How to Shell and Eat A Whole Lobster

- The beauty here is in the breakdown-if you're just eating the claws and tail, you're definitely missing out on some meat. Here, we walk you through the steps of getting everything you possibly can out of a whole cooked lobster, using a nutcracker-the tool most commonly offered in restaurants-to get at the meat. If you still doubt that picking through every last crevice in the body is really worth it, just wait until you see how much we get out of ours. It's nearly a whole extra tail's worth of meat.

If I'm correct that stuff is actually digestive tract waste (fecal matter) also known as poop 😲🤢 from the lobster. The FDA warns to not eat the green stuff because of serious illness.
EDIT: Never mind what I said previously, I just found out that it's crab fat and it acts as the liver and pancreas to filter out the toxic substances in the crustacean and it poses a health risk to people if it's eaten 🤢😷.
It's edible, but slightly poisonous.
James Bossman Caldwell III don’t listen to them... it’s actually one of my favourite parts of lobster! I’m from a fishing community. A lot of people love the eggs as well
@@jeremymanuel8136 the eggs are irrelevant
They're not toxic and eating something your whole life doesn't make you an Authority so don't give bad advice like "don't listen to people who are paid to ensure the food we eat is safe listen to the fisherman" (no conflict of interest there)

Yo, why don’t u eat the shell? The crispness is a great contrast to the mostly soft lobster meat.
Its delicius when shell gets in but it wont get melted in stomach .That means when it gets to poop it... good luck with sharpness of that shell in butt...

I have a twin sister and when we were very young our parents would boil the live Maine lobsters and mom would dish out the tomalley. No matter how careful she was Barb and I always felt the other had more. Even today only the tail meat pleases my palate more than the tomalley. Bravo to one of the few hosts I have seen who knows where what I call a secret cache of lobster meat is. I wish I could remember when, where, and how I learned about the meat found in the pockets inside the body but I am glad you showed other lobster eaters where it is.

Grew up in Maine eating lobsters and steamed clams. Learning early to find every piece of meat in the tail body and claws. Live in Montana now and miss going down to the docks and buying fresh from the boats.
Use a rolling pin to get leg meat out. Start at the feet and roll and you get this whole lobster leg meat. Sp sweet. When chew on the legs you aren't really getting all the delicious meat, mostly juice.

You got all the head meat, but forgot about the tail flippers! There is sweet, gossamer meat inside. Another trick for the legs is to line up three at a time and roll the meat out with a rolling pin (or wine bottle) Next you should do a female for the demo so you could show and discuss the roe. Also super delicious, with a different texture, I usually ask for a female so I can get the roe. The females have smaller, feathers in the nethers.
Good explanation tho, at home (Nova Scotia) we use the back of a knife to break the claws, and the knuckle meat is always the hardest to get into - but we also either bash with the back a knife, or cut through it with the knife - have to be careful tho.. those spines hurt. Uncle and Granddad were lobster fishermen, I know my stuff.
Overall, great video highlighting how to shell a lobstrosity.
Aren’t seeders supposed to be thrown back ? Lol
Good call on the flipper meat!
I LOVE THE WAY YOU EXPLAINED THIS
This is the most satisfying wor when the whole meat just popped out clean from the shell
This video makes me wanna eat it so bad it looks so delicious 🤤
It’s hard to tell from the video but the fins on the end of the tail are also really good and I couldn’t tell if he got them. I also would have showed how much meat you get from the legs as in my humble opinion are almost the best part of the lobster. Also as as side note you want to add lemon, hot pepper flakes, a dash of tobasco , and a dash of pepper to the butter. Trust me you will love it.
Funny, some lobsters I've eaten had meat in the fins, others didn't.
Very much helpful and worth watching
I'm glad that he added digging and picking it apart is the fun part, cuz it'd my favorite part. I like working for it 🤷♀️
Alton Brown had a great tip for the small legs. Cut the shell open at the first knuckle, closest to where it attached to the body, then lay it down with the claw close to you, and run a rolling pin over it, pushing away from you. All the meat in the leg will squeeze out like a little french fry. If you are in a restaurant, you could probably use a glass or a salt shaker.
I learned that from Emeril Lagasse. I wonder who taught that trick to who. Alton Brown is full of good ideas. The rolling pin thing really works.
Robert J. Holtz well, Gordon Ramsay's been doing it that way for years too. Maybe it's a culinary school technique...

The green stuff is stomach, dust etc which carries parasites.so we shouldn't eat it.same with mammals and birds that we eat
Awesome. At the 0:15 mark, I saw all I needed to see to know that I’ve been doing it right for decades only eating the claws, knuckles, and tails
Without a doubt the best demonstration on how to break down a lobster for eating.
Don't forget to split the tail vertically or horizontally and wipe out the "vein" (i.e. intestine).

You Forgot about the legs, you can use a rolling pin to squeeze out the meat. Even though it's not much it's taste`s so good
Lobster should ALWAYS be eaten freshly cooked and as it has cooled down to about room temp-never cold. Then you dip the flesh into clarified melted lightly salter butter-no fancy sauce or mayo.
Mmmmmm....
Why never cold? Chilled lobster is incredibly delicious. Ever had a chilled seafood tower? I love a hot lobster with drawn butter but chilled lobster is not to be missed. All shellfish is extremely good chilled.
