I think a lot of people forget just how much a talented and genuinely funny performer he was,... He nurtured his own unique style of comedy , that was broad of tone , an full of double entendre and saucy innuendo,...the mood and tone of shows like Up Pompeii was perfect for his camp lucid style, and non-stop one liners .....he's still missed to this day
Frankie Howerd was a great performer with his own individual style. This was shown perfectly in the original 'Up Pompeii' series from the 1969/70 era. There episodes were outstanding because of Frankie, the directors close-ups, and the excellent writing of Tolbot Rothwell. This follow-up is a poor imitation of the original. Only a few embers remain.
Frank always worked best to a live audience, so unfortunately this canned laughter debacle doesn't live up to expectations. He's pure class though, as always, but this version of 'Up Pompeii' isn't a patch on what it was XX years earlier.
He had heart problems during the last 2 years of his life, but this was made even worse when at Christmas 1991 on a holiday in the Amazon he contracted a virus, which really did more damage to his heart.
The script was weak compared to the original Tolbert Rothwell material. Plus the original supporting cast missing here - makes me realize how important they were to the overall success of Up Pompeii!
@@pbworld7858 Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Williams were both Carry On regulars. Williams' mother was shocked to see Hawtrey was an "out and proud" gay man, as her own son never thought of doing that kind of thing, of course.
The BBC were originally approached to make this revival episode but turned it down - hence ITV stepped in & LWT made it. There is no canned laughter because LWT never used this for their comedies - it was shown before a live audience.
What they failed to do was watch the previous ones... No-one is funny in this. I expect Mr Howard was under pressure and even he doesn't capture the free spirit that made the original endearing. Plus it isn't a live audience so they took away his forte and ruined it. Shame, it is unwatchable.
Not that bad, still some funny moments, think Frankie had slowed down and his energy was what made the originals so good, would like to have seen some more of the original cast back as well, Lurcio's mistress Ammonia and her son Nauseous for example.

Pure Class and sadly missed. The One and Only Frankie Howerd!
Had he’d not died this would have been a hit sitcom in the early 90s. Frankie became a big cult icon to the student generation of the time.
He died a year later what a fabulous entertainer a great loss to classic british comedy you live on in my UA-cam playlist :-)
And in MINE! and on DVD also
Comic genius never dies .
Still one of the greats and still missed
Unique. Loved & missed. RIP
THIS JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW BAD T.V. PROGRAMMES HAVE SUNK TO, TODAY... THIS IS ENTERTAINMENT AT ITS BEST.!!! ABSOLUTLY BRILLIANT..!!!
Brilliant funny clever sadly missed RIP frankie

It's a shame we didn't get to see the spouses & children of Nausius & Erotica.
Claudius is amazing! Well done to Barry James
Just realised at the end , that was officer Crabtree…😂😅😊
“Ah waz pissing by the window an I heard a shat”
Frankie looked a bit ill here, its sad to think just a year later he was gone
He had heart problems during the last 2 years of his life, but this was made even worse when at Christmas 1991 on a holiday in the Amazon he contracted a virus, which really did more damage to his heart.
Brilliant parody of Claudius.
So good and funny.show old ones again
That was pitiful. Frankie and the other cast did their best but whoever wrote that had no idea.
and known to the rest of the cast..... as Sharon LOL
+John Tinsley Great line!! :)
"Pure Comedy Genius"
26:08 funniest bit in the show.
This feels more like the Fankie would have done it in the first place, if he'd been given full reign.
Not a patch on the original BBC series.
Canned laughter doesn't help..so obvious.very American .what happened to the live audiences

Frankie hated Larry Grayson, he said he stole his act..
Kenneth Williams felt the same about the pair of them.
@@MatgoStyles I hate to think what Charles Hawtrey thought of the three of them.

The funniest poof in a straight world.
Tango man ambiguous
hahaha
Good comedy👍👍
Shame about the laugh track.......pitiful 😖

1+qq
The production value may be better but the show doesn't hold a candle to the original far as the comedy is concerned and I do love Frankie Howard.
This series was a parody of itself. The canned laughter is just awful.
Such a pity as Howerd was a great comedian.
LWT never ever used canned laughter for their comedies.
@@johnhastings7841 sounds like it is but if you say so.
Not the same is it?
No, this is not funny. The original was the best

Canned laughter is horrendous , making it unwatchable .
