The Faces - Maybe I'm Amazed

- Really rather glorious, this. Rodlington Stewart with Ronnie Lane, Ronnie Wood, Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones tearing the arse out of Macca's 'Maybe I'm Amazed' in 1972. Marvellous as the original is, this really has something to it.
I'm a 64 year old guy who saw them 5 times from 1971 until they imploded. I am also sitting here with tears streaming down my face. This brings back some wonderful memories, and some sad ones, too.
Have you read Kenney Jones bio? Titled "Let the Good Times Roll" a good read whether you're a fan or not.
ABSOLUTELY TRUE IM 58 AND
I ALWAYS GO BACK TO THE PAST.
MUSICALLY IT WAS THE BEST
MUSIC. ALL THE GREAT BANDS
MY FAVOURITE WAS ROD STEWART
SOLO ALBUM EVERY PICTURE
TELLS A STORY. MANDOLIN
WIND JUST BEAUTIFUL.
CAUSE I KNOW I LOVE YA.
AND THE JEFF BECK GROUP
TRUTH. BECKOLA . CHEERS.
That's truly so sweet....nothing wrong with blokes getting emotional on occasions.
This cover is absolutely outstanding.....and the half drunk swagger they have is pure and natural.
Before the internet and social media made everyone an immediate star (in their eyes anyway), that kind of bravodo was the norm from the 60's to the 90's.
It's still there with many bands........but the amount of nonsense music that the younger generations are sucking up, is having a detrimental effect on youth culture, being part of a new scene, and individualism.
But at least we have our memories, and we're there during the times when music was pure and un-filtered!
Beautiful.
Hi James...How's 67 treating you? ☮
Just fantastic. The Faces are criminally underrated as one of the greater English rock bands to come out during the 70's.
Amen!!!
What makes you believe they're underrated? Did you travel the taking a survey from every citizen of the world? Please explain.
@@gogoyubari366 Nope, just a general observation. I have spoken to a great deal of people about music over the last 40 years. Most rock fans don't know The Faces. They *might* know "Stay with Me" but that's about it.
Remember the small faces,
Who cares about ratings. Just listen and enjoy.
Ronnie Lane is undoubtedly cool, but when Rod starts singing you know that's one of the best rock vocals of all time.
I was just listening with no special intereset, but when i heard another voice, suddenly i 've open my ears. Aha, I said to myself, here ia a voice. When I looked at the video, I said: man, this is Rod Stewart, veeery young.
What a great cover.
Poor Ronnie Lane got to be a very ill man . His rock friends got together to help him out to pay bills etc .
Remember the Small Faces Steve Marriott? Philistine!
Exactly......its a great comparison between someone who is a good singer to someone who has one of the greatest voices ever.
I was born 20 years too late- todays music cant hold a candle
Music Is Best If yeah Listen to Old Should now & Then
Never too young to learn about the old stuff. I was 12 in 71. It was an amazing time for kids who loved music. It creeps into your DNA, burns itself into your heart and keeps you young. I'm 65 and I still love this music. Welcome to the tribe. Hope you're dancing and passing it on to the youngsters long after I'm gone. Rock n roll will NEVER die! God bless!❤
Its great to hear you say that. I was born on the mark...1960. For me the 60's and 70's were the most awesome years in music. It will never happen again.
Pretty hard to cover a McCartney classic. But this was pure gold.

This should absolutely be a definitive version. Good god, young Rod is amazing.
Not, if your Rod Stewart.
Ronnie Wood! Amazing noise his guitar makes. The greatest era of Rod Stewart.
The super group that wasn't a super group. Ronnie Lane is a joy to watch.
I may be a sucker, but you can't fake the chemistry between Rod Stewart and Ronnie Lane. Brilliant
What the fuck kindda "Chemistry" are you talking about?? Had you said Ron Wood but Lane??
THAT fucking NEED to post a fucking comment
yeah, they really play off each other.
Ronnie Lane was tight with a lot of people; everybody loved him dearly! And we know why! He was just a precious cat who was full of life and liked to have fun....and just one of those special souls. George Harrison another special soul. Hmmm, who else? Oh I bet they all love Jeff Lynne, but as much as I do love him and respect his incredible talents, I don’t think of him in the same way I would Ronnie or George! Help me out, I’ve been at it too long....
Chemistry? Lmao Ronnie left the band because of Rod
@@noahcrews9149 They were hiding their animosity very well. Fair enough, you learn something new every day.
When Rod kicks in with his voice...….fuck......nobody compares to him. Quite possibly the best band in the world at the time. And Ronnies bass playing in this is bloody awesome.
Ronnie always pumped that base.... Also if you listen to Stay With Me , when he kicks in it just powers forward.
If they don't split,Rolling Stones should had great problem!Know what I mean...?
@@mixaliskokkinos1496 I've never understood all the adoration the Stones get. I haven't really been a fan since the early 70s, really. I've always found them to be overrated.
@@barcham Agree after Brian's "passing",they are fortune enough to have for a brief period Mick Taylor. When he decide to go...it's over!Greetings from Greece
Much that wee Ronnie had a lovely voice, when rod bursts in it like like the difference between a support band and the star attraction. Pure power 👍🏴🇬🇧
Every time I see a live Faces performance it reminds me what a live band is supposed to be. They are the absolute definition of Rock & Roll!
Throw a little blues in there for spice.
Your so right. Rod was at hi peak when with the Faces they complimented each other perfectly. Every time I hear the Faces it makes me yearn for my long lost youth. Truly magical.
Best pub band EVER. .
pmay222 I want to go back
@Wade Harten I doubt The Faces would make my list of top 50 favorite bands but I don't think I can disagree with you.
This song was made for Rod's voice, and boy does he show it. Sublime.
Rod was incredible back in the day, no one could touch him
This song was made for the voice of a man who created the song, no one can ever top his singing.
It was made for Paul.
@@clnewman2 😑
@@clnewman2 maybe but Rod totally owned it, depends, if you love bluesy rock and roll this has got it all.
We were so lucky to be born when we were. To grow up with music like this. I feel sorry for kids today with the shite that passes for music.
Man you got that right.
Spot on.
Yep, so much!! Ronnie Lane and Mac, we love you and miss you. And Ronno, Trev and David. Have just been to my local Beckenham Bowie Bandstand revival event. .......TOTP '72.... Maggie May and Starman changed my life xx
Wow I'm shocked to see how great Ronnie Lane sang, he really had a wonderful voice 🎶💔🎶 may he rest in peace 💔🎶💔
Hello Dorothy, How are you doing?
Wonderfully said dorothy,,supberb talent and yes the great ronnie lane ,, as good as any around
What is just so ultra cool about this is the contrast between Ronnie's voice...a sweetness, slightly country/folk vibe starting it off...then Rod plows in like a powerful, dirty freight train! Then the breakdown with both of them singing together. Whew! chill bumps. And Ronnie's bass playing! Badazz! This whole band just had a a thing together.
I think so too. I dod not know he sang.
I know, it was almost like Rod Stewart was "Dueting" with Paul McCartney!
The greatest rock singer I have ever heard
Rod was absolutely spectacular
White soul, this is awesome footage
It's just Soul. Don't qualify it.
During their brief run The Faces might well have been the best band in the UK. Sleazy, Bluesy Swagger at its finest!
The Faces or solo Rod didn't do a bad track until Smiler.
Ohh yes 👍
So true.
Very true. And today everybody claims they loved The Faces, but at the time not enough of us appreciated their talent.
Agree!
The sweet voice of Ronnie Lane and the raw vocal of Rod Stewart. A perfect pair.
Best live version ever of this song, so tight , Ronnie’s bass line is almost the lead
You nailed it, bro. Ronnie, Ian and Kenny were a rythm section from another solar system
It's good, but the definitive live version is from Wings in Seattle 1976.
The greatest ever.
Uh… this is fantastic but it is nowhere near the best ever live version of this song. That is a huge swing and a miss.
@@bryansmith9431 all good just opinions. Curious to know what you think is best live version?
@@5thGenNativeTexan gonna check it out, I’ll just say before I do that the Faces gave it a bluesy heavier sound that im into.
The beginning here is really wild. Ronnie Lane delivers the first verse better than 99 out of 100 singers could; strong and sweet enough to break your heart. Then Rod comes in and blows him away; where have you gone, Rod?
A great version of a great song.
Lane is terrible. He's not a natural vocalist, and his singing is bush league.
This version blows McCartney away.
@@suzannesands7330 but rod cant play bass 😁
Ur right .. i love how the change to rod makes it even more intense
Makka sang all the notes of this beautiful melody ,admittedly in a studio.Live versions tend to 'cheat' by avoiding the high challenging range, Stewart just does his version with some wrong lyrics and murders the tune.
His fans like the intensity and roughness.I think it is shite.
Ronnie was the soul of the Faces and the Small Faces. A true man & a great musician. Hope he is enjoying rock wherever he is! He deserves it.
And he is a very underrated bass player.
@@peterreeks1918
Glen Matlock was a fan of the Faces apparently. If you listen to some of his early recordings with the Sex Pistols like Spunk, and especially the instrumental demo of No Feelings, I think you can hear the influence.
He may not have been as proficient a player as Ronnie Lane, but it sounds pretty catchy to me.
Pity they replaced him with someone who didn't know much about playing the bass at all really.
They turned an all-time ballad into a bad ass rock jam.
They really are one of the most underrated bands in rock history, they've always been one of my favourite artists, it astonished me how little people know about this great band, its pure rock
Underrated is the most overrated word on YT.
@@Bruce-1956 christ it drives me nuts. there's always one 'so underrated' comment.
I can't imagine living without The Small Faces, and The Faces ... ! I really do not get it - "something I don't really understand", how undervalued they are. X
@@stevestrange965 so what? Seems a little bit odd to get so irritated by that! There are plenty of worse things to get ratty over. Don't you think?
Best regards. J
They're so underrated they only sold millions of records & launched the careers of two iconic rock stars.
I mean… Ronnie’s bass playing is such a groove.
I come back every month or so just to listen to this song and to reinforce my belief that The Faces were the greatest rock and roll band of all time. Every artist was at the peak of their forms in these years. We will never see that again.
would have been bigger, than the stones, fact,
Maybe I’m amazed how Rod could pay such a respectful and top-quality vocal homage to such a wonderful Paul’s song! Thumbs up for those who wish a mega star band (Paul on bass, Ringo on drums, Keith on lead guitar, Ronnie on rhythm guitar, Elton and Billy on piano/keyboards, Rod and Mick on vocals) doing a farewell tour at least just once across the whole world saying goodbye to the golden age of pop and rock music (60s, 70s & 80s). Please make this wish come true at least once in a lifetime 🤞🙌🙌
Oh yes….
Fantastic lineup, even if Keith is actually a rhythm guitarist, not a lead, among the best of his kind. As lead guitarist I would add Mick Taylor or John Fogerty
@@lucianolc9564thanks a million for your feedback as I am once more enjoying this wonderful masterpiece of musical art. How about having Mark (Knopfler), Eric (Clapton) and Sting join that dream-team / all-time-star band?
Say what you like about Rod Stewart, he's a great rock n roll singer.
***** Because a lot of people have been slating him lately saying he should stop singing. My only issue with Rod is that he supports the wrong team.
Don't be sorry
***** Calm down. I am not in any way homophobic and don't care who anyone sleeps with. I was referring to Rod's support of Celtic!
***** I wasn't talking in riddles if you're Scottish lol. Rod supports Celtic who are arch rivals to my team (Rangers) it's football, or soccer as you call it!
+Geppetto50 always better to be aware of the facts before you start chinning off. Eh?
The real power behind the Small Faces, Ronnie Lane. Rod must have thought all his Christmasses had come at once with the Faces! The best rhythm section of the 60s/70s!
uh9
+Stewart Nicol as BILLY CONNOLLY He used them really as a vehicle to further his own fame
Agree .
+Stewart Nicol as BILLY CONNOLLY Rod so used the Faces for his own career
+Geppetto50 It depends on whether you use the job as a stepping stone or the people you work with as a stepping stone.
I love when Ronnie’s beginning to sing; he’s singing as if nobody’s watching! How cool was that? And didn’t he have moxie? People (including fans who would never even meet him ) were drawn to him! It’s his aura that’s decidedly unencumbered; which is appealing in any human being....You’re so so missed, Ronnie!
Ronnie lane great musician and artist. I've heard he's unwell I wish him well.
Sweetly said Catherine.
@@stellamorris6367 Ronnie Lane died years ago from MS. True mate. There is nothing at all like this now.
Keith Richards loved the Faces so much he got his best buddy and idol Ronnie Wood, to join the Stones
LEAFYANKEE65 Keith should have tried to get Mick Taylor to stay and not treated him so shabbily.
don't care what anyone says there is nothing as good as this these days
What an absolutely great, soulful interpretation of McCartney's powerful lovesong.
Ronnie opens it with a heartfelt set-up for Rod to come in with his gritty, raspy, whisky-soaked voice that crackles with electricity.
The talent on this little stage honoring the former Beatle.
You have representation of future Rolling Stones, The Who, Jeff Beck Group...just wonderful.
They was as good as the stones
Rod Stewart is one of the greatest lead Vocalists/Showmen I ever saw. He was so lucky that an even stronger vocalist, Steve Marriott left him the finest rhythm section of the 60s, Kenny Jones, the unique Ian McLagen and the Poacher, Ronnie Lane.
If only Steve could have hung in there a bit longer, Small Faces would have ruled. What a perfect band of brothers they were. Thanks to Rod & Woody, though, they kept the boys going....
Ok, so maybe you don't like this (difficult to imagine) but why bother to hit the thumbs- down? Why not just move along? Such a funny world we live in.
I agree & just move onto another video instead of hitting thumbs down unless it's extremely bad like that rap crap.
Since it's such a low number I'm willing to bet 80% are completely by accident. I've done it myself before.
They forgot to take Music Appreciation in high school.
Tremendous, Ronnie Wood so underrated.
I wouldn't say he is underrated. Anyone that knows music knows that Ron is beastly.
Stones fans constantly shit all over him, but that's because they're always comparing him to Mick Taylor. I personally think that in his Faces days, Ronnie was arguably a better musician than Taylor, but I'm probably in the minority.
Kevin Milford fuckin Ronnie’s a legend.
Underrated? Playing in the biggest band on earth for 45 years and you call him underrated? Foolish comment
The Faces rocked. Rod Stewart was never better. I think he knows it too.

Dear old Ronnie lane,,he was a forty two karat diamond geezer. His star will burn bight forever.Peace out.
why is this the best cover I've heard?
Ronnie Lane’s swampy bass tone is the glue here. Mac is a glorious as ever as is Kenney.
Woody and Rod were at their peak in these years... woody was always suppressed in the Stones, and Rod’s solo years aren’t to my taste...
Remembering Ian McLagan. He was a legend for a reason. Musicians--and people--like him don't come along every day. His playing on this cover is nothing short of magic. Will always miss you, Mac, but you will not ever be forgotten.
Also a very nice guy. RIP Mac.
and Ronnie Lane, RIP
Mac's keys on this are superb. Twas a sad loss to music when we lost him (and Plonk too!)
Kenney and Ian …
DJ John Peel rated a Faces gig in Sunderland 1973 as the best live show he ever saw. You get a feel for that in this performance. A band who were much greater than the sum of their parts. Rod Stewart is much better for having to fit in with a group who are his equal, rather than him carrying the whole show as the 'star'.
Got it in one. the tragic thing is both Stewart and lane later regretted what happened. Lane recongnised leaving the Faces as a mistake and Stewart never actually wanted to be a star above the rest; he just got dragged into it. The decline of a graet singer and essentially the end of a phenomenal bassist (notwithstanding his talents as singer and writer)
D Rowley just the best really
Surprised his favourite wasn't a Fall gig! The Faces were such a talented and tight band though

The first gig I went to was The Who in 1969...a couple of months after they performed at Woodstock. The second gig I went to was Faces at Birmingham Town Hall in early 1970, just after First Step was released. Very, very lucky to have been 16 in 1970, fit ready and able to enjoy such fab sounds. Faces never out of my top three faves....absolutely love this.
Absolutely The Faces and Rod at their best. Spine chillingly brilliant.
When Rod cuts in - his voice here is exquisite.
I heard this for the first time tonight! What a great jam, been a Faces, Rod, Beatles fan since 1970's, and it blows me away the gems I find still after 40+ years!! Awesome!
Ronnie Lane.... so talented. I love this version as much as McCartney's.... and that is saying a lot.
The Carleen Anderson version is great too - somewhere between the two!
Paul's and his Wings version from the 75/76 tour blows the 1st solo McCartney album version away also, Pauls voice slightly bit raw but he's sounds better that way on some songs and this one is top notch and the late Jimmy McCullough gets off a very nice guitar solo much better than Pauls on McCartney.
The Faces were the perfect band for Rod Stewart. That combination was like lightning in a bottle.
This is just mind blowing...listen to ronnie's bass on the cans . OMG.

It's drool time , I was a lucky boy at 18 1971 we just moved to south England and rod and the faces were playing at the local opera house , boscombe , Bournemouth , U.K. Me and a couple of buds banged on the back stage door and the roadies let us in , I'm leaning on the PA system looking out over a sea of women , brilliant !

what a joy to hear the faces live again. technology allows us to share so many great experiences from the past, but it's also helped kill musicianship and live music. pre internet, pre-mtv, we used to just get an album and wear out the groves playing it. if one of your bands would finally come to town, the show was an event that you and your friends would be excited about for months before and after. we didn't know it was a fleeting era at the time
Beautifully done, Thank You !!

I'm 50 but my brothers and sister were 7,8,9 years older than me so I grew up listening to these bands and my sister had crush on Rod Stewart. Just watching this reminds of the days of true bands before big corporations ruined it. If I could go back I would even though I listened most of the time to heavier bands, these guys had it all.
