I still rock the sheffields in my ms412. They dont sound nearly as clear at low volumes compared to say a greenback or something vintage inspired, however these ms412 serve a great purpose which is huge volume and tone on a budget. I ran a 300 watt randall titan with mine and those harsh solid state tones can get bright. With my tube Blackstar head, it seemed much more able to eq out the harshness.

I used an ADA MP-1 in a Boss NS-2 sent to a clean Real Tube II preamp on clean. I used the stereo fx loop with my Rocktron Replifex and Intellifex. The power amp was MosValve. I used the angled 4x12 with 1290s on one side and another peavey cab with G12 K -85 with the 2nd cab. I used parametric eq in the Rocktron Replifex to fine tune the sound going to the poweramp. Sounded killer

I’ve had a Peavey 412MS since around 2000. Metal grill just like this one. I re-did the tolex in white. Hate the speakers but really nice construction. Looking to put some new speakers in. You gave me some good ideas! I also want to take the screwed in casters off and put in some pop in casters.

Debatable. Kyle only loves amps that he can get to sound like the only sound he likes. Kyle is like a 4 year old that hates all food except for chicken nuggies and easy mac but in his case it's that way with amp heads and speaker cabs. It's still a halfway decent channel despite it's enduring flaw.

I had the MS412 over a decade ago that I paired with the Carvin MTS3200 head. it rocked. the sheffields are brittish inspired, Same speakers in the 5150 EVH used. They have a top end sizzle that replicates a blown speaker. (Thanks Eddie). I liked those speakers but wanted to put Celestion GT-12-75s in it. For the basement price of 200 all day long its a good cab.

I took care of the problem with the Sheffield's by using 2 celestion g12m 70's with them. The celestion is a little louder than the Sheffield and the g12m is known as a very beige sounding speaker. Works well though. It's basically all mids.

put a high pass filter cut with recessed in cab adjustable knob on the speaker make sure it has a more complex circuit and not just some cap soldered on or something. this way you can adjust the amount of fizz you desire if any at all.

i took the grill off to get really close to the speakers with a mic. if you point the mic 45 degree towards the cone where it meets the capsule, it´s getting much sweeter in tone there with less fizzle sizzle. i send a quad preamp powered through a small tube amp to this box, which fits well cause the quad has so much mids you are glad the speaker smoothes it out a bit. and the format gives a lot of low end when you go in with big power amps... I had the peavey classic 60/60 to power the quad and that was very loud with 120 watts. this box is quite unforgiving and direct, yes!

    Hey Kyle,
Cool video today, I like this amp switch thing, it’s really cool to hear the differences between the heads and how their characteristics react to the cabinet. I have to agree the vintage channel on the dual rectifier was the best sounding out of the four amps you played with that Peavey cab, it had loads of bottom like you would expect for sure also the mids sounded nice as well. I just bought a new Peavey 2z12 50 watt with the greenbacks in it, haven’t had a chance yet to hear the cab with my 6262 but I think today will be the day I hook it up and get some chugs going. Keep up the great content, I’ll be watching for your next upload 🤘

The back panel might be particle board. I know my Peavey 430A came with all birch ply except for the (removable) back panel, which was particle board. I actually replaced it with MDF because particle board is awful and I wanted to get rid of the big hole for the stereo jack plate and install a simple mono jack. Sounds great now. It's at least 1960A spec and as it came I think it was a 1960A clone but with a particle board back panel. The 430A was marketed as a cab for the early 2010s amps like the Butcher, 3120, XXX II, and 6534+ with EL34s

I use this cab with ultra plus 120. I swapped 2 of the 1290s for V30s in an x pattern. My secret weapon is the amp tweaker defizzerator for the fizz, and a bbe sonic stomp thru the fx loop to "take the blanket off". Shit sounds pretty damn good. I have a short camera quality video if you wanna peep it. Great video. I agree that alone the speakers are lackluster to say the least lol

My 412MS B of this style is an early release, it has a Birch ply back and cats tongue tolex. While I disagree with your opinion of the 1290 being terrible, your assessment of it’s characteristics is on point. These are not necessarily bad characteristics, the bright fizz helps cut through a room when there is a bassist with a loud rig. The “scooped” mids is not really that scooped. The top of the mid range is just tame but the lower mid rolls into the low end smoothly. The A cab really only makes these characteristics more obvious, with the angle of the top baffle directing the internal reflection downward thus creating weird standing waves inside the box. The best thing anyone can do to an A cab is batt the back with some extra loft batting.

I used to pair mine (which I still have) with a Marshall JCM800 and that thing sounded great. There are 2 versions of the sheffields they put in. I believethe 1st Gens were made to EVH specs and became the 5150 so they sounded great. Their power is mid range not bass and thats ok there shouldn't be a lot of bass in them anyway. Mine are a serious workhorse and have been through many many gigs large and small and have barely any damage on them but THEY ARE VERY HEAVY!

  • @NoelFernandes

Sheffield 1200 was designed to sound better at full volume. The main problem with the old eddie's greenbacks were the lack of loudness. Greenbacks didn't get that punchy sound at high volumes. So, the sheffields were designed to sound when pushed at full volume, like eddie's greenbacks sounds at lower volumes. Sheffield doesn't like to be pushed at low, moderate volumes. The same concept with blackshadows (celestion era), designed to sound like 80's v30 sounds at lower volume.
When you push the sheffield to loudness, the "sizzle" goes away and the punchy mids take place. Without spiting that v30's resonant high mids.

Peavey OEM speakers turned me off Peavey gear for many years. I had to swap out some Black Widows for Celestion speakers (I think they were 120watt 12” speakers, maybe Lead 120s?) … then my Peavey 212 was a very fine cab. I think any Peavey guitar amp from the 80s would probably have benefitted from a 100% necessary speaker swap.

it's slightly less weird with the marshall. more at home with the peavey, but still not great. interesting to find that no matter what the cab is, a dual rectifier sounds like a dual rectifier.
how is it muffled and fizzy at the same time? fascinating. there's that eminence style harshness on the top end. and it seems to push the exact frequency dimebag darrell always removed. 900hz ish. like it's not even a 700-800 snarl. it's just boxy and weird. cardboardy and cheap. i'd be very interested to see this same cab with a single nice speaker put in it and then a side by side.
seems i'm not the only one who doesn't have hardstyle knees anymore haha. we gettin' old fam.

I own this cab and I intend to get rid of it. I've gigged with the thing for years. I don't mind the sound, but it is a pain in the ass to carry up and down venue stairs. The thing is VERY heavy. The other guitarist in our band has a Marshall 4 12 that is no where even close to this heavy. Taking it to band practice, getting it in a van and in to the venue is a nightmare. I'm just going to get a 2 12 already. I'm getting too old to mess with this anymore.

Pehaps conside that there could be a reason for the mdf back other than the cost. Just saying, I built quite a lot of speaker cabs and experience tells me that perhaps somone actually realised what they were doing, rather than holding on to some old fashioned ''holy grail'' which has no ''holy'' beyond fenatical belief. For once I'm not going to share what I found, I actually read theis in a tiny little book, and the writers obsevation made total sense and pehaps the guys at Peavy realised this although I doubt it. it's worth considering not using only one material.

My peavey valveking does much better with the windsor 4×12 then my mesa 2×12. U know as i do the low end or bass on the valveking sucks so through that windsor cab the sheffields in that cab sound great for some reason the windsor cab adds bass to the signal which especially is great for the valveking.

MDF on the rear panel of the cab and bad speakers. Don't understand the purpose to buy such a thing! Otherwise, front loaded vs back loaded speakers will sound totally different.

    • @richardyoung9773
      @richardyoung9773 Рік тому

You don't want a big flat panel resonating like an acoustic guitar soundboard at the back of a 4X12. MDF is a little more "dead"/neutral. The material actually makes sense for that application on this cabinet.

People that hate on Sheffield's are hallucinating. This is an internet trend. It's exactly the same as with Boss Metalzone, literally the best selling Boss FX pedal of all time outsold only by the Boss chromatic tuner which is not an FX pedal. Every good Deicide album the Hoffman bros both used Metalzones. Not to mention everyone loves early 90's death metal cause it's sick as fuck and far superior to anything Zoomers and young Millennials will ever come up with. You people are all just mindlessly repeating each other and arguing with yourselves.
