What is a heteronym? A homophone?

- Learn why we need the International Phonetic Alphabet: words that looks like they should rhyme don’t rhyme, heteronyms and homophones are common. English is not a phonetic language, and the IPA helps us know exactly what sound we’re talking about.

You're always great!
Thanks for sharing these important info about the "homophones". Honestly, the word itself sounds weird lol.
I've been learning English for ages until I got an incredible accent by learning the right and appropriate pronunciation of every single word, but actually, I still don't know how to read the symbols, which is something very necessary to know as an advanced English learner.
Again, thanks a million Rachel!
Thank you sooo much

I worked for an advertising agency and we had to get pronunciations right. I worked for the world's first, biggest, best, television & radio, news network. We had to get pronunciations, right. Which people don't get right. Ofen, enough. I mean, often. No I don't! And Americans keep saying Herb's, too often. Only the British use, Herb's. Because that's where they all live! And I'm quite sure they are all employed. I mean. I am quietly assured they are employed. Did I just say the same thing?
I went to the Donald J Chump School of Cofeve. And I got a Sir Terrific Cat..
Hi Rachel. My name is Elias, I am a brazilian. I'm learning how to speak inglish and I have a doubt (actually, I have several). Here in Brazil we say "au, au, au" when we play the rule of animals (dogs in this case). How do you (Americans) pronounce this sound ?
please can you do video of the most important hard word in american english
Rachel`s Take a course for the basic level too, I really want to learn !!! ;-)
Hi Rachel I'm Nancy, I'm a teacher and I teach English I would like to clarify some doubts with you if you don't mind really.. Does these words "putting" "cutting"actually exist in English. Is that correct or its just put and cut for all the forms of tenses??
I just wanted to add that the term heterophone is often used instead of heteronym. This is because while the sound is different, the spelling is the same. As in homonym, where the spelling and sound are the same, heteronym implies BOTH are different, which is not the case.
Thanks.

Rachel, please, can you explain to me what does exactly you mean by the following: "English is not a phonetic language".
Hi! Sure. In phonetic languages, the spelling of words corresponds with how those words are pronounced. So, depending on how a word is spelled, you would always be able to look at the word and know how to say it correctly. Unfortunately, English does not work that way. The way we spell our words does always help you know how to say them. Written and spoken English is very different. This is why it can be very helpful to learn the International Phonetic Alphabet. Here is a playlist that can help you with that: ua-cam.com/play/PL76E3034895AF6FF4.html
i love you so much from Egypt 😍😍
👍
Hi Rachel, the word "Principle" /ˈprɪnsəPl/, but I hear like
/ˈprɪnsəBl/ . The second P is pronounced like B. Is that correct ?
Often, yes when people are speaking it may sound like that. However, if you pronounce it as a "b" sound, it can have a different meaning. It can mean the person responsible for running a school (i.e the "headmaster").
Azren the Language Nerd
Thank you
Luu Tai no problem :-)
hi Rachel, how to pronounce VALUABLES ?
Value-bulls, V-[āl]-you-[bo͝ol]z
Can you answer to me: How many common homophons are there in English?
Rachel, may you teach us how to pronounce the word "history"?
Obviously a video reply would be better, but it sounds something like "HISS-TREE" with stress on the "HISS". :)
OH MYYY GOD VERY NICE DRESS
HI PLZ CAN U HELP ME TO PRONOUNCE A BECAUSE I SPEAK FRENCH AND I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM .
What sounds are hard for you in English? I am fluent in both French and English, maybe I can point you in the right direction?
Can i reduce k and p sounds in these sentences ? ( bank disguised ...; bank robbers ...; camp safely ...; camp before ... limp due ... ) Thank you so much !
Hey Kim. With the examples in your comment (bank disgusted, bank robbers, etc) would generally not be reduced. However, apart from "Bank robbers" these are not commonly used expressions, and you'd never really use them in English.
Thank you for your help !
My English is not good.
Kim Lam no worries. Keep practicing :) How long have you been studying English?
Thank you for your advice ! i've been studying english since 4 mounths. ahh, in my examples, can i stop K and P sounds or i have to spoke clearly K and P sounds.
Kim Lam no problem :) You can stop them. Make them un-aspirated.
WHAT IS "ONE TO ONE RELATIONSHIP"??
