I was in the SNL audience during this incredible performance. (I attended college in NYC after graduating high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma-home of our local musical hero Leon Russell)!
That's incredible Caroline!!! I wish I'd have been in the NY audience that night too, it was just me & my 20 best friends sitting in the grass w/ someone's TV sitting outside watching SNL at the Willowick Apts in Tulsa that night! Hale grad here, grew up listening to the MOSAT along w/ Blackwell, Markham & all the other guys showing the world how Okies do it. ;o)) Tulsa Queen Ann Bell is singing BGV on this classic!!!
Wedding Album i had on tape as a permanent fixture in the car player - we sang it together and Mary's sweet voice was a beautiful counterpoint to Leon's phrasing - golden days - glad - so glad we lived it.
Ok, so I'm an antique hippie. I just loved Leon Russell songs. He wrote some beautiful songs like This Masquerade, Superstar, Delta Lady, Goodtime Charlies got the blues, thats just a few of the many hits that he were performed by himself and many other famous singers. Great musician and songwriter and an outstanding performer. He arranged everyhing on the "Mad dogs and Englishman" tour. Might not have made him rich, but sure helped make him famous.
@@rellrheeannaRN the real problem with Mad Dogs and Englishmen was Joe Cocker. Riding high after Woodstock, he refused to capitalize on it by putting together a tour. He needed musicians and songs. His record company hired Leon because Joe refused to be engaged in his own career. Leon was in his early 20s and had no experience touring on that level. They gave him carte blanche to put together the best showcase for Cocker, which he did. Sorry about the money part.
I'm a bit late to comment but I just discovered this video. Like you, I'm in my second day of rediscovering Leon Russell. I'd forgotten what I great artist he was! I'm also sharing this great music with my younger brother...sharing the love!😍
I loved them. She released a fantastic funky and soulful solo album called Heart Of Fire as Mary Russell and two great albums as Mary McCreary before they wed on Shelter Records.
such a beautiful couple visually and their sound together - incredible chemistry musically! what a gift to come upon. god i loved SNL back in the day. such a beautiful funky and soulful performance
Is it me or is Leon winking at his ( then )wife through this performance? I think he is assuring her that she is doing great & she is. Just so sweet. RIP Mr. Bridges
yes, Jean Pagan he winks at her. such a loving and almost unperceivable wink... assuring her that she is doing great or that she is the only important person to him among an audience of hundreds. either way, I couldn't be any more envious of that woman.
After more than 40 years of watching SNL, from Episode 1, this performance remains my absolute favorite. The last third of Satisfy You is especially compelling... I miss Leon and Mary...
this women was evil after the split she kept his kids from held back the gifts he would send on bdays and holidays his son didnt see him for 10 years he turned 18 he headed strait for his dads
This was the BEST rendition of this soong. Saw this on tv , at the time, & it STUCK WITH ME. Always think of the love of my life when hearing this rendition.. DEFINATELY, the best performance on SNL!!
Have you ever looked at his eyes on the cover of the 'Will 'O the Wisp' album cover?? Check it out... they're just as hypnotizing and mysterious as they are in person!! Just sayin..
Lamentável que naqueles ídos não houvesse preocupação suficiente com o áudio nas gravações de programas de TV. Mas, mesmo com o som deficiente, o pouco que dá pra escutar é maravilhoso! Leon, Mary and the band FOREVER!
She’s awesome, such immense energy! I wore this record out. They sure don’t look like they are having fun with each other on stage though. Russell looks he’s Tim Robbins playing a diva.
Oh! MY..MARY IS MY LOVELY BABY SISTER. YES! MY MATERNAL SISTER!! I WILL ALWAYS CHERISH HER NOW, AND FOREVER. MY FAVORITE SONG IS "BUTTERFLIES IN HEAVEN", "THIS MASQUERADE" & "A SONG FOR YOU"by The late Leon Russsell, my x- Brother In Law! ..LISTEN TO THE LYRICS!! VERY SPECIAL AND STILL DEAR TO MY HEART! 🙏🏽❤SHE KNOWS THIS😂... *IT WILL ALWAYS BE..US...,*FRAN,(ME,*BERNIE,)& YOU MY DEAR BABY SISTER *MARY!!I LOVE YOU♾!!!XOXO❤❤🙏🏽🙏🏽🐝

Saw him in Detroit early 70s with Delaney & Bonnie ☮️

I was in 7th grade watching this first run. By the 4th of July, Rainbow in Your Eyes had made it to number. It was the Bicentennial.
I agree Leons eyes could hypnotize you!

Danny O'Keefe wrote and sang Good time Charlie got the blues.
@@marjoryrainey73 I read that it was Leon Russell. But sometimes you do get wrong information and then pass it on. So I see how that can happen.
Bet youre not as antique as I. And I agree...we've loved him since we first heard him!
mad dogs and Zenglishmen costs more then it earned as Leeon insisted on control... 4 dtummers for one ...,

You can tell just by the looks between them, how much they were in love!
I understand they had quite a lot of love and respect for each other.
Cripes his eyes... one could get lost in his eyes.... 💕 great couple! Fantastic musician! Day 2 of looking at everything Leon Russell... 💜
@Blonde Sunshine
My first love had those eyes, only bluer. And they had the same effect on every girl around too.💙

And her complexion is flawless.
I'm in my third week of all things Leon Russell. He looks so happy here. Incredible eyes that man had. He winked at Mary. Lucky gal!
I loved them. She released a fantastic funky and soulful solo album called Heart Of Fire as Mary Russell and two great albums as Mary McCreary before they wed on Shelter Records.

My personal opinion, this was the best music performance they ever had on Saturday Night Live. To this date, certainly one of the top five.
You've seen them all?
Got to see them perform in an open air amphitheater in San Diego. Very moving.
So happy to find this performance! Their Wedding album one of my favorites!
Yes, very envious of her. What a sexy devil he was. Love and miss you, Leon!
I agree! Those eyes......
Yes, satisified!

I agree with you I think he was winking at her at the time.. they were really in love I know for a fact cuz I know Mary personally..
@Bill Sargent If you blinked, you would have missed it!
You don't reckon it could have anything to do with the lyrics?? I do.......
Yes!! Wedding album ❤

彼のおかげで心から音楽の豊かさを知りました。
とても小さなバッキングのピアノは、とても大きな転調へと進み、歌のメロディを感動へと誘う。
数々の転調はとてもドラマティックな世界へ導く。ミスター、永遠に。。❤

The video of Leon and Mary Russell says “4years ago”. More like FORTY!
My left ear is jealous that my right ear got to listen to this.
They kept it pretty quiet, I never recall hearing it mentioned. Leon was pretty young like a lot of us in this appearance on SNL.
