Larry invented the technique called, "Thumping and Plucking." Slap bass is the technique applied to upright bass, used 1st by Rockabilly bassist to get more amplified sound and to help fill the back beat!
Oh my goodness.... This was totally mind blowing stuff!! I stood about 5ft in front of this & that funk set my soul on fire!! Absolutely different class & such a treat to witness! :-D
Yes but Larry had a fuller sound. Yes they are beasts. Mark is an innovator, Larry can't be beat. But I was really proud to see Mark hold back alot and hand Larry the road & wheel. It's called true respect. Honor to them both. Very rare in any age.
Larry has been playing that same cream colored bass since he was with Sly and the Family stone. That bass is easily 60 years old. None the less. seems people are Forgetting about Louis Johnson. C'mon guys. Louis took Larry to the next level and mark is a royal torch-bearer of that school. Mark Didnt innovate anything. After Louis showed up, Stanley Clarke gave us a unique approach to the THUMB. 20 years later, Victor Wooten appeared and and pretty much destroyed the old school of slap. larry and Vic are true innovators.
@@bassboye8959 mark holds back all the time, he has plenty of groove and feel. He's not all show-off. He is a real bass player, not the "instagram show off" type thing that many seem to think he is.
I saw Larry Graham shut Jaco Pastorius down at the Ford Auditorium in Detroit. L.G. was with his group, Graham Central Station. Jaco was playing bass that night for Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters. Larry opened the show and was amazing. Absolutely incredible. Jaco came on next with Herbie. It was half way through the show before we could even identify who was playing bass.I kept thinking it was Jaco, who was still relatively new (to stardom). But there was no bravado, or excessive showmanship from Jaco. Larry had said it all.
Exactly. Some of these motherf*ckers aren't respecting the man who started it all like they ought to be. Mark is a huge favorite of mine, but Larry is THE man and these b*tches better recognize!
+JAMES ZOND you gotta have respect for Larry, like you said he started it and he's one hell of a bassplayer. But for me personally, i prefer the sound and stuff Mark plays. It's just a matter of taste.
I like Mark King also what i like about Mark also is that he plays and sings, but there is also another Bass Player who sings plays the Bass and use foot pedals all at the same time and that is Geddy Lee from Rush, I never seen Rush in Concert But I would love to see them, sometimes it can be very difficult singing and playing complex Patterns on the Bass
you know you can swear on youtube right? or is your mother looking over your shoulder whenever you get on youtube? you might as well be comparing apples to oranges or water to a paper bag.
This video is beautiful. Such an epic music moment! Both have great talent. Is Graham right handed? King is strongly left handed. They compliment each other like puzzle pieces that fit together. Graham influenced King, collaboration is not competition, because music is art. Drummer deserves a medal for keeping up with these virtuosos. #reflexes
I want to see Larry King on bass - that is TV show moderator - huh - but beautiful mistake you made, by word combination of them you get third wellknown person.
How strange it is,, so much respect ,pleasure , sharing between those greatest players face to all those bullshit comments about tuning or who is better... those guys are the essence of live groove even out of tune or with one note...
I love both these players!! Larry Graham is where it began--MK is always throwing nods to his influences and inspirations in his own stuff-- Larry, Stanley, Jaco, Louis, etc.. RESPECT!!!
both one of my favourites...and both have their special techniques. I guess its hard to cover the one or the other. So both are genius. So both, both, both ;-)
@fldude46 All due respect? John McVee is good. He would have been completely out of his element here. Totally different style of bass playing. Sorry. Slap and thump bass beastmasters right here. Throw Flea in for John and then you'd have a 6 pack of slap bass legends. Although... Does Verdine slap? Was not remembering that he did...? But Bootsy Collins damn sure does. Hellyeah. Slide Bootzilla Baby into Verdine's slot instead, now you're talking 6 truly legendary slap and thump bass monster madnesses. Yabba Dabba Doozilla. 🎶😎🎶😎🎶😎🎶😎🎶😎 (Just one bass fan's opinion.)
This is just awesome stuff!! Amazing that the guy who 'invented' it is playing with the guy who took it further and better! Both are beyond brilliant but MK does have the edge for some reason I can't define. Anyway leather trousers and white suit is impossible to knock.
There is no other level between the two Bassist its a learning process, the step was made to teach the newest development of the bass generation. Dig that!
Two if the greatest bass players of all time... thanks for the post. But I did notice one oddity... it says it took place on 10-3-13... does that mean I can still get there since it is in the future? I really hope so, I'd love to see this live!!!
It's a tuff song even for advanced thumpers. They did it right, and Mark did it well. I cant thank Larry Graham enough for the years of fun I've had learning & perfecting his style to suit my playing. I Love these men on every level.
Peace Happy New Year to our friends in Japan. If it wasn't for the great tastes of the Japanese fans, most of our music the world over would be obsolete. Alot of great musicians from there as well. Love Juna Serita, man, she makes me want to quit LMAO. Nah not a chance, but she's definitely going places internationaly. The girls of this class as well. 😆✌💘

Alguien sabe si la canción que toca Larry en el minuto 2:26 y con la que se presenta y inicia Mark tiene nombre? Me refiero al Riff que tocan es una canción o solamente fue Jam improvisado
Larry G's G string seems a bit out of tune. Still pretty awesome. Love how Mark King discreetly sneaked in, plugged his bass in, and just when everyone's attention was at Larry, he came out and went "Pooooratrtatatatatattoinktoinktoink" and everyone just practically exploded.
1 I have perfect pitch too. 2 I would like to hear a legendary player playing in tune if possible, otherwise it sounds bad. 3 I build basses, I don't just play them. Now who's got something to prove. It was just an observation, it's like his Gstring has a slow puncture. My comment wasn't even addressed to you in any case, yet you felt the need to chip in with personal insults. However, your opinion matters little to me.
You're right, and it seems to me it is a permanent flaw in his bass, because you can hear LG's G out of tune a lot in his videos. And Mark's hi tech stays tuned for days..
Indeed, but I was under the impression MOON basses were pretty good kit, they're certainly not cheap. Mark Kings gear is from another planet. This is NOT easy on the ear by any means. When in doubt crank the distortion pedal.
Larry's bass sounds far better than Mark's, to me anyhow :) Their abilities can't really be compared, as Onze stated, Larry was The Beginning of it all.

nice to see mark king acknowleges old school Larry Graham as the god father of the slap bass. but this live recording doesn't do either of the guys justice . bad live recording values. damn and then Larry was doing jaco pastorius type of Jimi Hendrix style, feedback, sustain, amazing.
