One of the "Carry On" series with a Roman setting equally accurate. The "Coccium in Cornovii" sounds marginally indecent but refers to Wigan, the butt of 1950s jokes.
It's fiunny when you hear people say how original Blackadder was, they obviously never heard of Up Pompeii which had already created a historical comedy with a discontented servant as it's main character.
Frankie Howerd - absolute genius and master of saucy innuendo. I am now sixty years of age but never tire of his humour, and stage presence, a man who simply owned the screen and could work an audience like no other. R.I.P Sir Francis ❤

One of the great costume farces. Frankie Howard at his best, in command of the double entendre and punning with abandon. RIP Frankie and good old fashioned historically-laced farce.
Thank you for the correction. It's a relief that people like you are on you tube to pick up on the minute mistakes other people make when sharing a happy thought. I'm sure you will derive some sort of joy yourself from managing to correct my spelling, but I also hope you manage to put your incisive spotlight on the fact that being a twat is harder than being on another happier plain where others simply want to share a thought on a what makes them still chuckle after so many years. @@carlozabbia1157

Produced by David Croft, who also produced, directed and co-wrote It Ain't Half Hot Mum, Dad's Army and Are You Being Served (amongst others). Perhaps not surprising he remembered actors he'd worked with before when he came to cast those series.
Yes, she played a role as Private Walker's sexy girlfriend in an episode of Dad's Army too. She was also a glamourous sales assistant to Mrs Slocombe in "Are you being served?"
Love when he says something towards a sexual innuendo and the audience starts laughing them he stops and gives a dirty look as if to say your filthy minds 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great series. Frankie Howerd is just laugh out loud. He's perfect for this and made the most of Talbot Rothwell's scripts. If anyone has got a copy of the feature film to upload that would round off the collection nicely.
Is there a branch of Grace Brothers in Pompeii? Mr. Rum old and Miss Brahms are in this episode, and Mrs. Slocombe and Mr. Mash have been in others. :-)
If there were ever a competition for the highest number of innuendos in one episode, this one will be right up there. No pun intended. XD Btw, why did they give that Jeremy Young guy such an enormous fake nose?!?
Frankie Howerd was a comic genius in the and in other things and this Program was far better than Black adder because unlike Rowin akinson Frankie Howerd could act
I am avid fan of British Comedy, but unless your teaching a class in Greek or Roman History, this show absolutely, BORING. Now I, Claudius in the 1980s mini series, that was awesome...
Wonderful Frankie Howerd making it look so easy. What a comedic talent

I watched this with my girlfriend who said "I like a double-entendre", so I gave her one!

So nice to see Miss Brahms and Mr. Rumbold.
OMG modern day women could learn a thing or two from these ladies.
Blimey! Wendy Richard was stacked.

Every inch a scrubber, our historic humour, like no other once.
Elizabeth Larner came into her own in this fantastic episode. Thanks for sharing.
I always had a thing for her, I found her sexy as heck in this show.
Loved this guy on the carry on film, "Carry On Doctor" he was so funny 😂
Took me a while to realise it was Wendy Richards. Beautiful.
RICHARD
@@carlozabbia1157 Plural, there were definately two of them....!!
Still the best after a these years. Pure genius without needing to touch the purile. Don't make them like that anymore
The puerile nature of it makes it great!
He does skirt about the fringes of the puerile, tho.
Wendy Richard! She was certainly a looker.
Yes, she played a role as Private Walker's sexy girlfriend in an episode of Dad's Army too. She was also a glamourous sales assistant to Mrs Slocombe in "Are you being served?"
This is very clever 👏 I have forgotten about this 😅
Frankie Howard was a bloody genius, in the Roman Sense and in general, came from Plebs back to this, both as good!!!

I just love the ad-lib stuff that comes out every now and then.
Wendy Richards looking stunning.

A very trippy show of British wit and humor.
The wonderfully talented Wendy Richard and Nicholas Smith: together again.
General Ponderous is a fine figure of a man! That handsome face, the deep voice!
Frankie Howard is so funny I like when he goes off his script well done 😂
He was never 'off script'.
It was actually all scripted, But Frankie delivered it so well.

my word a very young wendy richard, who went onto "are you being served" etc.
And Rumbold, too!
And Captain Ashwood.
Mollie Sugden is also in one later episode. (Capitals for names and titles please)
Frankie was an original ! Oh titter ye not . R.I.P .
Wendy very nearly revealed the lot!
So close indeed.
Robert Gillespie is particularly funny as a world weary desk sergeant in 'Whatever happened to the Likely Lads'.
I remember him in a TV series where he was main character as a cartoonist, Keep it in The Family.
Wendy's legs were to die for. This and the early seasons of AYBS proved that.
I never noticed her legs….😊😅😂
I came here for Wendy Richard
At around 2:15 the reference is to adverts for Schweppes fizzy drinks, which were famous in the 1970s.
I read recently that Frankie Howard wasn't too keen on the series. I think the part was made for him, no one else could have done it as good

. Boy not only do you have Wendy Richards is in this episode but so is Nicholas Smith. To bad they didn’t have Captain peacock as Caesar.
Mollie Sugden also appeared in one episode, another who went on to "Are You Being Served" - innuendo abounded there too.

@manfromnocky .... yes I think you have to be a Brit to appreciate this type of humour. If you have to explain the gags then there's no point.
