The Avdel item is a riveting gauge. The cut out is for correct setting length on rivet stem and the hole is the correct rivet diameter after setting. A tool used by aircraft engineers and some aluminium boat makers

Do you use the same camcorder to film your wrap-ups as you do in the field? I'm looking for a quality zoom camcorder and yours seems pretty decent. Thanks.

Your defiantly right about the older coins in the ground in the North east Found a 1793 Bars and Vine Large cent XF in Clay in Upstate NY Back in the late 80s Also find a lot of State Colonials up here. But rare silver is hard to come by due to people being poor and Gold and silver were carefully watched.

Hi JD, just an FYI for you, the long piece that you thought was a brooch, is actually a hair clip usually worn with longer hair at the base of the neck. The sweet maple leave piece looks like one half of a ornate belt buckle. Ladies wore these on dressy clothes during the 20's through the 40's. I really enjoy watching your videos as I would love to dig but have arthritis badly in my hands. Keep digging, and I will keep watching.

Not a brooch at 19:20, looks like a barrette! (for hair). it amazes me how you can see the dates and mint letters on coins out in the field, i can barely see them when they are cleaned off inside! Take care of those young eyes of yours. Nice hunt, congrats! Larisa

The Washington Quarter is an Error, but not a CUD. It is a Lamination, where the metal "peeled" off the coin. I can see why you thought it was a cud, but I am convinced that it is a Lamination. And also, a die crack is raised, as the actual die was cracked and then struck into the coin.

    • @JDsVarietyChannel
      @JDsVarietyChannel  9 років тому +1

I think you are correct. I was just using terms like "cud" and "die crack" because they are the basic ones I'm most familiar with and was comparing to what I've seen. I have seen many lamination errors on cents that makes the coin look peeled, but not other coins. I guess that's what it could be. Interesting coin either way! Thanks for the comment. :-)

  • @dennispaulsen2408

The 1941 Quarter is not a rim cud, but a struck-through metal error. A small piece of metal was struck between the Obverse die and the blank planchet, leaving the small round clump of flatten metal impressed into the Obverse of the coin at 5:00 O-clock at the rim - neat!!

at 19:00 the hair clip your holding is not a broach. I still have my hair clip and use it. They came in 2 sizes, a large one and a small one. You are holding the larger of the two. They came in a set from Goody Hair products. I bought mine in 1980 and it was my favorite hair clip at the time. I would pull the top part of my hair and place the clip at the crown of my head (top back) to hold my bangs back out of my face. --- It is not/ was not gold plated. It was just a brass color. If you want me to post a picture of mine. I can do that. So it's not that old. (Well 30 years old.) :) I enjoyed your video very much!!

Kudos to youdos, Jon. Nifty finds in that one yard. I guess when you're in a good spot , it shows in the finds. Great, man!
I did some upgrading on my best numismatic find as well. Friday I hunted a log cabin home site from at least 1879. Just as night was coming on,I brought out an 1865 two cent piece in nice condition aside from some scaly light deposits. The relief is very good. Shortly after that, I dug two Indian cents, pretty scaly. The next night at another site I dug a 1919 S Lincoln cent. I'm giddy. That'll probably my best for the year OR LONGER.
My best before this was a 1902 IH cent with a remarkable green patina, so yeah, an upgrade.
7 inches of snow this afternoon but sixties forecast by Wednesday ,so maybe then I'll try for something from the log cabin site again. Good luck to you. 57

Steve Jones Just depends on what you're looking for. My machine (minelab e-trac) runs about $1,500, but you can still get a decent all purpose machine for about $300. In that range I would recommend the Garrett "Ace" series or maybe a fisher F44. If you wanted a slightly better machine go with a Garrett AT Pro, $600 and well worth the money. And I live in Tennessee too!

My brother's friend's parents live in a mid 1800s one room school house. They asked if I wanted to search for stuff. What do you think I will find? We are in Central PA. The ground is frozen now, so I will be detecting in the summer. I don't have a detector now. For my birthday, what would be a good, "cheap" one that is waterproof. It doesn't have to be too fancy.

+Dylan Bryson Waterproof meaning you can submerse the whole detector? Most coils are waterproof, but usually not the housing. If you need fully waterproof. The cheapest "good" detector would probably be the Garrett AT Pro, which is $600 brand new. It's good for coins & relics, and is submersible. Most detectors are fine in the rain if you have a rain cover, but you can't dunk them. lol. I can suggest other cheaper options if you don't need fully waterproof. You can get 10% off most machines from kellyco with my coupon code.

Ok. Thanks for the quick reply. I will mainly be hunting in small creeks that are only a few inches to a foot deep. I am just worried about dropping it. If I drop one that is not made to go fully underwater and pick it up wight away, would it still be fine? How about if I take apart the housing apart and plasti dip it?

If you are going into water, don't risk it, get one that's waterproof. The AT pro is a great all purpose machine, and you can use it for decades to come. Easy to learn too. I couldn't recommend any machine under the price of that one that I think would work for you. The AT pro does good in iron rich areas too, so it will help in the water and around old home sites, like you mentioned also. I have never taken a detector apart, so I couldn't say. But I do know, if you mess it up while trying to alter it. It will void the warranty. Some machines are sealed better than others. If you drop a cheap machine in the water for a few seconds it could short out. And the coils on some cheap machines don't function well in water, and you don't want o be sending them back to be repaired. My ultimate advice. If you want to do some water hunting, save up for the AT Pro. They're very popular too, so it will hold it's value well if you ever need to sell it.

+JD's Variety Channel Thanks. How about one under that criteria that is not waterproof.

For under the price of the AT pro, I would take a serious look at the Teknetics T2 (which I'm using in a lot of my videos now) I'm my opinion, it's the most powerful detector on the market for under $500. (It's almost $100 cheaper than the AT Pro) You could also take a look at the Fisher F-44, which is a solid machine that is weather proof (not fully waterproof) for $349. A lot of people like the entry level Garrett machines like the Ace-250 & Ace-350, though they would not be my pick. I like the 2 I mentioned above because they carry a 5 year warranty. And Garrett products usually only carry a 2 year warranty.

That "broach" is a hair barrette. I used to have one with a clasp like that.

Yes it is a barrette not a brooch. The flower, maple leaf thing is actually a shoe clip. Basically jewelry for a plain pair of shoes, probably from the 20s or 30s.

I have a feeling that the avdel A and the screw fastener object you thought to be a dime go together. I looked up avdel and its a fastener company.
