    Thank you very much. It helped me with not replacing my whole garage door opener. It would not open with any remote. It is over 20 years old and after troubleshooting with Chamberlain it was determined that the circuit board needs to be replaced ($100 on ebay). With this solution I can open and close it from anywhere. Thanks again.

    For those who are curious the NO, Com and NC connectors on the board stand for "normally open", "common (ground)" and "normally closed".

    Thanks so much it worked perfectly and your directions were spot on..the only problem I ran into was I kept opening and closing the door so much In my excitement I blew the capacitor that starts the motor. Hahaha...I ordered a new one just now and will be here tomorrow.
    Update: IMPORTANT INFO!! Please make sure the switch is in the correct mode with only one light on. I had both lights lit in the incorrect mode and it did smoke my capacitor that starts the motor on the opener.

    Todd, I wanted to add that most openers have an additional security button that disables the remote. Your method allows remote access while retaining the security of a disabled remote. Thanks for all you do.

    This worked great on my 20 year old quantum opener. thanks for the video, huge help. The only thing you might want to add is this: Adjust your "inching" setting to about 1 second. You only want the connection powered for a second to start the door opening or closing. If you don't do this, you will constantly be hitting the button in the app twice to turn the power off and then back on again to start the door moving.

    Thank you so much. I installed my board today and everything went smooth thanks to your excellent instructions! My home alarm has a garage door sensor. I need to figure if I can have Alexa check if the garage door is closed when I say close garage door. This is so it will not open a closed door!

    Hi Todd, your video was nicely put together, but you failed to mention one important thing for your viewers. The button next to the pairing button is important to discuss. If the LED next to that button is on (mine was by default), and your fancy switch receives a command via eWeLink or Alexa to turn the switch "on", it will stay in the shorted "on" position. You don't want that to happen in a garage door opener application. That would be like pressing your wall mounted garage door button and never releasing the button until you give it a manual "off" command. Pressing that button next to the outer LED will turn that LED off which puts the device in an "auto off" mode after a 1 second delay of receiving the "on" command. This is the ideal mode for a garage door opener or electric gate opener application. Hope this helps! 🤙

      Please re-watch at 10:31 in the video and 18:07 in the video. Maybe I should have made a STRONGER point to the button settings. You're correct....BOTH buttons should not be on. Thank you for watching and allowing us to bring up this setting within the comments section here, so that others can benefit :) Todd

      PVT-PILOT is that inching versus self-locking? I'm looking at the devices online and scratching my head trying to figure out which ones we need. We have a double and single door each with a wall button (do people refer to this as "wall wart"? Trying to get the lingo down on FAQ boards) and each door with a remote although all three of our cars use homelink. I'm trying to figure out how many channels we need. Some say one extra for each remote? So I'd think 2 channel for each door based on that? Sorry I'm a newb

    • @shayf8369
      @shayf8369 5 років тому

      tw HomeShow hi Todd, in reading reviews of switches on amazon I’m seeing where some claimed to have controlled two doors with a similar board that has two channels “wiring in parallel with the wall buttons”. Have you heard of this? We have a detached garage with a double and single door. The wall buttons are closer to our router so this may work better if I figure it out. Need to read a little more on it. The SmartThings door sensors I put on the physical garage doors must be a little too far from the ST hub as they don’t register all the time. Plus the wind shaking the doors and triggering the sensor is killing the batteries. Like one a week. Great channel. To the point and helpful!

    • @shayf8369
      @shayf8369 5 років тому

      Ok so just to answer my own question since nobody jumped in, you can just wire these up to your wall buttons 💁 much easier and no ladder necessary. Used a two channel switch for $15 and hooked up switch to each door at the wall buttons. Controlling with my Apple Watch when I go for a run or walk my dogs through Alexa via the voice in a can app on my watch 👍

    • @pvt-pilot
      @pvt-pilot 5 років тому +1

      @@shayf8369 yes, absolutely you can wire it in parallel at the wall buttons, at the motor or anywhere along the wire run. It is just an easier setup at the motor because there is power readily available there. How did you power the unit at the wall buttons? How did you hide the ugly circuit board at the wall button location and still get power to it?

  • @jeffrudolph1802
    @jeffrudolph1802 5 років тому +4

    Unless I'm missing something the downside of this setup is that Alexa does not know if the door is open or close, so you have to know it's current state. Unlike the MyQ app that knows if the door is opened or closed. Granted MyQ won't work w/ Alexa. But this is cool, especially when your driving up and you have the new soon to ship Echo Auto for your car you can say Alexa open black hole. For security I would not use open garage door. Thanx for posting video, the test to see if your opener is compatible , was helpful along w/ the rest

    • @MrTimdtoolman1
      @MrTimdtoolman1 5 років тому

      I too have the MyQ garage door module and I installed this board so that I could use Alexa to open/close my garage door if my hands are full and it's difficult to push the button. The MyQ app will still send a notification when the door goes up or down no mate how you open the garage door so this is the perfect way to work around the fact that Chamberlin does not allow you to integrate Alexa with their module and you can know the state of your garage door.

      I hope your LAN connection is separate from this device. Nevermind your phone. It might already be compromised with all the permissions you gave it.
      Quote from AVTest:
      "The pure functionality of the app and the Sonoff Basic WiFi Wireless Switch is well encrypted and protected against simple attacks. However, the overall impression is severely clouded by the unencrypted communication to Chinese analysis services, the many permissions of the Android app and the detailed log file stored in the public storage area of the smartphone."
      Since Sonoff uses the same app, I assume they have the same chip as this device for the wifi function.

    Chamberlain and Liftmaster offer on their app a subscription @$10/year(Google Home) for the ability to only CLOSE your garage door. OPEN is not allowed for security issues. You also can't use ALEXA only Google Home Assistant. For a one time investment of $15 for this unit, you can open and close garage door through either Alexa or Google. Nice job, TODD! This was some great information. I ordered 3 units and have them all working but for 2 of them, if I disconnect power from the control module and reconnect, the relay activates and the door opens. I am not sure if I have changed a setting that causes this or not. I think this could be a security issue if the power goes off and comes back on while I am away from home.

      I know its been a few years but I had the same issue. Came home and my gate a G door was open... I fixed this issue by plugging the device into a YPlink smart plug.($5 on Black friday).. I then made an Alexa routine When I tell it to open garage it did these 3 things in the same routine
      1. Turn smartplug on
      2 Wait 20 seconds
      3. Turn smart plug off
      I threw the breaker a few times to test it and it stopped the unwanted openings

    I have the MyQ garage door module but since it does not work with Alexa I'm going to try this (Chamberlin SUCKS for not including this feature IMO) but because I have the MYQ app I will know the state of the door (up/down) so that will take care the the shortcoming of this setup. Great video, it was very helpful, and super inexpensive.
    Update; I bought the module from your link in the description and it is working like a champ to open my garage door with Alexa. The only Issue I had was the module I received was slightly different different than the one you have and I did have to press the second button on the board to change the mode the default mode of "Normally Closed" (NC) to "Normally Open" (NO) so the switch would work as needed for this application. Not a big deal at all but if Todd mentioned this I missed it. This is an awesome solution, thank you Todd for making this video.

      Yes. Mine started to do that a couple of weeks ago, but I figured out how to fix that issue. If you open the eWeLink App and select your garage door that you added, then at the top right of the App you should see 3-dot menu selection, select that and goto Settings, now scroll-up until you get to the bottom settings, you should see Inching/duration....I think mine was default .3 or something, I changed mine to 1.0....(I would change this little-by-little up from .3 and keep trying until you get to "the sweet-spot" that will work everytime on the first command. Try to connect a loop-wire and touch to both of those connections and see if that opens or closes the door. If so....you may be able to connect the eWeLink to that switch instead of the garage door opener unit. But, remember just tap those 2 connections for a second with a loop (test wire) on the back of your switch/button connections and see if it works.

But, on my Linear (3-4 years old) opener our cars homelink buttons didn't work anymore, nor did the wall button. My 10 year old Chamberlin same issue with the wall button not working. I believe it has to do with both openers being a rolling code style opener. I am not willing to give up the buttons on the wall or the built in buttons on the visor of my cars. This will not work with the latest high-end Chamberlain/LiftMaster openers that use Security+ 2.0 technology. They use a proprietary communication protocol on the 2-conductor bell wire that connects the wall controller with the opener; shorting the wires together only causes loss of power at the wall controller that contains the door control and light control buttons, but the door won't open or close. The next-best thing is to wire the eWeLINK Smart Control N.O. relay output across the pushbutton inside the wall controller, which requires soldering a couple of 22 or 20 AWG wires to the appropriate pads on the circuit board and bringing them out of the wall controller housing to the eWeLINK Smart Control. To reduce likelihood of RF interference with the the wall controller, the eWeLINK Smart Control should be mounted within a meter of the wall controller.

    • @twHomeShow
      @twHomeShow  4 роки тому

      Very good explanation...although, it works fine with my LiftMaster Security +2.0 and the button works with the eWeLink board connected directly to the motor. BUT, my older LiftMaster 2.0 single garage standard door opener - has the eWeLink connected to the motor and the Wall-button doesn't work. This doesn't bother me because I just say or speak-now to open either door. I don't even use the physical buttons anymore. I'm not sure why the buttons work with some and NOT others????

    • @Milosz_Ostrow
      @Milosz_Ostrow 4 роки тому +1

      My only experience has been with a LiftMaster model WLED, which was installed in July 2019, so it's a very recent unit. Chamberlain isn't forthcoming about the technical details of their openers, so it is possible that they've changed the circuitry recently.

If using Google, you'll just have to go to the setup up devices tab and click Works with Google. You'll select eWeLink Smart Home (or Smart We Link - I have both attached to my account, so not exactly sure which is needed now) and log in with your eWeLink account. You should be able to see the device and control it from Google Home now. It's worked for almost 3 years pretty flawlessly.

When the power goes off and back on, the modules activate and open your door/gate. This has happened to me when we were out of town and a neighbor called to tell us. Luckily I could close them remotely from my phone with Alexa, but still a concern. With the gate, there's a car battery in the control box, so I'll just switch the power to it which will be constant. Looks like you’re connecting to the photo eye inputs, some openers have “monitored” photo eyes which means there is always a little voltage running through them when the system is operating, and if the wire breaks it won’t work....this is designed on purpose so the opener won’t work without a safety device. You may need the normally closed and common connection in that case. Also, you used a jumper to open the door, so you essentially created continuity, no voltage was input to the control board. May want to mention that. Make sure your switch output is a dry contact, meaning you are adding minimal to no voltage to the circuit, just continuity. Very easy to test with a multimeter. You don’t want a device that will put mains voltage into your garage door opener when you engage it. Or worse, your gate operator board which is likely 5x the cost of a garage door opener. You will release the magic smoke 💨

    Just a comment about pairing.
    While devices and routers are more and more on 5Gz wifi (or both), most smart apps (eWelink, SmartLife, ASmart ...) only support 2.4 Gz.
    I took me hours struggling with error messages (i.e. "only 2.4Gz supported") and trying all sorts of tricks to get around it, before I found a VERY BASIC and sort of obvious solution.
    Just use an old phone that does not catch the 5Gz. It will do the pairing without any question or message.
