I was in Wellington in December 2014 and took the opportunity to film and photograph the trolleybuses

Wellington goes from being a city with green public transport backwards in development and turns to diesel, incomprehensible.

All is not lost. There will be Battery powered buses introduced in July 2018, with a further 10 planned for introduction in 2020 and a further 12 planned for introduction in 2021.

@@the_alex_ellis_channel6923 Batteries inherently can never as good as direct supply.
Paul Swain justified getting rid of the trolleys claiming high maintenance costs for the overhead catenary. Wait until the bill of replacing the batteries every few years hits the GWRC...

I enjoyed that Alex, good work. Although I rarely used the trolley buses when in Wellington, it is sad to see them go. Nice video :)

Thanks Peter, and glad to see that you spotted some of your Ex. Auckland buses on my Flickr. Hoping to film those at some point.

Wellington trolleys out lasted Auckland’s, I often heard stories from drivers who drove them in the 70’s, the noise an how advanced they were.. but a certain model had a gap around the steering column which gave the driver a cold chill in the winter. Stories of drivers un-hooking the lines and using the battery power to coast the bus to another line and take a short cut back to the depot late at night :) Yes nice to see the ex-Auckland Scania buses, I will miss driving the 2200s :(

I was lucky enough to be down from Masterton on the day b4 the Final Runs,, and went on the bus out to Miramar,, and back later.
Growing up in Dunedin...which had let the rundown but excellent tram system run into the $$ ground,.. I most often used the No 11 up--No 6 down routes from lower Rattray St to the Belleknowes terminus...which was where the former cable cars had crested the hill ,, Highgate,, and done the soo steep descent down into Kaikorai Valley where the powerhouse was.
Any system is going to cost money,, and never make a profit... but why the Dunedin City Council scrapped a system which was quick, quiet, widespread and perfect for the hills,,, i will never understand.

I'm sorry I never got down to Wellington to see them before their last day, but least I have been on them in the past when I have visited family and I'll miss them
Here's hoping they will reappear in a city in New Zealand at some stage.
Unless I am mistaken Wellington has had electric buses since 1949 the only thing is it's going from wire and poles to battery pack.

3:40 and then go to the Bay of Plenty. NZ Bus picked up contracts for the new bus network in the bay of plenty and will start running in 2019.

Hay Alex this was very good. I'm really impressed. Did you no there's one of the only ex stagecoach Volvo b 10ms left. It's down here at Christchurch. It's still in good condition and it's still able to drive.

I can't remember, as I got it from the UA-cam Audio library, but that was on a different computer that I no longer have. Also, for this video I altered the speed and pitch to make it sound the way it does here, so you won't find this exact version anywhere.

what a lame reason * " concerns over upgrading & maintaining the network " ( this would need to be done with ANY form of public transport " * a battery only system ( no overhead wires ) would allow for the routes to be easily change * PS what does " differebt " mean ?

If I were NZ Bus, I would retrofit the design line chassis with a Diesel engine. Sad to see a perfectly good chassis go to waste.

They are trying to fit some or all with a Wrightspeed setup that will be like having a small power plant on board for a electric motor, time will tell if it will work.

Incomprehensibly inexplicable decision by those in charge. Yet not unexpected in the Ireland of the South Pacific. Not enough income to support the lifestyle. So, going down the African and South American path......

We're not entirely backwards. With new Electric buses now on the roads, Wellington now has more electric buses than it ever had Trolleybuses, and they're reaching out into areas the Trolleybuses never could. When bus services are next put out to Tender, only electric buses will be allowed - a 100% zero emissions network. Sometimes you have to take a small step back in order to make a giant leap forward.
