Graphing a linear equation by rewriting from standard form to slope intercept form

  • 👉 Learn how to graph linear equations written in standard form. When given a linear equation in standard form, to graph the equation, we first rewrite the linear equation in slope intercept form, (i.e. in the form y = mx + c, where m is the slope and c is the y-intercept). Next we plot the y-intercept and using the slope, we can determine the rise and the run of the required line and then be able to plot the next point from the y-intercept. Finally, we draw a straight line passing through the two plotted points.
Alternatively, we can determine the x-intercept and the y-intercept of the standard form linear equation by subtituting y = 0, then solve for x and substituting x = 0, then solve for y respectively. Recall that the x-intercept is the value of x when y = 0 and the y-intercept is the value of y when x = 0. After obtaining the values of the x-intercept and the y-intercept, we plot the points on the coordinate plane and then draw a line passing through the points.

My teachers were trying to teach this to our class for an hour and 20 minutes and I didn't get a single thing from it, but watching a 5 minute video made me understand this concept immediately.
I have a quiz tomorrow as well, and I'm confident it'll be a breeze. Thanks!

You mention the slope is -3/5 doesn't matter if 3 or 5 are negative as long as they both aren't negative which creates a positive. That makes sense as you have a negative for a slope.
I am no math expert so maybe I am missing something so please fill me in because my understanding of this is.
if the the 3 is positive you are going up 3 places landing on the y axis at +6 not down -3 landing at 0. If the 5 is negative you are going to the left for -5 you get a opposite deeper slope and your coordinates are (-5,6) (x,y)
    Any info much appreciated.

There is an easier way to graph the line than putting it in slope - intercept form.
    Start with standard form: 3x + 5y = 15.
Divide on both sides by the constant term: 3x/15 + 5y/15 = 1.
    Simplify: x/5 + y/3 = 1.
It is now obvious, or it should be, that the x intercept is 5 and the y intercept is 3. Plot these two points and draw your line.
