And he did it so nonchalantly without missing a beat, almost as if he was mentioning any random pokemon's type. I'm kind of worried that someone has kidnapped the real Scott 😅
@@theclownsystem9429 welcome to the channel 🥰 When he was a kid, Scott never knew what venemoth's actually typing was, so this has become the longest running joke on the channel 😁
This month has been really stressful and rough for me. Your videos have been a daily reset for me and they've really helped me get through each day with a good mindset. Thank you for what you do Scott!
Around the S.S. Anne in the first run, I was thinking of the early Stomp strat, nice to see that panned out. Also, it's always interesting to see how just a few carbos can tip the balance in key fights-- the dragonite outspeed is a big coup for the eggbush!
I've recently become interested in Gen 1 Pokemon due to the different design philosophy being used from the other games in the series and that comment about the training of psychic types feels very in line with what I'm learning about these games. Originally, types had positives and negatives outside of their type matchups like how rock is technically the strongest physically offensive type, but it only has one move (I'm not counting rock throw) and the move only has decent power and no effects.
Rock is also designed to be the early game powerhouse of rby! It resists all early game types, it is the type of the first boss and the type of a monster you get early: geodude (80 base attack!). It's balanced by its nuke early stab move having AWFUL accuracy and all rock types having two common (for mid game) double weaknesses and very low special. A type balanced on game progression, something that was never the case in any other gen, definitely interesting!
As you say Scott, hypnosis is a valuable tool to deal with road blocks for mons. Which I think is why it’s important to identify the battles or moments where it’s not necessary. As much as I love the videos watching you try to put a raichu with 25% left to sleep was painful
All my favorites caused some real consternation! Sandy, Goldeen Trainer, and Sandslash showing again why its a terrific ace for the Champion's team. And the cherry on top was Professor Oak's (offscreen...) rampage against Exeggutor, until you came up with a legitimately creative tactic to work your way through it. Fine work!
Gen 1 games were inspired by JRPGs. Level up movesets were supposed to be bland, Normal-type and physical move focused, with TMs being used to "unlock" greater power and "upgrade" your Pokemon. The fact that the Pokemon often only learn special moves through a TM upgrade was intentional.
@@AnyThingWorxwell they didn't take into account pokemon learning moves at levels that they're not even available in. They didn't foresee people in 20 years using emulators to edit their starter. I think we can give them a break
Most of the Slow growth rate pokémon, Mewtwo excepting, were always intended to be your core battling team and the recipients of TMs. Just look at Oak's teams. Tauros, Exeggutor, Gyarados, and Arcanine. All slow growth rate, all kinda bad without TMs.
@@MichaelSotoCE That's fine, for Pokemon such as Jynx, Electabuzz, Magmar, Seel, Shellder, Staryu, etc. given that they're mid-late game Pokemon. What doesn't make sense is Pokemon such as Pidgey, Scyther, Pinsir, Growlithe. etc. having painful movesets that makes using them borderline unusable.
That final battle in the second run was excruciating. You had such a perfect run right up until Blue. The sandslash always find a way to screw around with you 🤣
I wanna see a mini series of super strong pokemon that get held back by their Brock split if they get access to 1 of their later moves. It would be cool to see what could have been if they didn't get walled by their early game move pool.
I don't agree with this sentiment tbh. Earlygame is part of the game just as much as lategame. Brock splits are one of the very few things that possibly leas to unpredictable results, whitout it you can figure out tier placements in 2 minutes. Now if i was Scott i'd probably just startscum till i get a the RNG to beat Brock at the lowest possible level(hell, i'd probably startscum up to misty or even Surge if i can do so in 15-20 minutes, but i play old CRPG, startscumming is second nature to me lol), but it is clear that startscumming is not considered a valid strategy for his ruleset.
Tbh, a lot of Gen 1 OU mons are kinda bad for solo playthroughs since they spend like 20 levels using a Normal type move. It's especially bad for the stone Evos though, since they barely even GET moves.
A couple of things I was thinking about in regards to the second run as I was watching it. The first is, I imagine you should be able to do blackout grinding on the Jr. Trainer in brock's gym. This should save some time because the Diglett gives a really good amount of experience points, and its a strategy that has gotten used elsewhere. The second thing is that I don't think Mega Drain as a move has much usefulness past Giovanni, and I don't really think its useful even there. It's the kind of move that feels like a bit of a trap because Exeggutor's Psychic is just so powerful that it's going to out-damage Mega Drain a huge portion of the time. It's a moveslot that could be taken up by other moves, such as Rest or Double-Edge. I think getting Stomp early is a really correct optimization though, it's a great call. Barrage is just really bad as a move lol.
Agreed. Psychic is still better than Mega Drain since eve against things like Cloister and Sandslash, both moves are 2 hits in the Champion fight. Unless there's a problem with PP management, it's probably best to just run Psychic. Maybe put together a set like Psychic, Substitute, Rest, Mimic? Double Edge is a contender, but I do think the gap between Atk and Sp. in this case is pretty notable, and the versatility of stealing moves like EQ or Ice Beam makes Mimic the better option for offense in my eyes. If a physical move is needed, I wonder if Hyper Beam would work, since the recharge is removed if you land a KO, and the extreme base power might make up for middling Atk.
Chansey having access to the move egg bomb is just like Hitmonchan having access to the elemental punches that should just be for jinx, Magmar and electabuzz
Supporting the algorithm, but I want to note that I paused the other game I was playing when I heard the running gag and thought to myself, "what in the serendipity just happened here?"
Kind of embarrassing that with all his knowledge of these games, Scott got Venomoth's type wrong. Sheesh, Veno is supposed to be the channel mascot - huge blunder
When you have some spare time, a romhack with a Grass-type (but otherwise untouched) Barrage (or maybe just Bullet Seed) on Exeggutor would be really interesting to see
Can you do an egg move run of eggexutor where it has its egg moves from gen 2 in gen 1 to see how fast it would be with a decent move set? Thanks Scott again for everything
I am pleasantly surprised at how well Exeggutor did. With this, 7 of the 13 Pokémon currently ranked OU in RBY are on the tier list: Slowbro, Gengar, Starmie, Jynx, Exeggutor, Jolteon, and Chansey. The 6 that remain are Tauros, Snorlax, Alakazam, Rhydon, Zapdos, and Cloyster. Of those, I'm pretty sure Zapdos and Rhydon are the only ones you've never used in Yellow. Also, if we add in the UUBL mons, we get Lapras and our reigning champion Victreebel. ETA: Victreebel is not actually UUBL, it is currently UU proper, but it does have history in OU. The second UUBL Pokémon is actually another top tier solo runner, Hypno. (end edit) I'm really curious to see how the traits that make these Pokémon as good as they are in standard competitive play translate over to solo runs. Exeggutor is an interesting case, as in a solo run it loses access to two of its most defining utility moves, Sleep Powder and Explosion, while its main weaknesses as a solo run Pokémon, its terrible level-up learnset and its Slow growth rate, aren't really relevant in competitive. I'm really curious to see Rhydon, since its main role as a physical tank that also stifles Electric types is much more valuable in the context of a full team. Those traits will be helpful in a solo run for sure, but without teammates to back it up against powerful Special attackers, especially Water, Grass, and Ice types, its weaknesses will be quite limiting. Lorelei's team, Lance's Gyarados, and the rival's Cloyster especially comes to mind in this regard. Plus, like Exeggutor, it has the Slow growth rate and a lackluster level-up set.
I always liked Exeggutor, but honestly, what an awful initial move pool, a complete injustice! Very difficult start indeed, if they just gave it a grass move in the beginning... At least confusion, to ease the beginning for Exeggutor. Frankly, it sure is a s-tier pokemon but it was not possible to make that possible! How disappointing. But anyway, you did the best possible with this guy, didn't you Scott? Good job!
In tandem with finish levels, could the finish experience be added? The growth rates muddy the interpretation of levels, and I think it would be interesting to see how much experience the 'mon need to accrue for their victories.
Not much of a versus. Beedrill is going to be way worse. You have swords dance but no move to click, your only possible moveset is swords twineedle giga drain hyper beam
It's not just that it is a stone evolution, the Exeggcute line just doesn't get many moves in Gen 1, because it's a Safari Zone pokemon. If you don't evolve it, then instead of getting Stomp it gets Leech Seed, Stun Spore, and Poison Powder. Granted, it can learn Toxic, so you can take advantage of the Leech Seed/Toxic glitch if you want, but that's not going to be enough for a solo challenge, and the line doesn't have the HP or defenses to Toxic Stall effectively, even with the healing from Leech Seed.
If anyone's wondering how the Flareon fight is easier than the Jolteon fight, then here's the explanation: In the Jolteon fight, Blue will have Ninetales as his fire-type instead, which outspeeds and knows Fire Spin (which his AI will force him to use exclusively). Furthermore, Jolteon has 4x super-effective damage with Pin Missile (and, again, will only use that due to AI) on top of its already high crit chance due to its base 130 speed stat. Exeggutor's level would need to be in the upper 80s to outspeed the Ninetales and it will never be able to outspeed the Jolteon even at level 100 without badge boosting.
Interesting... I had thought this one would be not much different than its Surge-tier pre-evo. Apparently the higher base stats do help a lot more than the extra level-up moves.
I'm curious to see how different the times on these runs would be is you started the run times after the Brock split. Like just how many pokemon are held back because of poor moveset
1) I feel your pain. As I watch, I am doing a randomized Emerald run with an Exeggcute , and I had to grind to level 14 for the first rival fight. Barrage is such a bad move. I am surprised it wasn't replace with bullet seed. 2) Wait? You think that Venomoth is a Bug Poison type? That's crazy! It's obviously a flying/psychic type. 3) Exeggutor is such a binary pokemon. Until you get Psychic, it's stuck with very weak physical attacks. I'm not surprised that it's the equal of pokemon who tended to have a worse time overall.
18:36 "His Venomoth is last and this Bug/Poison type has 4x damage in the form of Leech Life." Hearing Scott call Venomoth a Bug/Poison type just feels wrong. At first I thought it was just the usual joke, but then I realised.
I honestly never understood the supposed "balance cost" of stone evolutions. Exeggutor, the stone evolution of a Pokémon you need to go to the Safari Zone to get (and thus, mid-game), gets only the Level 1 moves from Exeggcute's learnset. If you evolve it as soon as you get it, you can get... Stomp as a bonus move. Clefable, Nidoking and Nidoqueen, stone evolutions you can get before Misty, get four (for Nidoqueen and Nidoking, five in Yellow) of Clefairy, Nidorino and Nidorina's level up moves, respectively. Nidoking and Nidoqueen even get a powerful bonus move in Thrash and Body Slam, respectively, if you evolve them too early.
Maybe this run provides an idea for a new series in these games, Something like 'ideal sets' so start the game with the ideal moveset of your choosing then see how fast they can really go.
You should do an Exeggutor run where you make Barrage and Egg Bomb grass type, it could be incredible if it got a better earlygame; if Exeggutor had these moves as a grass STAB it could have a S tier speed, possibly even better than Hypno and Gengar
Man, just giving this body slam would be enough to get it through that middle game. EDIT: even level 1 leech seed would be a crazy boost to this even with the slow kill. It'll keep it feeling the same, have a move execute would normally learn, and would give a "grass" move to make it feel more authentic.
I wonder if you could backport all pokemon which non-legendary non-mega pokemon would do the best. I think Garchomp will crush both gen 1 and 2. For gen 1 it starts with dragon rage for the early game, gets dig soon and then once it reaches Celadon it can crush the rest of the game with a special set because Garchomp can and often is run as a mixed attacker. For gen 2, it can make use of rare candies whenever it needs without worry because it can easily set up on the pikachu against red safely dues to its ground type. Another option for gen 1 is Meowscarada. In gen1 its signature move is essentially Razor Leaf with 70 BP, it starts with a grass move and is really fast for gen1 standards. Also an interesting mon to backport imo is Arceus. You would think it would be amazing, then you look at its level 1 movepool... yeah.
That ending was stressful! Really poor luck there, you should've been able to get past the Alakazam ~68% of the time. For a future run, would it be worth doing a first pass through Viridian Forest on minimum battles to blackout grind on the Jr. Trainer a few times for efficient Exp or does the backtracking and extra time on the Bug Catcher make that not worth it?
How effective would Bide be on a Chansey? It has crazy HP and by learning soft boiled could recover.after use. Is this something you've considered. Also, I know this is an Exeggutor video, but this idea dropped into my head when you were using Bide so I thought I'd leave a comment in case I forgot later. Great video, as always.
I see you're doing your part to abolish the term "good AI". I agree that it was misleading. Still, I'll miss it a bit, because knowing the term helped me feel like part of the "in-crowd" lol.
Did anyone let Scott know that Grass type moves are special? I know mega drain/solar beam are trash, but i think with that base special, mega drain/double edge could do stuff for the mid game alongside psychic beefed up with PP up.
8 resets because of poison and freeze... That's nuts. I think it would perform better if it had started off with Mega Drain as it is a transferable egg move. I think it could easily shave 5 minutes if it did start with Mega Drain.
Scott, the flow of skipping the random trainers perfectly is underappreciated. It's so satisfying to watch every time

Granted, it can learn Toxic, so you can take advantage of the Leech Seed/Toxic glitch if you want, but that's not going to be enough for a solo challenge, and the line doesn't have the HP or defenses to Toxic Stall effectively, even with the healing from Leech Seed.
If anyone's wondering how the Flareon fight is easier than the Jolteon fight, then here's the explanation:
In the Jolteon fight, Blue will have Ninetales as his fire-type instead, which outspeeds and knows Fire Spin (which his AI will force him to use exclusively).
Sub hour time. I kinda expected that, I never thought it was a good mon but I guess this proves it wasn't as bad as I thought.
Always bet on psychic in Gen 1
Sandslash is now the sand / poison type
It's gotta be the duo weezing duo, because they both have 2 weezing
Scott forced to use Venomoth's correct typing. XD
Would be interesting to see how much of an improvement you could get (if any) if you evolved stone evos mid-run.
I’m surprised it doesn’t get Dream Eater
Interesting... I had thought this one would be not much different than its Surge-tier pre-evo. Apparently the higher base stats do help a lot more than the extra level-up moves.
The fact that kadabra is not a slow growth rate Pokémon is crazy to me. It really should be.
I'm curious to see how different the times on these runs would be is you started the run times after the Brock split. Like just how many pokemon are held back because of poor moveset
Perfect upload time for my lunch
18:36 "His Venomoth is last and this Bug/Poison type has 4x damage in the form of Leech Life."
Hearing Scott call Venomoth a Bug/Poison type just feels wrong. At first I thought it was just the usual joke, but then I realised.
Lol, same.
Pardonnez mon foutu Francais, but what the feckin' daffodil did you just call Venomoth?!?!
Bulbasaur is still the guy that could just shave off those few seconds to reach the higher tier. I’m sure it’ll get there eventually.
Now this is a Mekkah Moment
WHAT? Scott NOT mistyping Venomoth? Unbelievable! :)
AND unlearning HYPNOSIS? Who are you and what have you done to Scott :)
hey scott! in gen 2 Exeggutor starts with confusion as well! would a run where you give him confusion be an idea for a stream sometime next year?
Maybe this run provides an idea for a new series in these games,
Something like 'ideal sets' so start the game with the ideal moveset of your choosing then see how fast they can really go.
4:19 Alakazam: Am I a joke to you? :(
Wait, Venomoth's a Bug/Poison type?! Holy heck!
You should do an Exeggutor run where you make Barrage and Egg Bomb grass type, it could be incredible if it got a better earlygame; if Exeggutor had these moves as a grass STAB it could have a S tier speed, possibly even better than Hypno and Gengar
Ninjask bukkake
Man, just giving this body slam would be enough to get it through that middle game.
EDIT: even level 1 leech seed would be a crazy boost to this even with the slow kill. It'll keep it feeling the same, have a move execute would normally learn, and would give a "grass" move to make it feel more authentic.
@@trevorp875 1v1 shuckle me
Heh gen 2 starting moveset which adds confusion would be enough
I want to see runs with the best move set a pokemon can get to start (like trading a pokemon that has egg moves from gen2)
4 straight poisons is a 0.16% chance, that’s just brutal rng
I recently found out BIDE is called PATIENCE in Italian (PAZIENZA).
I mean, if rest can prevent between 4 and 8 resets, it seems pretty op. So use it.
Did you notice that Scoot said the type of Venomoth wrong? Why was that?
It should have been Bug/Flying!
My my, what a stressful finale.
The Champions Jolteon gets Pin Missile that is why Flareon is easier if you didn't know
I wonder if you could backport all pokemon which non-legendary non-mega pokemon would do the best.
You would think it would be amazing, then you look at its level 1 movepool... yeah.
Can you make a Parasect Christmas Special, and the thumbnail a Parasect with a Santa claus Hat
I'm hoping at some point you do tradebacks/egg moves
Wow didnt know that was venemoths type always though grass psychic
I see you're doing your part to abolish the term "good AI". I agree that it was misleading. Still, I'll miss it a bit, because knowing the term helped me feel like part of the "in-crowd" lol.
If you ever make changes to movepools for Pokémon to get faster times, this would be a great first start
Did anyone let Scott know that Grass type moves are special?
I know mega drain/solar beam are trash, but i think with that base special, mega drain/double edge could do stuff for the mid game alongside psychic beefed up with PP up.
So I'm just curious why are the high experience Haunters a bad idea.
Never understood why you don't black out train on the jr trainer in bricks gym
8 resets because of poison and freeze... That's nuts. I think it would perform better if it had started off with Mega Drain as it is a transferable egg move. I think it could easily shave 5 minutes if it did start with Mega Drain.
