I find the Living Ship to be really inferior in stats even with upgrades (unless I'm missing some which I don't think I am). It just doesn't seem to be nearly as strong as other ships in the game. The one trick of turning it into a 'God-tier' ship by switching the innards to some glitched out, overclocked interceptor modules is very unsatisfying as you can only use it in Creative mode. Is there a way of making a Living Ship even stronger than the mild increase upgrades provide?
Living ships have a few major advantages, first off they are very high base quality, they have problems with the ability to get upgrades of any kind, you will be spending hours in game trying to get even minimal upgrades. Some of the upgrades are so hard to find that I have only encountered three copies of them, too hope that I would get the best versions of them, I had to use a trick to make the upgrades the best possible. You need to arrange the upgrades in a special order for all ships and they are only consistently out matched by the sentinel ships. The rewards ships from Expedition and other things are only slightly better than average.
I'm told the trick is that the upgrades themselves are upgradable once installed, but given that they seem to cap at S rank stats, and everything else can get a bit higher then S eventually, So hows this for an idea? An expedition about a lost living ship program, done in secret, in some far flung high number galaxy. The rewards are all items for living ships and living freighters, tying the two together in some way. With the final reward being a work station you can build, put living ship upgrades into, that turns them into X rank experimentals, that eventually ends up in the quicksilver shop the way the liquidator bits did. Maybe we could also get another weapon type while I'm dreaming.
@ICountFrom0 What I'm about to say might sound strange or gross even but they could have a missile launcher on the living ships if they wanted. Right now the living ships have been restricted to a Bio laser system but multiple things that would make living ships better exist in real life to a certain extent or could easily be imagined as unique in living ships. For example a cloak, a kind of chaff/ flair system, and a kind of missile system or swarm micro drones. The missiles or swarm micro drones could look something like the zerg drop pods in starcraft or tyrinidd drop pods from Warhammer. Both of those are loosely based on sperm, then for the micro drones those also exist in real life. Many starfish and starfish related animals have the ability to release small swimming, biting, sometimes stinging things when under attack. As for the cloak octopus, squid, cuttlefish all have the ability to actually change their colors and skin texture to become nearly invisible to most things. There are also jellyfish that can produce a cloud of stinging cells. The last thing I could see the living ships having is a disabling ability, slime tentacles that can shoot out to grab something. These things said you can cause massive amounts of damage through ramming in any ship but living ships have a tendency to have a separation between their damage taken hit box and impact damage dealing impact damage. In other words the hit box that you take damage from has a tendency to be much smaller than the actual ship size and it will damage things you hit more than other ships this way but you will also probably be taking massive damage yourself.
Yup, plenty of options. So a second living ship expedition where we go into them might be cool. Start us on a planet with a damaged living ship, end of it's life...
