How to cook Scottish Langoustines

  • I was invited onto Jamie and Jimmy's Friday Night Feast show C4 where we met Ian and Kenny, two lovely Scottish fishermen. I learned that the fisherman trade is in danger of going out of business and that if more people in the UK ate Langoustines fresh from Scotland it would massively help. So here is my little video which I hope helps spread some awareness. Instead of buying king prawns from a million miles away, give Langos a try!     Shouldn’t pinch the tail, it squashes the meat and leaves the tail squishy. Better way is to break the pointed sections of shell outwards and away from the meat section by section. It’s a bit rough on your thumbs but it’s worth it. Leaves a far firmer tail with a better texture. My dad was a fisherman and I grew up on fresh fish, shellfish, lobsters and prawns (langoustine).

    I get mine locally so they are fresh, I hate frozen shellfish. I steam them, no salt needed. They are gorgeous!

    Do they ship to the U.S. I wonder? They look quite yummy. As i'm several hundred miles from the ocean I have no fishmongers to go to.

    How will they go out of business when what is not sold in the uk gets sent to Europe?
    Or is it just a profit drive as they can get more ££ by selling to the uk?

    Are they expensive? Compared to other similar shellfish like tiger prawns or lobster?

      +John Lucas hello there, that's a great question! So they are cheaper than king / tiger prawns :) and if they are fresh and the best quality they'd be close to lobster, so it depends where you get them from really! In general cheaper! - yay!

    Is the head meat edible? Seems such a waste to discard it.
