Well, I'm sure that they could if they wanted to. It's just way too small a market for their interest. Heck, look at Ford cutting sedans in the US. Last year's Fusion sales (I think about 220K) is in the ballpark (didn't look it up) of all Mazda vehicle sales in the US (slightly under 2% of US market). And Ford already has some sunken cost, which won't be saved, continuing sedans overseas. SUVs just too profitable, so that is where all their effort is going. Small markets are (generally) for small companies.
2600 is to heavy. And to me it kills what a miata is subpost to be. Very light and nimble, now compared to a normal sized car 2600 is considerably light. I own a 2005 mx5 and I'm planning on swapping it with a j37 v6. Which has 200 hp more and weighs lighter than the stock engine. So now I have more power and less weight. So now I dont need to put heavy duty parts into it. And my car could possibly be faster.
There is a concept, a philosophy behind the Mx-5. The point is not to go fast, it's to have fun at whatever speed you're doing. A big part of that comes from running the engine all the way through the rev range, squeezing it for all the power it can provide, which is not much, bit feels inredibly rewarding. Now check this video. I doubt he went over 3.5K (except on those staged straight accelerations). It's more powerful, yeah. It's good for highway or straight line pull, yes. But is sucks in the slow twisties, which is the whole point of the MX-5 philosophy.
@@TheG60528XiJinPing I think you're missing the appeal of this car. Not knocking the C5 Z06 at all, but the 'Vette is a land barge by comparison, both in exterior dimensions and weight. These aren't necessarily liabilities on a racetrack, where grip, downforce and power rule, but they are when trying to have fun on a tight, winding, mountain 2-lane.
The price of all the parts is astonishing high by themselves. The brand new motor, trans, and harness alone is 13.8k not to mention the 2000 for v8 roadster subframe kit. 2500 for the fox racing coilovers and at least 1000 for the diff. 2500 for the rest of the rear end driveline 1000 for the little big break kit. Exhaust is another 1000. The moroso short oil pan 1000. All of this for brand new parts is around 24k and that's missing a lot of small things that add up to possibly a couple more grand. If you had a non specialized shop charging the typical 75hr at no less than 100hrs that's 30+k. Flyin' isn't some random shop though they are the v8 miata guys with years and years of RnD. I own a 06 mx5 and have crunched these numbers too many times. I've also sourced junkyard engines and parts and it still comes out to no less than 10 grand for a d.i.y. swap with a way more sketchy result. So for everyone here saying it's too much cost for the resulting car hasn't simply done the math.
no you guys are wrong. I have built my 2016 ND MX5 so I have lots of experience with this. Mine is a way better built, more reliable, faster, all quality parts, so let me explain my built to you, I put a ferrari badge for 5$ on mine, so my built cost 5$ + the MX5, and because it's now a ferrari it's a lot faster. but of course I saved over 9000$ of labour by doing the badge swap myself.

Flyin' Miata, and a few other businesses like it here in the U.S. is seriously one of the best things about owning a Miata in the first place. They offer high quality parts for literally anything you could want for your car from full fledged engine swap kits, turbo kits, suspension kits, and many many more things. I DIY a lot of things, but when its something I want to buy instead of DIY, I look to them and their colleagues first.

that's really not bad at all for a brand new platform for fully modded warrantied car with A/C. y'all do realize parts prices don't equal labor prices. I bet they charge over $150/hr. and that car has easy $15k in just engine/trans/rearend. and whatever parts you take off your stock ND either sell or they may give you credit. don't compare the miata you can build with a junkyard LQ engine, old T56 trans and some random rearend..yea you could build old miata for under $15k yourself....I've bought few things from Flyin Miata and they have always been top amazing quality and great service.
Flying Miata is one of those top-tier mod locations that every car community deserves. Great customer service, good communication, and shipping times. And most importantly you feel they really vet the parts they sell.
Really nice build. I really respect the builder and their philosophy and you sold me on the company fully, when you stated you replaced the electric steering with a proper hydraulic rack for all the right reasons. Brings me joy to know there are still tuning companies that know what is really good.
People complaining about price....gtho. Turn key super fast car that no one else has. Can outrun anything under 100k and you aren't just another vette/911 on the road. This is awesome. Kudos to Flyin' Miata.
Remarkably cheap considering the amount of integration and reliability testing required. It's not just a matter of throwing parts at it until it works, designing a car to work as a unit despite the immense complexity of its suspension is no mean feat. The chassis is the most difficult part, and not just the process of engineering the mounting system for the powertrain.

Guys, $50k plus car isn't that bad when you consider this is a brand new 100% custom car. It is really well balanced meaning you don't have like a 80/20 weight split. You have amazing turn in and excellent power to weight. If you want a cheaper v8 miata then buy a used one. They can be found for under $20k all day long.
Great video and awesome build. People bagging on 50k to turnkey build an LS3 swapped anything with all the upgrades to handle that low down torque, you have no idea what it costs. That's actually a pretty fair price. I'm not much less into my build but it's even more extensive, just in an S2000 and no additional mark up for sale. Perhaps even slightly better chassis again for such a swap than the MX5. I can't wait to hear that sound when I'm driving.... one of the best production engine sounds ever IMO.
I couldn't use this as my Daily Driver, but god damn I'd love it for a second fun car.. great look, great sound, it looks like it rides great and that it's nothing but fun! Great work Keith, and the guys at Flying Miatas.. Time to save up for something like this lol
Just love these FM guys... Keith is near God-like status in so many different (and non Miata) communities. I've been a fan since they were in West Orange NJ (Only 2 towns away from me then) and the things their "stuff" can do for my '93 (now turbo) Miata is nothing short of a miracle.. I've dropped a tick over 300 HP from a 1.6 liter engine.... Did you get that? A bottle of milks worth of displacement. And the car is 150% drive-able, next to no lag (2871r bb- and soon a billet upgrade) and is an absolute blast to drive at 2275 lbs with fluids. On a cool night, when the intercooler is extra happy (cold), I can smoke 2nd gear and even the top of 3rd!!!! Anything over 300 is useless (but entirely welcome)... I'm calling them tomorrow for a new downpipe and turbo manifold.... Simply can't wait!!!!
I've dealt with flying miata; amazing company! Keith is a god on all of the miata forums. if you have a miata, flying miata is by far the best place to go for customer service and quality products. they are expensive but at the end of the day well worth the extra money.
Nice job on this video. I really like the dual window editing. More car vids should be made this way so that you can follow the in cabin conversation while having an uninterrupted view of the road experience. Great car too!
Yeah, "good gas mileage" is a VERY relative term and it's DIRECTLY related to that old right foot!! ;^) Just because it's capable of getting 25mpg doesn't mean there's any chance of that ever happening. ;^)
Hats off to the guy for going that deep on a Miata. Not how I'd spend 75k but custom builds never make $$$ sense unless the builder get famous famous after you bought it.
@@trollmastermike52845 exactly! Idk what miata is thinking. They could’ve at least made a miata with a turbo pushing 320hp with awd. That alone would’ve been a beast!
To everyone who is grumbling about the $75K all in cost - can you honestly think of another car that is cheaper, brand new, with 433hp per ton? There are a couple of Caterhams, a few other superlights, but I honestly can't think of another car that has that kind of power to weight ratio that can be used as a daily.
bacongobbler Mazda car with Chevrolet power train. Shouldn't be too challenging for a good independent to spanner. Support for LS crate stuff is excellent and once in a blue moon you'll need a part from their inventory but that is true of most unusual cars and Flyin Miata have a good track record. See little to fear here.
That's why you do it in a previous gen Miata and do the work yourself, don't buy a crate motor/trans/etc and end up with a 450whp 2400lb car for 10-15 grand.
+thesmokingtire If you're into track days and having fun on the weekends with a car, is the juice worth the squeeze to build or buy a v8 Miata over a C6 or C7 Vette? I've been trying to figure out what will be my next fun car and both these cars are on the list of possibles. I've driven both but never actually driven what I'd consider a well-sorted LS swapped Miata. I'd expect a shorter performance ceiling with the Miata but since it's lighter it'd be easier on wearables it might net me cheaper fun in the long run while still retaining a somewhat livable experience on the street. I'm not in love with the looks of either but I am a fan of the performance and fun, along with the ease of LS parts. Matt, since you drive everything under the sun do you have any thoughts that could help?
Stig Msr Honestly, I haven't had any issues with the blind spots. In practicality the back corner blind spots are just as blind as any other car. Also, I have my mirrors set up to take away that issue. The rearview mirror shows the whole rear and the sideview mirrors are just outside of that view so that each view in the mirrors are connected to one another.
Thanks I got to beat on a friend's SS and the a-pillars seemed to get in my way looking through every corner. I'm sure you can get used to it in time but I'd rather choose a different platform I can see out of easier. it was a fun car besides that.
Labor and R&D isn't cheap. Just because you can find certain parts for cheaper on Ebay doesn't mean their price is crazy. Every swap ends up costing more to do than you estimate in your head, because small things add up quickly. For people who have more money than time, and just want a super clean swap without a bunch of headaches it's a great option.
Still cheaper than a new Corvette and you get something not everyone has with better power/weight with equal reliability. If you're looking to spend 75k there are a lot of other options that will cost the same and get you less.
everyone talking about "i'd have a corvette/porsche/whatever for that money"... then you'd just be another dude with a corvette. this is so much cooler, and such a different car.
Nice car and all, but completely ruins the point of the car. It's almost 80k , you could get a z06 for that price. It's probably better to just strap a supercharger or a turbo on the miata and have tons of fun.
Flyin Miata builds these more as show cars, if anyone WANTS to pay them that much to build one they will, but these are R&D cars, they are in the business of building kits for you to do the swap yourself, in which case it costs far less.
Gary Singh but then again you get a tiny, very Light and Dont forget FUN car with an ls3 that you can use every Day. Tell me of another car like that...
***** I'm all for V8 Miata swaps but don't put that old foxbody 5.0 in there, that is a HEAVY motor and doesn't even make the power of a good turbo setup, and will still cost more to get done. If your going to do a v8 swap an aluminum block is the only way to go.
I was talking about doing the work yourself as well. Everyone used to do 5.0 swaps back in the 90's, not that set apart considering thats what Monster Miata built its entire business on lol. There's a reason everyone moved on from those engines, heavy, inefficient, crappy power for the size and weight, and not as reliable as other options.
Believe it or not, a proper turbo or supercharger would likely add the same or more weight than an LS. On top of that, the LS is reliable out of the box, while most turbo mods ruin reliability. Try to retain daily driveablity and normal longevity by adding over 3x stock HP. Good luck.
Mike Hedrick Agreed...definitely a ton of profit margin in that build.

people are annoying as fuck in the comments appreciate this build instead of telling everybody what you'd buy instead of this car, who cares
No! The world needs to know I'd buy a bone stock run of the mill corvette!
jashy66 i rather get a used porsche 911 turbo or a gtr and tune it...kill everything on the road while laughing 😂😂
when matt isnt talking as much you know he is impressed, such an awesome video
Kieth your looking great. FM is the way to go. Fan for a long time. I miss TurboDog
Bet Turbo Tom would love this rig!
I've dealt with flying miata; amazing company! Keith is a god on all of the miata forums. if you have a miata, flying miata is by far the best place to go for customer service and quality products. they are expensive but at the end of the day well worth the extra money.
These new mx5s actually look pretty good. I like pretty much everything except the taillights on them. And with a V8, that'd be a sweet ride!
Nice job on this video. I really like the dual window editing. More car vids should be made this way so that you can follow the in cabin conversation while having an uninterrupted view of the road experience. Great car too!
12:45 "I think it's geared for around 250mph" Just imagine going that fast and telling everyone you did it in a miata.
He said 200 in 5th gear but still insane
I might have missed this but they talked about the weight but not the weight distribution. That's what I'm most interested in.
It might be q bit too much for me at $75k, but man I love that thing.
Its $50k
@@TLouski plus the price of the car
@@svmuscle7677 yeah I heard that after and got too lazy to edit the comment...lol
@@TLouski gotcha
the sound of the car is incredible...
The only thing Keith didn't respond to was when Matt suggested that it must get pretty good gas mileage. Hilarious!
Yeah, "good gas mileage" is a VERY relative term and it's DIRECTLY related to that old right foot!! ;^)
Just because it's capable of getting 25mpg doesn't mean there's any chance of that ever happening. ;^)
I've got nothing but respect for the flying Miata team
I only regret that I have but one like to give for this video.
The early bird gets the worm, Boise.
What are "worm boys"?
DOUBLE DOWN IS OUT YEAH BOYS
Worm Boy checking in.
Can confirm, am worm boy.
warm boys
Take a drink every time Matt says balanced
Id love to see what Randy Probst thinks of this Miata
i still think that an s54 would be the perfect engine for an mx-5. I always wondered why mazda never went for a low displacement inline 6.
Valon Selimaj i6's are long/heavy
Dalton Villnave this is true but they sound so damn good and are so smooth.
Yes!!! Throw an RB20 in that bitch!
Just getting a Z seems like a simpler solution.
Ethan Gee yes an rb20 sounds awesome too
Hats off to the guy for going that deep on a Miata. Not how I'd spend 75k but custom builds never make $$$ sense unless the builder get famous famous after you bought it.
XD LS3 from a holden commo :DDD
James Lovett commo is a mans car
:) so is a falcon
RIP Falcon
Bullet Roadster
Only one commo came with a ls3.
This and awd swap would be king of the roads. Omg! This already is amazing!
Christ, awd v8 miata would be a monster
@@trollmastermike52845 exactly! Idk what miata is thinking. They could’ve at least made a miata with a turbo pushing 320hp with awd. That alone would’ve been a beast!
@alien_raider464 faster, too, on the starting line in street conditions
toms turbo garage has a nice build as well
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Cool car!
arhhh love this, but you need to check out Toms Turbo garage miata @TheSmokingtire he did this but in his garage just as good imo.
he did a great job, just not as refined.
+frankenstein01 how so?
Damn that's a clean looking set-up. It looks like it's from the factory.
I never got the feeling that Matt was excited about this car (while driving), and that says a lot to me.
Flyin' Miata does quality work for sure. I have a lot of their stuff on my NB and each component gave a noticeable improvement. Nice vid!
This? www.topspeed.com/cars/others/2014-exomotive-exocet-by-flyin-miatadriven-ar164765.html
bacongobbler Mazda car with Chevrolet power train. Shouldn't be too challenging for a good independent to spanner. Support for LS crate stuff is excellent and once in a blue moon you'll need a part from their inventory but that is true of most unusual cars and Flyin Miata have a good track record. See little to fear here.
F type? Boxter? Hell alfo romeo? All under 75k.
Navid Soroush True but none with 400hp per ton.
Mark Nicholas this isn't a miata anymore. And if you love a miata with the power of a f type then get a used f type and save 20k.
pretty cool. a stock ND at autocross on re-71s is a incredibly balanced car. Mazda nailed it with the ND. I am STR class in a NB 03' myself.
3:24 sounds like Koenigsegg
Mikołaj Ploska that uses a v8 too
Had Fox shocks on my old 3rd gen camaro GT1/TA car. They have been doing the road racing scene a long time. Awesome MX-5
never clicked on a video so fast before
What a great package.
This guys know what theyre doing.
YOU BOYS LIKE MEXICOOOOOOO?!?!?
huh
Code for street racing
classic!!!
Jeff K Shenanigans
Teh trick is to drive something quicker than a Crown Vic :)
this is one of the best one takes ever
it's worth every penny may cost same as a vette or porsche but driving a 500 hp car that weighs 500 to 1000 lbs less is amazing
Sweet I've been waiting for someone to ls swap a newer mx5
Now I want an LS swapped Fiata.
Gay
Flyin Miata is the best in the business when it comes to Miatas.
Oh this is awesome... and I thought my LS swap was tight! Nice.
Fantastic! Thanks for posting this Matt!
50k and a Miata.
So... 50k? 😐
The base model is $25k MSRP, which is the best one to start with since all the lub's cool stuff will get replaced anyway
two of my favorite things on the internet in one place :]
Men and lubrication fluids?
Great stuff! Looks like a very entertaining car!
At a Cars and Coffee here in North Carolina there was an LS1 swapped NA Miata. It had the air intake in the front bumper
I mean it's cool but $50000...
Plus the car.
I guess you're paying for all the talent and experience these guys have, also they probably don't want to sell so many of them in order to make money
You must take into account that a new Corvette Z06 convertible starts at $84,000...
I mean brakes and suspension are probably 10 of that, profit is probably 10 and 30 is probably the engine swap
You've never done any work on cars have you?
the initial startup exhaust note is fiendishly good, sub-woofers rattling to sound of V8
I wouldn't even consider spending 70k on a Corvette when this is an option. It's probably more reliable too.
the o.g. miata shop. always wanted a flyin miata
with 75k i would just get a viper or a lotus( if you want light car)
Oni Mori this is for people who love Miatas.
That's why you do it in a previous gen Miata and do the work yourself, don't buy a crate motor/trans/etc and end up with a 450whp 2400lb car for 10-15 grand.
I wouldn't mind a nice Lotus.
GettCouped i like miatas, i used to have boosted first gen miata. im just saying that this amount money could be spent on something better.
Or swap an ls1 into an NA and keep the other 65k
My vette cart has the exact weight, power, and torque curve!! Almost done!
How did that engine fit in there?
Pushrod engines are very compact, and they aren't any longer than the original inline four.
Seems like a steal at the combined price..."geared for 200 mph in 5th gear" 👍🏻👍🏻
Can you get a good automatic in it,will it fit?my nb has ragile rear control arms
Is v8 torque too much for them
+thesmokingtire If you're into track days and having fun on the weekends with a car, is the juice worth the squeeze to build or buy a v8 Miata over a C6 or C7 Vette? I've been trying to figure out what will be my next fun car and both these cars are on the list of possibles. I've driven both but never actually driven what I'd consider a well-sorted LS swapped Miata. I'd expect a shorter performance ceiling with the Miata but since it's lighter it'd be easier on wearables it might net me cheaper fun in the long run while still retaining a somewhat livable experience on the street. I'm not in love with the looks of either but I am a fan of the performance and fun, along with the ease of LS parts. Matt, since you drive everything under the sun do you have any thoughts that could help?
definitely C7 grandsport or even a camaro SS.
I can attest to the Camaro SS. The 1LE track packages are coming out soon for the SS soon as well.
I want to like the the Camaro, but I like seeing out of the car more. Matt's hoodie reference is spot on with those.
I'm sure you can get used to it in time but I'd rather choose a different platform I can see out of easier. it was a fun car besides that.
now we need a head to head. flyn miata vs monster miata, lol.
Oh yes I love me a good V8
I needed a one take of these once I read they'd made them!
Thank you insomnia
Keith Tanner is a legend amongst miata fans.
@MattFarah Try driving a VW Beetle RSI tough guy !
RCXDerp The Salomondrin from CUP GANG?
Yep, accidentally deleted that comment some how
Derp in name, derp in nature.
JRE brought me here. Damn! That's a pocket rocket!
$50k including the new car guys is pretty good. Lot of haters....
Oh, wait..... It's $75k??? WTF???
Wu Watt It's the price of the car + $50k... So 75kish
A Miata is how much new?
Dont get me wrong I really like the car. I wanna do that swap to my 350z.
i would love to see them put on corvette badges and the corvette header plastic. It fits so well for trolling
Well
Ford swaps Mazda Speed6 engine in mustang ecoboost 😆
everyone talking about "i'd have a corvette/porsche/whatever for that money"... then you'd just be another dude with a corvette. this is so much cooler, and such a different car.
Good luck.
love the car and that sound is awesome, love flying miata's work keeping the little car alive
$50,000 plus a Miata is ridiculous.
Mike Hedrick I thought he said 15 plus the Miata and I was like"deal" 😂😂😂
lol, thanks for posting this....I wasn't sure if I heard FIFTY or FIFTEEN
Not at all. Try doing it yourself and see what happens.
Mike Hedrick Agreed...definitely a ton of profit margin in that build.
its a demo car for the shop. I doubt they will get many buyers for this exact spec. As somebody said, you need a sports car (this hing) in the showroom to sell station wagons (turbo 4 pots in their case).
