When I was 20 I drove the “big reds” in Wellington! I was the youngest driver ever, I know this because I turned 20 during the 3 weeks of training and that was the minimum age! They were really fun to drive, except in the rain, when the poles seemed to come off more easily and you got all wet going out to retention them and put them back on!

I drove them around 1970-71 which would have put me at much the same age as you...probably a tad older. I was already an experienced driver having gained my heavy truck and semi trailer licences when I was 18 (1968) and this was just another experience I wanted to gain. I used to do what they called weekly changes so was not on a set route, but drove everywhere and anything; trolleys in the morning, diesels in the afternoon or whatever I was assigned to. I knew all the wire and was pretty quick across town when it was needed.
I enjoyed it while there, but went back on trucks and moved to Australia in 1972.

I can't get over how quiet they are! Diesel buses really are a regression.

Wellington 82 front destination sign is wrong. Lyall Bay route 3 always travelled through the cbd on the Green Inner Route, not the Red Outer Route as shown.

Alan Sklenar many. Bradford Leicester Manchester Sheffield Huddersfield Cardiff. Even some towns had them. Very popular but in decline. I am only 20 but I am a massive fan of these and have been interested in them my whole life

Down south, Bournemouth, Reading, Portsmouth, Hastings and probably Brighton. Further North, Glasgow, Newcastle and Gateshead. Walsall and Wolverhampton somewhere in the middle.
