The deadliest, NASTIEST shotgun slug we've ever tested?

  • Today we are testing a prototype shotgun slug designed by Evan Perry. It uses three Ramset blanks inside a body made from dozens of layers of razor-sharp pieces of steel. We were shocked how nasty these performed. These are not for sale.

    Remove the center pin. The brass cases are more than enough to hold it together. Having a center hole would help it fly straighter, and they would separate more consistently.
    Put a divot in the middle of each of the flanges and in the inside corner of each point to give them room to bend and detach from the brass more easily. It would also give them a stress point where they could break apart.
    Make the center hole larger. This will reduce air resistance, keep it more stable, and give each segment another stress point in the center, which would make them more frangible. Using hardened and untempered steel, or cast steel would help with this.
    Using fewer segments separated by washers or shims would give them room to separate as well.
    You could also keep the center pin, but redesign it to use a single centerfire blank such as .38 Special in the center with the center pin protruding further to act as a firing pin. With the right materials and enough stress points, this would essentially create a 12 gauge frag grenade.

    This round is amazing. Evan did a great job with this and I think it requires more tinkering. Thankfully, the new modification I’d suggest is quite simple: attach a tip to the round to the center pin. I think a bit more weight on the tip might help it fly straight and insure the blanks are set off on impact. If he’s seeing this, Evan, make a three sided tip heavy tip for this round before adding the blanks so the round penetrates and guarantees blank ignition with material separating at the tip and adding pressure to the blank primers.

    Damn, now I feel like making a few of these. I'd probably make them a bit differently though. Machine a single cylinder out of a brittle high carbon steel shaped like a thick-walled cup, use a single centrally positioned ramset as a primer charge (heck, maybe remove the gunpowder in the ramset and replace with something more powerful, we only need the primer after all) to ignite a larger quantity of some other explosive housed in the empty space under the ramset (flash powder comes to mind, might be too sensitive to avoid risk of it going off when you fire the gun, would have to run some tests...). Machine some slots down the sides of the cylinder to aid in uniform fragmentation, and you'd basically be firing a little grenade.

    The problem here is that the slug essentially explodes on impact, which is actually not what you want. This would likely cause surface burns on the skin, but doesn't make the round more lethal. Tank shells are set to explode a tiny bit *after* they hit something so that the explosion will occur inside the target, not on the surface (potentially totally absorbed by the armor).
    Ideally you would want to introduce some kind of delaying mechanism. It also might be worth re-orienting the blanks, as in their current orientation I don't know how much they actually do to spread the laminate. It seems like unless the target is hard, the center pin doesn't break and allow them to disperse, some maybe weakening that pin is in order.

    • @discardedink5994
      @discardedink5994 4 місяці тому

      Not really because of all the momentum that explosion is still being forced in a direction so it’s kinda like a flying shaped charge if you really think about it

    • @demonicspire1345
      @demonicspire1345 4 місяці тому

      @@discardedink5994 a flying shaped charge is a thing, its called a HEAT round, and you also have things like EFPs. Without even arguing over whether or not this arrangement would produce a significant shaped charge effect, that's still less damaging than the blanks exploding inside your body. Look at the gummy bear target, the burns are only really on the surface of the material.
      I would actually be curious to see them test an azide compound, as there are commercial bullets that use azide to explode inside their target and I haven't seen much testing of them on youtube.
