Gym leader Matt? I love your videos man, been on a bit of a break from UA-cam but now that I’m back expect random comments from me binging all your stuff again
As a kid, I caught this thing because the guide I read said that Chansey had the most potential of any pokemon in the game.. " A Well-rounded Tank and special attacker with it's own healing utility " - Some Pokemon guide from 1999
@Cameron L Light Screen Chansey is a thing. It's quite good at frustrating the hell out of Mewtwo. It doesn't hit back and will fold to multiple Psychic Special drops, but when played well it can bleed PP like almost nothing else. (TobyBro is generally more threatening but crumples to Thunderbolt.)
Wow. At first I was thinking “What are you doing, Scott, Chansey is so underleveled!” (especially at Blaine’s gym). But then this cute pink egg continued steamrolling enemies with relative ease, and I was flabbergasted. Chansey is truly awesome.
Ah the only double mono-type in the game, Venomoth. It has triple the legs of most fighting types so low kick against Chansey is actually 12x effective.
"...and this took three hours and fifty-one seconds." Scott. You are a such a gem. 💎 Your stat overlays and comprehensive game info in your videos are why you deserve more subs.
I didn't have a lot of friends growing up and I remmeber I caught a Chansey with no real issue, wasn't until YEARS later I found out how difficult this pokemon is to catch, and no one believed that I caught it, let alone so easily! 😂
Man, I've got a crazy story for the last time I was playing Blue. I was in the Safari trying to get a Rhyhorn, and a Chansey appears during my first visit. I catch it in the first ball. I've genuinely had more tame reactions to finding shinies than easily capturing that Chansey that I wasn't even looking for. The kicker is that Rhyhorn was an absolute butt to catch and took me several trips.
Hey Scott have you considered using seismic toss against misty by doing the extra battle along the path to Bill's house. At Chanseys level Staryu would be a 2 hit and starmie would be a 3 hit ko. I think it would eliminate the chance of almost losing while waiting for bide.
@@GymLeaderMatt1987 all of you have a lot more experience than I do when it comes to these games but if it helps then that's great. Big fan of your content as well so keep it up and thanks for the reply.
@@jeffreyplumb4226 Don't say that! There have been countless time someone in chat or a random comment just made so much sense and I implemented it for great success. An example was in the Poliwrath stream I did a couple of weeks ago. I thought I had this thing optimized fully and someone named Issac just tossed out a suggestion and it alleviated a problem I was having and made the run better.
Lol dual type fighting. Man, I love your videos! I've been playing (casually) pokemon since a few months after release in 1997 (was in primary(elementary) school) - we played Red on our school PCs (80486's mostly) using no$gmb emulator and an incredibly badly translated ROM that was mostly Japanese with part French and English, which we smuggled into school on a 1.44mb dual side 3.5" Floppy disk. The fact that RBGY is being played in 2022 just blows my mind in a fantastic way. I remember playing Yellow for the first time on an actual GBC (a friend's, since my family were a SEGA family) a couple years later... The sounds of Pikachu and the different sprites made it feel like a totally new game, and obviously the exclusives.. Oh man, what a trip down memory lane! Love your content, mate! Shoutout from New Zealand!
So I’ve been trying to finish the game in the fastest time possible using a 1989 Gameboy and Pokemon Red (I have Blue and Yellow too). I play on the bus on the way to work and university. I take all the Pokemon i finish the league with and transfer them to Pokemon Stadium, then start again. By best is 15 hours game time. Still a bit to go, it’s more for leisure then anything competitive. Seeing the fun you and others, like VanMan and JRose have was the inspiration to get me started. Love your content, production value is really great and keeps getting better.
Scott the editing in these videos is awesome. The smooth transitions and just leaking through trainer battles is always satisfying. I also noticed that you were using B-roll footage when fighting Misty and was like is this the same try? Then you talked about it vs Erika. Nice
I think to go for the best time with Chansey, the best move set you should have by the end while under your rules is Minimize, Softboiled, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam. After you finish Koga, you really don't need Psychic anymore (unless you want to fish for Special drops on someone like Blaine). Bolt Beam already gives perfect coverage in RBY, and this move set has everything necessary; it has a means to badge boost, reliable recovery, and perfect coverage. Maybe try working with this move set to take Chansey's time down.
I have a particularly fond memory of Chansey. My brother had been trying to capture one in Leaf Green for hours on end, and had no luck, so I decided I'd take a crack at it, see if I would have better luck. A few failed attempts later, I encountered another Chansey. Threw some bait at it to decrease the chances of it running on me, threw five or six Safari Balls, didn't catch it. It finished eating, and was now back to watching me carefully. How it didn't run away by this point, I'm really not sure, but I figure it was probably going to run away very soon, and didn't want to risk throwing another bait at it. So, just as a joke, I say, "Stay in the ball, Chansey. I give you vodka." and chuck another Safari Ball, expecting it not to work. Shakes once... shakes twice... shakes three times... "There's no way..." Gorcha! Chansey was caught! Laughed about that for a good minute or so. A little later on, my brother decided to reset his game and play through it again. Before he did so, I went into the game, took that very same Chansey out, nicknamed her "Vodka", and traded her over to one of my games. And that's the story of how a Chansey became my in-game drinking buddy. XD
Haven't finished watching the video but i just had to congratulate you on the display of stats, move power, etc it's superb, good job man! you can see the glitches and how much difference stab makes, very educational... kudos on for using bide, it might not be great but if there ever was a pokemon that could effectively use it it's chansey, you could even make a "bide only attacking move" with rest/soft boiled and maybe defensecurl/minimise/reflect though it would kinda be counterproductive since you want to take damage.
I really don't mind evasion in these tests. especially since as per your own rules, it's a natural ability of Chansey. and now im thinking about how key body slam often is when it's via TM as well as some other moves.
Despite me loving to use chansey way back in pokemon red, i could have sworn she learned soft boiled naturally. My memory must have muddled it with future generations. I also remember thinking soft boiled tm is stupid, considering she (and mew) were the only ones that could use it. Also, love you used some of the bide strategy with Chansey! It can be fun and satisfying! Doing it too early though can be tough though, i utilized minimize/substitutes and rest/softboiled depending whats needed. Seismic toss being her whatever attack. Edit: Also, my chansey was part of a team, not solo, so different move set up, haha!
Some things that came to mind in terms of potential optimization after watching: going against the Jolteon team instead of Flareon to avoid paralysis early into the fights (Flareon can also threaten you with physical attacks), taking out rival 2 before Misty and getting Seismic Toss to use instead of Bide for the early water types as well as grass types until you get to Celadon for Ice Beam, and finally something that might be unusual; Body Slam for Sabrina. If you can't take out her psychic types quickly with special moves, maybe it'd be enough to bring her pokemon into range of a special move with a 30% paralysis chance on an earlier turn.
Mah-Dry-Bread finally got well enough to upload his own long-coming Chansey run. I'd normally never talk about other Pokétubers, but he's been bedridden for months, so l'd love to see that video take off.
Hey there, Scott! Thanks again for the great content and all the work you put into creating it! You're amongst my favourite YTers at this point haha btw, I wanted to again suggest that you give the original japanese versions a try(R/G, B Y and maybe gen2 too?); maybe in a comparison video with the international releases or however you see fit! The og versions are very nostalgic to me and I'd love seeing a comparison or just a playthrough the way you do, with your rules, metrics and etc. All the best! Cheers!
Chansey is an s tier pokemon in competitive, it's high special stat was giving it a nice edge, even though it can't really use stab effectively, it's still overall an interesting pokemon to do a solo run with. I remember trying to catch it as a kid and I have always failed to do that, because it was always fled away after one turn. But the first one that I got was in gen 2 for the battle tower.😁 It was nice to watch back to back how minimize was impacting this run's results. Even though whenever you're using evesion strats it's always like a coin flip, but if you can set it up, with bulky pokemon like chansey, you'd get one of the most useful badge boosts, and that kind of impacted the first run in a sense. 🤔 Anyways, I'm glad to have onter awesome video tomorrow, for a whole month. So thanks for working hard for us. 😁
It looks like Machamp's Submission could actually one shot. It only took one of the strongest physical attackers getting a stab Super Effective move against Chansey to find a One Shot xD
Wow! This was a great run! I thought Chansey would do better the second play through actually but 1 minute isn’t too bad at all for it not to utilize badge boosts. Very nice job Scott!
Honestly, Bide seems like it's the best way to beat Misty, or at least a pretty good one. I feel like you got thrown off it because it's a meme move, but you got a pretty bad streak of luck with it (double tackle crits on the startup turn) and still ended up winning. And certainly with more levels it would probably be faster and more reliable too. And better than like 5-shotting with Mega Punch.
Considering that it says growl is done in a cute way it makes sense that chansey can learn it(it's unspecified what the growl is like, just that it causes attack down, till gen 3)
I can see Chansey getting crit Stomped by Blaine's Rapidash over and over. Other than that, should.. *in theory* ... be relatively painless was the moveset gets special
I dunno which is funnier, chansey's rock bottom attack, or the fact it probably does more damage to brock's pokemon than pokemon in other challenges thanks to double slap lol
I hope noone is being overly critical about you going back to Chansey. You've changed so many little things on how you played. I think even in the last year you might've upgrade from 3x to 4x speed like even that minor of a detail can be dramatic. That's considered a minor aspect, a major aspect I found going back to that video quickly before this that already justifies the re-run? The fact that you beat the game and that was it! Every Yellow video now you've done with an eye towards bettering time, raising consistency, lowering resets on a 2nd run. That old video by comparison was happy to beat the game (no offense old Scotty). I think the fact a user will be able to come into your channel, see you have a set for Yellow, and can confidently know that those pokemon are treated more as less as fair as you could do is outstanding. I appreciate it now, it makes rewatches easier! Sorry to blab on, I just figured you needed to know one viewer was in your corner on the topic ^_^
Honestly, almost no one has complained about the re-do videos. I think as long as I do them with a long enough distance ffrom the initial video and that I can show sigfnicantly different results that they are okay. They perform just as well, if not better with the algorithm as well.
Chansey is so cuuute! I love it’s little frills on the sides of its head egg body! Reminds me of an axolotl! Always had trouble catching one in the Safari Zone lol
Me too! I think it would have been better if it were Safari Zone exclusive! I much would have preferred Tauros or Kangaskhan being in Cerulean Cave instead; It would have made them easier to catch, and made Chansey stay super rare
You have painful memories of trying to catch chansey in the safari zone, reminds me of an old werster video were he caught both Tauros and Chansey first try, while the pokemon he was really looking for was nidoran, he had problems with the easy ones.
Also, using Sing against Brock would be hell because he's got the 5 full heals for each Pokémon. With 55% accuracy, you would likely run out of pp (15) beforehand.
liking and commenting before watching the whole video because this pokemon is great good memories of using my blissey in double battles against my friends
I've only ever seen one Chansey in the Safari Zone in any of my playthroughs, and it ran away the first turn after I was kind enough to try and feed it. It was then that I learned the dual lies of BAIT and ROCK, and the only truth was BALL.
I think you could probably get its time down to anything from 58minuts to one hour exactly if you combined badge boosting with Minimize, the use of all your rare candies at Giovanni Gym battle, and getting in a tiny bit of extra training on all the trainers in Erika's gym with Ice Beam.
14:15 "was it a smart play?" Yes, it was. Since Chansey have low defense and high HP, she can take high absolute damage that is actually low relative to her HP. That is perfect for Bide strats. It only was bad because you got bad luck
hey scott, awesome videos . keep it up. :3 heres my fun quiz with you and your fiance. Which are you in the pokemon world? 1. gymleader? 2. trainer? 3. criminal? 4. pokemon? 5 scientist? 1. if you become a gym leader or an E4; what is your gym type? What will your 1 ace MAIN pokemon be and its 4 moves? What is your favorite region to travel to? (depending on the region you picked) Pick a gym leader or an Elite 4, to do battle and replace them? What's your favorite badge? 2. What is your home region to start with? What's your starter pokemon depending on that region? In all gens, what is your 6 dream team, you like to travel with? Would you travel alone or with anyone else in pokemon world? Of the 6 dream team, you chose; what's your mascot pokemon you would travel with? (example like Ash's pikachu) 3. Which evil organization will you side with and what's your grunt pokemon partner be? Which region and city/town will you take over? Which Legendary will you capture? 4. Which pokemon are you? which region are you born in? Which trainer do you want to be with? and what ball are you in? And what is your favorite food to eat? 5. What kind of outfit will you be wearing? What do you research? Is your lab a hidden place or public ? If you get to create your own Pokémon; what will it be ? What stats are you focusing on? and what 3 starters(fire, water and grass) will you give to new trainers?
when your rival never stood of a chansey lol. anyways very nice video. and I think I remember did suggest kelecon. I remember it is possible because someone did a video of it but anyways it be nice to see u do it lol xd
I think you should have considered buying iron. The lower a stat is the greater percentage difference in damage you get from adding 1 point to that stat. Chaney's defense is so low that it makes a big difference to max out defense stat experience.
Hi Scott! Man this channel got me hooked on nostalgia and your struggles perhaps I have one thought/suggestion to share, you keep saying how broken double team is but we never or barely see. Perhaps we can have a playthrough with double team for each Pokémon for comparison? I mean you can start with the normal playthroughs and at the end do ones with double team. Sometimes its really good to see a struggling Pokémon breeze through looking at Arcanine >.
I never caught a Chansey until Pearl due to the Safari Zone being annoying. It was my carry, due to Rare Candying in to Lv 100 with my Action Replay. Ended up trading her on the GTS for Dialga after I beat the game. At least in Gen 1 Chansey can do some good Special damage, she has 0 offensive presence after that.
Oooo! This ought to be good! I'm gonna predict a fairly smooth run... After Brock, that's gonna suck, but that amazing movepool and high Special means even Agatha's Gengar shouldnt be an issue if you can hang onto Psychic's TM for long enough. Oh and Sabrina's and the Rival's Alakazam are gonna be a problem. Perhaps Tri-Attack? Despite Chansey's pathetic attack stat it is still an 85BP attack that does get STAB... And Alakazam's physical bulk is pretty weak. Or maybe Mimic Slash from the Champion's Sandslash? With Chansey's speed Slash has 78% chance to crit... And gets STAB to boot.... Plus it wont be neutered if the Alakazam sets up Reflect...
Damn, Chansey is such a weird pokemon. It was fun in the anime but a nightmare to catch in the game. However it's stats should make it easy to beat the game with, big special and health should make it consistent at least.
You said you would do a bunch of challenges this month and I cant help but wonder if a Dewgong run is on that list. Its pre evolution did really badly, but its evolution might just give you a run for your money. As always, Im looking forward to your videos. Have a great time!
Double Slap is just an American name. It hits more than twice because it's called Round Trip Slap in it's original language.

I would consider this thing cute if I don't play competitive
Ahh, you too have had a salad tossed by Chansey. The best
Seeing Chansey gain 7 HP per level is absurd ngl
Blissey after hp ev training is wild
The pink blob be back at it again, thanks for the vid Scott
Scott: Chansey looks like it can roll.
Me: * Pokémon Snap memories intensify *
I love how Shawn and Sarina get a shout-out now in the naming menu. I think that Denis should get a shout-out on the rival menu.
I always thought it was weird that you needed to teach Softboiled with a TM. These days tho, it's kind of like a dlc thing and not so strange.
Two videos from Scott in a week is the Christmas gift that keeps on giving.
Chansey is so cuuute! I love it’s little frills on the sides of its head egg body! Reminds me of an axolotl! Always had trouble catching one in the Safari Zone lol
It felt like a Legendary, or even rarer in the Safari zone. I wish it didn’t appear in Cerulean cave…
Me too! I think it would have been better if it were Safari Zone exclusive! I much would have preferred Tauros or Kangaskhan being in Cerulean Cave instead; It would have made them easier to catch, and made Chansey stay super rare
"The legend of chansilla"
With this finger!
It was a close call, but you managed to pound the lass in Viridian forest into submission
Yes officer, this comment right here
I have to admit.. I never used Chancy as a kid because of looks. It took almost 15 years to return and realize how the Special made it OP lol
You have painful memories of trying to catch chansey in the safari zone, reminds me of an old werster video were he caught both Tauros and Chansey first try, while the pokemon he was really looking for was nidoran, he had problems with the easy ones.
46:32 Butthead: "*laughs* Check it out, Beavis. His Chansey has 420 HP."
Beavis: "*laughs* Blaze it *laughs* with FIRE! FIRE! *laughs*"
The Pokémon World needs Beavis and Butt-Head, their misadventures would be joyous. 🤣
I made a friend quit Pokemon Stadium when my Chansey muscled through five of his pokemon and then used rest when the last one came out 🎨
I am such a fan of bide strats, so glad I got to see them
With all those freezes, I'd agree that Chansey is indeed a lucky Pokémon.
You were teaching Softboiled to make _eggcellent_ content for us~
Also, using Sing against Brock would be hell because he's got the 5 full heals for each Pokémon. With 55% accuracy, you would likely run out of pp (15) beforehand.
Calling it Bruno is going to offer a challenge for this one
EDIT: I very underestimated chancey based on its stats
B-Roll footage for the Gym Leader intros genius
liking and commenting before watching the whole video because this pokemon is great good memories of using my blissey in double battles against my friends
The fact that its base attack is so poor means Nurse Joy's Chansey is an abnormality. Her Chansey was JACKED.
I've only ever seen one Chansey in the Safari Zone in any of my playthroughs, and it ran away the first turn after I was kind enough to try and feed it. It was then that I learned the dual lies of BAIT and ROCK, and the only truth was BALL.
Slap slap slap, clap clap clap! That’s the dance Chansey does in the beginning of the playthrough.
I love the music you play for Bruno 🤣
I love seeing the enemy's stat breakdown in the top right! Nice addition. Do you worry that it's getting too cluttered for the non nerds?
Pokiman is all about math.
@@Techandrecharge Technically pokemon's all about rng. Ther's no luck involved.
The best part of this video was defeating Misty with Bide. What an epic victory.
I think you could probably get its time down to anything from 58minuts to one hour exactly if you combined badge boosting with Minimize, the use of all your rare candies at Giovanni Gym battle, and getting in a tiny bit of extra training on all the trainers in Erika's gym with Ice Beam.
14:15 "was it a smart play?"
Yes, it was. Since Chansey have low defense and high HP, she can take high absolute damage that is actually low relative to her HP. That is perfect for Bide strats. It only was bad because you got bad luck
"All of the best elemental moves. Except for Surf"
Flamethrower: *am I a joke to you?*
“If you were not watching the video just listening in the back…” Lmaooo I felt called out 😂
Thats the most meaningfull freezes i have seen in a single run.
Dodging that fighting venomoth was done beautifully gj
Lol not getting seduced by sing. That's how you win
hey scott, awesome videos . keep it up. :3
heres my fun quiz with you and your fiance.
(example like Ash's pikachu)
I actually really wanted to see a Chansey run. Thanks, Jirachi.
Welcome :)
Chansy freezing everything in gen 1 must’ve been the inspection for serene grace
You struggled at the beginning, fortunately nurse joey was there to replenish the pp haha 🤣
Imagine irl jinx slapping the f out of chansy with double slap kinda funny
I'd pay to see that Donkey show
That battle with Brock was crazyyyyyy I would have given up long before that point
I'm so proud of you for saying no to sing
Pretty sure Hitmonlee's High Jump Kick is to be feared lol.
I think you should have considered buying iron. The lower a stat is the greater percentage difference in damage you get from adding 1 point to that stat. Chaney's defense is so low that it makes a big difference to max out defense stat experience.
Chansey is known as the "Lucky" pokemon, of course it gave you all those freezes, it had serene grace before it even became a thing XD
Hi Scott!
Man this channel got me hooked on nostalgia and your struggles perhaps
I have one thought/suggestion to share, you keep saying how broken double team is but we never or barely see. Perhaps we can have a playthrough with double team for each Pokémon for comparison?
I mean you can start with the normal playthroughs and at the end do ones with double team. Sometimes its really good to see a struggling Pokémon breeze through looking at Arcanine >.
Yeah, this one was a completely different story! I needed some easy runs after the slog that was the fire-types.
Brilliant video as always. Just a quick note though, the Lapras can't paralyse as Chansey is normal type
Very good video. Loved the defeat of Misty with Bide.
One advantage Normal types usually have is a diverse move pool.
Very true, the quintessence of jack of all trades master of none.
Unless they are Dark/Normal types, then they are uncomfortably offensive and probably lack variety. This also counts for Obstagoon
12:39 - when your crush unexpectedly approaches you at a party and you don't know what to say or how to react.
Plus it wont be neutered if the Alakazam sets up Reflect...
seeing chansey getting all those freezes gives me flashbacks to competitive rby
Damn, Chansey is such a weird pokemon. It was fun in the anime but a nightmare to catch in the game.
However it's stats should make it easy to beat the game with, big special and health should make it consistent at least.
You said you would do a bunch of challenges this month and I cant help but wonder if a Dewgong run is on that list. Its pre evolution did really badly, but its evolution might just give you a run for your money. As always, Im looking forward to your videos. Have a great time!
Dewgong in 2023
