  • For PART TWO, hit • Frankie Howerd at the ... - and hit corneliusatloppers.wordpress.... for the STORY behind this. After nearly forty years in the business, Frankie suddenly found himself popular with a whole new YOUNG audience - courtesy of a series of post-ironic TEE-SHIRTS with his catch-phrases on!
Whilst driving a hack in the Seventies, I had Francis as a celebrity fare and - unaware of his paranoia - I casually remarked I hadn't seen him on TV in a while. I thought he was going to burst into TEARS.
Of course to the public, Frankie's career was CONTINUOUS - but when your agent hasn't rung you in a YEAR...
Nevertheless - this shows that, fifteen years later - he still HAD it. All of his ooohs and stumbles were SCRIPTED - and Mr Howerd knew EXACTLY how to TIME them.
    A true comic genius.

Of all Frankie's in front of audience appearances, this that he did towards last years of his life in front of Oxford Union for me is most cherished and just pulls at the heartstrings so much. Cause he is the epitome of a professional comedian class act but in front of a young audience who are interacting with him literally loving the whole routine but beyond that, him as a person. To see the happy faces and smiles in that young crowd that this event was back then adoring him is such a wonderful thing and the volume of cheers when he throws in his famed catchphrases. There is nothing forced from that crowd it is sheer appreciation for a comedian by then been in showbusiness for many decades and he so deserved that love from the Oxford Union. I wish they would repeat this on TV, l literally don't think it has been since.

Barry Cryer said ..’Wherever Frankie Howerd played, there were bums on seats and that was the safest place for them’
Not unkind because Howerd played up his dampness, it was a huge part of his brilliant act and very endearing. A fabulous comic.

Never knighted. In England, if you have true talent, you have to wait until your nearly dead before you’re recognised. Anyway, to those of us who loved him, he was a SIR

The greatest stand up in the English language of all time. He absolutely brought the house down at the Oxford Union. Compare any of the others, any of them and you will see that they didn't get that reaction. RIP Sir Francis of Howerd. We are still laughing after all these years.

Incredible how Frankie Howerd became Britain’s first great radio comedian in the immediate post-war years before anyone had a TV and here he is over 40 years later playing live stand up to students.
He never went out of fashion.

Great respect for Frankie, He was not only a very funny guy but great to talk to.
He took the trouble and travelled all the way to
Sarawak ( Borneo) to entertain us 1965 .
    This we have never forgotten

He was so nervous that night though followed it through beautifully. He was a comic genius, influenced us all who were fortunate to witness his wit, banter at the time to have a sense of humour and laugh no matter what life throws. RIP Francis, you will alway's be remembered in our hearts forever...

Just saying "no" or "no, don't" is enough to make them laugh. Made me laugh too! His brilliance in Up Pompeii was that it looked ad libbed, which was genius whether it was scripted or not,

This man is what everything means.. The time, the place, the mindset, the humour, everything... The late 20th century will be looked upon as the pinnacle of human existence, and Frankie Howard IS the Pinnacle of that. The innocence caught up in knowing.. Just fabulous and will NEVER be repeated. 09/2023

Hello, Thank you very much for responding. Yes, the classical piece is played at the very beginning, over footage of Oxford University, and also at the very end as Mr Howerd bows and waves to the audience applause. It is a beautiful Classical piece, and I have been trying to find the title for many years. I'd be deeply grateful if you could please assist. Thank you.

Awwww, at the start, even though hes doing it in joke form, you can tell he doesn't want them to linch him for doing old jokes :( You can tell how nervous he poor guy! :( Absolute Legend in the comedy game. It angers how they are more interesting in talking about his 'flaws' now days rather than his comedy legacy. Same with Tony Hancock, Sid james and Benny hill. Their flaws are nothing compared to celebs (and royals) now -_- We all have flaws even the ones who make those damned documentary's.

    • @GrilloTheFlightless
      @GrilloTheFlightless 3 роки тому

He went to the states to try his hand on broadway and flopped tremendously. The American audience and critics just didn’t get him, sadly. He had a close brush with Hollywood in the Sgt Pepper movie as Mr Mustard and failed, although that was mainly because the film was awful, with or without Frankie. But he really was fantastic.

I do not wish to upset or belittle anyone but the days of the true naturally funny human has lone gone today as for as im concerned.
frankie howard, tommy cooper, benny hill amongst them never realised how they effected peoples lives with their humour and warmth.
they were always nervous before a performance in case the public found them unfunny...they could never except any comments about how brilliant they were because they never saw it in themselves....how wrong could they be.
my sense of humour must have died because most of todays stand ups and the like try to be funny which just does not work.....they are not funny....they do not make me laugh and to be blunt i find most of them to be embarrising.none of them have a funny bone in their body unlike the pros who we have now sadly lost to never ever be replaced.
frankie you will never be replaced.....impossible.....you are sadly missed.
