I thought this was an excellent and quite fun challenge to work with. My only suggestion, slow it down a bit. My problem wasn't re-creating this canoe. It was keeping up with the creator of the canoe. But props, overall fantastic tutorial.
Hi NiMa - this is a very helpful tutorial I am glad I found it...I reached 7:50 mins with no issues but when it comes to trimming the top workplanes I am stuck. I realise that the problem is that the outer-top edges of the canoe are not selectable when for e.g. I try to fillet them. This is probably why the workplanes get trimmed by the whole top surface of the boat and not the "overboard" parts only....Any tips how to overcome this, i.e. the stiched canoe surface to have "active" (for lack of better term) edges? I hope I explained the problem properly and thanks a lot
I'm getting an error when I go to thicken / convert to solid (approx. 15:00). Are there special settings for the thicken / offset function? Anything else I need to know? Thanks
I'm thinking about designing and building a cedar strip canoe someday. I'm wondering if after getting the shape right, can this program create cross section profiles for the forms which would be used to wrap the cedar strips? There would need to be a cross section every 12" or so.
+Matt KnowsThat Yes it can easily have the stations as planes and profile sketches. In my experience, if you are trying to fair the lines numerical, it makes a difficult job, because Inventors Bezier lines are not very good in a 2d sketch or a 3d sketch.. but the section profiles (stations) are the easy part.. regular 2d sketching on a plane.
Hey, im trying to make a bit simpler model, consisting of straight, rectangular-ish faces. no curves. Is there a way to cut the hull in couple pieces and unfold it like a sheet metal piece?
Can you tell how you went from a straight line to a curve while still being within the line tool (Shortcut im not aware of) when you first start creating the sketch circa 1.10 in the video
when I tried to loft according to the video it doesn't works! I am Using Inventor 2015. error it shows like "the operation had problems with specified rail curves not being smooth.Try to make the curves of the rail smooth across interior vertices." Please Help.
So if you were to use this in a real life situation. What would you do with your model? Use it for a large mold? Can you convert this to sheet metal pieces so you can have flat patterns? I'm doing a similiar project in which I'm modeling a single sheet boat and doing it in sheet metal so we can create life size templates. Then we are actually making the boat.
15:00 I have a problem with setting thickness. I don't know why but Error shows up... Can you suggest some solution for that? I use Inventor 2019 and can send you my itp. file
I have inventor professional 2013 at home and 2014 at school. If I model a part on the 2013 version will I be able to continue work on it on the newer version?
ok thanks. That was the original problem but all I need to do is put parts from both editions into an assembly so I shouldn't have to work on it again on the 2013 edition.
Wondering how one can predict the behaviour of the intersection curve option when not using faces but lines, as you do in your first use of that option..
I've spent hours rechecking all protection points, lines. Everything is exactly like yours, but I cannot get past the error below complaining that the rail curve is not smooth when I try to loft the bow. I've even tried a G2 to the bow on the Sketch2, but the G2 smoother gets a "Failed to create constraint". I don't see anyone else posting this problem. Stumped but would love to know why. Create loft feature failed Canoe.ipt: Errors occurred during update LoftSrf1: Could not build this Loft The attempted Loft operation had problems with the specified rail curve not being smooth. Try with a different rail or try to make the curves of the rail smooth across interior vertices.
I can follow it to 5.37, the surface of the hull is ready, then you select a middle line and extrude it symmetric, we are not in a sketch, how can you extrude ?
im unable to trim the surface at 8:07 ? what im doing wrong ? im selecting the canoe body as the cutting part and the extrusion above to remove , but my selection is not one by one like in the video , its the whole surface ...
Without sound is insanely frustrating to try and follow, been over the video 30 + times and still no result and have no idea whats happening half the time
4:37 at that time there's a erro in my inventor it say that "the attempted loft oper operation had poblems with the specified rail curve not being smooth. try whit a rail or try to make the curves of the rail smooth across interior vertices."
Ok, I know its been 5 years, but I had the same issue. Things I found out. I missed the fact she projected points from one plane to another, so when I went to constrain them while drawing, there was no constraint. I also missed when doing Sketch 2, where the curved lines have tangential constraints the the straight lines. Once I redid my sketch 2, and made all the constraints match, my loft worked like a charm. Hope this helps.
I did it, found my solution. So you don't go for 'quilt' and make whole structure solid at once, but go for 'face' and select individual surface and use 'join solid' command instead of 'new solid' and go on doing so for all surfaces. In case you didn't understand what I said you can contact me at gunner1141781@gmail.com
i found my solution...when i stiched the benches it stiched them on the boat , so it couldnt thicken only the canoe. I deleted the stich of the bench, to do it after the thickening part.
This is yet another canoe modelling video which fails to produce a "good canoe shape". It looks great and good enough for a rendering, but for a canoe enthusiast this is not even close. A canoe has a much more sophisticated shape than this. As of today there is to my knowledge no tutorial that goes through the steps to create a flawless shape. By "a flawless shape" we can consider the hallmark design and probably the most well known canoe of all times, the Prospector 16. Plan drawings of this is readily available. It's not an arbitrary lofted hull shape from a mid section to bow with two seats and a yoke... Cross sections at every 12" confirms the shape. If a fair lofted shape can be produced between these cross sections and connected to the bow and stern, then the model can be considered complete.
Your video is so great!! I know how complicated it can be… Looking forward to see more videos :)
You should add audio to this clip for bginners to instruct them how you created the tangent curve and other dimensions. It will be helpful.
i mean this contruct is not fot beginners :(

In inventor 2014, I have the same problem. But when I tried inventor 2013, there was no problem at all. Maybe that can help you.

Hi, great video. This is only a surface? How do i can do it a solid piece? With thickness? Thanks

when you select the second rail make sure you select the whole line at the bottom and not just the arc. That will ensure your loft works.

what comand do you use from 0:53 till 1:44?
