@@munkeeBraynStoo Absolutely. Seen them back in the day at the Alrosa Villa. Dave broke out a 20 minute solo halfway through their set while the others left the stage.
The sad thing about these lyrics is that it's not actually talking about Hell. All the terrible things that the song describes are found here in Earth, and Earth is indeed South of Heaven. That's really what Slayer and a lot of bands who use Satanic imagery do. They look at the evils of humanity and compare them to the evils of Hell and Satan. The emphasis is largely for both shock value and to provoke deep thinking and critique of humanity.
This is how I've described the relationship of "The BIG 4" - Metallica and Megadeth are those two brothers who are always trying to one up each other, then there's Anthrax who is the party guy and is always trying to keep the peace with the brothers. Slayer is that kid in the back of classroom carving his name in the desk. Maiden and Priest were like the cool college kids. Then Pantera was like that high school freshman who looked up to all the other guys, but still did his own thing.
Fun Slayer fact: one of the guitarists (Kerry King) played guitar on The Beastie Boys' Fight For Your Right and No Sleep Till Brooklyn. You can really hear it in the solos
It's funny that Hollywood says "I could rap over this". Back in 1988, Public Enemy recorded the track "She Watch Channel Zero" on their "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" album. This song sampled the breakdown riff from Slayer's track "Angel of Death". Both bands were signed to Rick Rubin's Def Jam label at the time. You should check out both Slayer's "Angel of Death" and Public Enemy's "She Watch Channel Zero" if you haven't heard them already. I think you guys would love them both. Great reaction dudes!
Also "Lil Jon & East Side Boyz - Stop f***ing with me" starts with Mandatory suicide riff and the rest of the song is Raining blood. Don't know if there's any other "Slayer rap" songs.

Slayer just has that evil vibe that none of those other bands have. At least, not at the same level. By the way, check out the metal documentary Murder in the Front Row on Prime Video. It focuses mainly on San Francisco's Bay area thrash scene back when all those Big Four guys were just kids. Best metal doc ever.
Through all the years I "liked" Slayer, it was really their instrumental music and riffs that I liked, then I heard South of Heaven, and it was their first song I liked top to bottom. It is on par with the best output of the rest of the thrash bands out there. Got a bit of the Savatage or Helloween feel.
You more or less hit the nail on the head about what separates Slayer from the rest of the big four. Anthrax bring the NY style, rap, and party atmosphere with humour, Metallica are the stadium fillers that went mainstream and had very influential early music, Megadeth upped the technical skill and instrument playing ability and song structures, whereas Slayer aren't quite as precise but make up for it with creativity and raw, pummelling aggression. They are the one out of the four which most bridges the gap between thrash metal and death metal of the time.
Seeing these guys, AND PANTERA, live, on my 19th birthday, was SO RAD!! Turns out it was Pantera's 3rd to last show. Morbid Angel was supposed to play, but they couldn't get over the border. They're still bucket list.
Ric Rubin was the producer for their 3 greatest albums - and of course he brought in a little rap flavor to all of the slayer albums that he produced!!!!
To see how SLayer's music has evolved, 1990 Seasons in the Abyss, 1994 Divine Intervention, 1998 Stain of MInd, 2001 Disciple, 2006 Jihad, 2009 Beauty through Order & 2015 When the Stillness Comes
Slayer- South of Heaven & Seasons In the Abyss are amazing album listens through & through. Everyone always talks about Reign in Blood which is fantastic influence of thrash but those above albums are amazing listens for their overall true musicianship. When you said "I could rap to this"... well Slayer's Kerry King are playing guitar riff and solo to rap in 'No sleep til Broklyn' by Beastie boys.
Ahhh childhood memories was always my favorite
Seeing these guys, AND PANTERA, live, on my 19th birthday, was SO RAD!! Turns out it was Pantera's 3rd to last show. Morbid Angel was supposed to play, but they couldn't get over the border. They're still bucket list.
MUDVAYNE is getting back together again!!! Please do "Forget to remember."
i saw they are playing louder than life in louisville. i wish i still lived there. i'm 4 hours away now, but still might make the trip.
This and Dead Skin Mask are up there with my favorite Slayer tracks despite being a bit of a departure for them.
Ric Rubin was the producer for their 3 greatest albums - and of course he brought in a little rap flavor to all of the slayer albums that he produced!!!!
One of the best albums in the world 🌎
Also, this is Slayer's fourth album, released in 1988.
DUDE!! Queensryche T? My Fuckin' Hero! Peace!!!!
Yes, Metallica released their album Hardwired...To Self Destruct in 2016 and are currently working on a new album.
To see how SLayer's music has evolved, 1990 Seasons in the Abyss, 1994 Divine Intervention, 1998 Stain of MInd, 2001 Disciple, 2006 Jihad, 2009 Beauty through Order & 2015 When the Stillness Comes
The best song on this underrated album.
dayumm.i only wish I wz hearing ths record for the first time. the first time I heard ths wz wen it came out in the summer of 1988.wen I wz 20 yrs old
You guys should react to anything by exodus they helped pave the way for thrash metal
The drummer is in Mr. Bungle atm who's last album(2020) may be one of the best thrash albums of the 80's!;)
Slayer- South of Heaven & Seasons In the Abyss are amazing album listens through & through. Everyone always talks about Reign in Blood which is fantastic influence of thrash but those above albums are amazing listens for their overall true musicianship. Highly recommend checking them both out in entirety
The drummer is Dave Lombardo, one of the BEST drummers in thrash. He also played for Suicidal Tendencies for a bit.
Thrash metal was created in 1980 by the New Jersey band, Overkill.
In fact, you guys should react to some Overkill. They're still together, still touring & releasing albums. Try "Welcome To The Garden State" from their 19th, and, latest, studio album.
SLAYER! \m/ Keep on rockin' in the free world boys!
Devildriver - The Mountain
Unearth - Endless
The next song on the South of Heaven album is Silent Scream. You want to hear more badass drumming check that song out.

Dave Lombardo is just a beast on the drums!
They never disappoint live.
You gotta do seasons in the abyss next!!!
