when you breathe through a gas mask you use force since the filters prevent the entry of air in a radical way, greatly improving the air filtration, being that in personal experience you feel that you suffocate.
The MCU2 was a pretty good mask. The filter being off to one side was a pain in the neck & it was also very involved to switch it to the other side for left-handed shooters, but the field of view was pretty good.
Excellent video! I had to use a cheek filter mask in the late 80s, I can't recall which model. I remember it being hot and stifling. I now have some, newish one with wide faceplate, running an MSA 6A PAPR, for the 'rona. I really like that you addressed the M designation in our military nomenclature, it is a silly thing.

Some soldiers would piss on rags and use those as a respirator if they didn’t or couldn’t get a mask, urine neutralised chlorine and teargas (the two most common chemical agents used in ww1)
Yeah there's truth to that but not truth that masks were manufactured with piss filters, teargas was not a common agent in WW1, it was trailed early in the war but had no real effect, the main chemical weapons used where chlorine, phosgene and mustard.
Here in the us, anything with an XM designation means experimental. And like you said, anything in service is given the M designation meaning model followed by its model number
Thanks for the suggestion, and don't worry about the filter. I've done enough research and watched enough of your videos to know the filters aren't safe. Thanks for replying though! I'll check that mask out. What kind of filters does it use?
i went to a surplus store and fond 2 m40 one had every thing but one valve in the nose cup and the other one was missing every thing but the valve in the nose cup.
If you live in America, check local police stations, they were issued FM12's and often get rid of them, just ask if you can have one. That's how I got mine.
I see the MCU-2P quite a lot on military action figures pictures on the internet, most of them on figures of the "usa army mountain troopers" or something
I know you said that you got this one on eBay but do you know of anywhere else were one could probably purchase one of these? I ask because I'm basically trying to make a steampunk Soldier costume for a costume party that I have coming up in a few weeks and I'm using an old Civil War era reenactors uniform and I figured a gas mask would be a neat thing but problem is so many of them look far to Modern. But this one appears to look just old enough to where it would work quite well. Also wasn't there a version before this one where it was literally just a flannel bag over the soldiers head with a big celluloid window over the front? I think they call it a smoke Hood.
There are two variants, Smoke hoods and PH hoods, pretty much the same thing just different eye lenses. As for finding one, check eBay or reenactor stores that sell replica gear, can't really help any more than that.
Weaponsandstuff93 okay cool. Even if it's just those little things any little help is appreciated and I thank you. I'm really glad that there are people like you out there talking about the intricacies of gas masks and of course a lot of the safety measures in buying Surplus gas masks. I work as an EMT and a couple of months ago we actually had someone who purchased an old Russian gas mask they suffered inhalation damage from talcum powder. But anyway thanks for letting me know the difference between the two hoods and even though it's small thank you for the little Snippets of info.
Glad it was useful, personally if I get a mask that's full of talc when I get it I just use a wet cloth to remove it. Most masks come with talc in if they are new but it's meant to be removed prior to use.

Lol you so funny
Really cool video and interesting masks, nice jacket by the way
Thanks, it's an old East German greatcoat.
Weaponsandstuff93 where did you get that? I bet it keeps you really warm, it looks thick. And very nice, as Lewis stated.
@@eyescream5313 most probably eBay
The last one seems pretty cool.
Improvising the straps & blocking the leaked area would make it functional in anytime.
Sealing the leak would be next to impossible, I don't really want to screw the mask up more by attempting to pour glue in it.
The XM-28 was never meant as a replacement to a NBC capable M-17. It was specifically made for RCA (Riot Control Agents)
The MCU2 was a pretty good mask. The filter being off to one side was a pain in the neck & it was also very involved to switch it to the other side for left-handed shooters, but the field of view was pretty good.
Main issue though was the entire mask was made of silicone, making it very vulnerable to blister agents.
Excellent video!

Yes! The video I've been waiting for. Thanks
Oh dude I wanna get your coat tho. It looks heavy as fuck but looks comfortable af
It's very warm, it's not entirely comfortable like all wool coats, a bit itchy if you are not wearing a long sleeve shirt.
The Ph gashood looks a bit like a sheet ghost
Sure does

Who is watching this whilst thinking of corona virus?
Are we all going to admit that the American Mickey Mouse gas mask was terrifying
I'm so happy I found one of your videos, I haven't been able to stop watching. I'm starting my own collection and this is really useful!
4:42 i have that mask with a filter
It's about to expire
ooo, so do I
@@LividCocomint very nice comrad
Great video Liam, there's some weird looking gas masks out there.
Cheers, there certainly are, there are some really weird designs I don't have as well.
Why tf do they have aspestos in, isn't that something they are supposed to be good for stopping
Because at the time it was the best filter medium
I found out my first gasmask filter a soviet filter had a espestos build up near the bottom
All Soviet filters contain asbestos.
Weaponsandstuff93 I know that they contain espestos it's just a collectors piece I now have the filter in a ziplock bag
LE_GAZEUX_DU_yu36 yes I know Jon the collector helped me identify the espestos
SkeloFace Gassed
Well if you came in contact with it you might just have to deal with it asbestos you can

Does the Pbf gas mask has asbestos in filters?
Probably
Easiest gasmask to put on ever a piece of cloth
Where do you get your PH gas hood? I see them on Ebay for over 90$ even though it is basically a piece of cloth! The gp-5's are only 20$.
On eBay, it's a cheap replica.
The gp5 masks are so cheap because there is so many
I understand when these were issues to American doughboys in as they were issued in emmergencys they had a string to go around the neck
That's a good solution.
I saw an black white picture from ww2 or ww1 a girl(?) Was sitting on the dad's knee. They had the first gas mask what you showed us.
Can you link the picture?
8:14 could you get it to take normal filters
*IMAGINE A KID'S MINIONS GAS MASK*
The P hood and PH hood were abbreviations of the official names of the masks, the Phenate and Phenate Hexamine hoods.
Correct
welll fuck i was wearing a gp-7 for 2 days with the filter that it came with on
Fang R.I.P.
Awesome video! I just got my first gas mask, a GP-5 (cliche, i know), but what would you recommend I get next? on a pretty tight budget.
Don't use the filter on the GP-5.
Nokia M61 masks are pretty cheap.
Thanks for the suggestion, and don't worry about the filter. I've done enough research and watched enough of your videos to know the filters aren't safe. Thanks for replying though! I'll check that mask out. What kind of filters does it use?
Derp Tubby 60mm i think (btw i am finnish like the gas mask itself :)!)
Get a Gp-4
I've used the filter for my GP-5 multiple times. Could that be problematic?
Hmmm... maybe a modern recreation of pbf and m10m with external filters would be cool... like The base gas mask designs are just soo cool.
Is there a specific place where I can buy XM 28
Ebay

My MCU has never leaked, and the polycarbonate lenses is so that the layer under it cannot be easily punctured
Well regardless mine has, so it's unusable.
Weaponsandstuff93 pull the lenses off and caulk it
It does actually come up if you google “Urine Gas Mask”, silly but comical.
So it's incorrect.
What gas mask should I get for my dog and his girlfriend?
There aren't really any masks that aren't ancient that fit on dogs.

cant find it

The replica I bought from eBay years ago so I can't provide a link.

You can buy them from hardware stores or eBay.
when you said is it a gas mask for dogs and said no I looked up gas mask for dogs and they actually make them lmao
Where do you bought the ph gas hood?
eBay
Great video!👍
+Michael Huenergardt Thanks
Fun fact the m in these model names mean mark model the model of gas mask or gun or item was so M just is a short term for mark
you can just take out the filters out of the pbf-
