No. The speaker design has a lot to do with frequency spectrum AND dynamics AND power handling AND harmonic distortion structure AND time domain response (tightness at DIFFERENCE frequencies). The Dynamics and Time domain response performance affect a LOT of the feel.
damn, that engl cab sounded like a chainsaw! i love it! about this video and it's conclusion, i hear glenn fricker yelling on top of his lungs: "I TOLD YOU SO!"
Man! In my opinion, that Diezel cab is THE SHIT! Really aggressive sounding, punchy and immediate low mid transients. But we all have different tastes.
Great video as usual. Besides Glenn Fricker (he has been screaming from the mountain tops about speaker choice and the tone provided) this is the only video I can recall in which the speakers are talked about in how greatly they can change sound (even with the same amp) Good to have guys like you providing data for people to make an informed decision that are they thinking of making a purchase. Love whay you do and keep it rollin!
Personally I think the CAB is the most important it all comes down to what tone you want and prefer. in my case I play a lot of metal/hardcore so I own the standard Mesa 412 cab and Peavey 6505+ boosted with a Ts9 for that extra crunch. It's a beast of a setup and is iconic which can't be beat. Another reason being you can almost bypass any amp with a OD pedal or different preamp options. like I always say in the end its all personal preference. Great video Kyle! 🤘🏻
Thank you for proving what I've been telling people for years! However, there are two more steps to take (for 2 more videos): the same amp, the same cab, but keep changing the speaker (in the same position in a 4x12). And also, same amp, same actual speaker in different cabs to isolate that difference. Then you'll have the definitive series on the topic.
Thanks Kyle! I've always known that the cabinet is the most important piece of gear in achieving your sound. I also have a number of amps and cabs (not quite as many as you!) and I'm frequently doing the old switch-aroo with things like tube swapping, pick-up swapping, etc, and none of it makes as big a difference as a cab and or speaker swap. Thanks so much for the vid bro!
On your recommendation I purchased a XXX. I'm running that through an old and well used 1960 loaded with V30's and GB's in an X pattern. I absolutely love it.
Awesome comparison. I liked the Engl and the Diezel the most. Not that the other two cabs sounded bad, just my own personal taste. Thanks for this vid 👍🏼 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Thank you so much for making this video man! Probably the most important and helpful video for guys like me shopping around and saving money for a good amp head and cab. I'm trying so save up and get the best thing for me the first time instead of settling for something cheaper.
I was surprised how much I liked the g12h30s. I know evh uses them in their cabs but now I understand why, it pairs really well with the 5150. Gonna have to get a set
100% right answer. I've done a number of speaker swaps and moved them from cab to cab. Quite amazing how you can get a huge improvement by putting a overly scooped amp with a mid focused speaker and get the punch back. Or a bright amp with a dark speaker, and then if there's still some boxiness, shift those speakers into a physically bigger cab, and the amp/cab combo comes alive. Shift what you thought was a punchy speaker into a front loaded cab, and all the punch and low end disappears. But a different speaker sounds amazing. Of course, its much easier to find an amp your happy with and just try 10 different cabs until you find the one that sings. Speaker swaps are painfully time consuming but rewarding.
I just get whatever and see if I can make it work. After seeing Glenn's videos about cab quality/material vs. the speakers, I'll keep my 1960 because it can't be much worse than a Behringer cab and just roll some speakers.
Really great comparison Kyle! When I'd go into the studio to start tracking guitars we'd test different amp heads and how they'd mix together, then different cabinets and speakers until we got the sound we were happy with. It really highlighted how much each piece of gear would change the sound of your tone, and cabs made a huge difference. Cool comparison, I'm sure this vid took a lot of work to put out, so thanks for the effort! 💪
Liked the mesa and engl cabs the best. I got a dv77 paired with a g12h in my evh 2x12 and love it. Like to have a mesa cab for sure with two dv77s and maybe some creambacks or even these g12h speakers.
Kyle, you'll be surprised to see how better can sound that Herbert through a front loaded Diezel cab. Great content, for me the cab is the most important part in a signal chain. It was shocking switching from a 1960 to a Mesa Trad. Massive difference.
It is Einstein. I was listening this while doing something else and was like "Herbert 50? wow" but nope, Einstein, though it is nice and quite underrated.
Most of my cabs are cross patterned with V30’s and G12K85s. On there own I do not prefer but cross patterned those 2 speakers sound great to me. Thank you sir for making these videos \,,/,
Id pair the omega cab with the engl cab. Mesa cabs always ended up being too boomy for me. A marshall 4x12 with a v30, g1265, greenback, and white back 75 is my dream cab. Currently running a carvin legacy cab with eminence legend, swamp thang and jensen mod 50 and blackbird works pretty good.
I thought the Engl Cab had my favorite sound. I thought the Mesa Cab sounded a little deadened, the second cab sounded forward in the mix but was coloring the tone in the way I didn't like, and nothing stood out to me about cab 4. The Engl Cab definitely gave the type of sound I like.

I don't have many cabinets but I own a bunch of IR. Currently I use a combination of creamback H and DV77. Not all amp sim sounds good with that IR. When that happens, I switch to different IR usually from the same manufacturer from which the amp sim based of. Many times I find a better tone. After watching this video, I realize that also happen with real amp and cab.
I've seen a demo with a entry level amp paired with a nice cab and a high end head with a cheap cab and the entry level head with the better cab had a better sound.
What I experimented over the years is Eminence and Celestion speakers sound very different. The Omega Granophyre sounds rather interesting to my ears. As you said Kyle, the Mids sit very well into the mix. The Omega V12M-65 cabinet sounds also fine. It reminds me of my Peavey 1x12 loaded with a Celestion G12-65. To me it's the best speaker I've ever tried, whatever the cabinet... 1x12, 2x12 and also 4x12. I own three of them!
Kyle i recently got myself a white EVH cab, How would you say that one compares sound and eq wise to an ENGL and Mesa , i play it through a Peavey invective if that info helps
I was the same way about amps and cabs. I used to get the cheapest cab in GC's used section. Now I try to tell people not to spend 200 bucks on a new cheap cab no matter what the speaker is to use with an expensive amp. Now I treat it like furniture and spend more for the build quality
I did the same was running my amp through a Lil orange head and decided I wanted a bigger cab , got a 200 peavey on a impulse buy and was like wtf the Lil orange cab sounded way better for 100 , returned the peavey and got the mt15 amp and cab combo , I was running a joyo zombie through the orange , peavey and my prs cab and the 200 peavey cab was definitely the worst , quality definitely pays , couldn't imagine running my prs mt 15 through the peavey 40watt it has enough watts for it but It would of sounded like crap , so muddy , good cabs or speakers sound tight and punchy while still having a good low end. Oh man I gotta give the cab shootout to the Mesa. Mesa cabs have always been top notch to my ears. It must the cab construction because V30's sound very different in other cabs.
OK I got an Invective MH and an ENGL Fireball 20. Boy, do they sound similar through the same cab/ IR. They do "feel" different, that's hard to explain with the simple words I know😆

Yep, that's generally what happens. The mic is very much it's own voice.filter, and you really need to mess with it to get it anywhere close to the in the room sound
Hey Kyle, Awesome work. I am about to redo some of my 4x12 cabinets and am usually a V30 guy. I bought 4 DV77 and 4 VM1265. I was debating of of putting whether to pair 2 V30s or 2 VM1265s with the DV77--any thoughts on which combo may sound better? Thanks!
Hi Kyle! Have you ever tried HESU cabs and their Demon speakers? Curious to get your opinion on them. I’m on the market for a 2x12 cab and even tho I’d love a Rectifier cab, they are pretty much non existent here in Sweden. Hesu seem more accessible.
Love this video! It just highlights what I already knew but its displayed in a perfect format and easy to take it all in. But here's the funny thing... I'm a long time v30 guy. The v30 in this video was my least favorite. Lolololol. I've been interested in exploring other options. This video just confirmed it for me. Its time to try something new.
Is your v30 marshall cab a 16ohm mf280? Those have a unique v30 in them (t5321) that in the mf cab beats the Mesa to my ear (but not as aggressive in my opinion)
It's all about application, tone is subjective and always will because we as guitarist are always trying to achieve a "genre tone". Speakers obviously deliver sound but the construction also makes a difference in the delivery of the sound slant vs. straight, the amps obviously vary from one to another and that's why people flock to amp modelers so they can use different profiles for different tones ex. Clean, crunch, lead tones, and that's why amps have the biggest to do with your tone, granted your playing style and hands 👏 also play a big role because all the gear in the world can't make you sound good if you play like 💩
Anyone liking their Harley Benton 2x12 vintage. I have a Dsl20hr and a 01 single recto head. The Harley is my only cab. I can't find a useable metal tone with either amps.. My line6 spider3 75 watt combos insane red channel is still my go to for heavy palm mute riffing, Metallica, ECT. Either my cab sucks, or both my amp head's suck. I hope it's the cab
@@belligerentamateur kooL thanks , well i am shall build part of the cab like a wide vader or mesa, and then the other part like a narrower deeper engL , if i ever get it done, i shall let yall know and/or try it out.
The way I would simply describe is this. The cabinet defines your overall EQ spectrum, while amps are more defining the "feel".
No. The speaker design has a lot to do with frequency spectrum AND dynamics AND power handling AND harmonic distortion structure AND time domain response (tightness at DIFFERENCE frequencies). The Dynamics and Time domain response performance affect a LOT of the feel.

The cab is everything…I liked the Diezel with the G12H30’s the most…the Mesa I didn’t care for…That Omega had some huge mids…I didn’t realize how boxy the 65’s sounded..not bad, just a different thing…That Diezel was the best though…I may have to grab a set of G12H30’s….
Great stuff! I have a peavey 6505+ head and a cabinet with celestian greenbacks in it. It sounds great in the room but when I mic it up with my sm57, it doesn't sound anything like how it does in the room and it drives me insane lol.
Yep, that's generally what happens. The mic is very much it's own voice.filter, and you really need to mess with it to get it anywhere close to the in the room sound
Hey Kyle,
Awesome work.
Reckon I like the old engl v30 the most. Remarkably balanced.
Edit- interesting to hear you thought the exact opposite. Perhaps I'm having a stroke.
I have a vintage 30 Harley Benton and it doesn’t even sound close to mesa at all
Hey... what do you think about this valve (tube) shortage?
Love this video! It just highlights what I already knew but its displayed in a perfect format and easy to take it all in. But here's the funny thing... I'm a long time v30 guy. The v30 in this video was my least favorite. Lolololol. I've been interested in exploring other options. This video just confirmed it for me. Its time to try something new.
Is your v30 marshall cab a 16ohm mf280? Those have a unique v30 in them (t5321) that in the mf cab beats the Mesa to my ear (but not as aggressive in my opinion)
Surprisingly in the amp comparison I prefer the Engl 🤔
Also my favorite cab was the Engl
Thanks, I just found out I like Engl ! Lol
Is it maybe a diezel Einstein 50 not a Herbert 50
Now I know why I can’t find a mode four cab lol
Man… that is striking.
so how do i build the perfect cab? i have 6 different speakers. may get more.
There is no "perfect" cab as it's completely subjective to the player and the tones they seek.
@@belligerentamateur kooL thanks , well i am shall build part of the cab like a wide vader or mesa, and then the other part like a narrower deeper engL , if i ever get it done, i shall let yall know and/or try it out.
Cab and speaker define everything.
