This is one of the most underrated Super Bowls of all-time. The 90s incarnation of the Steel Curtain had contained Emmit Smith for a majority of the game. However the Steelers' cupcake offense was having trouble scoring points. After having to settle for a field goal to pull within 20-10, Bill Cowher calls for a surprise onside kick, one of the gutsiest calls ever. jmaal2345. No kidding. At one point in the first half, he threw nine consecutive completions. That's one thing I will always say about Aikman's career: he was deadly accurate.
@@forrmarques1416 Yeah. But that ain't the point , the Steelers Defense kept that Offense of the Cowboys shut down. Despite having Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin. The Cowboys got that win thanks overall to O Donnell.
If the Steelers drafted Dan Marino in the 1983 draft, they win this game 31-27, however, it didn't turn out that way. Hell, if Marino was on the Steelers his entire career, the Steelers have a 90s dynasty.
And they should’ve picked him. All the rumors before the draft were bullshit. I mean how could they have gone wrong with drafting a future hall of Famer who also happened to be a Pittsburgh native?? Go directly from the retiring Terry Bradshaw to Marino. Took the Steelers more than 20 years to get a true franchise quarterback again when they drafted Roethlisberger.
Right. If O'Donnell hadn't played so poorly and thrown those boneheaded picks, they could've stolen this from the Cowboys because they were down only 3 in the 4th in spite of his poor play.
Even as a Cowboy fan for this game. I really thought Pittsburgh was going to pull it off. The Steelers defense completely shutdown the Cowboys offense that second half. If Neil O'Donnell doesn't throw the ball straight at Larry Brown, the Steelers probably would have won this game.
I wouldn't go that far. Even if both those passes hit the ground the Steelers would have been punting to one of the most dangerous punt returners of all time in Deion Sanders, and giving it back to the NFL's leading rusher. A lot of teams bottled Smith up in the 1st half only to watch him gash them time and time again in the 2nd half. It's not likely that smaller Steelers D line could keep Emmitt from taking over. Just look at what he did after the interceptions. It was impressive that Cowher even got that Steelers team to the Superbowl, and amazing he kept them close with one of the gutsiest calls in SB history (the onside kick). But the Cowboys were always going to win that game. They had too much talent who weren't about to lose no matter who their HC was!
@@trjohnson57 Cowboy fan here. On the 2nd INT the alternative to throwing the interception wasn't the ball hitting the ground. O'Donnell had Corey Holiday open down the sidelines for a touchdown.
@@Bob31415 it was zone coverage, and Brown was reading the QB and able to sit down for a possible crossing route. O'Donnell felt the pressure in his face and threw the hot route while the receiver went deep (O'Donnell would never have gotten that deep pass off). In any case, there was safety help deep so no one was running wide open. Bottom line, the Cowboys were the better team and if not for Bam Morris breaking what seemed like 80 tackles, it wouldn't have been close. The failed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th and 1 plays did as much to hurt Pittsburgh because it forced them to pass more due to time remaining. If they convert at midfield they had a real chance to win.
@@trjohnson57 There was no safety help deep. (Go to the YT video of the full game from which the time stamps below are taken). The safety is in the middle of the field and Corey Holiday is open down the sidelines for at least a 40 yard gain if not a TD. You are right about O'Donnell throwing the hot read. Watch the Steelers play at 1:55:09. This play occurs after the 2nd interception and the Cowboys going up 27-17. This is a completion to Corey Holiday who replaced Ernie Mills who was knocked out of the game by Larry Brown earlier in the 4th quarter. Compare this play to the 2nd interception by Larry Brown (at 1:49:08). It is the exact same play call by Pittsburgh. Corey Holiday (the replacement) RAN THE WRONG ROUTE on the interception play but got it right on the next series (at 1:55:09).ua-cam.com/video/VaREL8LSN-s/v-deo.html
True. He was calling the plays for the stillers offense at this point tho. Not sure what ron earhardt was doing, he was technically the OC. Chan was the orchestrator of the 5 wide.
Waited for years to get super bowl revenge on you guys and even though i gave a few friends a hard time for a minute...in good conscious I really couldn't say much because if the way the game went down....2 very bad passes by Odonnell was the obvious reason for Dallas victory and Dallas couldn't gain any offensive yards in most of the 2nd half...I WAS ROBBED OF MY CHANCE TO BRAG LOL...😠😠😠😠😠
+Curtis Rupp yea if they would have put Kordell in has QB instead of Mr. Magoo I mean Neil O'Donnell 2 Ints directly to Larry Brown with to receivers in the area I am shock the NFL dint do an investigation on possible game rigging scandal
I don't see how Neil O'Donnell's meltdown in Superbowl XXX didn't get more commentary... 3 interceptions... two to the exact same guy, in the open, on the numbers for 77 yards & 14 points.?.?... If you followed that year, the Cowboys offense was rolling through teams; and the Steelers defense was holding them in the game, 13-7 at the half; a real opportunity for a win. The Steelers defense held Smith to 49 yards on the ground and only 9 in the second half! But O'Donnell choked hard (I mean a performance that bad, you'd almost think he was on the Cowboy's team.) Without the 14 points O'Donnell handed the Cowboys, the score's 17-13 Steelers... certainly a different game. Larry Brown shouldn't have been the Cowboy's MVP (certainly not a hero), for what, being awake?..., the Cowboys should have made Neil O'Donnell their MVP!
Why does everyone seem to think the Steelers would've scored on either of those possessions or that Dallas wouldn't have scored even after the Steelers punted? Dallas was the superior team, no question. The Steelers played at their peak, Cowher and Bam Morris bought them an extra possession and score on a brilliant call and play. But even with that they were still overmatched. While there were "off script" things that happened in the game, the result was pretty much exactly what people expected. Just like when the better Steelers teams beat the Cowboys teams in the 70's. Dallas punched over their weight in those games but the right team won.
Larry Greene in super bowl X (1976) and super bowl XIII (1979) Dallas lost to Pittsburgh twice and the super bowl rivalry is called "The Battle Of Champions".
The thing that bothers me about SB 10 is that the Cowboys were never trailing until like less than 10 min remaining. I honestly feel if Hollywood Henderson returned that opening kickoff for a TD, the Cowboys win.
nymike06: Actually, that's a good point! I never thought of that. In the 70's, Dallas should have at least won one of those Super Bowls (10 or 13). Also, they should definitely have won SB V against the Colts. Dallas has had many historic wins, but just as equally, many devastating losses. In my humble opinion, our Cowboys should have seven or eight Lombardi trophies - not a 'mere' five! :)
Oddly enough too all those three Super Bowl looses took place at the Orange Bowl. Lose by 3 to the Colts and 4 to Pittsburgh 2X. All three losses could of went the other way. Super Bowl was a big game with so many incredible players. The winner got to claim 'Team of the 70s'' I'm happy the 90s Cowboys reversed all those painful losses in the 70s.
Only 38 at the time and feeling adrenaline as is he was playing Bill Cowhers call for the onside kick is one of the greatest in Super Bowl history. Let’s Go!
17:03 the surprise onside was a good call. Had Pitt kicked it deep, Dallas with emmitt smith would’ve drained as much clock possibly ending the game in 34 to 10 favoring Dallas. Though there was more than enough time, cowher had to take a chance or face a possible blowout
@@billbates5475 Yea but they could have won 4 instead of 3 and might have won many more. Barry sucked. Pale comparison to Johnson. Not even close, meaning incompetent. I could have coached them to the 3rd SB. Maybe 4 or 5.
@@craigmanning2439 Blame Jerry Jones' ego. He thought his personnel were so good that he could pull a random man off the street, appoint him as head coach and still bring home a Lombardi trophy.
I remember Paul Harvey commenting on this halftime show as a pagan ritual. I believe he was referring to the pagan goddess Diana was exalted and Diana Ross was being exalted or lifted up before the people like a goddess. The use of the cross on the ground probably played a role
Neil O'Donnell was responsible for 2 Cowboy touchdowns in a game where they won by 10. Sad how this turned out. Cowboys were a more talented team but Switzer was thoroughly outcoached.
You mean he got his gift. Super Bowl XL is universally recognized by those who know something about football as the worst officiated SB in history with EVERY bogus call going in favor of Pittsburgh. Seattle's QB throws an interception and gets a 15 yard penalty for blocking below the waist when he TACKLED the player who made the interception. This penalty set up a Steelers' TD. This is just one example.
Robert Graham that penalty didn't set up the Steelers td the momentum already completely shifted since the interception would've still counted. If you look closely that really was the only bad call that game. Jackson Pushed off so that was the correct call, and on Bens td the call on the field was a touchdown and by rule they cannot overturn the call if there isn't complete 100% evidence that the ball did not break the plane and Roethlisbergers arm was covering the top of the ball so you couldn't tell if the ball never touched the very tip of the goal line so the call needed to stand. And the holding call in the 4th was a hold. Locklear grabbed Haggans jersey and pulled backwards causing him to fall over. It was a small hold but could still be called because it technically was. You can't blame the refs for Seattle losing that game, I remember on Ben's interception in the red zone he got blocked in the back while perusing the defender and it wasn't called and that allowed him to gain like 30 more yards. Missed calls can happen at times but it did not decide that game.
A lot of people forget that the previous season the Cowboys were going for 3 Super Bowls in a row when they lost in the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME to the dreaded 49ers. However after the Cowboys lost Jerry Jones went out and signed Deion Sanders away from the 49ers which pushed the Cowboys over the top during the 1995 season to win another Super Bowl. This was to the chagrin of Stephen Jones. This is when JJ had cajones and everyone knew this was his team including his Capboy son Stephen Jones. Those days (going on 28 years) are long gone. "Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end"!
Jason Wyatt or that blatant missed pass interference on the playmaker that should have been called on Deion in the 1994 NFC Championship Game. Home cooking
Dallas finally beat the Steelers in the super bowl. They say the third time is the charm,I hope Landry was watching this game.Landry was an awesome coach.
We started out like we were gonna blow the steelers away. But Michael Irvin's pushoff( that would've put us up 17-0) led to it turning into a struggle. If ANYONE had told me then that we would be SB less for at least the next quarter of a century following this( our 3rd win in 4 years) there's no way I would've ever believed it.
Other than the '78 Steelers, I can't think of a more talented team than the '95 Cowboys...& MY STEELERS HAD 'EM BEAT IF IT WEREN'T FOR NEIL 'JAGOFF' O'DONNELL!!!
it was a comeback after Dallas lost to Pittsburgh in super bowls X and XIII and a rivalry for these two football teams are called "The Battle Of Champions".
Pittsburgh born n raised here. This was a painful game for a 9 year old to watch. The Steelers are the only team with 6 SB wins though. I hate the cowboys and was glad to see GB beat them. Also, the Steelers beat KC without scoring a touchdown. It'll be interesting to see the Steelers Patriots game for the AFC Championship.
This game was kind of a microcosm of that 1995 Dallas season - they didn't play great most of the time but just got by on talent alone for the most part. Same for this game, they were dominated by the Steelers for the last 3 quarters but their talent was enough to barely push them by. That and an incompetent quarterback on Pittsburgh's side.

Everybody that lives in Texas ought to be a Cowboy fan, if not, shame!
jmaal2345. No kidding. At one point in the first half, he threw nine consecutive completions. That's one thing I will always say about Aikman's career: he was deadly accurate.
jmaal2345: I wish I could get the full game on You-Tube.
Oh the good old days with the cowboys.
Bill Cowher is a good person. He shows more happiness after a loss than Bill Belichick shows after a win

If y are happy with losing go play church bingo
The Cowboys were the better ball team
There’s no shame in losing to a better team
Losing to a team you’re better than is far more painful 😖
Haha, well put. I'll always have love for 'The Chin'.
@@dumisatonyjohnson8145 The Steelers gave that game away. And the Steelers was coming back hunt the Cowboys in the second half.
O'donnell choked so many times in this game...
After the penalty on Irvin negated that TD ,the Cowboys offense didn't do a God damned thing the rest of the day.
I agree, bad penalty but they still won.
Except win the super bowl 😆
@@forrmarques1416 Yeah. But that ain't the point , the Steelers Defense kept that Offense of the Cowboys shut down. Despite having Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin.
The Cowboys got that win thanks overall to O Donnell.

I'm a Cowboys fan 4 Life but i got mad respect for the Steelers!!! They're a good Football team!!!
If the Steelers drafted Dan Marino in the 1983 draft, they win this game 31-27, however, it didn't turn out that way. Hell, if Marino was on the Steelers his entire career, the Steelers have a 90s dynasty.
Wow your right
And they should’ve picked him.
Lol i was 15 days old when this game happened, but i know my dad had me watching the game, we're die hard cowboys fans
That's wassup !! Go Cowboys ✭✭✭✭✭
I know right
Ben Richardson I was 7 And shit those were the good old days...
Jose Arellano me too I remember watching with my parents and uncle
Ben Richardson Wow, it was my first year outta highschool as I've graduated the previous year.😊
I remember thinking Cowboys would whip them and got pretty nervous in the 4th quarter
Right. If O'Donnell hadn't played so poorly and thrown those boneheaded picks, they could've stolen this from the Cowboys because they were down only 3 in the 4th in spite of his poor play.
We got to get back to the Super Bowl ! It's been too damn long without a ring .Lets go Boys !!!
Revenge for the prior 2 SB losses lol!
Chan Gailey was the Steelers Wide Receivers Coach, the man who eventually replaced Switzer as Cowboys Head Coach!
True. He was calling the plays for the stillers offense at this point tho. Not sure what ron earhardt was doing, he was technically the OC. Chan was the orchestrator of the 5 wide.
I believe Bill still patting himself on the back for that “gutsy call”

Ya he threw the game..

GO COWBOYS!!!
hearing myrons voice always warms my heart no matter the situation, RIP
Thanks for the memories Jimmy Johnson! 3 of 4!

Cowboys-Steelers 3 Super Bowls.
3 Great Games.
One of the many games that fuel up the Cowboys-Steelers rivalry.
Cowboys finally got payback for the 70s losses to the Steelers. One of the best wins in Cowboys history!
nymike06: Exactly! Sweet revenge for the loss in SB 13. I don't lose any sleep over SB 10. The Steelers were the better team.
The winner got to claim 'Team of the 70s''
I'm happy the 90s Cowboys reversed all those painful losses in the 70s.
Dallas wasn't any where near the same team they were under Johnson.
............................and they still won.
@@billbates5475 Yea but they could have won 4 instead of 3 and might have won many more. Barry sucked. Pale comparison to Johnson. Not even close, meaning incompetent. I could have coached them to the 3rd SB. Maybe 4 or 5.

I think Cower is a great coach, I wish we had him, and I'm a Cowboys fan.
Ironically enough had the Bills played in a Super Bowl against the switzer coached cowboys as opposed to the Jimmy Johnson version, they might’ve won.
Bill cowher got his reward 10 years later...
I would Love and i mean Love for Bill Cower to be the Cowboy's coach for the next 10 year. Hell i will take five years.
Cowher is an ape with scars on his knuckles. Gimme Jimmy Johnston in a second.

Turnovers were the key in this game.
This game clearly showed the personality and resolve of Pittsburgh’s coach. He out coached Barry Switzser but just came up short.
No he didn't 😂
"Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end"!
they would have won four in a row if it wasn't 4 Jerry Jones missing up the team chemistry getting rid of their head coach
Who knows, maybe 5 in a row?
Jason Wyatt I totally agree with you on that Jerry Jones is the biggest problem in Dallas
We would have won 4 in a row if we hadn't spotted the 49'ers 21 points.
