Cold steel has basically the same friction as when it's warm. The winter-problems for railroads are frozen switches/points and large quantities of snow. Basically: water is bad, no matter if liquid or frozen.

    • @IONATVS
      @IONATVS 3 роки тому +10

@@henryfeng840 ice doesn’t make new cracks, it widens existing ones. Most materials, including solid ice and liquid water get smaller/denser as they get colder, but because the crystal structures of ice have holes in them when water freezes it actually gets much less dense very quickly. Thus if there’s water in a crack when it freezes, it suddenly gets bigger while everything around it is getting smaller, and that naturally forces the crack wider. And in general single objects of uniform material shrinking uniformly, like a metal rail, isn’t really a problem, it becomes a problem when they’re mechanically joined (bolted) to things that also expand or shrink with temperature but at a different rate (such as the earth) in different directions (such as another section of rail that’s also bolted to the ground so wants to shrink towards its center of mass), or at different temperatures in different areas. And that’s exacerbated because the strength of the materials can vary dramatically with temp too, so a weight or hammer strike or tensile stress from being bolted in the ground weirdly that they could easily take at room temp might be too much when it’s cold.

Just FYI, that glitchy texture effect has a specific name. It's called Z-Fighting. Multiple 3D objects with textures on the same plane will attempt to display at the same time. Z-Buffer does not allow this so the buffer instead flips rapidly between the textures. If the render engine is setup properly it'll automatically offset one of the objects(so one texture is covering the other) by just a hair to stop the Z-fighting effect.

The Engines should be parked with their chimneys aligned with the ones on the shed as they help with draft when heating an engine from cold. Oh and it's true you blow the cylinder cocks when turning the engine off, but also after prolonged periods of inaction like at a station, as the cylinders might cool, water in cylinders are a really bad thing. water doesn't compress so if there's water in the cylinder when starting without blowing the cocks, a pocket of water might warp the pistons or crack the cylinders, and then you have a very big tea kettle instead of a train engine.

If you drive the trains FORWARD onto the turntable, you can immediately grab the turntable handle and run it around 180 degrees. This lets you then have the handle next to you next to the shed when lining them up. It just makes it a lot more convenient rather than trying to look around the train and guess when it's lined up.

Possibly a Heisler running in reverse (With the railcars coupled to the front of the Heisler) and a Mogul/Class 70 in the front. On flat ground, Hop in the front Mogul/Class 70 and you have quicker speed and when you need power, the Heisler is your friend. What do you think about hooking the turntable into your second shunt yard? It's trivial to build a second entrance to them. Just hook the rail up next to the rail that you linked the table to.
That would also allow you to drive your engines out without turning them a full 180°. Or to back them in without turning them 180°.

Ok, some ideas for making your rail yard look and function more like an actual rail yard:
    1. In real railyards, the through-tracks off of the main are only used to assemble outgoing trains and disassemble incoming trains. You only need a couple of these. Your storage tracks can all be dead-ends because you'd realistically be using a small switching locomotive (Porter, ALCO/Cooke 2-4-2T, Baldwin 0-6-0, etc. - in your case, Betsy and Betsy 2) to sort rolling stock.
    2. You should have a firewood depot and a watertower on a lead out from the turntable. This way they're both close to the engine shed but they're not blocking the main access track to the turntable.
    3. For your inbound and outbound tracks, you should have a separate switching lead so that switching operations don't interfere with incoming and outgoing trains.
That being said, there is a kind of rail yard that uses your system of having fully assembled trains on separate, double-sided tracks - it's called a staging yard. Staging yards aren't used on full-size railroads because there's no reason to store fully assembled trains on those, but they're used on model railroads so that trains can "travel" to locations beyond the boundaries of the layout, and are often also used to hide a continuous run on layouts that would otherwise be point-to-point. Additionally, they're used to store trains that aren't in use on the layout at all.

Betsy is truly a beast. She survived the full speed downhill parcour from the iron mine down into the valley without derailing. Keep her as she is for quick support and rescue missions. The caboose might fit better to Betsy 2, wich could be used as a kind of track building / maintenance train. A red light at the top of the caboose would be a signal for a closed track, a section you're working on or something. Could be great, when the devs implement night time.

An idea for the future, build a engine shed at each of the industries and house a Betsy at each as the shunter for those locations (logging #1, sawmill #1 etc) when you have multiple people playing online and shunt yards at each as well.
So they can shunt loaded wagons ready for you to arrive and the take the empties from you and you pick up the loaded ones.
    Saves you waiting around.

a better layout for the Roundhouse set up using the Sheds is to place a shed, then place a single open track. another shed and another track. repeat as needed until you have a suitable area for storing Engines.
also place your Engine Servicing facilities Water Tower, Sanding Tower, and Fueling Depot. on the approach track to the turntable.
as you take an engine out, you can make sure it's fully fueled, watered and sanded for work.
somewhere nearby should be the Caboose Track for storing the Cabooses ready to be placed onto a train.

Hey Kan, don’t know how this would look but what if you did the sheds in two parallel lines like buildings on the side of the road, with their doors facing towards the opposite side. Had a line of turntables with maybe a normal track piece in between or something. (Match the sheds up with the turn tables so you have essentially one table servicing two sheds or four doors.) Then just leave all of the turn tables straight, turn the specific one for your shed, put the train on the table and turn it, drive it out. Then you could have like one shed at the very end of the line, kinda like an uppercase Pi in Greek Π with like the service line going down the middle?
Like I said, don’t know if you could pull off the angles or not but could prob fit like 10 or so sheds that way if you needed to upgrade. You have enough land to prob pull it off. Just a thought.

As a test a while back (before many of the physics patches - so it may not behave exactly the same) I drove Betsy VERY slowly off the end of the rail so her wheels were in the dirt. I did this slowly enough that the engine did not bounce or lose it's alignment with the track. I then backed it back on to the rails. The first (back) wheels were a bit stubborn to climb back on to the rails but it only took about 40% regulator. The front wheels followed with no problem. Unless the physics have been changed drastically I doubt the difference in rail height at the turntable will stop any of the engines. The Porter has the smallest wheels of all the locomotives so if Betsy can climb the full height of the rail, the others should have no problem.

You have room to actually build more of the engine sheds opposite of the ones you already have...so in essence the turntable would be surrounded by sheds. The lip should actually be the other way, you want your engines to drop onto the turntable from the engine shed and lead tracks, i.e. the track leading to the turntable and the tracks into the engine sheds should all be a little higher than the turntable.

Hey, Kan, the heisler can go faster. You can pull the reverser back, to like, 50%, and then try experimenting with the regulator. The reason the heisler wheelslips so easily is because it is too powerful compared to its tractive effort. So if you pull the reverser further behind than 100, you have reduced power and increased speed, and this may allow you to get the regulator to 100. This applies to all engines. You can still have the reverser at 100 on inclines, where you need more power.

    • @entity-bl5og

Pairing the Eureka with a cordwood/flatcar or caboose/brake-van and Betsy would be a pretty OP but simple pairing for empty-haul routes (one-way loaded/difficult and an easy return-leg)
    [Caboose]-[train]-[train]-[train]-[] >>Uphill>>
-If that monstrosity can't pull it, a class 70 probably won't either. Just be sure to top-off Betsy's water, 100% the Eureka and go gentle on Betsy's reg.
That'd keep Betsy relevant even on medium-haul runs, and the Porter-2 for logs-to-saw runs. Mogul for medium long-hauls, and the Heisler for ultra-grunt.

the class 70 works on the turntable with the tender, but you have to hang off the front wheels. It looks goofy but it works fine

Hey kan big fan of the railroad online videos first time commenting... I love your content keep it up.. I think you should stock 2 or 3 betsy's on that same line in the shed so if need be you have more than the one on hand...I know your trying to grind for the other locos but just my thought on the betsy shed

Should have the turntable handle facing the sheds so you can easily see the tracks to line up.

With the staging yard or behind the engine house u should build a Caboose track where u can just park a bunch of them together like on the real railroads back in the day

I have got to get this game it looks so much fun and great idea for a makeshift roundhouse, reminds me of one of those recreational railways (nostalgia)! Though maybe one day we’ll get an actual roundhouse in the game

Kan probably the reason why the Eureka isn't working is you probably haven't turned the handbrake off on the tender. Try that. All the tender engines need it.

  • @GarrieMcLaws

Tender could be disconnected if you put them in backward using Betsy
Using the engine that matched the tender park the tender on the turntable and disconnect it. Then rotate the table to align with Betsy with the back of the Tender, put Betsy on the turntable then continue rotating around so that Betsy can push the tender in, back out ot the table and go back home. Then put the engine in the bay.
When taking the engine and tender out, pull the engine out and past the turn table. Then put Betsy on the turntable and have pull the tender back onto the turntable rotate to send her home leaving the tender on the turntable then back the engine up to collect it's tender.
I think you would have better luck lining up the turntable if you used arm from the "out/exit" side of the turntable when going to put a train on it. Since there is no train on it you can see if it lines up then lining it up to exit you have unobstructed view.

When you were building your roundhouse how come you didn't have a track exactly opposite your feed track? Then your longer locomotive could have driven straight through without issue and parked in the shed.
