Both pronunciations that you're probably thinking of are ok. I don't make a choice consciously when I'm talking.

You're awesome

:)
tnx sooooo mUch
I like your teaching very much! Is it possible for you to add how to prounce full vs fool. ;)
It's great video because she looks so beautiful
Thank you Vladimir!
thank you very much Rachel , U letter is the most confusing pronounced letter in english
if may i ask , is there any rule for pronounced it ....
Is there a rule for the „u“ pronounciation in words like: duty, during, or cute?
in british English it’s pronounced as djuti or djuring and kjut and in AE it’s a „normal“ U in duty pr during, but but cute it’s pronounced the same like Kjut. I hope you know what I’m trying to say😂
I understand what you're asking.
Title was kind of misleading 😂 it looked like she was going to address the rules to pronounce “u”.
What is the right way to pronounce "either" or "neither"?
Or how do you choose which way to pronounce them at a certain moment?
Hi Rachel! Thanks for the great channel.
As I noticed some native Americans, like from east coast, pronounce the u in words such as student, as "oo" (like in fool) and some do it as "ju".
Did I get it right? and which one is more common?
Read or watch some videos about jod-dropping
👍
Thanks for the video! But how would you pronounce "U" in "Lingunex" (proper name) ?!
Rachel, is it true that with words such as suit, super, ... american always pronounce the letter u as "u" while british pronounce it as "ju"? Could u pls verify that? Thanks!!
Hi miss Rachel.. I’m sorry but I don’t think looking for a native English to say the word is the solution for my pronunciation ! I want to know it exactly like how the native does. Thanks 🙏
Thanks Rachel :)
I have Q please, your name is Rachel , why when I want to say it ,it's look like contains T letter and ch like Chicago :)
❤❤
Is there another way to spell the U as in up? Because I have a word that uses two Us but each are pronounced differently. Kullux [koo•Luks]
Hi! Yes, spelling doesn't really help sometimes with English. The UH as in BUTTER vowel can be spelled like: 'tough' or 'ton'.
Thank you, Rachel. Nevertheless, the pronunciation is done quite fast. I expected to see an 'u' pronunciation much slower and more distinct though.
Rafael Padron Yes, this was a different kind of video, showing how English is not phonetic!! I have a video for how every sound is made in detail! You can find them all here: English: How to Pronounce [ɑ] AH vowel: American Accent
Hey Rachel❤, this is Jay from India.
In the video (1:32), Here "suite" sounds like "sweet". why it is like that? does really the two different words have same sound?
How can we easily recognise the word whether its suite or sweet when someone says? Bcas, its sounds same.
Yes! These two words are homophones, meaning they have the same sound, but different spellings and meanings.
@@rachelsenglish Thankyou Rachel 💓
the title is how to pronunciate. when i watched the video i find she is saying open dictionary or listen to native speakers 😅
Canadians should cheek this out, not oat.
I Know , I KNOW the BEAUTY of THIS WOMAN makes me CRAZY
Hi, this is not a joke. But what is the difference between but and butt? Apparently there's no difference? I'm asking because "but" is a fairly common word and wouldn't want to be saying butt instead. But maybe they're really pronounced exactly the same?
+Voyd Void The difference is that the word 'but' is sometimes said very quickly, and therefore may sound like the vowel is more of a schwa sound, whereas 'butt' will almost always be a content word and will use the UH as in MOTHER vowel or [ʌ] vowel and not the schwa.
How would you pronounce Urien?
Shame on who ever created the English language, and shame on us all for not changing it to something that make logical sense. At least like it's European cousins 'italian' 'spanish' and 'french'
Wow english is like 3 languages in one. The written, the oral language and the IPA. So it's expected to memorize the sound of each word :(, that's a lot of data, instead of bytes a lot of kilobytes are need for each word in my brain. Why is not simple as spanish where there is only one language and very few rules and you don't need to ask some native speaker to pronounce or spell words :(
Am I crazy or there are people who pronounce the phone /ʌ/ more closed than others?
The letter Uu gives the /u/ and the schwa not /ju/. This is the only letter which its name can’t give a vowel sound. The /j/ is a consonant. There are two reasons:
a yellow car✅
an yellow car ❌
It can’t be syllabic by itself. The other diphthongs can be syllabic separately from each other.
/ɛi/ /ɑi/ /oi/ /æu/✅
/eɪ/ /aɪ/ /ɔɪ/ /aʊ/❌ These symbols are all outdated and wrong, they just confuse people
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on IPA for this.
y is U so different from others languages
How to Pronounce the Letter U
like
Excuse me, I am having a hard time pronouncing "Tustin". Thanks in advance!
+Diogo2065 Are you talking about the city? The first syllable is stressed and uses the UH as in MOTHER vowel, the second syllable is unstressed and uses an unstressed IH as in SIT vowel. Both Ts in this word are True Ts. Hope that helps!
Yes! Thank you so much for helping!
Excuse me i am having trouble pronouncing the U in "Why the fuck does this disabled channel exist"
iiTubbyToaster
I don't know how to pronunce cancer, but she will be more than happy to help you with that specific word.
Owain Davies
I don't get it!
You can pronounce U as you like..there are no rules..
O Man ke kar rahe hain aap
Why is english like that why why why ??!??!?!?!?!
sorry, I still did not get it, why do you have to make a video to tell us something we already know?
your video telling us nothing, because I still don't know how to pronounce the letter u.
your video content is not related to the title.
There are many pronunciations patterns that can explain the examples Rachel offers. For example, in the word , we can expand the pronunciation rule to unstressed syllables almost always reducing to /ɪ/ or /ə/. Look at the words minute, pilot, infinite, Karen, fortunate. In each instance, the second, unstressed syllable is reduced to /ɪ/. Forget about the spelling! This is not instructive at all, in my humble opinion ;)
Keep it simple.. You state dictionary reference for pronunciation then later on you talk about a diphthong. Why not keep it simple? Just looking to say the word right not learn the semantics of pronunciation. You could have made two videos from this one. 1. The sounding of the vowel. 2. The semantics of the vowel with all the highlights you displayed.
By the way, it's seems like a lecture you're presenting. Did you mean to come off as some kind of Professor? If you are then you did. I wasn't coming here for a lecture. I watched because I was trying to save some time in my busy day. 91,023 views back in 7/12/2012. Not promising with only a total of 794 likes and dislikes. 761 yes 33 no. I really think you could do better, friendlier, more personal as if I was really there just as a real person and not a college classroom of 200 students who are just there for a credit.
