In 2017 i bought a 85 CR500 with full intentions of making a AF, but then I bought a complete AF. Now I've come to realize that it needs to be restored to full glory of the 80s. Maybe a resto-mod with better suspension for my old year old butt.
I know it's a 125 but I got my 1999 CR 125 back and done a restoration on it COMPLETELY IN THE ORIGINAL FRAME. That's the way it shows it's REAL VALUE ! A PIECE OF BIG BORE HISTORY STILL ALIVE ! YOU KNOW WHAT U R DOING and you I know will do the right thing. But my 2cents is just restored it and ride it the way it was built. Thanks from kentucky
It would be awesome to see it done with a rebuilt suspension and new tires era correct plastics and race it at big bore that way. As long as we get an upload a week that is awesome and we appreciate it!
Full restoration with some slight mods like gold rims, exhaust, carburetor, HRC engine covers, suspension updates etc... WP rear shock is really good period correct modification and Showa cartridge forks from -88 are direct swap and bike will handle totally different
@@TopRevs My YZ 465 needs the most attention as it's a total basket case. So it's going to take the longest to work on. But my 1976 IT400 on the other hand, though rough is mostly there and it runs for the most part. But like any 40+ year old bike it is missing stuff to make it rideable. Since it's the most complete it's going to be my main focus. Being a first year bike it's hard to find vital parts for so NOS OE parts are out of the question. If anything, it missing things leaves it open to make it custom. Minus cutting it up of course, I will not hack up old bikes. :)
I would restore it with up-to-date parts, but keep the original frame, new plastics, proper seat. The 85-87s are good looking bikes. I have an 86 CR 250. The only thing I wish were different on my 86 would be to have a nice disk brake on the back rather than the drum. 87 was the first year for disks front and back on the CRs.
rat cr500 ,give it love, but keep it looking like it came from the tip thanks for all you do on your channel happy new year from Perth Western Australia
I say restore this bike! You drove 1,000 miles to get this bike, that's true determination if i've ever seen it. I subscribed to that. You already got this bike to run a little, you got this.
Do whatever you want.... your bikes to play with.... getting it all together in the end would be nice...as i remember those bikes racing against me...😂 🇨🇦🤓👍
Dont restore it. It took almost 40 years to achieve the look it has. I my opinion, if it was me, don't paint the frame, just clean and polish the all of the existing paint, fix the drain plug, polish all bare metal, replace the tires and plastics and let it ride. Also maybe use modern suspension on the 1985 frame. Tats a badass vintage bike and my opinion is to let her show her scare and what she's been through. Also if you do a full resto then you may be afraid to ride it as hard and or in certain conditions. Anyway, congrats on the bike, can't wait to see what she turns into. 😊
Leave it rough, Ride it rough! Fix the suspension, grease the linkage, fix the brakes and ride the Dickens out of it! Impressive to see your 12 year old on it!
Hey brother congratulations on getting the beast running great work. Give it a thought but finish getting some plastic on it and how about offering it to someone who is well deserved and doesn’t have a 500 and would appreciate that bike so much
Hey side note grind drain plug flat to case the use lrg easy out drill hole and remove if that doesn’t work finish drilling hole through old plug tap and install a little smaller plug in new hole you will always get almost all the oil to drain
Pretty cool find. Get a Back fender on it, you will get clobbered by spit up rock's on that CR500. Don't do burnout's, it just wreck's bike's not worth it.
Clint how's it going I hope you make an 1985 Bailey replica HRC bike . Now I know the chassis is older but how bout even calling it your version of an HRC works bike but with a modern twist so like a resto mod reinforced frame with new as possible updated suspension and of course rear disc because it,s before the production rule better brakes wheels but the look is still 1985 maybe gold wheels ?
Honestly, I think just a nice frame off restoration would be good bikes are getting too done up and sold for too much I think just a nice running bike would be nice.
AF it for now while you restore the OG frame/roller with crf front master but keep it lowkey, like make it an "OE+" 85 with new inverted forks like KYB SSS and some gold takasagos 😁
It’s 1985, a young Clint Lund see’s a brand new cr 500 on the show room floor and thinks that’s the duck’s nut’s. Do it for the nuts. Make a CR great again .
restore but like restore to a used working bike. i mean i have seen people make completly new resto builds... i would just love to see atleast if been restored to a presentable bike first and then see? dont make it a museum bike all i would say :)
My goal if I ever got a 500 was to not make it so nice I wouldn't ride it. Make it a nice rider where if it gets dumped it's not that big of a deal. All oem rider
Strip it down and build the newest sick 500 with best parts you can find. Only way its not original anymore and waist of money. Built race 500 we need.
That 85 deserves a proper restoration, ya know it makes sense, 👍🏻
yup
I feel that the AF movement has become to well known you never see full restorations anymore. It would be awesome to see a restoration done.
Unpopular opinion. "AF converting" destroys these old school bikes. They are MUCH more badass in their original condition.
I agree 💯
Why would you want to run a bike with drum brakes and tiny forks?
Make it look like a proper barn find with worn period correct sponsor decals etc would look killer!

Go with option #1!!! This beast deserves to be restored to all its glory!!! I am so freaking jealous!!!
Worthy of a full restoration
Full restoration back to 85 would be my choice.😊
Amazing bike classic and rare these 500 2 smokers love the kx500s absolute animals fun but also scarey 😂😂
One of your 500’s should be a mint restoration from ground up, like fresh off the showroom floor!
I run all my old bikes at 32:1 as i did back in the day
I know it's a 125 but I got my 1999 CR 125 back and done a restoration on it COMPLETELY IN THE ORIGINAL FRAME. That's the way it shows it's REAL VALUE ! A PIECE OF BIG BORE HISTORY STILL ALIVE ! Got a great base to start with, knock it out Bud!
Be nice to watch a 100% genuine build with original parts

Loved those years and bikes I have an 450 that’s fun
It's fun watching you do all of these CR500 builds. I'll just be happy for when I'm able to get around to working on my IT400 and YZ465. 😁
Nothing more cool than a good looking Yz 465, and Cr 500😉

That Indian clip !! On point with the nose any one sound make kicking a 500 😂
Ahem 😤 " Native Indigenous American " !!
🇨🇦🤓👍
rat cr500 ,give it love, but keep it looking like it came from the tip
thanks for all you do on your channel
happy new year from Perth Western Australia

On the right Facebook group that’s a 10,000$ cr500. Lightly used, 95% restored. ProCircuit pipe, new top end, custom quick drain out the clutch cover.
Shocks worked fine on all my old 500s
I wanna see you rebuild that old suspension and get some plastic on the 500 and ride it how it is!
Keep it aged - sounds awesome
FULL RESTO all the way. Its all there. might as well preserve it.
Good game plan Clint AF while resto! Happy holidays to you and yours!
I like the temporary AF then return it the original 85 chassis!
my 10th year of racing 1985 !!
🇨🇦🤓👍
I like the idea of letting its age show

Restore it to the original condition! It would look so much better with the period correct plastic, blue CR seat, gold rims, etc.
Leave it rough, Ride it rough! Fix the suspension, grease the linkage, fix the brakes and ride the Dickens out of it! Impressive to see your 12 year old on it!
That AF Is solid and fun to ride throw it in there while we build the 85 out 🔥🔥🔥
Grampa crusty lives!!!! Heck ya❤
AF & then full resto-mod!?
I would like to see you Do a franken-500 with nothing but spare parts bikes!
Imo clean it up get the plastic etc like you mentioned and fix it up like it was raced in 85 !! Nothing like a classic well built cr 500
Happy New Year everyone, please don’t A F it just restore it 👍🙏🏁🇬🇧
Keep her original looking 😎👍
Being as it needs so much for a restoration, she'd be getting a new chassis.
Fender and fix suspension. Run it. Drain plug shouldn't be too bad to grind down and get old bolt out ( jb weld? ) helicoil it
If the motor is tight, just reveal the suspension and put some plastics on it and tires
@LUND MX restore that beast these bikes are fewer and far between, give that beast what it deserves
Resto mod it, I mean by that fix things it need and keep its original old school feel and look as a well loved used bike
Absolute bog standard resto . The 85 will be one of the most expensive no doubt .
Hey brother congratulations on getting the beast running great work. Give it a thought but finish getting some plastic on it and how about offering it to someone who is well deserved and doesn’t have a 500 and would appreciate that bike so much

Like you said you can do both. Put the engine in the AF while you restore the 1985 and then put the engine back in afterwards. Best of both worlds.
Think you got the right idea. Not a lot of 85s restored left on the planet. Can always throw an 88 and above back in the AF frame. "Nice find"!
Do some suspension work and enjoy it maybe put some plastic on but a period correct well used 500 for me
Put the motor in the new frame. Thats badass
Keep it original, kinda a cool change!
I would think going into an af would have a lot of vibration in it,,just a thought
Pretty cool find. Get a Back fender on it, you will get clobbered by spit up rock's on that CR500. Don't do burnout's, it just wreck's bike's not worth it.
Some fresh plastics, shocks, a different muffler. And run it.
Restore it to its 1985 prime!
Dude you have your 12 year old riding on a 500?! That's crazy!
95% original build but with some new goodies
Resto mod for sure.
Restoration, you will get another motor for the AF
Full restoration please.
Bad ass! My vote is to make it a modern bike with the AF!🤘🏽
Af so over done, EVERY af cracks, these 500 motors are meant for those solid steel frames
Do baja 1000 style bike!! Big bright lights big gas tank. Just an overpowered built like a tank desert racer!!
Friggen transmission is slippin.
I’m thinking they stripped the threads out the drain plug …
Just give grampa a new set of pants and let him run
Almost 50. Gotta restore it
Full restoration
It's OK to be somewhat timid on CR 500. The bike can kill you at any time. It absolutely demands respect
I think his 12 year son is braver than most adults who attempt to ride one. :)
Full resto!!!
It’s 1985, a young Clint Lund see’s a brand new cr 500 on the show room floor and thinks that’s the duck’s nut’s. Do it for the nuts. Make a CR great again .
He wasn't able to see out of the Testicles in 85' 😂
🇨🇦🤓👍
Full resto
God bless
Resto mod it. Modern day spin on a classic big bore.
lets gooooo
It rips!
Full on Resto
the basis is there !! just rebuild it !!!!
Sounds like its running a bit rich
👍
Need to find new cases first then restore it but not crazy just period correct be nice rider
Make it safe to ride and leave it alone.
Just clean her up and let's go
Only clicking because I'm 26 again!!!
Tweak it a little, ride the wheels off, send cars and camera a video of how to ride it, ENJOY🙂
Af it make it a reliable rideable modern monster unless you have another cr500af
restore but like restore to a used working bike.
i mean i have seen people make completly new resto builds... i would just love to see atleast if been restored to a presentable bike first and then see?
dont make it a museum bike all i would say :)
Restore and the engine swap
Option 2 and just send it
Make it right
My goal if I ever got a 500 was to not make it so nice I wouldn't ride it. Make it a nice rider where if it gets dumped it's not that big of a deal. All oem rider
Throw plastics on and send it.
Leave it oem. Get some era plastics and leave it a barn find!
Back to original. AFs are cool but The novelty has wore off .
I'm sure it will look the dogs bollocks when april arrives
Let age speak.
Strip it down and build the newest sick 500 with best parts you can find. Only way its not original anymore and waist of money. Built race 500 we need.
Rebuild everything but leave the plastics
