I just completed my project, and it works perfectly. Over the years I must have bought five hundred dollars of junk products that claimed would work with my gate, called the gate motor manufacturer - ALEKO several times, called the gate installer and no one had no clue how to connect my gate to the internet to open and close. This video inspired me so much that I immediately ordered my supplies. The biggest issue was my remote. The gate remote is a key chain fob with three buttons. One button was programmed to open the gate. Since it was designed to be small the circuit board was a layered board, and I could not solder from the bottom. This required me to take out one of the microswitches with the solder points exposed from the top. In my case I could not get bell wire to stick to the small solder point I had to resort to a thin stranded wire from one of my junk projects. I tested my prototype, and it works perfectly. Now I am just waiting for my box to come in, so I house it all together.
Well, I gotta tell ya. Your video prompted me to tackle the wifi control of my driveway gate again. I'd given up on it because I couldnt get the little circuit board to pair with my wifi. Tonight I had success, aided by yours and another UA-cam video. BUT, I wanted to let you know that I finally got it paired and tested in the house with eWilink. Then, I took the little WiFi board and mounted it in the steel gate controller box, about 100 feet from my ASUS WiFi unit in the house. I was surprised that it could get full bars inside the metal box . . . but it did. Now, my gate is controllable from my iPhone! No intermediate clicker needed. It's connected directly to the input on the controller that simply needs a momentary normally-open switch. I'm thrilled! No more carrying a clicker on my motorcycle. No more calling my wife on the phone to come outside and click the gate open. Next step will be to install an Alexa mobile device in our two cars so we can just ask Alexa to open the gate. Thank you for the video. Ken
I couldn't get the little circuit board to pair with my eWeLink. I have 3 of the module and none of them work. The app keep saying 0 devices found. Can you link down the other video you mention please, Thank you.
I just got an advertisement for some $80 smart garage door sensor but it wouldn't work for my gate. Started googling around and came across your video, thank you so much for this tutorial. It's channels like yours that make UA-cam super useful. You certainly gained a like and a subscriber.
My auto gate supply company (Quiko) priced me £360 for equipment to do the same job. I have ordered the kit you showed at a cost of £15. Can't thank you enough!
Hey, brother thanks for searching. I am going a different route, but I appreciate people like you who's not selfless and share your knowledge with people like me.
Hi can you stay what you used? I have a barn with 2 remote controlled doors and a gate. I would like to access them via the Internet to check status (open / closed). and to activate them. Thank you Frank
I have a similar gate, but I want to be able to schedule when the gate will open and close over wi-fi instead of at the motor box every time I want to change it or somehow override the scheduled times. The gate will close automatically after a set number of seconds once you open it. Will this wi-fi module do that for me?
Thank you for this! I notice you had to replace the battery when it died. Any thoughts on an additional hack to provide external power to the remote instead of relying on batteries?
Hi mate, Thanks I managed to do the garage door with your video. For my front gate remote , it got separate button to open and close, 1 for open, 1 to close. How do i program them .
Thanks alot Todd! I managed to hook up and automate two of my gates. Had some issues with the e-Welink app and syncing it with Alexa voice command. Managed to solve it by disabling and re enabling skill in Alexa app. Thanks again for this super video!
Thanks for this information. Only have one question. Everything works fine but Google assistant only opens the gate with turn on gate and not with open and close gate. Any idea how u can change this ?
Good video. What if my gate does not close automatically? How would I close it again after opening with the app? I also have 4 contacts on my gate’s open button in the remote fob.
I would buy this Multi-switch instead: amzn.to/3aJAXet and follow this video to solder open button to one-for opening, and solder close button to another - for closing. And then- just name them-OPEN Gate and the other one- CLOSE Gate. You may want to watch my other video for help with this multi-switch-HERE: ua-cam.com/video/MypwEcB5nT8/v-deo.html Hope this helps, Todd PS. If the same button on your fob/controller Opens and Closes the gate, then you only need the single eWelink (NOT the Multi-one). You'll just have to active the ONE button to close and open.
this worked like a charm. solved a problem i had for 5 years. thank you. Do have a question. My Alexa is recognizing as a switch so I have to say "Alexa turn on the gate". How did you get it to understand your "Echo OPEN gate"?
Carlos, Glad to hear about your success! That's an easy FIX.... Just open the Alexa app and press the menu button at the top "left-side" of the app and select ROUTINES. From there, you can make ALEXA have a command from the exact phrase that you want it to like " CLOSE GATE" or "OPEN GATE".... you can find these directions in some of my other ALEXA videos :) Thanks for the comment. Todd
Great video, have just done exactly the same, the module set up was a little different 3 years down the line, you have to set the inching/jogging parameters via the mobile phone app now, but otherwise a great way to Alexa enable a 20+ year old proprietary gate automation system.
It seems that the little WiFi module could connect directly with the Normally Open terminals on the gate actuator, eliminating the need for a clicker. No? I really need to make my gate WiFi enabled so I can access the app on my iPhone or Apple Watch (would be even better) when I pull up to the gate on my motorcycle. Alexa operation could be handy to open the gate from inside the house. But I'm really wanting to make it easier to get my motorcycle inside the gate. Suggestions?
Bud, It was good to find this down to earth video so I didn't have to try and explain (meaning, more than likely, doing it for them) to friends/family, so thank you. We have a similar set up with a 4 Channel module. It has a nicely finished plastic housing making it more aesthetically pleasing, tidy and professional ... for those with knit picking partners ;-) You were lucky to have a HUGE remote and button on the PCB, so your shaky hands could manage it. One of our remotes is tiny and has 4 buttons, with 2 required to be soldered into ... now that was a chore.
Thank you for your comments Darren. I really appreciate it! and I hope your set-up makes you as happy as it does for all of us in our household :) Todd
Great video. I am working on something very similar so this is very helpful. How do keep the gate open longer if you want to ? I just installed new driveway gates so getting used to it.
Hey Fairplayer1, thanks :) Our driveway gates are controlled with our landline phone by pressing certain numbers and the #. This is how we can hold it open. But our gate also has 4 stop motion sensors (2-outside the gate and 2-inside the gate. Usually I'll just throw a bag or bucket over one of the outside sensors if I want to keep it open for a while. I have a camera outside pointed at the gate so if I'm expecting a pizza delivery I watch the camera and just yell at ALEXA to "open gate" when I see the delivery pull-up.
Depending on your gate opener. If it has a CTC input like mine, it works just like the remote. Push the button a second time to stop it and hold it open. Open just cycles the opener. CTC is like having the remote so you can stop it before it completely opens and it stays open. Mine are ghost controls gate opener.
Thank you for this.. One could deduce that if I had a 2 button remote (garage and gate) that if I buy 2 switches and name them different things in the app, I could use that 1 remote to control them both?
Yes, but the remote would have to be close enough to both openers. For the garage, just wire it in to the wall switch that opens and closes the door (or where those wires connect into the opener). No need for remote.
Great tutorial. I hooked one up to the wall control wire on a garage door door and another to my gate wiring inside the box (had to get the one with 7~32 volt input). Works like a champ. Didn't even look at the instructions (they were too small to read anyway). You may have covered it but when the bottom light is on, the unit is not momentary, but on or off. With that bottom light off, it is a momentary switch (maybe a second or so). Its just like I am pushing the button on the wall or remote. GREAT!!!
TVR 101, That's great to hear! I am just loving mine, especially the Gate one - I can just tell Alexa to open the gate without even getting out of my recliner :)
Hi Neil, I don't think so. With my TV lift...I paired my TV lift to a BOND unit to activate it with Alexa and other smart switches. Here's the BOND, I have: amzn.to/3wjIGJv -Todd
Hey todd, really nice video man! Nice green screen effects and nice transitions! Also a really nice project, wish I could try this out myself but I'm missing the gate and garage door part!
Hi! Amazing vid! I just managed to do this off the back off this vid - thanks! One thing I can’t seem to suss though is, saying ‘Okay google open the garage! It will turn on the ewelink and open the garage, but if I say okay google close garage door, it wants to turn off the WiFi module and this won’t prompt the garage to close (work-around being saying ‘open garage door’ to both open and close it). I have an IFTTT set up but no joy. Any pointers??
You need to setup a "Routine" within Google Home app. Open Google Home app and select Routines, then manage routines, "+" to add a routine. Add a routine command, such as "Close Garage Door", then add "action"...such as "Activate Garage Door". and save the command. Now do the same for the command "Open Garage Door". Hope that helps. Todd
I’ve been trying to figure out how to make a chicken coop automatic door opener controlled with wifi. Do you think this is something that is possible? To be able to open and close the door.
I'm still struggling getting it to connect to wifi and when it can get it added to the app it's offline. I bought another switch to make sure it wasn't a bad board, but no luck. Iv been in software for 20 years so you can imagine my frustration with not getting it to connect. Anyone qith suggestions are welcome. I have tried on two different wifi networks. Mine and a friend's. Turnwd off 5G, all security even created a guest net work.. I can get it to connect to the router(s) 2 different ones but with no wifi.. Cheers 🍻
How do you make Echo to "Open" the gate. I've 4CH SONOFF and using ewelink too and Echo recognised it as a switch. I could only ask it to "Alexa, turn on the gate" to open and close the gate. 😂
Ridwan Rashid Hello, to do this open your Alexa app and from the menu select Routines. Now you can type anything you want to say to activate any device in your Alexa network, just select the device you want to respond to your new Routine command :) It's really nice to have the Routine feature!
Thanks Todd. Your assistance is highly appreciated. It worked very well. Now I can ask Alexa to open and close my Driveway gate thank you. Your videos are amazing. Thank you once again. God bless !
Yes how change the work on to open I did one gate and gate works amazing I need to change the work on to open now can I do te that from Alexa or ewelink
Hello Nick, If you have it working on both gates, one for each gate??? Just go into your ALEXA App and choose Routines. This is where you can assign your switches a talking command to operate from. All you do is type out the words that you want to say and choose the thing you want the switch to perform and select the switch and save. In your case, if you have 2 gates (switches), I would go into Alexa app and go to Routines and type a command that says "OPEN LEFT GATE" and choose that switch (and select command OPEN), Then "CLOSE LEFT GATE" then choose that switch (and select command CLOSE)...and then for your 2nd gate...type a command "CLOSE RIGHT GATE" and choose that switch (and select the CLOSE command) ....and then do the OPEN as well on the RIGHT gate....
OR...You could make a Routine and type "OPEN GATES", then select BOTH Gate Devices and choose the command (OPEN). And do the same way to CLOSE...set up the Routine command to close them both!
Hello from the UK, works perfectly, found the ittt widget that was the only thing missing from your vid. Otherwise big thanks for selflessly posting this for others!!!. There is an ittt widget to trigger the EWeLink based on a geo fence you can choose, so as you arrive near home the door opens......
That's really cool. One thing that worries me about the gate automatically opening using proximity is accidentally letting a pet run loose if they happen to be in the driveway for some reason.
Hello Jaime, I'm sure it would be similar to connecting the eWeLink module to a garage door set-up. First you would have to make a jumper wire to test the possible contacts within your gate housing. Just watch one of my other videos - controlling garage with eWeLink. I would try to follow those sames step :) Todd
NOTICE TO EVERYONE FOLLOWING this SmartGate Video... Last week my SmartGate control with eWeLINK stopped working. Today I got the chance to take it down and examine it...I thought maybe I would have to reprogram it or something disappointing :( BUT, GOOD NEWS!! I discovered the battery was DEAD in my remote. I just replaced the battery and it worked just fine AGAIN...NO Reprogramming or nothing! I guess I was so impressed with this NEW Smart gate opener and used it so much, that I ran down the battery :)
tw HomeShow Thanks for the reply, I have the wifi switch and the remote control right next to my router. The wifi switch clicks when i press the button on my phone but it seems like it doesnt send the signal to the garage remote. Im thinking the solder isnt connected properly? My garage is a rolling code, but that shouldnt affect anything since the idea of the wifi switch simulates a click. Thanks again..
That's AWESOME! YES, I use my smart gate opener ALL the time (for over a year, now)! I have even used it remotely from work, by opening my ALEXA phone app and press the button and speak "open Gate" for workers or anyone that calls me wanting to enter the property for a schedule outdoor job and stuff. Works GREAT! If we have dinner delivered and they call from outside the gate - I just start walking to my garage door from inside the house and say "open Gate" and by the time I get out there, they have pulled into my driveway where I greet them :)
Place your Alexa just inside your home. NOT like where I showed it here for demonstration. Mount it right inside at you nearest outlet. When you prepare to go out to your garage....just say "Open Garage Door"....it's simple :)

So you can control your gate thru the app button if you don't have Echo?
YES.
Genius! Thanks for the share. Didn’t even know this could be done!
Do you know how to close a household door via alexa/google? I need to open up the door manually though.
So u can open your gate anywhere as long as your phone have wifi acccess?

Thank you for this.. One could deduce that if I had a 2 button remote (garage and gate) that if I buy 2 switches and name them different things in the app, I could use that 1 remote to control them both?
Yes, but the remote would have to be close enough to both openers. For the garage, just wire it in to the wall switch that opens and closes the door (or where those wires connect into the opener). No need for remote.
Great tutorial. I hooked one up to the wall control wire on a garage door door and another to my gate wiring inside the box (had to get the one with 7~32 volt input). Works like a champ.
Would be a ton easier to use an RF bridge?
Is possible to password protect that? Something like "Echo, open gate" "What is the pass?" "7589" "Opening gate..."
Love this video
Thank you!
Great to hear! I like the GEO Fence idea, thanks for sharing.
That's really cool. One thing that worries me about the gate automatically opening using proximity is accidentally letting a pet run loose if they happen to be in the driveway for some reason.
How would it be done if i do have access to my gate box??
Hello Jaime, I'm sure it would be similar to connecting the eWeLink module to a garage door set-up. First you would have to make a jumper wire to test the possible contacts within your gate housing. Just watch one of my other videos - controlling garage with eWeLink. I would try to follow those sames step :) Todd
Oh yeah, and make sure your WiFi will work out to your gate.
How is it connected from car
Thanks
Thank you Gordon. I hope everything works out great for you and your setup! -Todd
Hardwire the remote. I’d like to see that video
Nice video.. but having trouble as it only works for about 5 minutes and then the remote doesnt seem to get the signal.. any ideas?
@@kennyh8112 Maybe check the wifi signal you are getting near the unit. It might be too weak?

Thanks for the reply,
I have the wifi switch and the remote control right next to my router.
The wifi switch clicks when i press the button on my phone but it seems like it doesnt send the signal to the garage remote. Im thinking the solder isnt connected properly? My garage is a rolling code, but that shouldnt affect anything since the idea of the wifi switch simulates a click. Thanks again..
Next video tip: How to add a battery sensor to this setup to alert you via the phone app
Dude it’s not sending a zap to the remote. It’s a relay switch that closes, which completes the circuit on the remote.
its alot easier if you have access to the main panel
What if my gate is 5 houses away?
Good job, so satisfying to have this work on the first try. Has it been reliable?
That's AWESOME! YES, I use my smart gate opener ALL the time (for over a year, now)! I have even used it remotely from work, by opening my ALEXA phone app and press the button and speak "open Gate" for workers or anyone that calls me wanting to enter the property for a schedule outdoor job and stuff. Works GREAT! If we have dinner delivered and they call from outside the gate - I just start walking to my garage door from inside the house and say "open Gate" and by the time I get out there, they have pulled into my driveway where I greet them :)
Could I use the same system to unlock my car using a spare remote, can this app be password protected
Pro tip, solder cools down almost instantly.
See RFAreas Gate solution. It is very interesting.
What will happen if some burglar shout on alexa to open the door. will alexa follow.
Does it have voice recognition
Place your Alexa just inside your home. NOT like where I showed it here for demonstration. Mount it right inside at you nearest outlet. When you prepare to go out to your garage....just say "Open Garage Door"....it's simple :)
