Usually see pro's using Yongnuo as a backup or misc use, but not primary. I also use Godox and it better than my old Sony flashes. (and cheaper too) Godox AD200, ad400 etc.
I have 3 of these. I use them with softboxes (via bowens mount). Gone with those flashes for years: mud, rain, river, snow, high noons shoots.... with YN560-TX you can also adjust the power of each one :) It is must a must have in my opinion also :)
Having also seen the positive reviews, I purchased this flash and the matching controller for about $100 US total last year. It certainly works well enough for my needs. The controller is capable of triggering multiple flash units for those that need more complex lighting arrangements. Long story short: this is a better investment for getting started with flash rather than spending the cost of another camera to get the matching brand name flash.
I was so impressed by the construction, performance, and price of my first Yongnuo 560 IV flash that I immediately purchased three more. The YN 560 IV has become my workhorse electronic flash for shooting portraits, action, interior architecture, weddings, still lifes, macro, and candids.
Nice to see you talk about flash Pete, but currently the crowd favorite budget option is Godox. You should definitely check it out! TT600/TT685 are more feature rich options, and the slightly more expensive V850II and V860II have lithium ion batteries that are significantly faster at recycling than AA speedlights. Not to mention Godox has an insanely diverse set of tools beyond the speedlight, that all work off the same internal radio system. They also have cross compatibility between all the big camera brands, so you don't have to replace your flash system if you change brands.
The question I’ve asked for the past four Q&A vids was about external flash, and you’ve responded with an entire video. Needless to say, I’m very appreciative! Thanks Pete!
Flashes are just so much fun if you get some time to play around with them! I've never used an on camera flash but I do use a studio flash quite often. Might just give it a try... thanks for the video, keep being awesome!
Weirdly the one time I got a picture I really liked with on board flash, I exposed past it. Logically it should have just massively overexposed but it actually filled the color and contour back into the picture, perhaps because the on board flash was weak enough lol. (It was just an alcoholic drink at a place with cool lights)

You've done an amazing job and I really like your videos. However I have used a Yongnuo YN568 and now own a Godox TT685C for use with my Canon EOS 700D/Rebel T5i. 1) The Godox has a better build quality. The Yongnuo I used sounded like cracking when held. 2) The Godox has faster cycle times and manages power better. It has fast cycle times at 1/4 power or higher and has never heated my Eneloop batteries whereas the Yongnuo made them heat up after shooting in longer parties. 3) The Godox has a really nice user interface, especially if you're a Canon, Sony or Lumix user and used to scroll wheels. It makes changing settings much faster. 4) Godox flashes are relevant even after a system change. I want to change to Micro Four Thirds or Fuji and I know I can buy a new Godox and pair it with my Canon version for dual flash setups completely trouble-free.

I would recommend the Godox TT600. For me is the best. It doesn't have e-ttl. But it has built in wireless, high speed sync and a bucnh of more stuff. And THE BEST PART. THE PRICE! IT'S ONLY 66€ (74$ aprox.). I highly recommend it. Just wanted to share it with you guys. Have a nice day! Bye! :D
It's also wise to invest in rechargable AA batteries for strobes because they eat through batteries so quickly and it's gonna get expensive buying disposable AA batteries often, plus they're not good for rhe environment 😀 Awesome video Pete!!
Thank you for making videos like this! Real photographers/ videographers understand that lighting and audio is everything. While amateurs just want to look at shiny new camera bodies.
Seriously unsure why you recommended getting this speedlite when Godox has the TT600 which is not only cheaper but has a built in transceiver which allows you to control and fire the light remotely OR use it as a transmitter to fire other Godox lights. Come on, Peter. I'm sure you know this. Help your audience and try out the Godox TT600.
But you now that YN-560 IV has built in transceiver to fire the light remotely OR use it as a transmitter to fire other YN lights? Come on. I'm sure you know this.
Yongnuo is so last year and doesn't have a remote dedicated to Sony. GODOX is hands down a superior system no matter what brand you have! Being able to set light output on any remote flash from the transmitter is dope!
The 685 version of Yongnuo flash for Nikon and Canon. They will do ETTL and ITTL. I have two of the Nikon version with a controller and they are great. The Zoom head will go to 200mm instead of 105 and do high speed sync. I prefer to use natural light or ambient light when possible. But sometimes just to adjust the output to 1/8 power to fill in or throw just enough light to separate the subject from the background makes any flash / speedlite worth having. The controller like any other manufacturer can and will do three separate channels and handle several flashes. I don’t have advanced equipment and my camera won’t do high speed sync. But the flashes I have were 1/3 the price of flashes made by the major camera companies.
Peter, I don't know if you'll see this, but I greatly enjoy your videos and they've made a huge impact on my photography and honestly life in general, I started with a old 50d, and just watching your videos inspired me to put work into what I enjoy and I just want you to know that even something as light hearted as your videos can have an amazing effect. Man i'd love more videos like these. maybe the masses don't watch these vids, but those of us that are really trying to learn more creatively are. Lighting doesn't have much good info out their, how to do an s curve in lightroom has plenty. Not knocking any other content, just loved this.
This flash is actually somewhat cheaper than 99$. If you actually have around 100$ I'd recommend the YN 600 EX RT II for about 108$. I own two of them and they have never let me down. They also come with a great TTL system and you can either wirelessly control one flash with another or use the controller built for the system. It's also compatible with Canon's flash system.
Hey everyone I am not a photohrapher/filmmaker. I don't own a camera. But I still watch Pete's videos & all these lighting hacks...it's amazin. The world of photography/video is unbelievable
Godox flash system is very simple but well organized. One trigger & you can fire almost all of the TTL flashes of Godox. Thye've inbuilt receiver inside the flash & hence you don't need additional receiver.
I would personally recommend going with the Godox brand, as it has high speed sync (HSS), TTL, Lion battery, and still pretty inexpensive, compared to the Sony, Canon, Nikon brands. Happy flashing!
Things I've noticed about the Yongnuo speedlites from 2 years of use: 1. Overheating on brighter settings. I have to stop and take the batteries out because sometimes it got too hot and shut itself off after only 60-70 shots. 2. The plastic notches that keep the battery door closed are easy to break off. (carry a small roll of gaffer tape so you can tape it shut if you have to) 3. They're cheap but effective. 4. Slow recycle when using brighter settings sometimes 3-5 secs so I wouldn't rely on it for fast paced events where you need to get the shot. 5. They are very simple to use and the wireless trigger system makes controlling multiple speedlites a breeze. Great for when you want to use a lot of lights to pop light in creative ways around a dark courtyard, or for hiding a bunch around churches to accent the background. In conclusion, a great beginner flash, good for slower paced shoots, but if you need something that can keep up with a fast paced workflow, you might want to spend a little more cash and get a Godox.
Peter, I'm so happy I found your channel today! Who said a video about a flash couldn't get anyone's attention 😄 The content was delivered with practical tips and humour. Looking forward to watching your other stuff!
Once I had to shoot a groom and bride on their wedding day before the evening party, but they arrived to the photoshoot site very late, almost at sunset, and all I had was an 24-105mm 4L + 50mm 1.8, and a Canon flash without any modifiers/dome. We were in some sort of a village and planned to take poses in different locations as fast as possible. Each couple of meters we walked, and having the camera on full manual, I had to dial in the power of the flash manually to get the best of the ambient light, and each time directing the flash on the best available surface to recreate a huge source of light. Then readjust the camera accordingly. The flash direction was being adjusted like 10-15 times every minute. 30 mins in, and I was literally soaked in my clothes it felt like a sports tournament rather than a photoshoot. That is one day I will never forget. But thankfully it was worth it, and the results were way more creative than anything I'd have achieved at good daylight.
Hola ! Just go for a Godox TT685 that has all the features of a Pro-Flash and cost about 150$ CAD. super easy to use and does have the E-TTL feature. simply way better !
To hell with no one wanting videos on lightibg and audio content. We need more stuff like this. Some people likely just don't know what's good for them 😉 As someone who just recently started using professional light setups for indoor shoots, I need all the help I can get. Great work on this one. Super helpful stuff!
I like how, when you showed the sample photos of yourself, you used the sound of the camera focusing and capturing the picture. Nice touch! That's the small things that make you videos a step above. Thanks again for making these.
I'm not a pro, but my family ask me to take photos at their birthdays and similar reunions. So I got 2 Yongnuo 565exII flashes and Yongnuo wireless triggers all of them ETTL. My camera is just the tiny SL1 but i have managed to get some really nice pictures, and I can easily make a set up for basic product-photography. You can DIY some diffusers and improve your lighting for a few bucks. Yongnuo ETTL for canon have really good results. The only improve would be lithium batteries. This is a really good recomendation for those who want to learn more but cant spend thousands. Like me. Thanks Peter.
Yes, everything you said at the end, please do it! I love all you content but the main reason a lot of us follow you is to learn from you and Flash is one of those things i just haven’t been able to put the time into learning

Wow, Peter you've got a great blues voice. I'm a singing teacher, and just from your first few bars of riffing I really want to encourage you to explore singing a bit more maybe?!
I'd love to see you rent out a studio and play around with the flashes. My go-to cheap/quality flashes are Godox - they are every bit as good as the Canon brand and in some cases, a little better.
I just bought two Godox flashes and a trigger for less than $200, and they came with diffusers and gels. I set one of the flashes at low power and stuck it behind my subject and fired away. I almost forgot, they also support high speed sync. I used a Yongnuo for 2 years and it served me well until I broke it last weekend. I almost replaced it with the same model, but the Godox trigger seemed more streamlined, plus my two flash/trigger setup was cheaper. TTL sucks, setting the power manually on each flash gives better results.
Make a full video explaining everything about flash. Plz .

Some people likely just don't know what's good for them 😉 As someone who just recently started using professional light setups for indoor shoots, I need all the help I can get. Great work on this one. Super helpful stuff!
Been using this flash for over a year. Absolute must have.
Yongnuo is junk! Try the Godox units... much greater realiability/performance and works brilliantly with their x-pro trigger system.
I agree. YN's good side is only their price.
Spare me the hyperbole. Yongnuo is not junk.
I like how, when you showed the sample photos of yourself, you used the sound of the camera focusing and capturing the picture. Nice touch! That's the small things that make you videos a step above. Thanks again for making these.
The godox v860ii is a great flash too. It is also not that expensive and it has an ettl mode.
double price ;)
And rechargeable battery
Agreed the godox v860II is amazing.
It would be cool if you made a video about the meaning behind your tattoos 👊🏻
yes a video explaining different light setups in like a studio type environment would be dope
Get Godox instead, they have an amazing 2,4ghz Transmitter with great controls for on camera. Best system right now
Yes, everything you said at the end, please do it! I love all you content but the main reason a lot of us follow you is to learn from you and Flash is one of those things i just haven’t been able to put the time into learning
Can I have a Peter McKinnon for $99? That's the real question!
No. The real answer. He’s priceless
Yes to the expanded flash vid!
Need a tutorial on the skat solo.
agree haha
Please try to rember how a statement like this sounds to someone unfamiliar with jazz lmao
yeey i have older version of this flash, without any wireless stuff, but for price, i absolutelly love it and it is stronger than anything
PETER MCKINNON IS THE MAN! So much so that he's inspired me to create my own channel showcasing the behind the scenes of my photoshoots and offering photography tips. If anyone would like to follow me along on this journey, that would be awesome!
YES, of course! So excited for you
I'm right there with you! I love your content and deff will be subscribing!
Keep killing it!
So cool !!!
Just checked out your stuff! You're onto something
I still have my YN560 mark I that I bought 7 years ago with my Nikon D90 and it still works!
Godox makes a 2 flash with trigger and it’s $180, I have it and I love it for weddings
Same! I hate Chinese products, but try not to remind myself about it 😝
Thanks for the info. I do weddings and need it. I’ll look into it!
I’ll never buy their flash again. It blew out on me in 3 months. It was my first and last one 💩
I use this flash and it’s absolutely worth every penny 👍🏼
Wow, Peter you've got a great blues voice. I'm a singing teacher, and just from your first few bars of riffing I really want to encourage you to explore singing a bit more maybe?!
I love youtubers that interact with their viewers & reply like or comment on their videos ....
I'd love to see you rent out a studio and play around with the flashes. My go-to cheap/quality flashes are Godox - they are every bit as good as the Canon brand and in some cases, a little better.
Can you name ONE of those cases?
Yes mate! For sure do a studio portrait video.
I wish I had that kinda money
I just bought two Godox flashes and a trigger for less than $200, and they came with diffusers and gels. I set one of the flashes at low power and stuck it behind my subject and fired away. I almost forgot, they also support high speed sync. I used a Yongnuo for 2 years and it served me well until I broke it last weekend. I almost replaced it with the same model, but the Godox trigger seemed more streamlined, plus my two flash/trigger setup was cheaper. TTL sucks, setting the power manually on each flash gives better results.
Excellent as always
Didn't expect to see you here!
Take it to the Studio for sure!!! I love the science behind studio photography and lighting. You're the man Pete! Keep crushing it!
I'll second the comments recommending Godox.
More options, more expandability, more functionality, and not much more expensive.
Can you give ONE example?
@@krane15 The flashes, triggers, light modifiers, even LED continuous lights.
I wake up every morning and watch your vids thanks man for starting my day so good
Good Tip man!Thank you!
Now Peter's bloopers feels like "AFTER CREDIT SCENES" of MCU ... Extra entertainment! ❤️
Godox flashes are much better and if you get the 860II LI-ON Battery last forever.
yes Pete, it will be awesome to make more video like this about flashes and strobes
