Macca, Ventanus led the defense of Calth during the Underground War for years upon years, cut off from resupply and forced to scavenge what functional armor he could from friend and foe alike. It makes complete sense that he'd be wearing a souped up version of Mark V.
I can see that, at least for one version of him, depending on when and where the model is supposed to be situated in. Though, the surviving veterans of that force can always re- and up-armour into newer or fresh suits after they win the war and resupply with the main force of Ultramarines, and they’re not going to pass up a newfound hero because they can’t afford to replace his cobbled-together armour, even if he simply kept it on purpose and got it properly engineered and fitted once finally out of the constant combat. So it can kinda go either way, if you want to have him in worn-in MK V, or artificer MK III or IV post-Calth.
@@toastle8005 Veterans of Calth were known to refuse to even get radiation burn scars healed, so proud were they of bearing the Mark of Calth, it would be really surprising if Ventanus *didn't* keep whatever armor he'd cobbled together there and just have it brought up to Legion standard.
There was a a guy at a 40k competition a few years ago taht had a very cool Ultramarines army now I realize the vast majority of it was 30k models that he barely converted to be 40K.
you don’t really need to convert them to 40k, just say that they’re ‘Early Scouring’, or that ‘I just want a damn game, can I please just play with these and be somebody with it, I can’t afford to sell another kidney’ 😅 Plus, I imagine the Invictarus Suzaren get a morale debuff from their sheer, unapologetic swagger, with the enemies not being able to pick an individual detail to focus on
I dunno man, surely if any character should have patchwork mk 5 armour it's Ventanus during the Underground war .... Where he got the mk 6 bits is a question though.
I think we should take note of when a character's armor doesn't look the way it's supposed to. Just like with all the newer mk III characters that got that complaint, those characters may be hinting towards what to expect from the inevitable redesigned mk IV.
Some Word Bearer seeker scavenged a suit off a RG he killed at the dropsite, Calth scavenged bits off of him in turn to repair his suit after the seeker failed to kill him, something like that...
I prefer it when the shields all look the same. It gives the unit a regimented look. Only the squad leader's shield should maybe be different. With the Suzerains the unique shields make sense because they're basically a squad made entirely of consuls. That's why every dude in a Suzerain unit has the character trait. People talk about the furry heads, but, for my money, these are THE most insulting mk VI heads. The stuck a U and a stripe on normal mk VI heads and sent them off. That's bullshit.
Perhaps this says more about me than anything else, but i very much like the super ornate armour that the Ultramarines have. Since they have Ultramar as their own mini empire and the great logistics of Guilliman, it makes sense that they could have such ornate armour. And since they Also placed great atention on being good leaders/ politicans, Why wouldnt they embezzle a little of the money for the schools to get some extra bling…..
Yeah, I think it’s what makes them such a cool and compelling legion in 30k. Yeah, they’re Boy Scouts and toy soldiers who didn’t expect to have to fight this war, but damn did their efforts and empire-protection pay off in wealth, resources and artisanship, and damn do they ever know how to work as a team.
I do like the ancient, so much so it was the model that inspired me to do my still ongoing Space Crusade model upgrade project. But since starting it, I have like any true hobbyist, started side projects, unfinished projects and the like but come new year: new year: new Rutguar!
I like the parts when suggesting a good selection of 40k units for conversion use in 30k. Like wirh Cassius and the berzerkers. Death watch kill team is really good for bits.
Agreed- I converted the Raven Guard Deathwatch character into a Dark Fury and he came out pretty decently. A 30K jump pack, an older MKVI helmet, and some resculpting and repositioning of the arms and he’s a new man!
I must be super weird because I really like g man’s 40K with his helmet. But not most of the modern 40K ultras and use hh stuff to kit bash them. What you y’all think?
Yeah I don't think being able to convert a legion praetor into another legion makes it good or bad ..that terminator prator is beautiful in person..I have it ...and think it's just what we needed ...a praetor to lead cattaphractti..the large axe ...a symbol and helps to make it out as a lead character, reminiscent of the likes of Gabriel or Moloc ...not that it would suit power armour or other characters ....it is busy but I think they've done it well .. they've made the details more refined
Gee, I'm glad Ventanus is armed with a "lethal sword" when he went into battle. It must really suck for the marines who went into combat with the non-lethal swords.
Ths ultramarines mk 6 helmets should have been one with a more classic design with the larger visor, think the ultramarines and crimson fists had some of the best 80s mk 6 era art. Hell, wheres the sharkteeth helmet?
So glad you pointed out the helmets looking like they could be for dark angels or imperial fists ...I have 60 on my imperial fists as the imperial fist ones were too generic ... The only thing wrong with the suzerian for me are the poses ....they are in movements that go completely against the boarding shields in their hands ..and they look overbalanced or falling over ...still have 10 though

Love the analysis as always, though I kinda expected the limited ed. Ultramarine Herald to pop up in this followed by a comment that it's a shame to event/time lock these miniatures.
2:04 - just realised these Mk6 upgrades have those over-ear flaps that Mk10 primaris helms have. Minor gripe, but I find it incredibly tedious when the helmet upgrades blend into other armour marks for no reason, especially one that's 10,000 years newer. GW sculpting interns were really stumped for ideas it seems.
Macca tends to be a pretty big fan of both, doesn’t he? Especially EC, just not the incredibly disappointing Terminator character that took ten years after the Phoenix Terminators to be released with a tenth of the detail and subtlety Which is always a bit sad, but not the end of the world
I don’t get why you dislike Zephon as much as you do. I get disliking the fact it isn’t Zephon, but you’ve said in the past that he’s “no-one’s favourite character” which implies that he certainly isn’t your favourite character so the fact that you go as far as to not even consider him in terms of stuff like kitbash potential for more generic units is kinda bizarre to me.
Well, he’s... not exactly easy to kitbash into a generic character, is he? It’s a bit of a strange choice to even try, frankly, let alone to be puzzled advice to why people don’t suggest him as conversion fodder when he’s rather unsuited for it. But also, what would you be converting him for? A Jump-Pack Consul, to lead a unit of jump-pack troops, like assault marines? Why would you go out of your way to convert that out of a heavily-specific kit, when you don’t really have any options to build flying troops to keep up with your new kitbashed character? I’m all for creativity, it just feels a little out of left field as a proposition
@@toastle8005 he’s actually cut very well for a GW sculpt and a character at that. You buy him and you’ve got a lot of very handy bits. Iconography like the knee pad on the robot leg and the belt buckle are optional. If you clip the rock (not hard) you don’t even need to take him as a jump marine. He becomes a marine in a running pose. The robot arms with a sword would be a cool set of bits to put on a champion and his shoulder pad could be used for a chaplain. You can even use the two arms separately if you like. Main issue is that he’s scaled like the new MK VI so the gauntlets are tiny.

My biggest issue with Remus Ventanus is: where is the spike on the vexillas base? How is he gonna stab Word bearers with that as it is?
*HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO STAB TRAITORS WITH THIS?! WASTE OF METAL, IS WHAT IT IS*
That was the best part of the book too.
"Can you please stop stabbing people with that and grab a real weapon?"
"No, this is fine."

The discontinued eagle masks always looked like golden Facehuggers to me more than eagles.
your reason for not liking the Invictarus Szerian because they have too much going on, seems to be exactly why I like them, they be drippy fr.
Depends how you paint them 🤣 they can either look damn stylish like the artwork, or like a visual nightmare, depending on your execution
It's worth mentioning that the old mk3 legion herald was decent, and pretty much was Remus Ventanus for many years

You know the one thing from each HH range missing from each of these great reviews is the decal sheet. Maybe we could get a video for those?

To be fair, the ventanus model is very accurate to his visions of heresy art
Strange, I loved the 40k Guilliman and really don't like the HH one...go figure.
Gee, I'm glad Ventanus is armed with a "lethal sword" when he went into battle. It must really suck for the marines who went into combat with the non-lethal swords.
Lorgar above, ultramar below!
I mean the preator pattern is supposed to be the ultramarines mk4 cause they didn't get much from horus and decided to get a better version made

WE MARCH FOR MACRAGGE!
NO TODAY WE MARCH FOR CALTH!
Love this series
I like the MKIV heads alot but yeah you could use them for like any legion and itll be fine.
I'd love if we had gotten some kind of Roman cavalry mask for our upgraded heads, really help sell that "noble" Roman look that the UM have
Yeah I have 40 ultramarines with those ultramarine shield and sword parts
all ultramarines characters needed the same pose, otherwise you wouldn't know which legion they are 😉

Crazy how much “U” symbols those characters have, talking about going overboard.

On to the death guard. I wonder if the trend of nigh-giddy Maccas will continue?
