I totally love the fact, that he is not going for speed, unlike most of modern bassists, who think that faster = cooler. That's why he has a groove in his solos.
josshlegg Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Rob Trujillo (in infectious grooves), Nathaneil Philips(spelling not sure), James Jamerson, TM Stevens. My favourite funk guy is by far Larry Graham though. Even if he's not as technical as some of the guys on this list, his lines are just amazing.
totally agree.. the only thing i don't like about this solo is that you can hear he literally did this exact routine a thousand times.. it kinda sounds like he's going through the motions.. I've seen him in 1995 and he did this exact solo.. which i know is kind of inevitable if you are a star from many years ago and everyone comes to hear you play your old hits.. still I would like to hear him come up with a new routine.. I'm sure he has it in him.. cause he is the undisputed king.. noone even comes close to him.. not even dare i say it bootsy.. Bootsy is more creative in that he still makes new music and they share a first place in funkyness.. but larry is the better player.. technically.. ok sorry i'm going of into a rant.. never mind I just wanted to say i agree with yout innitial comment ;-)
What a solo . wow Without Larry's thumb there'd be no Bootsy , one of the most influential funk bass players. Saw him in London and he was awsome. This is excerts from Earthquake song.
I;m forever grateful to have experienced the talents of "The Lord of the Low Frequency", Larry Graham and I have been trying to copy him for years, but he cant be bested for he is the best at what he does. He is indeed a gift to all us bass players who like to be entertained by some Thump ,Pop, and Pull.
Larry ..... Still an Awesome talent ! An awesome man , skilled and wise in so many ways , he deserves to live forever ! More of that husky voice though please Mr Graham! Family Affair has lived with me from my childhood ! Ailsa
I've heard him twice and both were life peak musical experiences. It's like a New Year's Eve Party coming at you at the speed of sound. There are many masters but personally I'd say there's no better musician than Graham.
I saw him in atlanta,ga back in august 2011 and he stole the show in the flashback fest on the bill of the likes of whodini, loose ends, taste of honey, keith sweat, and midnight star. everybody sung along and he got a standing ovation when they did one in a million but this is always a highlight for me since IMAGETTin is my favorite on gcs2000 cd.
When he goes to the audience that is a powerful music connection. It sends spiritual frequencies of healing to everyone there. Everyone admires him, and follows his every move and sound coming out of his bass.
He sights him as an influence, and since he invented the thump and pluck technique (known more commonly as slap), its fair to say a major one,and yes, both like to get their strut on, but bar technique, their playing styles arn't that similar, Les plays much more unconventionally and in a more progressive style, especially these days whilst Larry is a full on funk demon!! Both are awesome, now lets kick back and enjoy all that delicious bass!!
eu estava neste show foi D+ em paris foi o primeiro show q eu foi na minha vida chorei o tempo todo muita emoçao... principalmente por que nessa epoca eu estava estudando musica(bass)
It was an obscure joke about the bass having the same first 4 strings of a guitar but an octave lower. He said that the guitar's other 2 strings disliked the video.

Nothing but Love for Larry! He has always been down to earth if you ever meet him.
Oooooooh hell yeeeaaaaah. I can see why Les Claypool worships this guy. Bass LEGEND!!! If you can't enjoy that sound, life isn't worth living.
Larry is overlooked by the casual bass fan, but he deserves a spot up there with the all time great.
In a part of this video, his play reminds me like Jim Hendrix. I bet really love that bass guitar!!
Mr. Larry Graham the Master of Thump Bass.

Best bass solo everrrrrR
