I can't wait to watch this video! Finally, someone besides the CEO playing a crosscut! I love Ken Haas and Greg Koch but it's really nice to see someone besides one of them doing a full demo of a Reverend model.
I love Reverend Guitars! My favorite brand. I currently have five and have had several other models in the past. I have been quite happy with each one I have ever had in my possession.

I personally love the set-neck models that utilize a tiltback 6 in line headstock. That would be the Contender models, a couple of the Reeves Gabriels Signature models and the Tricky Gomez models. Plus their set-neck guitars are built with a three piece neck so they are very sturdy and strong. Rarely have I ever heard of a Reverend with a broken headstock. I'm sure it has happened but no where near as delicate as Gibs or Epis.

    5. Off white or cream colored guitars with rosewood necks.
    6. Natural finishes...blonde or walnut, etc....showing the grain
    7. Silver sparkle Gretsch Duo Jets

However, I have zero intentions of ever letting go of my Reverend Sixgun HPP, this thing is a rock machine. Maybe it'll jazz or produce country tones, just not from me.

Just found your blog and was well entertained. I especially valued your attention to detail. For what it's worth, I got my first Reverend yesterday. It was also a Crosscut hard-tail and also from Sweetwater. Mine is a natural finish.
Here are my thoughts: I am retired and recently sold off a few of my guitars. Essentially ones I was no longer playing for one reason or another. I sold two PRS core models and a custom Terry McInturff. All technically spendid guitars but lacked a certain magic for me, so they spent much time in their cases. I didn't expect to be buying another guitar, but here I am.
The Reverend is stunning. How they pack so much value into this thing for so little money is beyond me. The fretwork is excellent. On par with the PRS's I disposed of. The setup was spot on, though the first thing I did was change the strings from the 10s that the instrument comes with to a set of balanced 9s. I expected to have to loosen the truss rod slightly to prevent string buzz, but the setup didn't change a bit. The neck is essentially straight from top to bottom, and the action is what I prefer - 2 mm low E and 1.5 mm high E at the 12th fret.
Loving the pickups: they are medium output and sound gorgeous. I had been playing a LP Studio with fairly hot pickups and had to really dial back the volume to keep my Dr Z amp from over-driving when I wanted clean. With these, I have plenty of room to dial in the amp, maybe throw on a pedal, and still control the tone with the guitars pots. Loving this thing.

I picked up a Reverend Charger 290 (2 P90s) from Sweetwater about a month ago and I've been blown away with the guitar. I played a weekend conference the second week I had it and it performed flawlessly. I really like the neck but also really like various shapes and sizes. I'll take a Standard 50s and an Ibanez RG to the same gig... As you note they are made in S Korea but setup in OH. There are some factory tours were you can see the person who inspected and signed your guitar.
Glad to know it wasn't just me who was impressed with the switch! Live I found the bass contour knob to be great as almost a minor boost or cut knob, nice to have just another option to modify the tone. The sustain on my 290 is a good as anything and the guitar isn't too heavy. If you have any PRS core models, the input jack feels very similar, something very satisfying about that hard click.
Great review, that guitar is going to grow on ya!

@@landonbailey My though is that the two most important pieces of information I can get from a guitar review is the "playability" (neck feel etc.) and the tone. The finish is not important since after a short time the nicks magically show up. And as long as the electronics is adequate it really does not matter (and I can change a switch pretty easily). But the "magic" of a guitar comes from closing your eyes and feeling the neck and hearing the tone. I have eleven guitars and they all sound different. From the Godin Stadium (which I bough because of your review), to a Rick, PRS S2, and a Duesenberg /Tom Bukovac. So there is no best tone but tones but there are tones that stand out from the crowd. Well anyway, keep the videos coming. Glad that Sweetwater is supporting you. They are my go to online company. Another perfect day in San Diego. Wish we had more Canadians down here!

You can always achieve the feeling of a rolled fretboard yourself using the rounded shaft of a screwdriver. Just press the rounded shaft of the screw driver against the fretboard edges between the frets. Do this up and down the fretboard and you are good to go. I have had to do this with Warmoth necks as well as their edges are quite sharp.

Since you asked: The Bass Contour Knob is a passive high pass filter similar to the one on several G&L guitars. So, when it's fully turned up you hear the ACTUAL sound of the PUs and when you roll it off you get lesser lows and low mids and also less output,

Pretty Reverend Crosscut! But my OCD would go crazy over the ferrule misalignment, it would be a return issue for sure. OTOH the zig zig lightning bolt headstock is uniquely awesome and a welcome change over many other bland clone headstock variations. It's always the little things that make or break the bonding experience. Not sure about Railhammers, I find rails sound generally too thin (and that too).

Thank you very much for this good review. I was dying for a Crosscut since day 1 I saw and heard it played on YT by Ken Haas. The main reason for me picking up this model is that I appreciate the range of the instrument : how wide it goes from ultra clean (out-of-this -world glassy) tones to dirty growls is amazing.
The thing is for now I've been busy with cleans and for the time to come I need to explore the crunchy side of the Crosscut : from 9:05 on could you tell us if you get this crunch only staying on the amp, or do you get it through some OD pedal ?

Too bad about the misalignment of the string ferules. That's not a good look. Also at 01:32 it looks like the edge of the truss rod channel was cut a little rough. I'm guessing that the bass contour knob functions the same as the fifth smaller bass roll-off knob on a Rickenbacker.

I saw the same ragged fretboard issues on another reviewer's channel. IMO, that's poor quality for a guitar in this price range. Awesome red burst!

    Very nice guitar!
I'd like to add this as far as Sweetwater: It's nice to have a "Sales Engineer" that you can interact with.
Back at Christmas I ordered a few guitar cables. The next day my sales rep called and apologized...they had a mistake and didn't have those specific cables in stock. He asked if it would be ok to substitute a different color tweed. Sure.
When my order arrived he'd actually subbed the cables I had originally ordered with the same color but just longer.

That's agreat looking guitar. I hate being one of those traditionalists that wants Tele/Strat/LP style guitars to look like the originals, but I just am. That Reverend body shape looks quite jarring to my eye on some of their other models, but really works well with that Tele style layout. The colour is beautiful. I wouldn't mind one at all, though this company tends to only offer one or two lefty options at a time.

It looks like a twisted tele. Not digging the sound much. Much better value to be had with a Harley Benton Fusion T model which also has stainless steel frets and is loaded with humbuckers that can be split for more clarity.

How come when you weigh the guitar it's in metric and when you measure the neck it's in imperial measurements? Most of the planet use the metric system so please when you measure the neck use millimeters 😀

    • @landonbailey

    • @PaulCooksStuff

Canada (and UK to a slightly lesser degree) are weird combinations of metric and imperial. There are amusing parody flowcharts online of when to use each.
My head exploded earlier today on an American channel guitar vid that said 1.05 inches and 0.85 inches lol. I can't do metric inches.

    • @landonbailey

On your digital caliper, you should be able to switch between mm and inches.
