superchargers are amazing at things like drag racing or any scenario with hard accelerations, turbos just cant keep up with the off the line performance of superchargers.
The only reason is for costs of production and costs of maintenance. Superchargers are relatively inexpensive and easy to build/fix en masse. And they can make incredible power. Turbos are more exotic and superior. But the costs are higher. If the Hellcats had turbos then they'd probably cost about $10K more.
The i8 is more of tech savy well engineered vehicle show casing what bmw can do. Just because it isnt the fastest doesnt mean its overpriced the whole car is a carbon fiber tub. Sure power wise its not worth it but tech wise it was just a taste of the future. Beating a 367hp is pretty easy, not impressive.
