- The New 2020 Porsche Taycan is finally here and this is what it's like to drive. Here is the first drive review of Porsche's first all electric car - the 720hp+ Taycan Turbo S. The Turbo S’s headline figures stand at 616bhp, with an overboost peak of 750bhp - along with 774lb ft of torque - when launch control is selected. It’ll reach 62mph in 2.8sec, 100mph in 6.3sec and go on to a limited top speed of 162mph.

I think that the Taycan looks better than the Model S...
Ben Nicholson as a huge Tesla fan, I agree
They both look freakin boring. It could have been exciting if porsche had made it look more like the prototype.
Lets see what the new tesla will look like. It is ages old now and entertainment system way superior to this... agree with the quality problems of tesla but sorry porsche, i expected more. Indeed prototype looked a lot more exciting...
Personal opinion (as a Porsche owner) - I think that the Model S looks better (and grown up) than the Taycan.
Model S is just same old boring design, compare to their own models.
This is the first EV where i thought, ‘yes! I want one’
X2. But i'm poor.
Go buy it.
It is really good, but i prefer the honda e which kinda suit me well. Small compact hatchback, look unique and cute, pretty subtle. And most of all they're "honda"
That is so on point.
Same here. Teslas just lack style. They just dont have that legacy.
This is my favorite electric car by far. Also the first electric car i actually want.
Me: I'm going to bed
Mr JWW video: No you aren't
Mathieu L me rn
Precisely 😅
😂👍🏻
@@MrJWW that's the thing with electric cars though. He didn't really feel exited about the accelaration. If you take EV's round a track its just not the same, a missing piece. wonder what the future will hold.
Yawn
The "engine" noise for accelerations is really like the future cars we were promised!
It's fake. Comes through the speakers.
Daniel DelPercio Like your mom.
Daniel DelPercio Actually it isn’t fake, they amplify the real noise the electric motor makes.
Lorenz Müller
“My breast’s aren’t fake, I just had them amplified.”
You mean they were designed like science-fiction writers imagined.
No that ceramic layer is there to stop corroding of the disks because the regeneration of the driveline is preventing you from using the actual brakes regularly. Its not there for longer life because the brakes themselves are used aggressively...
Yep, regenerative braking doesn't use disks; otherwise how could it regain energy if you threw it away as heat?
Beat me to it.
That’s true
Spot on. Really surprised he would drive the car all day and not get a grasp of regen braking... Not too mention all the Porsche info they would have given him
Porsche even claims that 90% of braking in everyday use are done by the recuperation system alone, without even activating the disc brakes. Thus for the first time prescribing a time-dependant brake pad replacement every 6 years. Claiming that an EV regens over it's disc brakes is kind of... "ludicrous".
I’m sorry I got to add again cause it’s very refreshing - the points you make about it’s handling and heritage it’s difference to a model s this is way more insightful than reading stats cut in with slow panning shots
The heritage was obliterate by 20 sec. by a tech company.
@@general65644 with no interior
@@justina9914 and no cammo and interior like the "Turbo"
But it's easy to be blinded with heritage. Then you overhype the product, and that's the same thing you accuse Tesla fans of. I see it often with Audi: most Audis, even S models have uninspiring handling and drive feel (even compared to Model 3 performance). But many people buy them and pretend it's so good because 'quattro has such legacy in races, their cars must handle good'.
@@justina9914 If you would add the price of battery and tech to the price of luxury interior, then no one will want to buy such expensive car from not yet known brand such as Tesla. That's why they originally designed model S with lower quality interior. BTW, go to Tesla shop and take a seat in 2019 Model S before saying it has 'no interior'. It's not on Porsche level, but it's like typical Audi or Lexus. Not bad. Better than Toyota, Ford, Honda and many other mainstream brands.
One of the best specs for sure!!! Really like this green!!!
It's a spaceship from Porsche!!!
James, you live a very beautiful life, having access to all those dream cars us car guys lust after and we envy you for (in a good way!) is one thing, but the way you want us to experience what you experience is simply awesome! We cannot feel the acceleration, the cornering speeds nor the quality of the seats etc., but thank you for taking us in, showing us the best possible way how these dream machines are, and they way you do it being so humble..wow.. thank you! Many other youtubers have a lot to learn from you!
Thank you for watching it’s a pleasure to share with you 👍🏻
I love Porsche.
I hate Electric cars.
I can handle this and glad Porsche showed their muscles
Tall Drink you’re going to have a miserable future then 😂 ⚡️ 🚗 everywhere.
@@stubones Yup, I know we are headed there. But If more companies can follow the Porsche lead I'll be content
always weird to me when people “hate” progress
“Hate” May be a strong word. I’ve made a very comfortable living seeking and achieving progress for my clients. Not a statement against advancement, just missing the sound of the engine. Sorry for the confusion.
Tall Drink the Porsche lead? Don't you mean Tesla? This car wouldn't exist without them...
11:05 I think you mean 350 Kilowatt. Thats 350,000 watts
There were numerous things he said during the review that were either incorrect or made no sense. I guess he is still new to electric cars though, so we shouldn't be too hard on him.
800V system requires less current so less energy expenditure, hmmm
Less heat for sure
But same amount of energy
The use of 800V is to reduce I squared R losses. For the same reason, overhead power lines run at very high voltage yet a small size cable can feed a city.
@@GWAIHIRKV can you explain what you said? I like physics but I am not very good. I am insane at maths tho
Also the "because of course, this doesn't have an engine" 2:51 *facepalm*
Is it weird that I actually like the sound that it makes? It's sounds like futuristic cars from movies
Do you find your self making GT3 Engine noises in your head 😭😭😭 great work as always James
I'm in love with the color. That's the spec to get!
Love the Color!!! So Smart of Porsche to jump in to this!!! Killing it with the Content 👍😃👍
Yeah the color is awesome!
reminds me of my cosmic green Color GTI VW!
Excited to finally see this thing in action, feel like I've been hearing talk about it for longer than the Mission E has even been a thought lol. Video quality was superb, the embargo actually was good because it gave you time to get the quality to MotorTrend level, really gave me a good feel for it. Hope to get more content with this thing in the future.
And thank you for mentioning the build quality its so true with Tesla how even for 80K plus you still feel like a 24K Corolla was better built. Not to mention having such a huge manufacturer behind you is huge in situation where warranties and parts come into play. *Cough TESLA Cough*
this is so amazing! great content as always! love the vids!! For us people that cant affort cars like this, its so amazing that you're able to bring over the emotions and the smiles the car generates! love it!
musk did it! single handedly successfully shifted the industry to electric. this is beyond amazing. this is major historical figure amazing.
He was the first to really make it popular but it was natural gonna happen that other car companies were gonna make their electric cars. To me he was the first to make it into a mainstream thing. He is making it popular but to say he single handedly did it is a bit of a stretch.
@@SMohinder Do you really think all those car makers was willing to change the industry??? They are fine making billions with their friends of the OPEP...
@@0RZ0WEI Willing to change the whole industry? Tf are you guys making such bold claims for lmao. Electric cars aren't something most car companies are even thinking of. Just because the few are making electric car models means their changing from gas? Its literally one car from Porsche and people act like they will only produce electric cars lmao. I'm happy its getting competitive but be real this is 1 step of a 100 till something massive happens. In the grand skeem of things this is small.
I think the Taycan looks fantastic inside and out! The future is definitely electric!
Hmm to me it's just stupid to bring 500kgs of batteries with u everywhere u go and still if u floor it a bit the range is going to be something like 100km...
..And yeah how about handling?
To me the answer would be hydrogen over batteries..
@@HypnOlli Fair enough I understand what you are saying.

Bud Chronic The future is solid state batteries
@@kpsig I think I am right in saying that they have better density that Lithium ion batteries!
I actually like the interior noises it makes on acceleration lol, never thought I'd say that
It’s configurable.
It actually sounds really nice, especially with the two speed transmission! Well done Porsche, well done.
Collect my Tesla Model 3 Performance tomorrow. Super-pleased that Porsche is onboard and hope in a few years to buy their second iteration. Different beasts really (price, level of luxury) and definitely a place for both manufacturers. Each should improve the breed.
Love this car, looks great, even made MrJWW swear!
Just to clarify, there is no physical break contact during regenerative braking and hence no extra wear on the brakes.
Yep i've seen lots make this mistake.

So I’ve got one of these arriving in March next year; I’ve pretty much watched every video review on UA-cam as I am beyond excited to receive my new car. This is the best review I’ve watched. Eloquent, engaging and enjoyable throughout. Kudos sir.
Stopped what I was doing for this... I've been waiting for this review since you teased it.
Everybody comparing it to the model s. The model s got introduced in 2012 and is still relevant when it comes to EVs but the Tesla Roadster 2.0 is the car to compare it to. A 2020 car vs a 2020 car.
My favorite UA-camr reviews the new brilliant Porsche Taycan, what can be better?!
jesus christ I'm in love. honestly think people understimate the looks....they really grow on you...gorgeous car
finally, a proper EV built properly
It's so nice to watch a video from someone who actually understands why a person buys a Porsche.
You can't say "ludicrous" in a Taycan, Elon will send his boys after you
No because the "Turbo" it is slower.
@@general65644 might be slower, but at least it's got better build quality and better handling. Plus I'd like to see you try and throw a Tesla sideways!
(I love Tesla's, but these cars are only comparable on paper, they serve different markets)
@@chirpynsleepy958 if you go to dragtimes channel , you will see a P100D drifting, but the computer onboard ensure that won´t happen, better quality??? Don t think so been inside an Audi E tron and took me a while to figure out some thinks. In a Tesla is almost in a instant.I hate the panamera and cayene with a lost of buttons, been in 2014 Model s and the build quality is pretty good for a tech company and i wasn t expect that. Porsche for me should come with a bang and the specs for me was a meh. A meh 2016 ModelS.
When the Roadters star to role will put The "Turbo" too shame
@@general65644 the Roadster doesn't exist yet. I'm not entirely sure what you meant by some of your comments, but English isn't my best language so that might be my fault. By "build quality" I mean the quality of the materials used to make the interior of the car (leather, metals etc). Porsche service stations are also much more common (due to being owned by VW) than Tesla ones, and Porsche overall I'd a much more financially stable company, meaning that the "turbo" is less likely to depreciate as quickly.
That spaceship sound is PRICELESS!!!
You can even switch it off too. This review is quite poor and he doesn't go over much.
That color 💚💚💚💚
I wish i had the money!
When I first saw this car the jury was well and truly out and not looking favourable! However, after just watching that, I have had my mind changed drastically. It looks great and with a Porsche pedigree behind it, it has panache.. Thanks James
The best electric car right now, great job Porsche 👊🏻
Gab L such as?
@Gab L i can respect your opinion since this isn't a Tesla-Fanboy-Combat comment xD
Did honda e already out yet? That car is really eye catching, i prefer that car for value people could buy while Porsche gonna make you spend quite a buck to grab one of them
It was the propulsion system for the Porsche Type 100 tank, officially known as the VK 30.01, that unnerved many in the Third Reich. Prototypes used two V10 engines as generators to produce electrical current for the two electric motors, each one driving one of the tracks. While the design had its complexities, among its advantages was the full torque delivery from a standstill, allowing the tank to wrench free of obstacles like mud where other designs required a difficult recovery.
Can't believe you didn't say anything about the astounding beauty of Sweden - where I presume this was shot!
digitalscales yeah Skåne, Sweden. I drive my Model 3 Performance on those roads every day. 👍
I guess it’s Norway as Porsche is doing the media event in Norway.
AV no as I said I drive on those roads daily so I recognize them. You can also see in the navigation display a few times the exact name of the roads.
I actually met a white Taycan a week or so ago just outside PGA National Sweden. Probably one of the journalist cars.
AV yes it looks a lot like (my home country) Norway
No its sweden u dumb fellas, theres no yellow markings on the road. And the nav /mcdonalds signs is all in swedish not norwegian.
The SOUND is just,.... WoW
First of all, we all must acknowledge the job Tesla has done when it comes to EV's.
But I have been waiting for someone that really knows how to build cars to release a proper EV, like this one and Audi.
I guess Tesla fanboys will be loyal to their Elon, at least for about fifteen minutes into the future. But now that Porsche has released this one and some competitors are going to agree about some standards when it comes to charging I guess Tesla at one time will disappear.. Not tomorrow, not in a year, but they just cant compete with build quality like the german manufacturers can deliver. Maybe in the US, because they are used to cars that makes rattles and have panel fitments and crappy service, maybe there they can survive.. But at least here in Norway Tesla has a bad rumor when it comes to quality and service, there are huge lots with used Teslas waiting to get served.. So when VAG(Audi, Porsche, VW +++), Mercedes, BMW and other German brands now is releasing their models, I guess the game changes from now on. :)
BTW: I'm not into EV's, I drive an old diesel.. But I've driven P100D in ludicrous mode, and OH MY was that a lot of fun!! But a rollercoaster is fun for about just so long.
Spot on point
Lol, it's twice the price. I'm sure the Roadster will be dope when it comes out.
@@takanara7 and brake down in an instant and burn
Regarding no rattles in premium European brands, I’ve tried telling that to my AMG Mercedes C63s but to no avail. : (
@@MrDjay46 hehe bad luck then..?
I've never had any AMG's, but I'm an Audi-guy and I am not familiar with rattles and bad panel fitment and such deals..
Bad painting and rust tho... thats another story, and maybe Tesla did see to european premiums when they decided to just not care.. :D
Coz' it seems like noone paints car properly any more..
Fantastic review James. Thank you. I'm with you. Out of all the major manufacturers I was looking forward to Porsche the most. A proper sportscar manufacturer taking on the future. And I'm glad they have succeeded with their first take on the electric car. Despite the lack of an ICE which has always been an integral part of the appeal of Porsches, it seems to feel like a proper Porsche and I couldn't be happier about that.
Porsche hits a homerun! thanks for the review!
I love this color! It looks way better than a Tesla, it truly looks like a 911 sedan. Years ago I was totally against all electric automobiles but now they are truly getting better and much more cool!
Naming an electric car a "turbo" has to be the biggest joke in car industry
(insert catchy new name to replace "Turbo" on their electric cars) *BOOST*
@@Majin_Fuu why not just remove that altogether and just call it the taycan s, whats wrong with that?
@@1EnZBosS1 yes, that would also work
Thex it is giving tribute to porsches highest trim level not to the actual engine of the car. When you see turbo badge on a Porsche car, you automatically know it is a top trim level. Real buyers are not concerned about some badge on the rear of the car
Great job at this one. I really liked your commentary. For me this is the the best review of Taycan so far!

Markus_oaa thank you I should have watched the whole thing
The comment about the ceramic coating on the steel rotors doesn't make sense. James said it had to do with the regenerative braking. The thing is its not the brakes that do the regenerative braking. Its the motors that provide the deceleration.
stephen teerling Yes, it actually uses the brakes less due to the regenerative braking. In another video a Porsche representative said that it was to stop the steel brakes rusted no from lack of use and then impacting the braking performance when you actually use the brakes
Back in the day... 'turbo' used to signify a mood, a feel, a trim level...an intent, like the Triumph Acclaim or Suzuki Samurai. Good on Porsche for bringing back some 80s naming conventions haha.
Can't wait for porsche to watering down rs badge term for aggressive body kit. Just like mercedes and bmw done with amg line and m performance kit.
I disagree. It's a new platform which deserves a new naming convention. Turbo doesn't sound right in a full EV. It's the only non-turbo 'turbo' in Porsche's line up.
WHAT A CHANCE !
I saw this car some months ago during its development tests.
It was very impressive !
Nice video as usual Mr JWW
I am so jealous you got to experience that beast of a machine!! I loved this episode and you did an excellent job taking me with you!
correction for 14:28
the regenerative braking should not be the reason for the need of big ceramic brakes. the 2,3tons wieght might be, but the brakes will be used less when using regen, so ceramic brackes might be also for preventing rust since its rarely used for daily driving
Being honest I think Porsche have pulled of a massive creation that has been refined in the past years and this video really shows where the Porsche Taycan shines. Could have gone a bit cheaper but it’s the first electric for Porsche which is a premium manufacturer so I think the price might be right. Anyways awesome video made and waiting for more.💚
9:47 The Taycan has five screens, not four, one more is in the back.
Excellent work, as usual. Porsche should have paid you for that review, it seemed honest while being a great complement to the brand & the model. I like the way you point out that it's so good it lacks excitement unless driven to excessive speed/acceleration, like a lot of high performance cars. Thank God it doesn't have stupid simulated engine sounds over the audio system as you drive.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻 I wish they did pay ha ha but I guess paying and reviewing don’t go well together 😂👍🏻
Awesome car, incredible content as always, what’s not to like 😎
Looks so much better than any Tesla. And the breaking and acceleration sound is so cool. Damn, I wish I had the money.
This video has made me go into my garage and start the GT3RS just to listen to internal combustion!!!
Michael Kastner. Amazing car. But how many minutes where you standing in the garage before you felt dizy and began to cof?
Good god that thing is a monster when accelerating 🏎💨
Thanks for this - great first impressions. I’d love to know your thoughts on the handling of the Taycan vs various Teslas e.g. the Model S. as you say, it’s not about 0-60. It’s a about how well you can chuck it around corners etc
The exterior of the Taycan is beautiful, the interior screens are nice. The rest of the interior..........crickets chirping.
The only EV car review i have ever watched all the way through, checks bank account. Is disappointed.
Incredible review James 👍🏻
Probably the most exciting release this year. Because we start to see what really can be done with EV's now... 20 min charge time is awesome! And we get a car that we can be fairly sure will be of the highest quality.
I was super excited for Tesla a few years ago, but these days... big fat NOPE!
I'd have a KIA Soul EV or Niro EV over them any day. But this Taycan... yum! Me want!
One thing that still will be or could be an issue if you drive far and maybe are in a bit of a rush. You cant be certain right now that you get the high speed charge you want... but that is being worked on and I'm sure in a year or two things will have gotten even better.
I see endless posibility with EV's not just as a car and means of transportation.
Less is more !!
Love it and the green is groovy man !!!
Excellent spec.
He's made a number of mistakes. You hardly ever use the brakes even when braking. The discs are coated so they don't corrode cos you hardly use them. The car comes with a HUD next year.
Surprisingly, it actually makes quite a cool sound.
the fit and finish... plus the colors offered... it's already a winner! i wished i had the money and this would definitely be my first option
daft to call it a Turbo S, they should come up with a new naming scheme for the electric series
Mike, honestly I'm still scratching my head
Its the turbo that really makes this car special.
Hands down the best capture of acceleration on film. I’ve never seen a better capture of an aggressive acceleration. I felt it.
Caterham to Taycan....., what a world we are living in right now.
Insane.
Thanks for keeping the channel on the edge JWW, loving your work.
11:30 assuming that's 350KW as opposed to 350w?
Robbae 350Watt would take a while... 🙈
First time in my life i've even seen a videoclip with an electric car cause i have always said, noway i'm ever gonna like one. Wow was i wrong, this one looks hilariuos in all ways. My biggest surprise tho was the view on the navigation,Vallbyvägen...what,it's my little country Sweden.
Some good point Mr JWW. EV's in terms of quiet luxury vehicles and comfortable daily commuters such as a Toyota Camry makes perfect sense and should be an easy transition..but for performance, exotic and muscle cars..the noise, vibrations and feel is a HUGE part of the experience, and that's where I see EV's will be a very hard pill to swallow.
I would definitely choose this car over a Model S. Such a beautifully designed and engineered car.

AutoCar says the Taycan can only charge at up to 270kWh. So even if those chargers are capable of supplying 350kWh, the batteries' controller will drop the charging rate to 270kWh, which is still quite impressive.
It seems like making exciting videos about electric cars will be a little different for car vloggers. They just don't offer the drama and theater of conventional cars on video. It will be interesting to see how vloggers work around that in the future.
I love the taycan, but I wish Porsche made it more like the concept version.
Impossible for the average consumer to afford. And it would also mean that porsche would need new production lines, and that a greater risk and investment that they probably didn't want to take. Hence the reason concepts are concepts.
Law wouldn’t allow it
I think electric cars will, one day in the not too distant future, become the norm, and it's a bright future with companies like Porsche working on it. Just need the fast charging infrastructure put in place! However, I am thankful I grew up in a period where I got to enjoy some of the greatest internal combustion engines before they disappear forever. Great video as always!
I wanna know the brand of his sunglasses. I want one!
It's a prototype that he is creating himself. In one of the TDF's video he explains that he is trying to launch his own sunglasses brand. It does looks awesome and the best part is that he states that he wants to make it kind of affordable. Don't expect it to cost 100 bucks because he says he is only using top quality materials, especially the lens, but it won't cost 1k either. Let's wait and see.
I heard the reason Porsche coat the steel brake discs with ceramic dust is in order to prevent rust as you use them so little due to the regenerative braking.
Looks so much better in green
I feel the all electric vehicle, this car in particular, is the future of the daily automobile. Comfortable, environmentally friendly and convenient to live with on a daily basis. I think the future of the sports car/super car is somewhere in between. Petrol engines with hybrid electric drivetrains and gear boxes. Both have their place, obviously something has to change to help with CO2 emission's and sitting in traffic for an hour a day with a petrol engine up front quite frankly doesn't make sense when it could be a brick of batteries making zero pollution, on the flip side, when I take a weekend and head to the racetrack for a Saturday with the mates, nothing compares to the rush of a turbo spooling up, hitting a shift just right and hearing that crack and burble of an exhaust.
