss quilt weather!
Good comfort food. Better than all those fancy dishes. Thank you for sharing.
Hello from south Texas... doesn't get very cold here or stay cold for Kong, but my son likes those kind of days. I prefer fall weather: bright sunny day, no clouds or humility, bright blue skies and cool temps.
Omg that looks amazing cheryl, definitely have to try that , beautiful food as always xxx
Yes made one of them myself, it was great.
Yes please
I was looking dishes for mince meat then wow I found your recipe very interesting & you explain it very well, thanks for sharing I’m your new subscriber can’t wait to watch more of your recipes. 👍👍👍
Thank you so much 🙂
I'd love to visit Scotland during Winter, but I'd be taking my sister with me and she's just a tiny thing and would freeze (or she'd curl up into a little ball, under a bunch of blankets...she and Jasper would get along famously LOL!) To this recipe, I'd have to add carrots, as you've gotten me quite hooked and my hubby loves mince with carrots - my mom can just pick hers out.
