    Captain. Thanks for bringing Rob on there and for playing original riffs. It nice not to hear all the EVH signature riffs. Great Work Guys.

    If you go to the EVH Gear youtube channel and watch the demo by Chris Cannella on this amp you will see how great this amp cleans up at about 3 minutes into the video. Turned up to 50 watts without the guitar vol rolled back and it just sparkles. Nothing against you guys but that demo really shows how this amp sounds in a much better way. Had I gone by this review I might not have gone down and played one myself. Saw the other review and sounded so much better that I did go play one. Absolutely great sounding amp and I have decided I am going to buy one. Very versatile from clean to as much gain as my Lee Jackson XLS 1000, with the ability to play at bedroom and neighbor friendly volumes without losing the tone.

    To tell you the truth, I find the white ivory design elements the most attractive thing about this amp! Ha! Looks very, very cool.

    The Charvel-aficionado in me was pleased with this video. This amp needs no further introduction, it's just lovely! If money and practicality were no issues than I'd have a wall of these...

    I had the 5150 III head with a Hayden handmade V30 cab. This setup - even at low volumes - didn't sound nowhere near as trebly and thin as this combo, instead it was so thick that it was really mind blowing. The one thing I couldn't get used to about this amp was it being so direct and piercing that I ended up with a JVM410H after it and loved it much more.

    Ya know, I have to agree with Nigel. This from a guy (me) who frankly enjoys Cap'n and Chappers vid's as much as any form of entertainment on earth. I'll never stop enjoying you guys, and never miss one demo of you as a duo especially, but Nigel's right with the harsh, ice picky sound. I'll add the term thin-bitter-ish.

    Chappers.
    Today, I had an awesome day. I succeeded at something that I had worked for possibly years towards. I thought I had failed. I waited and waited for the result. I succeeded.
    Then this video came out.

    It is a pretty good academic exercise to listen to the tones of guitarist as they age, they lose their hearing and their guitar tones get brighter and harsher as they cant hear those highs anymore and compensate with brighter, harsher amps and guitars.

    I think the sounds in this video are representative of how the amp sounded in the room (I should know - I was there!). Obviously the type of speakers you're listening on will affect it, but in a nut shell, at the volume we had it (ie about 25%) it had a weak/tinny clean sound, a decent crunch tone & a really good high gain metal tone. The louder we turned it up, the better the clean sound became, but we really had to get the speakers moving before we got any bass end out of the clean sound.

    I'm with a couple of the other guys who said this was too trebly and fizzy. I find this with a lot of the videos. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love your demos and won't stop watching them, I just think that in quite a lot of your vids, the sound is fizzy. Hope my feedback's taken on board.

    I've tried this amp and the thing that stopped me buying it was the clean channel. Very thin and weak with no bottom end whatsoever. The crunch channel however is very nice and the best I've heard. The the lead channel is just insane, even with the gain on about number three. Great amp if you never use a clean channel but for me, I'll be keeping my Blackstar HT Stage 60 (for now)

    That is a tight sounding amp. Rob was right on when he said it has a modern gain tone. The San Dimas is so badass. Great choice. Although I love all the ML series guitars, I am glad you guys don't just use those all the time in an attempt to sell them by cramming them down our collective throat.

  • @CaptAnderton

    Whilst I don't agree with some of the comments saying that the amp sounds like shit, I can confirm that the way it sounds on my computer (through some mid price computer speakers) is how the amp sounded in the room. Like all valve amps the tone gets better the louder you go, but even at 25% volume (which is about what we were at) it was still probably rehearsal volume (so not quiet!). There really isn't anything "wrong" with the way its been recorded....

  • @tymeryder7436
    @tymeryder7436 9 років тому

    Currently looking at the EVH-III 1x12 and the Engl Screamer 50 equiv. Both similarly voiced and priced. The Engl probably cleans-up better and is also more handsome and robust in design (Germany always makes great stuff). Also contains a Vintage 30 (favorite :) ...but the EVH has a headphone jack (might tip the scales). Very cool feature for apartment dwelling combo owners.
    Nice guitar selection. If I didn't already have a hot rodded strat, I'd be running down to purchase the 2H slime green maple neck version. The perfect non signature rock machine (imho).

    For those of you complaining about the recording quality: to be honest, the amp sounds a bit like that. It's actually the speakers; the G12H30 can ruin practically any amplifier. Through the Greenback equipped 4x12, or a V30 cab, this thing sounds phenomenal. Through a pair of G12H30s, it sounds like clipped fizzy garbage.

    • @badlamb33
      @badlamb33 10 років тому

      HAHA Hey .. EVH 5150III Combo (the one in this vid) has two Celestion G12M 8-ohm speakers, thats(G12M Greenback 25W). The 50 watt head and 212 cab have the G12H30s in it. With new G12M Greenbacks or G12H30s you know you have to break them in to get rid of that fizzy garbage. The 212 cab sounds better with the G12H30s i think you know that ..

    I'm listening through a pair of high quality headphones and I too found the tone to be very harsh and brittle in this particular video. I thought it was just me, but after reading the comments I can see I'm not crazy (or we all are, one or the other). I don't mean to complain; I find most of Anderton's videos to sound much better and just wanted to provide useful feedback.

  • @gcheq
    @gcheq 11 років тому

    Surprised you guys didn't mention Gojira in the video. They've used EHV heads/cabs for ages now and have produced some of the smoothest modern high gain tones I've ever heard. (As you'd expect their live tone is also phenomenal)
    Viewers need to remember, the EQ controls aren't in our hands on these vids, and different tones sound good to different people. Any hard rock/modern metal tone is easily doable for this amp, and with basic tweaking there's no graininess or fizz to be found whatsoever.

    Don't get me wrong, I love you, Chappers. You're a killer player and seem to be an all around great guy. And again, a KILLER player! But you guys have got to do something about your recording quality. You are always overdriving the mic so bad that it basically makes every amp demo you do sound like crap relative to what they sound like live. I've played first hand, many of the amplifiers you've demo'd here and almost without exception they sound better than your videos portray and I'm not 1/10th the player you are. Please have Alderton give you a better mic, midi interface, mixer or whatever for these demos - PLEASE!! If these demos where all I had to go on I would have passed on playing several really killer amps. The one you are demoing here is another perfect example. Sounds 10x's tighter, more responsive and warmer in person than this muddy, overdriving recording portrays. IMHO Rock on Chappers. I love your playing.

    I'm watching and listening with some Yamaha HS80's, it is quite "edgy" sounding, (albeit with out the full band around it, would sound better that way) I think also that's due in part to the SD pickups (they are powerful) Mr EV likes low/mid output pickups through a driven amp his words not mine, set of pafs would be have been a better combination to my mind, nice new Demo studio BTW well done Stick!

    pretty standard. lower gain sounds are more power section reliant, where modern high gain stuff is much more preamp reliant. The thing you guys said about the lower gain pickups is on the money. If you haven't seen the Seymour Duncan pickup series by premier guitar you should look it up. Everything pickups makes more sense after watching it

  • @ayeapprove
    @ayeapprove 11 років тому

    My 50 Watt EVH III head stays clean right about a gain setting of 11 o'clock with EMG pickups and breaks up afterwards. You do loose a bit of low end that way, but that's what the eq and resonance knobs are for.

    I have felt the same for a long time. I will always watch Andertons reviews, but I have long gone elsewhere to here a better representation of gear. Seems to me that it is everything that Stick records that is harsh, thin and trebly. The ones Rob does at home are so much better.

    It's probably the mic too close to cone and too close to the speaker. If you back it up and move it to the outside, it'd be a lot less saturated. Plus G12t75s are harsh speakers, if you put V30s it'd clear it up more too.

    It was about 45 degrees off axis and off center, we are constantly trying new techniques and mics and this combination just didn't catch the vibe of the amp well. I am now moving out of the video room as to date I have no real monitoring so there is a lot of hit and miss, especially when the amp is cranked. One thing I try very had to do it give you guys a unprocessed signal so you 'hear' the amp and not a mixed produced recording.
    Stick
